FEBRUARY—IT MAY BE THE SHORTEST MONTH BUT IN THE MIDST OF THE DOLDRUMS OF WINTER, IT CAN ALSO BE THE MONTH THAT PUSHES YOU TO BE THE MOST CREATIVE! While I'm enjoying having a 'real' winter again, I have to admit that cabin fever has set in a bit. Luckily, I have a curious toddler that will use anything and everything to be creative, including snow, crayons, or my lipstick! For this issue, we focused on the people adding value to our community in creative ways. Our feature story highlights three groups that can all be considered 'makers,' even if their methods vary wildly. In our second feature, the artistry of the Lyric Opera shines as well. Looking for art you can eat? Make a batch of Queen Sweets and Bakery's saffron rice. It's beautiful and tasty! PARK UNIVERSITY NAMES E-SPORTS COACH Park University, which became the first college/university in the Kansas City area to announce that it would offer a varsity esports program starting with the Spring 2019 semester, has appointed Ashley Jones as its first esports coach. Jones began her duties at Park on Jan. 7. Jones will oversee Park’s sevenmember esports team, which includes three

female

student-athletes,

who

will compete in League of Legends via the National Association of Collegiate Esports. The University is in the process of completing construction of its Parkade, a state-of-the-art gaming area located in the Mabee Learning Center/ Academic Underground of the Parkville Campus. Parkade will serve as the home for Park’s esports program for matches and practices, as well as provide a central location for students to watch and participate in gaming-related activities.

LOCAL BUSINESS DONATES MORE THAN $1.25 MILLION TO CHARITY Northland business KCI Auto Auction has donated more than $1.25 million to local charities over the past six years including recent donations of more than $183,000 to charities that serve local children and families. For the past several years, KCI Auto Auction has been the single largest and most significant business supporter for three of the charities: Jackson County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), whose volunteers advocate for abused and neglected children who are under court protection; Camp Quality, a summer camping experience and year-round support program for children with cancer; and Sheffield Place, a treatment and supportive housing program for homeless mothers and their children. More than just a simple carb, Kholoud's family recipe packs layers of flavor into each grain. Mashawi is the term for grilled meats, in this case, chicken, beef and a ground mixture of beef and lamb. Enjoy them atop Kholoud's Saffron Rice. SAFFRON RICE + 1 cup of basmati rice + 1 cup of chicken stock + 1 cup of water + 1 teaspoon saffron + .25 Teaspoon black peppers + 1/8 cup minced onions + 1 teaspoon mixed pepper corn + 1/8 cup whole coriander seeds + .5 cup ghee butter + 1 tablespoon salt Boil water in a large pot. Add all spices with the ghee butter and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Add rice and let it cook on high heat till the water and stock level match to tip of the rice. Lower heat to low and cover the pot with foil for another 15 minutes. Take the cover off, turn the heat off and stir the rice. Lastly put a lid back on so the rice can rest for another 5 minutes. Serve.

IT’S AMAZING HOW SOMETHING AS SEEMINGLY SIMPLY AS A BOWL OF SOUP CAN MAKE THE SOUL FEEL SO GOOD. When partnered with a great cause, it becomes a delightful embrace of the senses. On Sunday, February 24, the Junior Board of Synergy Services will present the 6th Annual Art Soup event at The Blitt Family Creative Arts Center on the Synergy Youth Campus at 2001 NE Parvin Road in Kansas City, Missouri. Patrons will enjoy a delightful array of soups made by a variety of local restaurants, along with cocktails, an opportunity to mingle, and a chance to feed their souls. This is the signature fundraising event established to benefit the art and music programs at Synergy Services Youth Resiliency Center (YRC). 18

“The Junior Board is a group of young professionals who support Synergy Services through fundraising and volunteering,” says Anne Vigliaturo, Special Events Manager for Synergy. “They put on this event with several restaurants, primarily out of the Northland area. We hope to have 10 restaurants participate this year. Guests will have the opportunity to pick a favorite soup and we will award a Golden Ladle to the winning restaurant.” Vigliaturo anticipates a large gathering this year, as last year’s celebration hosted 120 guests and raised $10,000 for the YRC. More than just serving up delicious bowls of soup, however, this event serves heaping helpings of fun, confidence and self-esteem to those who need and deserve it most. “Our purpose is to provide a safe space for all youth, as well as build community and teach skills,” emphasizes Katie Brewer, Synergy Services’ Art Therapist, Youth and Family Therapist, and President of the Kansas Art Therapy Association. “We have a large art studio in which youth can freely use the materials such as paint, drawing supplies, collage materials, and journals. We also offer groups to teach youth how to use more complicated material while also promoting healthy emotional management, improved self-esteem and developing a healthy identity.” Each guest at the event will receive a souvenir soup bowl created by the youth at the center. Each bowl represents a collaborative effort, as many hands go into the crafting of the bowls. One youth may build the bowl while others may glaze and fire. This is one way to promote a sense of community while working together to creating something beautiful. Even though patrons will enjoy a fun-filled occasion, it is the youth who will truly benefit from this event. “We use the funds from Art Soup to buy materials, so the youth have a variety of media to work with,” explains Brewer. “We often take suggestions from the youth about what art they want to create and try to accommodate by supplying the materials and bringing in different community members to teach these skills.” The days leading up to the event are heightened with enthusiasm and excitement. “Art Soup is a fun time in the Youth Resiliency Center,” says Brewer. “Youth that would typically be intimidated by trying something new (such as using clay) feel more comfortable because everyone is learning together.” Art is a comfortable avenue through which the youth can confidently and proudly express themselves. It offers others a visual dialogue, telling a story that defies words and as a result becomes a vehicle for self-empowerment for the youth. “Art allows me to share my feelings when I don’t want to say them out loud or I am too scared to,” indicates one YRC Art participant. presenting La bohème at the Rockhill Theatre, a former movie theatre, where the company performed for 10 years until a fire destroyed it. After a few seasons at the Uptown Theatre, the Lyric Opera moved into the Capri Theatre. “Eventually, we purchased this space and named it the Lyric Theatre, where we performed until 2011,” she says. “When the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts opened, we moved our performances there. During this time, we also opened our own facility, the Richard J. Stern Center, which houses our administrative offices, rehearsal space, scene shop and costume shop.” Davis-Singh turns the artistic vision of CEO and General Director Deborah Sandler into reality by bringing each artistic

the director, conductor, singers, and orchestra, there is an entire village backstage making it all happen. During the build phase, the carpenters and scenic artists work on the scenery while the cutters, drapers and stitchers work on the costumes. The prop master hunts props and furniture as directed by the scenic designer while the assistant lighting designer rents light fixtures. The technical director works with the set and lighting designers to make sure everything fits and works in the space. All of this planning takes place before moving to the Kauffman stage because time is limited there. Once onstage, there can easily be 20 stage crew moving the sets and lights around, 15 wardrobe crew helping the artists with their costumes, props crew, painters for final touch-ups and a team of stage managers to dot the i’s and cross the t’s.” Davis-Singh says that the Lyric Opera is fortunate to have so many talented artists in Kansas City: “One of the benefits of building scenery and costumes is that CONTINUED >

piece together. “It’s an extraordinary puzzle to put together when you are producing opera, and one that can easily take up to two years from conception to opening. There are multiple steps in the design process before a single piece of scenery or a costume gets built, starting with preliminary designs in black and white images and eventually in color. After that, overall color palette and textures are determined, and the costumes and scenery are built by specialized artisans. Then, everything is put together when rehearsals begin at our production center. Many of our principal singers come from outside Kansas City, but our chorus is cast with local singers. We rehearse for two to three weeks, move onstage to rehearse with the scenery and costumes, and add the Kansas City Symphony as our orchestra.” The audience doesn’t see what’s hiding behind the curtain—the production team needed to bring a performance to life. “Beyond February 2019 | Northland Lifestyle

these get rented to other companies and becomes a source of income for the Lyric. I also find it exciting that our work is traveling all over the United States representing Kansas City in such spectacular fashion.” It takes several people to research and create each and every costume. “Creating costumes is definitely a team effort with the costume designer taking charge. There may be historical research to be done, but if the historical period predates photographs, we study the art of the period. Costume designs may be determined by the subject matter of the opera, or the director may come up with a specific concept. Once a style and direction is chosen, the designer will go through the process of sketches, researching fabrics and reviewing budgets. As part of choosing fabrics, many times a costume designer will consult with a lighting designer to avoid costumes turning an unanticipated shade of the intended color once the stage lights are turned on. The costume designer will work with cutters and drapers in a costume shop to develop the patterns. Once the costume is created, there’s a fitting with the performer, and final touches will take place during dress rehearsals onstage.” Upcoming productions include Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers and the Exploration Series production of Penelope by Sarah Kirkland Snider. “While most operas are in a foreign language, all of our performances have subtitles so you can understand the story. Since we tend to plan our productions one to two years in advance, we are always looking to the future. Our 2019 and 2020 season will be a great mix of traditional operas that will capture hearts and minds. There will be something for everyone!” For more information, visit kcopera.org. 28

Now, the owner of Quilting is my Therapy, a fabric, quilting, and notions shop on the Liberty Square, is well known for her free motion machine quilting. She not only quilts, she also teaches classes, writes books, lectures and designs fabric. We caught up with her to see what she's working on right now! WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? I am inspired by layering different fabrics and colors. While I am normally drawn to blues and grays, I am trying to break out of my comfort zone and use some brighter, more vibrant colors. I've also been playing around with using two colors of thread when quilting. Depending on how the thread twists in the machine, you see a different color, giving the designs a bit of unpredictability. 42
