I also have to take a moment to share another favorite in September--my daughter, Iris. She will be two years old on September 24 the and is about to welcome a baby sister in November, whether she likes it or not! I'm savoring the last few months of just the three of us--singing Moana, having tickle fights, and watching her learn another 15 words a day, it seems. She's such a sweet soul, albeit one with a mischievous streak, and I can't imagine life without her. Happy birthday, Iris! You are so deeply loved. Set salmon to the side; add olive oil to the pan on a medium heat and add shrimp. Saute for 1 minute and add garlic, lemon juice wine. Reduce for less than a minute then add butter and parsley.

1 tsp minced garlic

1/2 cup of chopped

DIRECTIONS Add olive oil to a medium hot pan then add your pre-cooked potatoes. onions, Brussel sprouts, garlic, sugar, basil, salt, pepper, and butter. Stir the vegetables. Finish in the oven for about 2 minutes. Pull out from oven and add grape tomatoes. Serve warm drizzled with balsamic reduction.

STYLING TIPS + Be creative with plating. Most chefs prefer white plates to show off the colors and textures of the food. There used to be rules about where the protein and starch should go but that’s all gone now. Chef does recommend keeping all your proteins together. + Place your starch (roasted vegetables) on the plate in a circle or a line. Drizzle with balsamic reduction off of the back of a spoon or using a squeeze bottle. Pro tip: cover at least some of the opening of the bottle with a finger to close it off. The more pressure you exert, the more precise you can be with placement. + Place your protein (the salmon) adjacent to the starch. On our plate, two lines create a pleasing image, especially in contrast to the round plate. + Place shrimp on top of salmon. Chef recommends not spreading out the protein too much to avoid an amateur feel to the plate. + Ladle a good amount of the lemon and wine sauce over the shrimp and the salmon. This helps to marry the two protein flavors together even more. + Finish with some fresh greenery. Chef uses edible flowers but says that parsley or another light herb could work as well.

SOCCER (OR FOOTBALL EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD) IS KNOWN AS 'THE BEAUTIFUL GAME'. The finesse, the speed, the agility necessary to move the ball continuously for 90 minutes creates a ballet of athletic ability. No one knows this better than the members of Sporting KC, Kansas City's MLS team. Two of these players, defenders Matt Besler and Seth Sinovic, joined forces with friends and fellow soccer enthusiasts Daniel Kerley and Ryan Van Goethen to create a clothing line that combines the function of high-performance athletic wear with the laid-back casual vibe of the athleisure trend. The resulting clothing line is called STATES and is meant to reflect the growing American soccer identity. With their summer 2018 launch, they are debuting a line of shirts, shorts, pants, and hats that perform just as well on-pitch as they do off-pitch. We caught up with co-founder Ryan Van Goethen to find out the nitty gritty of their inaugural line. STATES IS THE AMERICAN ANSWER TO AN ATHLETIC STYLE THAT HAS BEEN POPULAR IN EUROPE FOR A WHILE. WHAT BRANDS INSPIRED YOU? Like any great business we spend a lot of time studying competing brands, but to be honest we are as much influenced by great brands (not just apparel ones) that have created a devoted and loyal following - those that stand for a mission bigger than selling product, but telling a story, giving its followers (in our case soccer players, fans, followers) a voice.

IDLE HANDS ARE THE DEVIL'S WORKSHOP, OR SO THE SAYING GOES. Perhaps that works in proverbs, but sometimes idle hands offer untold opportunities as well. Such was the case for Herbert Harris. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED MAKING CANES? I had back surgery on a herniated disk and I was just kind of stuck at the house. I come from a family of makers--I have family members that make crafts, do photography, and videography. I had this stick, a branch really, that reminded me of elephant ears. I started carving on it sitting on my deck, waiting for my wife to come home. My brother is a sculptor and artist out in L.A. and I showed it to him and he encouraged me to keep making them. So I kept going. I started one that I was carving flowers into and I took it in to work and was showing it around. One of the girls that I work with asked how much and I told her my brother had said not to accept anything less than $100. And she said, "I'll buy it!" She wanted it for her grandmother and she wanted it to have a religious theme. So I carved a nativity scene and Jesus walking and a cross. . . I made them so they all tied together. She ordered another one for her uncle, a walking stick with a peacock theme. And I haven't stopped making them since! WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS TO WORK WITH? I start with a blank basswood stick from Treeline USA. It's a white wood that takes carving well. I also collect stray limbs that I find along the way. I've also used blackthorn limb to make a shillelagh for a client that had Irish roots. It's a dark wood stick with a knob on the top. For him, I also inlaid the shillelagh with turquoise and brass with his name and a Celtic braid. When it comes to the tops, I'll use anything that I can find. I used a drawer pull for one that needed a lion's head. DO YOU HAVE ANY FORMAL TRAINING IN WOODWORKING? I do a lot of experimenting. If I have anything that I don't know how to do, I've learned it on YouTube. I do come from an artsy family. We've always made things. My great great uncle was Joseph Yocum. His artwork is in the Smithsonian. I'm also a Quindaroan. My family goes back to the 1850s in the Quindaro settlement. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU DEVOTE TO YOUR ART? I spend most weekends in the shop and generally spend a few hours each night on them too. It's work but it's relaxing too.
