This truly is the most wonderful time of year. As 2017 draws to a close, I have so much for which to be thankful--a wonderful family, a safe, warm home, plenty of food to eat, and enough to share. Our year has had a few surprises, mostly good ones, and I'm excited to see what 2018 brings!

Our December issue is full of surprises too. Our feature story is one of miracles--the literal kind. Our photographer, Joel Schneider has had a roller coaster year as well as he and wife, Robin, welcomed their daughter Eliora at 21 weeks gestation, an age that is not normally considered viable. But through the power of prayer and modern medicine, little Ellie is still fighting, smashing expectations and winning hearts in the St. Luke's NICU. Her story will make you believe in miracles. If you're looking for a gift for the person that has everything, check out our giving back gift guide. Whether you're looking for something to wrap or simply a great organization to donate to, we have options for you. What's better than knowing that someone else's life is better because of your gift? Personally, I'm looking forward to a holiday season full of family and friends. Without ever exchanging a gift, I feel blessed to have a family to call my own. I have always loved Christmas but having the opportunity to experience the holiday through my daughter's eyes, and to some extent, her grandparents' eyes, is like reliving it as a child again myself. We already have Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown score playing on repeat and I can't wait to start the Christmas baking. All of the trappings, of course, are not the point of the holiday--they are just fun ways to celebrate the real gift, the baby in the manger, the savior, who is Christ the Lord. And if you are one of our Jewish brothers and sisters, Chag Urim Sameach. Be grateful this season. Be kind. Be generous for we are all blessed. Thank you for reading. huge success. Organizers of the event, which was a benefit for the low-cost spay and neuter clinic in Gladstone, were thrilled with the turnout and funds raised. People who attended had the opportunity to bid on 22 new designer bags and 30 ‘lovingly carried’ through a silent auction. Each bag came with a large gift bag filled with goodies worth $50-$75 dollars. Two designer bags were auctioned off live at the event. About 100 people came out to support NAWS at Trezo Mare in the Village of Briarcliff Sept. 26. Just over $3,100 was raised through the silent auction, live auction, and raffles. Goldie Arnold President of NAWS says, “We couldn’t have done this event without the support of our donors and to Trezo Mare for providing a wonderful venue.” Since opening in 2012, NAWS has spayed/neutered more than 6,500 pets, given 4,475 vaccinations, 1650 microchips and helped more than 10,000 families.

The menu is small, just like the space, but has something for everyone and all at a very reasonable price point. The menu prices range from $2.59 for a cup 'o dumplings, either pork and shrimp or tofu and mushroom, to the Kamikaze bowl, which at $7.99 is the Shaka version of Longboards' OG style wraps. In between is a full collection of perfectly lunch sized bowls that either hit the spot for what you're craving or show you what you didn't know you wanted. The idea of fusion cuisine is practically the official Filipino cuisine. With myriad cultural influences, Filipino cuisine combines elements from Asia, Spain, India, and American cuisine. Yap wanted to 22

spots but it didn't stop me from enjoying them.

My next bowl moved a bit west on the globe--to Italy. The Ray Liotta bowl features bucatini pasta with a short rib beef and mushroom marinara sauce, topped with aged cheese, fresh herbs, and 'shaka toppings.' While the beef could use a touch more simmer time, the flavor was right on--rich and meaty. Both bowls are lunch sized portions so if you're especially hungry, plan on getting a side dish of a hot dog musubi (think spam sushi) or dumplings. Sometimes, when you're sitting in a spot that reminds you of Longboards, you just can't do without a wrap. And as you look at the surf and skateboard related decor, that is likely to happen. Never fear; there are two wraps on the menu as well. I tried the Da Jeepney ($6.49), and it didn't disappoint. With a base of garlic fried rice topped with an over easy egg and pork torta, it's grilled and warm when you unwrap it. If you're cutting carbs, the Shaka Noodle Shack is not for you. If you're not, then you're in heaven. The bright space is sure to be a hit with local high school students, moviegoers, and workers around the area. It's currently focused on the lunch crowd and only offers evening hours on Fridays and Saturdays, but Yap says that they are watching traffic and may extend their hours if there is demand. In the meantime, get over to the Shack for a bowl of good vibes for lunch.

s it turns out – at least with bagel recipes – the 73rd time is the charm. “Magically, recipe #73, I took a bite, and I’m like, ‘That’s it, you

nailed it. This is it, it’s perfect.’” Janna Linde was the official taster for all 72 variations that came before that perfect combination, as her husband, Pete, tweaked and toiled in their kitchen almost every night for months before that. The persistence paid off. The couple opened the third location of Meshuggah Bagels, their New York-style bagel shop, in Liberty in early November, following positive response to their first two locations on 39th Street in Kansas City and in Overland Park. The name – which is Yiddish for “crazy” – was born from a trip from Kansas City to New York when the two were first dating. As a New Jersey native, Pete told Janna she needed to try two things: a slice of local pizza and a New York-style bagel. One bite of the bagel launched the future name. “I lost my mind,” she says. “It was crazy good.” And to all us Midwesterners who feel like we’ve had plenty of bagels before? “That’s just bread with a hole in it,” Janna says. “You can’t compare; it’s like apples and oranges. There is definitely a difference.” And that’s the reason for the 73 tries to get the recipe just right; it’s why they had to lug back a 10,000-pound oven they bought from a Long Island family who retired after four generations of bagel making; and why they splurge for the highest-quality flour, even if the extra cost cuts into profits. “There’s a reason that for 150 years people have been eating bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese,” Pete says. “It’s not skipping any steps. They knew something back then.”

So, with that perfect recipe of five ingredients – plus homemade cream cheese and fresh fish (never frozen) flown in weekly from Brooklyn – the couple have transported a taste of New York to the metro area. “Inevitably, if we give them a sample, they lose their mind and they order it,” Janna says, “and then we’ve got ‘em for life.” As Liberty residents themselves, the newest location made perfect sense, especially with their commercial kitchen located just down the road in Pleasant Valley. However, that’s not to say the choice didn’t raise a few eyebrows along the way. “If we would’ve gone to some consulting company and said, ‘Where should we put our next store?’ I don’t think their first suggestion would have been Liberty,” Pete says. “The irony is there’s a possibility that Liberty will be our highest-selling store, even with people saying, ‘Wow, what a weird location to do it.’” Any early skepticism, however, was quickly devoured by the outpouring of response from Northlanders, the pair says. The new location also offers an expanded menu, with the addition of a smoked turkey sandwich and a pesto parmesan ham sandwich. “Everyone’s been so welcoming and so appreciative and so excited,” Janna says. “It’s been absolutely a pleasure; we’ve had so much fun.” In addition to offering a product previously absent from the market, the pair says area residents appreciate the local ownership, especially while they’re surrounded by so many chain food sellers. “I think people are excited when it’s an independent place,” Janna says. “There are so few places today that are really like that, where people recognize you and they know your name, and you’re a regular, and it matters. We’ve become friends with so many of our customers. They don’t just come in for bagels, they come in to talk and visit, and just sit and hang out.” In fact, those first visitors are already becoming repeat customers at the new Liberty location, many showing up every day. But Janna isn’t surprised. After all, it happened to her, too. “Once you’ve had them, you’re hooked.”

Not only was Ellie incredibly small and lightweight, her body and organs were not fully developed. “She had not even developed fat yet,” Robin says.

Specialized health care in St. Luke’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) also played a vital role to beat the odds in Ellie’s case. A premature birth happens between 29 to 34 weeks of gestation. A micro-premature birth occurs at 28 weeks or less. The survival rate of micro-premature babies is slim. The 3B Level NICU at St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza provides care for premature babies at 22 weeks and older – a timeframe considered the minimum for a viable birth. CONTINUED >

“At 21 weeks, there’s a one-percent chance of survival,” Joel says. “Ellie was only expected to live for minutes. She’s a miracle.” Ellie’s early debut came with health complications. “She has no major complications that would lead to cerebral palsy, autism, or life-threatening brain bleeds,” Joel says.

“Her skin was not ready to be touched,” Joel says. “The friction would rip her skin open.” Post-birth, Ellie’s undeveloped immune system required her to be isolated for protection against a virus or bacteria that could lead to illness or death.

Ellie needs to maintain sugar levels. Then she can learn how to feed. She also needs to stabilize her breathing without oxygen support in a hospital setting, in order to ensure she can breathe while sleeping. Because Ellie requires ongoing medical attention in the hospital, Robin won’t start her maternity leave until her daughter can come home. She went back to work as an administrative assistant for the Gladstone chief of police only a week after giving birth. “I have no idea when I will be able to take maternity leave,” Robin says. Vigilance continues as Ellie grows stronger. Meanwhile, the Schneiders have received immense support from family, friends, co-workers, and others. “We’ve had support from our church with funding and cooked meals,” Joel says. “They help us stay strong and positive on this long NICU journey. Our faith has played a large role. With faith in God, anything is possible. We’ve had lots of opportunities to be discouraged.” “It’s a sucker punch for a doctor to say that your baby is not going to make it,” Robin says. She and Joel have heard this prediction more than once. Yet, Ellie’s triumph has made her a celebrity among the ranks of doctors and healthcare professionals at St. Luke’s. The bond with fellow parents of premature babies in the NICU is even more tight-knit. “This whole experience has put us in a different group of people,” Robin says. “We’ve gotten involved with NICU groups and talk to other parents to give them hope. The NICU family is a tribe unto its own.” Once Ellie leaves the hospital, the Schneiders face new challenges. Ellie will require high-level care. Her parents must also raise a son, maintain relationships with family and others, shop for groceries, and complete daily tasks with Ellie by their side.

For the fashionista: The Global Orphan Project has been changing lives around the world for more than a decade now, but their most recent offshoot keeps things closer to home. The Go Exchange (GOEX) supports communities every step of the way, starting right here at home. While on the surface, GOEX makes t-shirts, its focus is really on providing a path to independence for people at every stage of the garment's creation. The shirts are made from American cotton, grown in South Carolina, and milled to be super soft and comfortable. That cotton is then made into fabric and cut and sewn at an apparel manufacturing facility in Haiti. Another sweatshop t-shirt? Nope. These factories pay a living wage and offer humane working conditions so that workers can support their families. After shirts are sewn, they come back to Kansas City where fairly paid workers do custom screen printing or create designs like their popular Kansas City skyline, available for $25. All profits benefit the GO Project's work around the world, so every step of the process is beneficial to those that need help. Needless to say, this will be on my Christmas wish list! For the Saturday Sleep-In Queen What's better than a lazy Saturday morning in bed? Almost nothing. So imagine if you didn't have that luxury. Imagine that you don't have a bed at all. That's the reality for many people in Kansas City. Sleepyhead Beds was founded by Monica Starr, a CASA (court appointed special advocate) who saw the needs of the kids coming through the court systems. Since 2010, the organization has delivered more than 12,000 beds to families that need them. Beds are donated by community members and then sanitized and distributed. Although Sleepyhead Beds distributes every three weeks, there are still more than 1,100 families on their wait list, most with two to three children. Sleepyhead Beds is always in need of donations of mattresses in twin, full, and queen sizes, as well as crib mattresses and pack and plays. New and gently used bedding is also needed. Along with each mattress, a new pillow is included. Pillows cannot be recycled by law, so new pillow donations are always welcome. If you have time but not materials, volunteers are always needed for distribution days. And if you have money but not time, $60 will cover the cost of collecting, sanitizing, and redistributing a bed with bedding and a new pillow. For the person that loves their Grandma Seniors are one of the most unappreciated and unseen populations during the holidays. If you have fond memories of a grandparent that has passed or lives far away, consider donating to the Platte Senior Services. The Center provides a center of activity for those that may find themselves alone on the holidays--they offer Bingo monthly with prizes that include household items that seniors on a fixed income might need, as well as holiday dinners.
