appy Easter, friends! Although this winter was mild by any standard, it was still winter and I'm so glad to see my daffodils thriving despite late frosts. I'm excited to finally have warm breezes, midwestern thunderstorms, and the softly greening ground to walk upon with my daughter.

This month, we are all about the farm and the table--and how more people are placing a greater importance on the connection between the two of them. Peggy Parolin investigates the science behind the farm-totable movement with the farmers at Bayer Crop Science. Their work is making local farms more profitable which make our dinner tables richer places to dine.

Dr. Philippe is going back to his roots in a very meaningful way-this MD is giving back in his home country of Haiti. After Hurricane Matthew struck last year, he was emboldened to step up the work of his nonprofit, Sante Haiti and his tireless efforts are making a difference.

I'm particularly looking forward to Easter this year. The first year with a new baby is always full of exciting firsts and as she will be nearly seven months on April 16th, she's learning to explore the world around her more and more. I can't wait to show her the surprise of plastic eggs filled with (non-swallowable) trinkets, and maybe try some spring fruits and veggies as she learns to appreciate solid food. And while Easter isn't about the bonnets and bows, I can't deny my excitement at putting my daughter in the blue tulle dress that her Gigi bought for her and taking her to church. I now understand the feeling of fullness in my heart when I see my family all in a pew together on Sunday mornings, just as my mother did before me.

This is such an amazing time of year-everything seems new and full of possibility. Hold onto that feeling, friends. Spring is more than an equinox; it's a state of mind. Enjoy it!

The exhibition draws from the extensive photographic holdings of the National Archives to capture the patriotic fervor of draft registration, the emotional good-byes of men leaving for training camps, the “hoopla” of Liberty Loan drives, the craze for volunteerism, and the violence of vigilantism. During the “Great War,” photographs were frequently used in a variety of publications as well as in government reports and propaganda pieces. Today, these photographs serve as a valuable record of pro-war behavior, but occasionally capture dissent and unrest. This unique exhibit is on display for a limited time only; from April 5 to May 20 and is free to the public.

n a BBQ town like Kansas City, it takes a lot to stand out. So when the Silvio brothers, Nick and Sam decided to expand their meat kingdom from the Brazilian stylings of Em Chamas Brazilian Grill to a BBQ joint, they knew they had to take a different tactic. After

buying existing BBQ restaurant Hawg Jaw Fritz in Riverside, they decided to make it their own. They have since rebranded the business as Hawg Jaw Que and Brew and just recently relocated from Riverside to North Kansas City. In the new location at 900 Swift Street, they are in the nexus of craft beer: next door to

Big Rip Brewing Company and down the street from Cinder Block and Calibration Brewing, so their new name makes a lot of sense. So does their beer list which includes 27 different craft beers, many local and regional and eight craft sodas and root beers. Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti, UNICEF reported that nearly 600,000 children remained in need of humanitarian assistance, facing disease, hunger, and malnutrition.

Jonathan Philippe, M.D., a family care practitioner at Mosaic Life Care in Platte City, was born and raised in Haiti. As founder of Sante Haiti, Dr. Philippe did not hesitate to put the meager resources of his healthcare nonprofit to work. Exactly one month after Hurricane Matthew struck, the doctor undertook a four-day medical mission to the beleaguered nation.

“I was the only one traveling from the US. The team members in Haiti were already on the ground to assist. We distributed food and cholera medication because the water was not safe,” says Dr. Philippe. “Cholera was already a problem. We provided rehydration treatment and medicine distribution by working with local church groups. We helped more than 500 families.”

Cholera, an infectious, often fatal bacterial disease of the small intestine, is typically contracted from infected water supplies and causes severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Natural disasters such as Hurricane Matthew, or the devastating earthquake that registered 7.0 on the Richter scale in 2010, have led to widespread cholera outbreaks, killing thousands and sickening a few hundred thousand.

By November 23, 2016, the Pan American Health Organization and World Health Organization reported that 1.4 million people were in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. More than 175,000 people were placed in shelters. Total suspected cholera cases reached nearly 6,300 cases.

So, which is healthier, organic or local? Organic may be better for you, but not necessarily because of traditional nutrition measures. According to TIME magazine, a 2012 study conducted by Stanford’s Center for Health Policy concluded that organic produce is not more nutrition-dense than its generic counterparts. However, the research was widely panned for taking a narrow view of nutrition.

Counterarguments insist that food grown without chemical fertilizers and pesticides—which is to say organic—are by definition healthier choices.

As for the 29% of consumers who believe local food is more nutritious, they may be right. Most nutrients begin to degrade the moment a fresh piece of produce is picked; so the sooner it gets to you the better. Many studies have shown that a peach or berry picked closer to ripeness is more nutritious than a fruit—organic or not—picked before or after its peak of ripeness.

“We picked the name Heritage, because the roots of our company are based on generations of landscaping.

I’ve been involved since I was 15, and have spent time doing everything from digging ditches to managing. I have a degree in aeronautical science, but after an old football injury cut that career short, I turned to landscaping.

I learned how to use the CAD system to create designs, and designing outdoor spaces is what I really enjoy doing,” Managing Partner Mike Perdue says.
