The North Star Club, one of the many programs offered by Tri-County Mental Health Services does a little of both, offering an opportunity to get in touch with the

THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO ICELAND, I HAD TO FLY FROM KCI TO DENVER AND THEN CATCH ICELAND AIR TO REYKJAVIK. Not any more! With the announcement of IcelandAir’s new summer route out of KCI, we can all get there easier, cheaper and faster. Iceland is a series of volcanoes in various stages of activity. There are places where the ground literally bubbles and spews, somewhat like you might experience in Yellowstone National Park. As a result, geothermal spas can be found everywhere in Iceland. Every community has one or two and the traveling public is welcomed to join in this very Icelandic ritual. It’s a great way to get to know the locals. 14

Don’t fall into the tourist trap that is the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa. It’s the big one located between the airport and downtown Reykjavik. It’s expensive and filled with tourists. No self-respecting Icelander ever goes to the Blue Lagoon. Instead, take a good long soak at the Laugarvatn Fontana, about an hour north of Reykjavik. The facility has a number of saunas, pools, steam baths and the beautiful Lake Laugarvatn, as well as a number of services for children. This is an important note for us modest Midwesterners: You’re going to have to take a shower before you get in these pools and, although there are separate locker room for men and women, it’s a very public experience. In some saunas, a supervisor makes sure you are bathing properly. Just grin and bare it – literally. I promise you, it will be a highlight of your trip. A restaurant and drink station allows you to make a day of it at Laugarvatn Fontana. While there, you have to try one of the more delicious treats unique to Iceland – geysir bread. The people of this region actually bake their bread by burying a pot in the ground and letting the earth’s heat bake it. It comes out with a warm, CONTINUED >

molasses-like crust, that, with a slathering of fresh butter from genetically pure sheep, will easily erase the memories of having to shower naked in front of strangers. Trolls, elves and other mystical creatures? Yes, the majority of people in Iceland believe in these things. It’s very much a part of their culture. An Elf School in Reykjavik offers classes every Friday afternoon that explains it all. The best place to see elves and such in their natural habitat is in their mountain home of Dimmuborgir near Lake My'Vatn. Visit on the night of the summer solstice for the best chance of finding elves and trolls. Special festivities that night are meant to introduce visitors to this Icelandic folklore and lure the mystical people from their hidden homes. For Game of Thrones fans, the area around Lake My'Vatn is the land beyond the Wall. A number of Game of Thrones tours begin in Akureyri. Another magnificent spot visually, historically and culturally is the Þingvellir National Park (pronounced Thingvellir). This is where the country was founded in the year 930 A.D. and served as the governing seat for nearly 800 years. It is where Icelanders accepted Christianity and were baptized in the lake and where every significant national celebration has been held for a millennium. Þingvellir is equally fascinating from a geological perspective. The tectonic plates that are Europe/Asia and North America come together here. At one point on a hiking trail, you can jump between both continents. Scuba divers, plan a dive to the Silfra Fissure that allows you touch the two continents underwater. Spend a full day at Þingvellir to truly absorb the heart of this beautiful land.

activity for the program participants. With donated labor from the KCI Rotary Club, the new garden – complete with six raised beds and a compost area – was completed in March 2017 at the group’s main location at 3100 NE 83rd St. It’s created a positive ripple effect, says CEO Tom Petrizzo. “The gardening is kind of a symbol of producing something that literally bears fruit,” he says. “There’s a sense of community; of being part of the garden; I think there’s also a sense of ownership. It’s not a public garden; it’s their garden.” For a nonprofit that serves 8,200 people each year, Petrizzo says the therapeutic benefit from growing carrots, lettuce, peppers, okra and tomatoes has been a nice supplement to the other therapies provided by the health professionals on staff.

“It’s not just being connected to nature,” he says. “This is a nice complement to medication, to be engaged in an activity like gardening. It’s a natural health benefit.” About eight to 10 participants regularly tend the garden, and another 10 to 15 work it intermittently. For one participant who used to grow okra with his grandfather, Murphy says the chance to grow his own okra has made a large impact on his overall demeanor. “When he goes out to harvest it, he beams,” she says. “He’s smiling, and he likes to share it. You can tell that he has a sense of accomplishment.” Lori Byl serves as the director of the community psychiatric program and employment services, and says the joy goes way beyond the garden fence. “Their excitement is contagious to the staff,” she says. “It’s wonderful to watch and see.” For more information about Tri-County Mental Health's many programs, visit Tri-CountyMHS.org.

THREE GENERATIONS STRONG, THE BARHAM FAMILY OPERATES FARM WITH GREAT CARE.

THE ORIGINS OF THE 100-ACRE BARHAM FAMILY FARM IN KEARNEY TRACE TO THE 1800S, MORE THAN A CENTURY AGO WHEN INFAMOUS OUTLAW JESSE JAMES WAS BORN IN THE AREA. Three generations of Barhams currently run the farm, using sustainable practices to care for the land where cattle, chickens, and other animals are raised. “The farm was originally 300 acres,” Kenny Barham says. “When my wife Annette’s grandmother passed, her mother inherited 100 acres. We bought the land from her and built a house on the farm.” Kenny and Annette’s sons Dusty and Kody also farm land in Kearney and Lathrop. Barham Family Farm offers pasture-raised Angus beef, chicken, and other fowl as well as farm-fresh eggs. Nearby local farms raise the pork and lamb sold by Barham, using the same sustainable practices. Animals are naturally and sustainably raised without the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMO), chemicals, antibiotics, or growth hormones. Rather than use feedlots, the Barhams use pasture-based farming to improve conditions for the health of the animals and the land. Cattle feed on grass and also eat locally grown non-GMO corn to enhance marbling and flavor. Grazing animals are rotated to different pastures to prevent overgrazing of the land and to add natural organic material, such as manure, that fertilizes soil. The farm stockpiles grass for feeding cattle. When they resort to hay, the Barhams unroll the bales rather than place them whole in a hay ring, or feeder. The cattle scatter manure over a wider area as they feed and don’t damage the soil while gathered around a set location. Barham Family Farm receives day-old chicks from a supplier and brood them inside for two weeks. Shavings from the brooder are composted after brooding. “We then move them outside to our pasture pens, a portable shelter that protects them from predators,” Barham says. Chickens roost in a 12x12 shelter at night equipped with a covered tarp, feed, and water. They roam free on pasture by day to feed and scratch at grass and earth, providing a natural means to work organic material into the soil. Barham says, “We move the shelters twice a day, morning and night, so the chickens always have fresh grass.” Legumes planted on rotating pastures between grass seeding add nitrogen to the soil for nourishment. Soil erosion isn’t an issue the Kearney farm. As stewards of the land, the Barhams’ farming practices prevent overgrazing. Barham adds, “We don’t till the soil or grow row crops that would contribute to erosion.” Online orders can be placed for Barham Family Farm’s “pasture to porch” home delivery or local pickup. The farm delivers to customers throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Online orders placed by Tuesday are delivered on Thursday of that week. Customers may also pick up orders at the farm. By selling direct rather than through retailers, the farm minimizes waste from transportation, energy, and packaging that would impact the environment.

In April, the family will open Wildflower Dreamz General Store as a convenient one-stop location to buy farm products. “The general store will have our meat products, eggs, bread, baked goods, honey, milk, butter, candles, and soap made from our goats’ milk,” Barham says. Local chefs proudly feature Barham Family Farm’s meat and eggs on the menu at Tannin Wine Bar, The Antler Room, Justus Drugstore, Black Dirt, The Sundry, The Farmhouse, Brookside Poultry Company, and other restaurants (see sidebar). “Each time his name was mentioned at a restaurant, the running commentary became, ‘That Kenny Barham, he is a good man,’” said Leslie Newsam, co-owner of The Antler Room.
