Who runs the world?
T
hat's a great question! According to Beyoncé, girls run the world, but I think that the case can be made for women in general. And in May, we are focusing on the women that are changing the world in a variety of ways. Check out our feature on the women that are leading their communities--Mayors Jean Moore, Nan Johnston, and Kathy Rose. Each of them came to public service in a very different way but all have left an indelible mark upon their community. And what's more, they are shining examples that a woman's place is wherever she can make the most impact. Take a peek inside Jane Bromberg's studio. She's parlayed a love of design into a career as a dressmaker, seamstress, and quilter. Her ability to work from home meant that she could raise her family on her own terms, while also contributing to the family finances. Now that the kids are grown, she's bloomed into an artist in her own right and is showing local lovers of the arts what a needle and thread can do. And finally, see how the first six months of motherhood has changed me in our Parting Thoughts. It's been a wonderful journey and I'm excited to continue it. As Mother's Day approaches, let's acknowledge and thank the women in our lives that pour out their love to all those around them. We would be nowhere without them!

DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AWARDS GLADSTONE GRANT The Missouri Department of Conservation has awarded the City of Gladstone a TRIM II grant to fund the trimming of historic oak trees in Oak Grove Park. Many of the old oaks had suffered storm damage over the years and needed extensive pruning to extend the life of the trees and to increase the safety of park users. This

A small class of students are responsible for brewing and serving the coffee as well as developing and creating marketing materials. The idea for the Oak Perk Coffee Shop was conceived by teachers McSparin and Mayabb to be a constructive outlet for students to build and practice useful life skills like responsibility, customer service, dedication, and (of course) how to brew a great cup of coffee. Oak Perk Coffee Shop menu is limited, for now. Students have already expanded the menu with an original recipe for a Mocha. They hope to expand the offerings to include cold and blended beverages as the coffee shop continues to grow.

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. This year’s theme – “Strength. Resilience. Justice.” – reflects a vision for the future in which all victims are strengthened by the response they receive, organizations are resilient in response to challenges, and communities are able to seek collective justice and healing. Executive Director Robin Winner received the award on behalf of Synergy Services. This is the 14th year for the award to be presented in memory of Crystal Kipper and Ali Kemp, two young women who were both fatal victims of tragic crimes. Roger Kemp, Ali Kemp’s father, and Anna Rea, Crystal Kipper’s mother, participated in today’s presentation. Synergy’s new Children’s Center in the Northland celebrated its grand opening last fall. Synergy now has more beds available to serve children from birth to 17 years old. Their hope is to no longer have to turn children away because of limited beds and resources. The Children’s Center is not a foster care agency, but an emergency placement shelter designed to provide stabilization to children in crisis (such as homelessness, domestic violence, incarceration, or unexpected hospitalization).
BARKAPALOOZA RAISES MONEY FOR EXCELSIOR SPRINGS DOG PARK On June 3rd, local dog lover Lani Odell will welcome animal lovers from around the Northland to come raise money to benefit a new dog park in Excelsior Springs. The event, which will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Lover's Lane Park, will feature a bark 'n walk as well as contests for cutest and ugliest dog and an adoptable dog showcase. Copper Creek Band will play from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.. Check out the photo booth, face painter, bounce house, and silent auction. There will even be an appearance from the Clay County K-9 unit and Paw Patrol! For more information, visit Facebook.com/barkapaloozaesmo.
WALK MS EXPECTED TO SURPASS $1 BILLION THIS YEAR Since 1988, hundreds of thousands of people have taken part in Walk MS events across the country raising critical funds and awareness for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This year, the cumulative fundraising is expected to surpass $1 billion. “Walk MS is a joyous gathering with a wonderful ‘we’re in this together’ feeling,” says Cyndi Zagieboylo, President and CEO of the National MS Society. “Every participant, volunteer, donor and sponsor is helping to drive us toward this exciting $1 billion milestone. Together, we are accelerating progress in making life-changing breakthroughs so that each person with MS can live her or his best life.” Hundreds of people are expected to raise more than $31,000 at Walk MS: Liberty on May 6. Walk MS is an opportunity for people living with MS and those who care about them to connect, join together, and be inspired. In 2016 alone, nearly 300,000 people at more than 550 locations across the country walked to create a world free of MS, raising nearly $50 million. Genentech, Novartis and Sanofi Genzyme are national sponsors of Walk MS. May 2017 | Northland Lifestyle

Other quilts are commissioned. Memory quilts are custom pieces created to honor someone that has died. The client brings clothing and fabric associated with the loved one. That fabric can be cut into pieces and arranged into a design that is assembled, quilted, and finished over several weeks. “Currently, I have a waiting list of two months,” says Bromberg of her backlogged projects. Bromberg consults with each client to understand the goal of the custom piece. They discuss the design and review the cost of the fabric and quilt work. This custom “hand work,” a craft that requires time and skill, is not inexpensive, but the final results produce a lifetime of reward. Throughout Bromberg’s home, quilts are displayed on beds, racks in her living room, and on walls as fabric-based art. “Whether it is decorative or utilitarian, I work with the same design principles,” says Bromberg. Decisions about color, shape, texture, composition, structure and levels of detail ranging from ornate to rustic factor into the process and final work. Bromberg’s limeand-purple quilt has been a work in progress for two years. She’s in no rush to complete the final panel simply to get it done. The artistic and technical details will emerge in time. Meanwhile, Bromberg has ample work from clients awaiting her attention. There’s not an idle moment to spare in a rocking chair. The longarm quilting machine is ready for Bromberg to bind together stitches, fabrics, and ideas into a quilt that will inspire stories for years to come. See more of Bromberg's work at

Local Mayors Took Different Paths to Arrive at the Same Destination ARTICLE PEGGY PAROLIN | PHOTOGRAPHY JOEL SCHNEIDER AND PROVIDED
E
ach night, approximately 35,000 people in the Northland go to bed with one thing in common. They all live in communities governed by mayors that are women.
Mayors Nan Johnston, Jean Moore, and Kathy Rose of Parkville, Gladstone, and Riverside,
MO, respectively, serve as leaders of their cities. Though they each traveled different paths to arrive at this same destination, ultimately, they are more alike than different.

HOOKED ON POLITICS (CON TI N U ED)
Jean Moore comes from a family with a long history of participation in government and politics. “My father was the 5th generation of serving as County Judge (County Commissioner) in my home county. From the time I was a little girl, I remember campaigning with my dad. So, it wasn’t totally untoward that I would be drawn to political/government involvement. While studying political science at the University of Missouri-Columbia, I had the opportunity to be a part of the first legislative internship class at Mizzou that paired political science students with legislators in the Missouri General Assembly. I was fortunate enough to have a front-row seat to the legislature, and the passage of important legislation still in effect today (i.e., the Missouri Sunshine Law). With opportunities to work on the campaign of US Congressman Jerry Litton, who was running for US Senate, and spending five years in the Kansas City district office of US Senator Tom Eagleton before taking a leave to help direct his successful re-election bid, I was ‘hooked’ on politics!” says Moore. After nearly a decade of public service, Moore took a break and joined a small market research consulting firm here in Kansas City. “In 1992, the founder decided to leave the company, so I hung up my shingle and took over the project management for the clients we had been serving. I’ve been in the market research consulting business on my own for the past 25 years.” A little over a decade later, Moore was approached by a current city councilman in Gladstone to participate in a grassroots citizens-based planning effort to establish a long-range strategic plan for the city. Intrigued by the possibilities, she ended up co-chairing that effort, called Gladstone on the Move, which resulted in the construction of the Gladstone Community Center and Natatorium, and became the first step in the efforts to create a downtown for the City of Gladstone. Moore co-chaired the city’s successful efforts in 2008 to become an All-America City, as well as the City’s winning 2010 Public Safety Sales Tax campaign. “With the untimely death of a sitting Councilman in 2011, I was appointed to fill his term on the Council and began my public service as a Council member,” explains Moore. “I have run unopposed for two, three-year terms, and served two terms as Mayor, in 2013 and 2016.” Moore's term as Mayor ended in April.

Mayor Kathy Rose of Riverside.
32
Northland Lifestyle | May 2017
Mayor Jean Moore just finished her second term.
Kathy Rose shares a family history of involvement in politics similar to Moore’s. Her mother, Betty Burch, served as Mayor of Riverside from 1988 until 2006 when she suffered an illness that prohibited her from continuing to hold an elected office. “I was well aware of the accomplishments that had been made during my mother’s tenure and had actually worked behind the scenes on several things that she led the city through during her years of service. When she could no longer serve, I made a decision to leave my career of 25 years as a court administrator and run for elected office. I wanted to continue the great things she had achieved. Prior to this happening with my mother, I had never aspired to run for elected office and certainly never took the position thinking it would be a career.” Now in her twelfth year as the Mayor of Riverside, Rose continues to add to her accomplishments. Since taking office, she has guided the evolution of her community’s small city focus to a larger, regional focus. Rose was President of the Mayor’s Metropolitan Caucus in 2009. The Caucus is a group of mayors from four counties: Cass, Clay, Platte, and Jackson. In 2010, she was selected to serve on the Missouri Municipal League Board of Directors, and was elected president of the group last September. Nan Johnston, Mayor of Parkville, recalls her journey to city leadership as unintentional. Through her volunteerism and participation in local campaigns, Johnston established herself as a leader in the community. “It never occurred to me to make politics a career, but when the opportunity arose, I took advantage of it. Nine years ago, the mayor (Gerry Richardson) was elected from my ward. He had one year left in his term on the Board of Aldermen. The city needed someone to fill the remainder of that term. One day, out of the blue, I received a call from the mayor. Apparently, my name had been submitted as a possible candidate. I did not have any political experience but had volunteered extensively in the community. I had worked on bond campaigns for a school district, organized neighborhood groups, worked with Scouts, was active at my daughter’s school, and contributed many hours to a spay and neuter clinic, as well as a cancer foundation. I was known to be an individual who enjoyed working throughout the community simply because I received great satisfaction from making a difference. Too, I was recognized as an individual who could work with others and get things done. When I first began on the board of aldermen, my daughter was in middle school,” recalls Johnston. “She was very interested in politics and attended many of the meetings. The schedule demands of an alderman weren’t as heavy as they are now that I’m mayor. The timing was perfect; I became mayor when she was a freshman in college. I am still a small business owner, which works well with mayoral duties. Since I am my own boss, it is easy to schedule around meetings and city-related events. At times, I work late hours, but it doesn’t feel like work because I’m engaged in two careers I enjoy immensely.”

The intuition of the individual(s) that submitted Johnston’s name for the leadership role for her Ward on the Board of Aldermen was well rewarded. Johnston found she very much enjoyed the challenge of politics, economic development, and working with the community. She also found out she was good at it. Her efforts resulted in her election as Mayor in April 2014 to a two-year term and re-elected in 2016 to a three-year term. Johnston, Moore, and Rose all agree serving their communities is a privilege. “I consider serving on the Gladstone Council as ‘public service’, not politics,” Moore confirms. “As Mayor, I believe there is nothing more rewarding than providing a resource for someone in need, developing partnerships, creating social spaces and environments, implementing recreational and healthy

programs, establishing relationships, and delivering the highest quality of service to increase someone’s quality of life,” adds Rose. “This is what being a mayor is all about,” smiles Johnston, “improving the quality of life in our community through leadership and partnerships.”

sandwich also comes with a side of your choice of seasoned fries, slaw, or fried okra. If you're just not in the mood for a sandwich (for shame!), then you can try one of the other cajun specialties like a cup of their seafood gumbo, the jambalaya, or red beans and rice. For my money, the jambalaya was the best with plenty of meat and a nice rich roux to start it off. If you need more spice, ask for one of their custom hot sauces from Louisiana. There are three to choose from and all pack a punch. I had to indulge in one Friday special, the spiced shrimp and crawfish po' boy with a blue crab florentine sauce. It didn't disappoint. The shrimp were so plentiful they spilled over the sides of the soft bread and made me pick up a fork to get every last bit. Not bad for a dinner that can be ready to pick up in 10 minutes. The business is stationary for the moment but Jones has plans to supplement the static location with a truck called Mudbugs Mobile Madness. The truck is solar powered and the only one of its kind in the city. Now that the weather has warmed, he's ready to hit the road. In a town like Kansas City, where it seems that every cuisine has its spot, we've been sorely lacking a good cajun restaurant. Not anymore. Mudbugs is filling that roll (get it?) quite nicely.

A MOTHER’S PRAYER ARTICLE RACHEL MURPHY
“[Motherhood is] the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force.
