appy Father's Day everyone! Our June issue is a love letter to men--the fathers, brothers, sons and neighbors that we can rely on, laugh with, and love. Look beyond the stereotypes--the meat, beer, sports, etc--and there are some amazing stories all over the Northland.

Andy Martinez can attest that family can mean everything. Andy is a Special Olympian and together with his parents, Kathy and Michael, he has found that autism can't slow down a man with a plan. Michael and Kathy have given all that they can to give Andy a leg up and in turn, he raced ahead and found success in sports when some told him he would never be able to play.

The interview comprises 50 percent of the score, swimsuit accounts for 25 percent and the remaining 25 percent is from the evening gown competition.

At the local level, contestants make appearances at community events, fairs, and festivals. Mrs. Parkville will be promoting her platform, animal rescue and KC Pet Project, by speaking to groups and volunteering at activities.

Baska and her husband John, along with their children Austin (26), Sydney (20) and Tyler (18), have made Parkville their home for the past 22 years. She is the CEO and Founder of Deborah Baska Fitness and nationally recognized as being one of the top health and fitness coaches in her industry. She has a Bachelors in Business Communication from Rockhurst University and spent the first 20 years of life after college as a corporate marketing executive.

In addition to her business of inspiring and lifting up other women, Baska volunteers at KC Pet Project and is actively involved in her church, St. Therese, as a lector.

oughly 20 miles wide and 20 miles long, the Northland is considered home to many residents. For Bob and Margie Langdon of Parkville, there is no other place they want to live.

“We consider the Northland the best well-kept secret. The housing is affordable, it’s central to everything with great schools. It’s family-friendly, and a place we want to raise our family. And after the kids are gone, we will still love it,” says Bob Langdon.

Langdon is one of the partners at Langdon and Emison Attorneys at Law. With offices in Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chicago as well as doing business and attending conventions all across the United States, close proximity to an airport is a must.

“When we lived in Lexington, it was easily an hour to the airport, which meant early mornings and late nights. Then with the change in the economy a few years ago, that meant fewer flights, which limited us even more. That was one big factor that drew us to the Northland: proximity to the airport. Now, he’s 10-12 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic lights,” Margie Langdon says.

In 2010, Bob was one of two Missouri attorneys to be named “Legal Champion” as part of Missouri Lawyers Weekly’s “Lawyer of the Year” program. When the Lexington office became too small, and a move was necessary, Bob searched for offices all over the Metro Kansas City area before settling in North Kansas City.

“We’ve doubled our size in the NKC location. It’s a great central location, with a parking lot where guests can pull right up to our doors instead of hunting for a parking space in a parking garage. The internet services that are available to businesses in NKC is the rival of Silicon Valley quality regarding speed and process power. I can hook into the hub in the Lexington office, or the phone can ring in both offices,” Bob says.

After a trip to Europe, the Langdons began changing their grocery store habits based on what they saw there, and the grocery stores in the Northland help this lifestyle.

“A friend in Germany said, ‘why would you eat a chocolate bar that is good for five years?’ That really changed our habits. We buy everything that day; everything is fresh which gives us a healthier lifestyle.” Bob says.

Margie grew up in the Northland, graduating from St. Pius, and the feeling of ‘coming home’ after living in Lexington was important to her. She now devotes her time to finding homes for others in the Kansas City area as a real estate agent with Reece and Nichols.

“For me, it was a real sense of community and neighborhood that drew me to the Northland. I wanted a place for my kids with sidewalks and pools, where they can play games outside and feel safe. The schools are fantastic--you can’t go wrong anywhere in the Northland for a school district. There are so many options for educating your children,” Margie says.

As a real estate agent, it’s important for Margie to be a part of the community where she sells. With an office in Burlington Creek, she’s right in the heart of it. Her office is in a place that helps her stay connected to the community, and where she can be a part of changes and be in the know.

“The old In-A-Tub was our hangout, the original one down on Oak Street. We used to park and just hang out. We still go about once a year to get our taco fix. And the roller rink over on Chouteau; it was the happening place on Friday night. We still go to the one in Riverside, but it doesn’t have the same feel as the Chouteau one did growing up,” Margie says.

The Northland offers a complete package for the Langdons both professionally and personally. It's good to have a place to call home.

O

n any given Tuesday evening at the pub adjacent to the Rothaus Brewery in Germany’s Black Forest Highlands, you’ll find a table of local cyclists toasting with their mugs of Tannenzäpfle, the brewery’s most popular beer. They’ve been making beer here for 225 years and the cyclists choose this spot to celebrate the end of their weekly 40-kilometer ride through the winding, hilly roadways of southwest Germany.

That Germans and all Europeans have an affinity with their bicycles like Americans love their automobiles is nothing new. But in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, that relationship is intertwined with local pride in that the very first bicycle was built here in 1817.

Leonardo da Vinci and a number of other visionaries played around with the design of a bicycle for hundreds of years, but no one actually did anything about it until Karl Drais came along.

After years of bad crops throughout Europe in the early 1800s, people were reduced to eating their horses simply to survive. A reliable means of transporting people and goods that didn’t need to be fed and cared for was Karl Drais’ goal.

It’s a bit of a stretch to call that first contraption a bicycle.

no pedals. You simply dropped your feet to the ground and pushed yourself along. That’s why the early bicycle was called a “laufmaschine” or running machine. Drais named it the “draisine” but others called it the Dandy Horse.

Put this date on your calendar: June 12, 1817. That’s when Drais took his invention out for its first ride, reportedly going from Mannheim to Rheinau, a distance of about five miles. The iron wheels were connected by a piece of wood about the size of a 2 X 4 with a small amount of padding where the rider sat.

Replicas of this running machine and other early bicycles are on permanent display at the Technoseum in Mannheim.

Guided tours are available in English, and that’s a good option because it’s probably the only way you’ll be offered the opportunity to ride a “laufmaschine” replica on an indoor corridor. During the bicentennial celebration this summer a much larger temporary exhibition will focus entirely on this, the first horseless means of transportation, and how it launched a desire for greater mobility for us all.

of years ago. Beautifully groomed trails along the Rhine and Neckar River contrast with the rugged challenges of riding through the Swabian Alps and along the shores of beautiful Lake Constance or Lake Titisee.

Castles, monasteries and other major attractions throughout the region can all be reached on two wheels. Of course, numerous breweries and wineries along the way provide wonderful opportunities to raise a glass with the locals. They call this system of trails and services dedicated to cyclists the “Radstreckennetz.”

For those who may wish to bike a few hours here or there, Stuttgart, Mannheim and nearly every community of any size throughout Baden-Württemberg has a bike rental program through NextBike with many locations adjacent to train stations in those communities. The cost is about 1€ per half hour.

You may reserve up to four bikes at a time on-line in advance of arrival or via the NextBike app.

But for longer, more complex exploration of the region on two wheels, visit Tourism-bw.com/Nature/Cycle-vacations. Here you’ll find links with detailed information on bicycle friendly accommodations, a bicycle route planner and the two separate long-distance routes along the Rhine River.

TWO OTHER ITEMS OF CONCERN:

1 - Germany does not require cyclists to wear helmets, but of course, it’s a good idea. Packing your most comfortable helmet from home won’t take a lot of space in your luggage.

2 – You don’t speak German? Not too worry – much. Most Germans, especially those who interact with travelers, speak some English and are more than willing to communicate the best they can. But even if not, you and your hosts will speak the common language of cycling, and that’s all you’ll need for a bicycle birthday adventure this summer.

A

ndy Martinez is fast. Very fast. He's fast on dry land and he's fast in the snow and he has the medals to prove it.

Although you may not have seen him at Sochi, he is still an olympian--a Special Olympian.

Andy, who is autistic, is 32 years old and competes year round

in a number of sports, from soccer to basketball to swimming to his favorite sport, snowshoe racing. He recently competed at the 2017 Special Olympic World Games in Austria, taking bronze in snowshoe racing. Andy has spent 20 years competing in Special Olympics and his parents consider the organization a vital part of their son's continued success.

Andy found snowshoe racing after discovering that he did not enjoy falling down while skiing. Snowshoeing requires a long gait and determination, both of which Andy possess.

"When you're in Special Olympics, no one can help you if you fall down; you must continue on your own. In his first race, he was in the lead but he fell down because his snowshoe came off and he had to put the snowshoe back on, regained the lead, made the turn, fell and picked himself up and regained the lead to win the race," his mother Kathy says. Determination is something that Andy has in spades.

Olympics so the training schedule is intense and ongoing but provides a sense of stability and routine for a man that is constantly on the hunt for the next medal. He regularly competes in the 200m, 400m, and the 4X400m relay.

Mike spent 28 years in the U.S. Army, moving his family 15 times over the course of his career, landing in Kansas City ten years ago.

The family chose Kansas City because of the exceptional services that Platte County offers to people with intellectual disabilities.

They help people like Andy find work, find community, and find care when they need it.

Snow flies as Andy races ahead.

When Andy isn't training (that is, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.) he works at Vocational Services, Inc. He spends his days lifting, organizing, and arranging materials on pallets in a warehouse setting, playing a sort of large scale Tetris for a variety of products.

Andy Martinez was six months old when his mother, Kathy, noticed that he was different.

"It was just little things. He didn't hit milestones on time. He was just delayed," she says.

It took many more years to get an official diagnosis of autism but Kathy did whatever she could to make sure that her son had activities that allowed him to shine. Running is just one of them.

Competitors often become friends through Special Olympics.

When Andy is not training, he's an avid baseball fan. He's a regular at The K and has become a favorite of the charity organizers for the Royals. Andy caddies for the Royals' charity golf tournament. He's such a favorite that the Royals invited him to come to Game Six of the 2014 World Series. He enjoyed the game from behind home plate in David Glass's personal seats.

Andy also cares about giving back to the community. One of his favorite ways to do that is through the Ronald McDonald House pop tab program. Andy collects pop tabs to donate and has a vast network of friends and family that contribute to his collection. Most recently, he donated two containers of 75 lbs and 50 lbs of pop tabs-that's more than some schools contribute as a whole.

Andy has never let his position on the autism spectrum slow him down or define him. Instead, he's used the tools that Special Olympics, places like VSI, and his devoted parents have given him and become the best version of himself that he can be. He has friends, a girlfriend and a love of Broadway musicals, as well as a rigorous but enjoyable training schedule. With this support, he's able to be himself--charming, shy but not stand-offish and excited about each new challenge that lies ahead.

If you’re talking about the difference dads make in the lives of

their daughters, Susan Dawes, author, teacher, speaker, and counselor, will be the first to provide a list of differences dads make. Especially hers.

“My father, Floyd Seibert, was very inspirational in my life by being committed to the dad and daughter relationship, as well as teaching me many life lessons,” Dawes recalls admiringly.

Growing up with two older brothers and a younger sister in Adel, Iowa, a small town that barely tops the 4000-population mark, Dawes’ father took every opportunity to spend time with his family. That effort did not go unnoticed.

“Dads teach daughters a lot from being involved in their lives,” says Dawes. “It is about taking time to know your child and her talents.

“I was very active in sports and other extracurricular activities. My two brothers ran track quite successfully; why wouldn’t I believe that I, too, could become a successful hurdler? The only thing between success and me turned out to be the hurdles.

True to her dad’s statement, Dawes says she’s found that life presents many races to run. “A few may take place on a track. The majority will be run off the track. Results will vary. In some you may be victorious. In some you’ll struggle. In others, you’ll never win, no matter how hard you try.”

In September of 1994, Floyd Seibert finished last in a long-fought race of endurance. An involuntary participant, he lost out to the persistence of cancer.

Long after her father’s death, Dawes lives by the advice he shared with her in seventh grade, “There will always be another race.”

Similarly, there will always be another day.

“When people ask me what I've learned in life. This is how I respond: “I've learned you must live one day at a time and look for the graces within it. It may be as simple as seeing a cardinal, getting a card from a friend, or witnessing the sweet smile of a child. Appreciate your mountaintop experiences because they won't last forever. If the bottom falls out of your world, put one foot in front of the other, breathe, and keep going. And most importantly, hold on to your faith, read your Bible and pray. God does hear and will give you the strength, courage, and hope to face whatever race you have to run.”

Floyd Henry Seibert’s legacy lives on through a book Dawes wrote, A Father’s Legacy of Life Lessons. Within its pages, his daughter recounts the story of how her loving father inspired her to run not only the long distances but also the real races of life. While Seibert, in his own opinion, may have lived an ordinary life, in the eyes of his daughter, he was an extraordinary father.

As a result of that book and to further honor her dad, Dawes also founded a 5K Run/Walk to promote the importance of Dad/Daughter relationships. The 4th Annual Dad & Daughter 5K will take place on June 10th in North Kansas City.

“We are excited this year to host the event at our new location in North Kansas City, the industrial area at 18th & Erie,” Dawes says.

“The community has already embraced it and been quite gracious. " “I started this 5K because of my passion for running, to honor my amazing father, and to draw attention to the importance of the dad and daughter relationship," explains Dawes. ”What I love most about this 5K is the legacy it is leaving for so many participants of all ages.

And, the proceeds go to a local charity that helps homeless families.”

W

hen Harley and Jackie Morlock moved to Smithville in 2006, one of their first stops was at Platte Valley Bank to open a new account. A clerk commented on Harley’s attractive ring, a gift from his wife in 1988.

One thing led to another and within minutes, Harley and Jackie were committed to a dinner meeting the coming Tuesday, thus continuing Harley’s 45 years of perfect attendance as a member of Lions Clubs International.

This month, more than 1.5 million Lions in 46,000 clubs around the world are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of this community service organization by a group of Chicago business leaders on June 7, 1917.

Lions Clubs contribute to any number of community projects, from sponsoring Boy Scout Troops to environmental initiatives to college scholarships for high school seniors. But it was at a national convention in 1925 in Cedar Point, OH that the guest speaker solidified the service project for which the Lions are most known today.

That’s why you’ll find a collection box for donations of old eye glasses at Nellie’s Sweet Shoppe, co-owned by Harley and Jackie Morlock, and their daughter Ronna, in downtown Smithville.

In 1972, the Morlocks were busy parents of five children living in Saint Louis Park, MN, a suburb of Minneapolis. Harley was a Boy Scout leader in a troop sponsored by the local Lions Club. Because he wasn’t busy enough with work and kids and church, he joined the Lions and hasn’t missed a twice monthly meeting in 45 years.

Back then, women were not allowed to join the Lions Club, so Jackie soon joined the local Lioness Club. In 1987 at the international convention in Taipei, Taiwan, male members voted to allow women in the organization. That meeting coincided with Harley being sworn in as District Governor.

A few years later, at an international gathering in Denver, Jackie was sworn in as District Governor as well. She hasn’t missed many meetings either.

“We’ve eaten at a lot of pancake breakfasts over the years,” laughs Harley. “Our kids learned to schedule their activities around the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.”

Their daughter, Janelle, was the reason the Morlocks moved to Smithville. Janelle lived here and worked at VML, an advertising agency based on the downtown airport, when she had a recurrence of an aggressive form of malignant melanoma. She passed away in January 2007.

Lions, and that he and his wife have given so much to the organization, is one reason Smithville president Jeff Becker calls him “Mr. Lion.”

Although it’s a small group, the Smithville Lions Club gets pretty busy this time of year. They sponsor the Smithville Farmers and Makers Market that fills the downtown square each Wednesday afternoon and evening. The club’s goal this year is to make enough money to buy a building and expand the market to a year-round service to the community.

The allure of white sands and azure waters along South Beach requires no explanation.

F

irst impressions are powerful. A few days and late nights in South Beach reveal there’s more to this sun-drenched paradise than meets the eye.

Heading from Miami International Airport to South Beach, the

route east along the Macarthur Causeway breaks away from the mainland and life’s burdens. Rolling ocean waves, sunshine, and white sand beaches beckon. South Beach, a neighborhood located on the lower end of the island and coastal resort city of Miami Beach, is a leisure-rich destination perfect for a guy’s weekend getaway.

First, drop gear and luggage at The Gates Hotel South Beach, a former Aloft Hotel equipped with a tempting pool and bar/lounge.

Other lodging options range from extravagant (1 Hotel, The W) to boutique (Impala, Vintro) to Art Deco (The Marlin, Hotel Chelsea).
