A Very Northland Valentine's Day

FEBRUARY 2017 PUBLISHER

Matthew Perry | Matthew@LifestylePubs.com

Dear Readers,

EDITOR

I have to admit--I've never been a big Valentine's Day person. Sure, I love romance but I also don't want my husband to spend 500% more on flowers than he would in January or March, just because Cupid said he should. I'm more of lowkey. If we go out, it will probably be to the White Horse Pub where we can make googly eyes at each other over our daughter in her car seat and fish and chips. But if you want to go all out for Valentine's Day, then we have some ideas for you. For some social but romantic dining plans, you could head to Trago, the new tapas restaurant in Kansas City North. With great ambience and plates made for sharing, you could easily brush hands over the patatas bravas and feel the spark of love. Maybe you're searching for a special beverage, one hand picked that treks across the globe to land in your cup. Hugo Tea has what you're looking for. Read our story about the company that is elevating tea to the same level that craft beer, wine and coffee have reached. They will find the perfect blend for the tea lover in your home. If you want to read about love of a more actionable sort, then check out our story about Run to Stop It. This campaign is raising money to combat sex trafficking. Real love is setting someone free from their chains and the people lacing up their sneakers are running to make that happen. February can be a dreary month with the exception of the proliferation of red and pink on the 14th, but I actually like it. It's the sigh after a long holiday season and subsequent goal setting January. February is bated with anticipation of spring but also happy to burrow down and enjoy the quiet of the coldest month of the year. Enjoy this month of peace and love, my friends.

MIEROTTO JEWELERS BREAKS GROUND IN NKC North Kansas City held a groundbreaking December 7 for the new Meierotto Jewelers' headquarters. Attending were members of the Meierotto family and officials with McCown Gordon Construction and Davidson Architecture & Engineering. The event was also the first element in North Kansas City’s 62-acre redevelopment. Just east of I-29/I-35, the project is converting a former industrial stretch of Armour Road into a mixed-use development likely to have regional impact. The new Meierotto headquarters will be a two-story, 37,000-squarefoot building that will also include a retail store and is expected to open in the fall. Meierotto’s will employ 45 people at the new site. Meierotto's will be one of two North Kansas City jewelry headquarters when Berkshire Hathaway's Helzberg Diamonds completes its planned move from 4311 NE Vivion Road in Kansas City. North Kansas City began acquiring the 62-acre site over 15 years ago. Previous businesses included Payless Cashways, the ADM flour mill and Habco Inc. Other plans for the site include a hotel, a conference center, entertainment areas, restaurants, an apartment project, a grocery story and other retail locations.

SPECTRUM: AUTISM, ART, AND MUSIC EXHIBIT COMES TO THE AMERICAN JAZZ MUSEUM The American Jazz Museum launches 2017 with a new and innovative exhibition, Spectrum: Autism, Art, and Music. This exhibition will feature Denver digital artist Juliette Hemingway and her son Javari Eugene-Poet Chase, who will also present works in the exhibition. Javari was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Deficit Disorder when he was 10 years old. As a parent to a child diagnosed with Autism, Juliette chose early on to use visual and musical art as vehicles for education. Using jazz as a focal point, she enhances her son’s ability to grow and function in a world that often isolates and marginalizes children and adults with special requirements. The exhibit highlights over 70 extraordinary works of digital imagery that illuminate relationships between Autism and jazz music. The exhibit is now open and closes April 30th. Complimentary programming for children, families, adult and artists will be presented throughout the exhibition. Programs range from artist talks, STEAM activities, virtual reality art lessons, music programs and Autism resources and events.

emories. That's what Trago, the new tapas restaurant in Kansas City near

Liberty, is based on. Kandi Kerns, the chef/ owner is capturing the feeling and essence of dining experiences long past and making them available for the hungry diner today. The restaurant opened in late 2016 after Kerns completed quite a bit of the build out herself. She has a small staff and enjoys being hands on with everything from menu planning to bourbon tasting. In short, she's creating the restaurant that she's always wanted to enjoy, even if that means 16 hour days for her. The restaurant opened with an abbreviated menu of hot and cold tapas plus paellas and cheese and charcuterie plates. Kerns says that while she intended to expand the menu to a more expansive menu, she now plans on keeping the grand opening menu and instead offering daily specials. On Sundays, she offers brunch items as well with specials on bloody marys and a variety of breakfast items like huevos rancheros, frittatas, and Spanish tortillas. While tapas is a Spanish style of eating, Trago combines both Spanish and Latin American cuisine. The memory that she is recreating is of a hidden restaurant that her grandmother took her to in her grandmother’s home country of Guatemala. Some of the best dishes on the menu harken back to those Latin American roots, as I would find out at a casual lunch with friends. Since sharing is the theme of a tapas restaurant, we dove in with gusto. Plates like the black beans and plantains nailed the flavor of Central America. Kerns is using many of her grandmother's recipes as a base and it shows. While many may think that refried beans are merely a forgotten side dish on a Mexican combo plate, with love and care and lots of garlic, they can be a delicious focus. The plantains were thick cut, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, a great accompaniment to the savory beans. For a more Spanish themed dish, the fresh goat cheese in tomato sauce was a hit. The goat cheese was warmed just enough to spread easily and despite being in the dead of winter, CONTINUED >

the tomato sauce hinted at flavorful summer tomatoes. For those that want a little Mexican flair, Trago serves street tacos with either chicken, beef, pork or shrimp. The chicken version was my favorite with a tangy cilantro cream sauce. Trago also offers charcuterie and cheese plates, outfitted with a wide variety of garnishes, including candied almonds, olives, and jam. There are several proteins and cheeses to choose from and plates are priced for how many people would enjoy them. A word to the wise--don't overestimate the portions per person. They are delicious and you will want more than one piece per person. The bar at Trago has a variety of options, from Spanish wines to house-made cocktails to a soon to be stellar bourbon selection. Kerns says that her intent with Trago was to create an atmosphere where diners could meet each other from table to table and make new friendships along the way. To that end, the dining room is warm and inviting with tables ideal for expanding. And when the weather is warmer, a great patio space invites people to lounge. Trago is still finding its feet but the restaurant and its small staff are learning fast. What they do know is that their smaller menu of favorites is a hit and they are all putting their hearts and souls into the effort and it shows. For the winter, Trago is open for dinner only Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and open for lunch and dinner Thursday through Sunday. So grab a friend or make a friend when you get there. The staff at Trago is happy either way.

A

civilized society must rise up and say “not in our city, not in our nation, not in our world!”

These are the words of Phillip O’Reilly: husband, father, grand-

father, and pastor of Rock of KC, a nondenominational church in the Northland. When O’Reilly learned that there is worldwide demand for children who are trafficked for sex with adults, he knew he had to do something. “It literally broke my heart. Having grandchildren of my own, it was unconscionable for me to do nothing,” he says. After his daughter challenged him to run a half-marathon with her, he had an idea. “Why not run for a cause,” he says. “Why not raise money and awareness of human trafficking?” He decided to do just that and ran his first half-marathon for the cause of human trafficking, and he invited his church to join him by running and raising funds, all of which are donated to organizations that are directly involved in stopping human trafficking. Traffickers typically target youth, who are coerced and deceived, usually through the exploitation of their circumstances. Many have a history of abuse and find themselves alone and in compromising situations. It’s a worldwide problem, one that Kansas City is familiar with; according to published accounts, just last October, an international FBI investigation led to the arrest of 12 alleged pimps and 14 alleged johns on state and federal charges. The investigation included areas in Kansas City, Independence, and Overland Park and was the 10th such effort executed by the FBI. “What is going on right here in Kansas City is an evil that, in my opinion, is inexcusable to do nothing about,” says O’Reilly. “We can’t let the fact that we can’t do everything stop us from doing something.” That something is Run to Stop It, a campaign that raises funds and awareness to put a stop to sex trafficking by participating in Kansas City area runs: full and half marathons and 5ks. There are different ways to participate: run, manage a CONTINUED >

water station, or donate money. Every cent, O’Reilly says, goes to organizations dedicated to stopping human trafficking; no administrative fees are withheld. “This is an abolition movement,” says O’Reilly. “Innocent children are being held in modern day slavery and being sold repeatedly over and over again for adults to have sex with. It must be abolished and we invite anyone not currently involved in this movement to join us.” In its first year, close to 100 people ran. In the beginning, funds were donated to a ministry in Texas called For the Silent, which is an organization involved directly in fighting human trafficking. When the decision was made three years ago to support a ministry in the Kansas City area—because Kansas City is a major hub for human trafficking activity—O’Reilly changed the name to Run to Stop It. Proceeds currently go to Exodus Cry, a ministry in Grandview, and Restoration House of Greater Kansas City. Exodus Cry is determined to abolish sex slavery through Christ-centered prevention, intervention, and holistic restoration of victims. Restoration House of Greater Kansas City is a faith based, long-term, residential program for survivors of sex trafficking. “Last year we were able to give $100,000.00,” says O’Reilly. “This year, we gave $80,000.00 each to Exodus Cry and Restoration House of Greater Kansas City.” Benjamin Nolot of Exodus Cry says that Run to Stop It is a critical step in engaging the community in awareness and understanding that human trafficking affects all of us. “We must stand together in solidarity with our sisters who are enslaved and exploited to demand their freedom,” says Nolot.
