HAPPY JUNE, EVERYONE! Summer is here and with it the carefree days that we look forward to all year. It's time to kick back, have a beer, and enjoy that porch swing or hammock that is too often neglected. And don't forget, Father's Day is June 17th! Speaking of fathers, our men's issue celebrates quite a few outstanding Northland dads. Whether it's Parkville resident Marco Rabello or new granddad Kevin Trimble, there are definitely men out there that are showing us how fatherhood should be done. They are involved, loving, and thrilled to be a part of their kids' lives, something that one sees all too seldom these days. I'm blessed to have a great father in my house, my husband, Aaron Leimkuehler. Our daughter, Iris, is rapidly becoming a daddy's girl and the best Menard's sidekick he could ask for. I'm so blessed to have a married a man that is wholly devoted to being involved in our child's life, from diaper duty to reading time to introducing her to the wonderful world of vintage Disney. And I'm excited to announce that he'll have even more opportunity to be a great

dad when our second daughter is born in the fall. Yes, it will be a long, hot summer for me but it will all be worth it when Iris gets to meet her little sister. Kids 4 Kindness Club makes homeless bags for teens On March 25, 55+ Northland kids organized teen homeless lunch-bags at the Staley Farms Clubhouse. Through family donations, kids (2-12yrs) assembled 850+ bags for Harvesters Give Lunch program. Kids4Kindness does quarterly kid-driven projects to raise community awareness and shape kindness early. What does a bowtied Brit know about the Northland? Plenty. Alisdair Philp is a resident of Weston with his wife and three dogs. Although he started his career in the music industry, he found his passion in medicine, achieving an honors degree and PhD in genetics in 6 years. Now, he sees himself as a communicator, bridging the world of real people and the maze of genetics. His day to day work involves helping patients understand genetic testing; how it affects them, their family, and how to decide if it's right for them. His main focus is on inherited cancer syndromes (breast, colon, ovarian cancers, etc.), which he sees as a timely subject in the age of 'precision medicine' with most diagnostic testing costing less than $250. So what does a geneticist do in his downtime? He dances, of course! Philp is active in the swing dancing scene, practices and teaches Tai Chi, and speaks Italian, French, and rudimentary Mandarin Chinese. Is diversity in his genes? Only he can find out. 20

JC Gregg Contestant on Season Three, ABC’s “The Great American Baking Show” When JC Gregg enters a room, there are two things you’ll instantly notice: the red-headed baker will be snappily dressed (most likely sporting a bowtie) and he’ll be the life of the party. Recognized for his beautiful and distinctive baked goods and super-sized personality, Gregg adds a liberal dash of tasteful fun wherever he goes. Last year was transformative for the Kansas City baker—he shed 150 pounds after receiving gastric bypass surgery and overhauling his lifestyle. What he lost in inches, Gregg gained in self-confidence. He not only elevated his style game a notch or two, Gregg’s passion for baking—which started 16 years ago following the heartbreak of losing his mother—blossomed. For Gregg, baking was a way to honor the most important woman in his life and flourished into a deep love for creating sweet treats and making others smile. Creativity is one of Gregg’s many culinary trademarks. He tweaks recipes, giving them his own spin and vision, and develops recipes based on intuition and research. His family and friends comprise an eager focus group, tasting new desserts and offering Gregg feedback. Gregg’s prolific baking benefits many Kansas City-area charitable causes, like raising funds to help three children orphaned after their parents were fatally shot during a home invasion or bringing awareness to childhood hunger through No Kid Hungry’s Annual Community Bake Sale. He wants to see his goodies do good which, in the end, is the perfect recipe for this bearded, bow-tied baker with a huge heart.

Kevin Trimble has always been a people person. With more than 30 years in the Northland under his belt, he's met his fair share of people, both as the longtime CEO of St. Luke's Hospital until 2015 and more recently as a top selling real estate agent in the Northland. Trimble focuses mainly on residential real estate but he's recently expanded into commercial and land sales as well. In his first year in real estate, he claimed the top title by having the highest volume of sales in a four state region. Not bad for a rookie! But his shift into real estate was just a natural outgrowth of his longtime community involvement. Trimble serves on the board of Tri-County Mental Health, as well as the Clay County EDC currently, and has been served on many more civic boards over the years. He resides in the Northland with his wife and raised two adult daughters here. His newest hobby is spending time with his four month old granddaughter. A FEW DAYS BEFORE OPENING DAY OF BASEBALL THIS SPRING, CHANNING DOSS WAS UP TO HIS ELBOWS IN BLUEBERRIES AND CHEESECAKE. Those are the flavors of the specialty Kansas City Royals blend of gourmet popcorn he creates at his shop, Popculture, in the Parkville Commons shopping center. In addition to simply cheering on our boys in blue, Doss was busy filling up 120 bags as a special treat from the executives at Aramark, the stadium’s food service vendor, to each of the Royals players and a number of front office staff.

“It was just one of those things where an executive at Aramark found us and liked what we are doing and all of a sudden, we’re a part of opening day,” says Doss, who was particularly excited that his favorite Royal, Alex Gordon, would be getting a taste of his company’s creation. A procurement professional in his past life, Doss switched his attention to popcorn last summer with the grand opening of Popculture. “We were looking for a business idea and my wife, Stephanie, came up with the popcorn idea,” Doss says. “There’s nothing like it north of the river and people seem excited about it.” In a town long dominated by Topsy’s, the Dosses believe that their family-owned business and popcorn popped fresh daily on site will appeal to locals. Popculture offers 68 flavors, including some you wouldn’t expect. Dill pickle, for example, is one of their top sellers. Otherwise birthday cake, s’mores and puppy chow are favorites with the Platte County crowd. In addition to the blueberry/cream cheese blend for the Royals, Doss has created a cinnamon and caramel blend for the Chiefs, and similar flavors for KU, MU, K-State and Nebraska. Hoping not to offend any ardent fans of either school, Doss would not say which university generates the most sales, but the blends have become a popular treat for wedding receptions. Park Hill South High School students, whose colors are purple and black, have their own blend of grape and cheesecake. Cherry and cheesecake blend to match Park Hill High School’s red and black team colors. The most common type of popcorn, the kind we pop in our microwaves and eat at the movie theater, is butterfly popcorn. It’s the best type for special seasonings, according to Doss. But if you want a candied popcorn, you’ll be eating a rounded popcorn known as mushroom popcorn. It’s typically a little more expensive, but holds up better in the machines used for candy coating. When Popculture opened, specialty candies and soft drinks were sold from the shelves that Doss made himself. Despite an intriguing selection, those items didn’t sell as well. This summer, Pop Culture has installed freezer cases and is offering 20 flavors of ice cream instead. The company will also be participating in First Fridays in the West Bottoms. Doss is consulting about popcorn with another entrepreneur in Beaumont, Texas. And by this time next year, there could be another Popculture located in Lincoln, Nebraska.
