YOU ARE SAVING THE WORLD. That's how I like to think of living mindfully and lowering my impact on the planet. Adding a little heroism to a concept like recycling can make taking out the trash a bit more fun. But no matter how you think about it, small changes can add up to significant impacts when it comes to conservation. And when you look at who you're saving the world for (I'm looking at you, Iris and Indra!), it's worth it. For our annual eco issue, we've found some people that are making differences in their own ways. Take artist Alexis Webb Bechtold. Her art is multifaceted, but the visual component of her Curiosity Passport project is created with found materials and upcycled items, for a beautiful result. Likewise, the ReSale Shop repurposes your donations and transforms them into life-changing philanthropic work. Each little bit counts. Hello Neighbors SPRING IS A TIME OF NEW BEGINNINGS AND I’M TAKING THAT VERY LITERALLY THIS YEAR! I’m Jeron, the new Publisher of Northland Lifestyle Magazine. I grew up in St. Joseph and attended Missouri Western State for college. In the early 2000s, I moved ‘south’ to the Northland and have loved it ever since! I spent seven years as a cheerleader for the Kansas City Chiefs and still love to dance and choreograph. I work with local high schools, dance studios, and even at my old stomping grounds at Arrowhead. So many of my big life moments have happened here--I met my husband, Zach, here, and we got married in 2014. We have a three-year-old son, Coy, who is so excited to be a big brother this year! I love being Coy’s mom and I’m looking forward to the fun and craziness that comes with two kiddos. So why make the leap to Northland Lifestyle now? Because I’m passionate about people and community, as my father was before me. He passed away in 2017 and it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced. My father valued and acted out compassion, hard work, and generosity for others. I see the opportunity to spread the good news about the people of the Northland through the pages of this magazine and want to partner with you, our readers, to do that. Teaching my son to spread goodness, just like his Papa did, is the most fitting way to honor my father. Rachel and I are committed to seeing stories from around the corner as much as from around the city in Northland Lifestyle. I’m so excited to grow in an area of the city that is bursting with potential. The next few years promise to be exciting and I hope that Northland Lifestyle can be the mouthpiece of our growth. F ONE WANTS TO PROCURE A BOTTLE OF SPIRITS FOR CONSUMPTION AT HOME, ONE NEEDN’T LOOK TOO FAR TO FIND A LIQUOR STORE, GROCERY STORE OR GAS STATION. But for someone looking for exactly the right spirit for a particular cocktail, it can be a bit of a challenge, especially if your tastes run to the bitter or smoky flavors of Amari or mezcal. That’s
how the Northland became home to Mitch e Amaro, a home bartending wonderland. The shop is the brainchild of brothers Ben and Josh Edwards. After receiving the Death and Co. cocktail book, they started searching for some of the harder to find ingredients. What they found was that for the home bartender, certain things were just impossible to find. Seeing an unfilled need prompted the brothers to launch their own shop dedicated to the more obscure things in cocktailing culture. It would be easy to write Mitch e Amaro off as just another liquor store, but that’s not the case. The shop stocks an array of bartending tools (jiggers, bar spoons, strainers, etc.), a large selection of cocktail books, and even non-alcoholic beverages such as artisan tonics and non-alcoholic spirits. And bitters? They have a huge variety to spice up any cocktail. The centerpiece of the concept though is the bar. Hiding behind rows of implements and hard to find Amari, whiskeys, gins, liquors, and mezcals, is a small bar with a large menu of drinks made using the ingredients in the store. The bar serves as a laboratory of sorts, a way to try out unknown spirits before taking the plunge. The menu isn’t full of the most creative cocktails in town, but it is the greatest variety of a single type. Take, for instance, the humble gin and tonic. You can try one of 13 variations, utilizing different combinations of gins, tonics, and garnishes. “To us, it seemed logical. If you want to try new spirits, you have a bar to try things. We were pleased to find out we could have a bar combined with the retail space. That way, if there was something you were interested in buying you could try in a cocktail first. Or if you find a cocktail that you like, you can take the ingredients home,” says Ben. The best part? If you buy a cocktail and a bottle or book you receive a discount. Discounts are also available for those that work in the service industry. And if they don’t have the bottle you’re looking for, they are happy to special order things that they don’t currently carry, even if it’s a single bottle.

The Edwards’ are excited about opportunities to educate. In addition to frequent tastings, they plan to start offering cocktail classes in the near future. Since opening in early February, the Edwards say that the reception in downtown North Kansas City has been very warm. They happened into the space when the Northland favorite LeMonde closed in September. “I was at Colony getting coffee and was going to get a cookie and they were putting up the signs saying they were closing. Maybe it’s a box for you, one filled with odds and ends that you just can’t find a good use for and Marie Kondo says they have to go. Have you ever wondered what happened to those things after they hit ‘the pile’? We asked the Assistance League of Kansas City to show the timeline of a donation to their ReSale Shop, located at 6601 N. Oak Trafficway in Gladstone. Donations to the ReSale Shop are processed and merchandised onto the selling floor. Their inventory changes at least once every 90 days, so there’s always something new to find. Proceeds from the shop benefit any one of the ten programs that the Assistance League supports including Operation School Bell, Operation Hug, Best Foot Forward, Senior Outreach Services, and the Assault Survivor Kit, among others. Once a donation is dropped off at the ReSale Shop, a buzzer rings and a small army of volun-

Once an item has caught the shopper's eye, it makes its way to the cash register, once again, run by a volunteer. The ReSale Shop and the Assistance League is entirely staffed by volunteers.

WE ARE TOLD TO DO IT WHILE WE ARE YOUNG. It makes us richer and endows us with opportunity. Those who didn’t get enough of it might feel remorse in their twilight years. I am not referring to saving money - though saving money certainly helps with the subject at hand.
I am referring to travel. Travel has a unique way of inspiring awe and curiosity regardless of age; it reminds us where our roots lie and challenges us to broaden our perspectives. Travel demands that we have flexibility because trust me, things will not go as planned. Learning to bend with unexpected challenges is not a skill isolated to travel; it extends to even our daily interactions. Growing up in a military family meant half of my belongings were always taped up in cardboard boxes. By the time I was five years old, I had wet my feet in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. By the time I was seven, I had already called four states ‘home’. It would be another two years before I came to recognize how different my experiences had been from my peers. This early encounter with travel shaped my view of the world and still influences my values today. As Americans, it can be difficult for us to wrap our minds around structures and cities that are older than 300 years. Standing at the impressive foot of the Prague Castle for the first time shifted a quiet sort of ignorance I’d had about the passing of time. Walking along cobblestone roads in historic Rothenburg filled me with an appreciation for human ingenuity and perseverance. My brain sort of glitched when I learned about a particular well that had been dug before 1100 AD. The world had been around long before me and would continue to go on long after I was gone.

ALEXIS WEBB BECHTOLD HAS THE SORT OF EBULLIENT PERSONALITY THAT INVITES SOMEONE TO TALK TO HER. It’s fitting then that her art installation at the Paper Birch Landing Gallery is essentially a visual guidebook to 24 public art pieces around the Kansas City metro area. The
project,
Passport,
has
called two

parts--the
static
installation at the gallery, and letterboxes planted at each work of art around the city. Participants can look at the clues in each letterbox at the gallery, as well as the website, CuriosityPassport.com, to find their way to the art installation. Once there, they can stamp their handmade Curiosity Passport with the stamp inside and record their names in the logbook. Webb Bechtold created the 24 hint boxes using found materials such as old cigar boxes, often sourced from the nonprofit Scraps KC. The vignettes are created out of used plastic gift cards as well as found objects and photographs, to create a truly mixed media representation of the art. “I am naturally more inclined to get out and explore than sit around and become bored. Sometimes we need a little motivation or a checklist to help us get out of the day-today rut. On the personal side, the Curiosity Passport challenged me to combine my seemingly random skills - photographer, tour guide, videographer, adventurer, letterboxer, stamp carver, etc. It has been exciting to bring it to life and see people exploring our wonderful Metro!” says Webb Bechtold.
