the best cold treats the Northland has to offer — ice cream, milkshakes, shaved ice, fruit cocktails. You name it, we tried it, and enjoyed ourselves a bit too much in the process. If you’re looking for something with a bit of an edge after a long, hot summer day, we asked the owner of Tiki Huna to transport us somewhere else with a tiki drink, and his philosopher’s grog did not disappoint. Feeling a little stir crazy after a year inside? Julia O’Donnell brought us a guide to the trails in the Northland with the help of Ashley Elwell and her husband Adam. Whether you’re walking, biking, or chasing a toddler, there’s something for everyone on her list. And once you’re done hitting the trails, Anna Petrow and Patrick Mulvihill gave us the inside scoop on Green Dirt farm and their award-winning cheese up in Weston — one of Kansas City’s best day trip locations.

SECRET ESCAPES ON THE TRAIL BEHIND THE TREE-LINED HIGHWAYS

Northland Lifestyle | July 2021

We went on to discuss one of my favorite things about the area: KC seems to have something for everyone. For me, that’s walking trails, art styles, and food. For Adam, it’s the different types of biking trails. For example, Hodge Park is the perfect place for moms to have a relaxing walk while kids ride their bikes is an easy trail — winding I DROVE THROUGH THE NORTHLAND FOR THE FIRST TIME

lies to enjoy a peaceful time in nature. In a world that seems to be moving a mile a minute, that is exactly what we all need to enjoy each other and the stillness. trails for another reason. “Northland roads are not safe for bikers,” she says. She shared that we no longer teach youth how to communicate with drivers when they are biking on the road to signal left or right turn, but also drivers do not have the patience they should for bikers on the road, and they will not always wait or respect the space. That makes the work that Adam Elwell and the other volunteers do at Urban Trail Co. essential to providing a safe place for bikers, and those of us who prefer to walk benefit

from their work as well. Adam shared with me that volunteers at Urban Trail Co. use their own free time to cut back weeds, and trim back other vegetation that is encroaching on the trails, “Sometimes there will be a log and maneuvering around that on a bike is not always fun.” Other times though, they will determine where to keep logs and other obstacles to provide a more challenging ride.

throughout the summer they have outdoor movies on Friday nights, which would be a great finale for a ride. Another perk of this trail is it feels completely removed from the city, so a trip here feels like you have taken a real vacation. LOCAL FAVORITE: SMITHVILLE LAKE Another popular riding location is Smithville Lake. Ever the favorite for water bugs like me, you can see the lake from much of the trail, and the terrain varies because of the water feature. Alltrails.com (a great resource for trails near and far) had the trail at 7.3 miles, but Adam noted that there is really more like 13 or 14 miles of trail with all of the trails together. Some members of Urban Trail Co. have done so much for that area that they were around when the trail was first being built, and it is so special that it has grown so much. PERSONAL FAVORITE: PARKVILLE NATURE SANCTUARY A personal favorite of mine is Parkville Nature Sanctuary. The stunning view of the river, with the historical downtown at the trailhead and a playground for the littles, creates the perfect spot for a family day out. The trail is gentle enough that I once met a wonderful elderly couple using a special low-to-the-ground bike designed to help them continue riding. Afterward, I enjoyed one of the quiet places to relax along the trail. Parkville Nature Sanctuary is the place to be if you are close to the city and needing some peace. BEST FOR FAMILIES: HODGE PARK About a week before Hodge Park’s playground went up, I was comparing Johnson County to Liberty, disappointed that we did not have parks like they did. One week later, Liberty families were given (through some very hard work of locals) a brand new, beautiful, huge playground, which is now the place to be in Liberty. The rope climbing tower is a great challenge for kids, while the zipline and toddler playground are unique entertaining additions. This playground makes the trail here the best destination for families. It is a perfect outing to take the kids to walk or bike the trail, while the grown-ups quietly walk or talk behind them, getting their own rest time while the kids get energy out. Then, grown-ups can rest while the littles completely wear themselves out with new friends at the playground.

HONORABLE MENTION: PRECIOUS BLOOD RENEWAL CENTER Almost completely a secret, Precious Blood Renewal Center, which is used for retreats, has a quiet pond and short trail hidden behind it. Secluded at the end of the trail is a labyrinth, a historically influenced circle-shaped pathway similar to a maze pattern but on the ground, made to help people to meditate, pray, or practice mindfulness. If you are tired and don’t want to go far, but still need a relaxing escape, this is the place for you. (Just don’t all come at once, this is like my home away from home!) These are just a few of the trails hiding in the lush forests of the Northland, but there are many more. Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) has a fantastic map with all of the Kansas City trails on it. Go explore, share with us what your favorite places are and what you love about them.

You can also keep it simple by just grabbing a fruit cocktail, or you can spice it up by topping it with chamoy.

Whatever you find at La Dulzura, owner Diana just wants to share the flavors she grew up with her community. “Everyone is welcome so they can enjoy authentic Mexican dishes,” she says. SNOBUH 1599 Iron Street, North Kansas City Addi Son, who is also the owner of Ice Cream Bae, opened Snobuh at the end of 2019. Snobuh is one of the unique vendors in the Iron District, which is a garden party of shipping containers tucked away in an industrial neighborhood in North Kansas City. Snobuh is known for its unique, rotating flavors and the most aesthetically pleasing ice cream cone out there. Many of Snobuh’s soft-serve flavors are made with a southeast Asian flair, like ube, which is their bright purple ice cream made from sweet purple yams. Addi and his employees are always experimenting with flavors in the small space, seeing how customers respond — even the waffle cone flavors rotate in this shop. Soft serve is not the only frozen treat Snobuh does well. The shop also has a wide variety of smoothie options, including strawberry-mango, mango, peach-lychee and more. This summer they collaborated with Chamoy Boi to introduce a new smoothie specialty, made with a mixture of Tajin, chamoy, mango and homemade candies that are tossed in a special marinade. The shop is only open when the weather is warm, so make sure to go and try as many of their delicious flavors as you can! YOGURTINI 8375 N Booth Avenue, Kansas City With an array of frozen yogurt flavors and 75 topping options, Yogurtini is sure to light up the face of any kid or adult who is craving something sweet. Owner Isaac Collins loves having a Yogurtini in the Northland – he describes the community as one big family! While kids excitedly decide which toppings to put on top of their froyo mountain, adults who are trying to eat better can also enjoy a frozen treat from this shop. Yogurtini offers a variety of dairy-free, nonfat and no added sugar frozen yogurts. The Shoal Creek Yogurtini is not only here to provide the family with a frozen dessert — Isaac also makes a point to give back to the Northland. Isaac makes sure his business Steven Josiah Graves enjoys a “Captain America” shaved ice from Lilo’s Shaved Ice. If you haven’t had one with a snow cap or ice cream stuffed inside, change that immediately.

invests in the community, from fundraisers to catering to donations and sponsorships. Yogurtini also partners with local schools and nonprofits to make the Northland the best it can be.

cow and sheep milk cheese similar to Gouda or Gruyere cheese, pronounced “Ozark”) with smoked ham, pickled red onions, dill pickles and spicy mustard aioli on sourdough bread. For kids (or the kid at heart), their “Woolly One” is a grilled cheese made with their Woolly Rind (a Camembert-style blend of sheep’s milk and cow’s milk cheese) and Aux Arcs cheeses. And of course, if you’re feeling indecisive, you can always try them all on a cheese or charcuterie board. While some of GDF’s cheeses can best be described as adventurous or even funky, their commitment to their craft and expanding range of products, including blended milk cheese, truly offer something for the whole family. In fact, you’ve likely seen their products in your favorite grocery store – GDF’s fresh, sheep’s milk cheese is a delicate curd that can be spread onto your favorite sandwich or crumbled on top of your favorite pasta, pizzas and salads. For the more serious foodies, the GDF Farm Table Dinners should be at the top of your bucket list. This ongoing chef’s dinner series featuring some of the region’s most celebrated culinary talents, offering guests with Kansas City’s most unique, delicious and creative culinary destination. Ultimately, Sarah Hoffman and the GDF team aren’t doing anything particularly innovative. Humans collectively have the rich history and tradition of shepherding and cheesemaking, having raised sheep for their milk for millennia. But Green Dirt Farm has brought the art of cheesemaking to our own backyard, and they have the hardware to prove that their products are delicious. And while it’s easy to take the experts’ word for it, it might just be worth your while to make the quick drive up to Weston to try it for yourself.

TRENT KESTERSON, OWNER OF TIKI HUNA BAR, SAYS THAT THOUGH THE TIKI AESTHETIC IS A VERY SPECIFIC VIBE, PEOPLE WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE STYLE USUALLY HAVE THEIR OWN FLAIR. His? Tiki meets pop culture. His small tiki bar is located in the Iron District, the outdoor dining space in North Kansas City made from shipping containers. It’s saturated in all things tiki, but with his twist — a photo of Yoda in a Hawaiian shirt, Dr. Who tchotchkes, and Neverending Story Easter eggs. If you like tiki and nerd culture, you’ll love spotting all the fun decor on the bar shelves. Trent’s wife loves Harry Potter and said that when he first made this drink, it reminded him of the bright ruby color of the sorcerer’s stone from the first book/movie (known as the philosopher’s stone in the original British version). Dubbed the “philosopher’s grog,” it was a favorite at his bar last year, but he’s since revamped the menu for this summer. If you loved it then, now you can try your hand at it at home — a drink that will transport you to the halls of Hogwarts or a Polynesian beach, depending on what you’re in the mood for that day.
