Being Good Ain’t Easy!

ou know the sensation when your arm hairs stand up because you’ve been powerfully impacted by something or someone around you? That feeling is the finest way to describe my experience with our annual 2017 “Best of Northland” Readers’ Choice Issue. I’m genuinely inspired by the “why” behind what makes people in our community shine! Being the best isn’t about knowing the most. Throughout September, I was personally honored with the opportunity to visit with many of our winners this year - and look forward to meeting others throughout the coming months. Many I’ve encountered have surprised me when asked, “what makes you different?” and “what ultimately has contributed to your success?” I found it was not because they came from privilege, in fact, many did not. Overwhelmingly, it’s because they believe in the simple yet profound reality that, “one can’t keep what they have without giving it away.” It’s been refreshing to be reminded of these individuals' constitutions and their dedication. After all, “to those who much is given much is expected.” Please pardon all the quotes as I’m humble enough to acknowledge the wisdom of others. Stephen Hawking likely says it best, “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” Everyone can think of someone along their journey who has helped shift and shape them. Be mindful and pay it forward

at every opportunity. I’ve rarely heard people say they wished they were less generous (which far outweighs the alternative of regret). Integrity dictates my desire to illustrate how “Northland’s Best” arrived at their victories. First, thank you Mayor Johnston (Parkville) for being our Auditor reviewing the tabulations. To our loyal readers, thank you for voicing your opinion from start to finish this year! This was a genuinely organic opportunity where no one was positioned with preference or bias. These victories were not purchased; rather these organizations earned it the old fashion way through word of mouth. In June, we asked people to lend their voice and nominate the 'Best' with a fill-in-the-blank format. We took the top five nominees (in some cases close ties) to the next level – the voting round in July. These nominees became winners, if and only if, they made the second cut in their category’s voting round. The fact we received over 100k individual votes caught even us by surprise! The journeys of the individuals responsible for these organizations' success truly warrants the spotlight we aim in this issue. We’re grateful many will use this issue as a reference for the next year. We delight in squashing some of those “What's for dinner?” family conundrums. See you around town!

replaces the former Metro North Center. The long-awaited project will include a golf and entertainment complex when it opens next summer. Similar to TopGolf in Overland Park and the recently announced Driv Golf Lounge + Brewhouse in North Kansas City, the facility will be operated by Troon, a global leader in golf course management and development based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Though as yet unnamed, the center will feature a 52,000-square-foot complex and will include 64 climate-controlled, technology-enhanced hitting bays and suites on three levels. The golf center will be designed for all ages and skill levels. Guests will be able to “play” several famous golf courses as their shots are projected on high-definition television screens. Players can use advanced tracking technology and receive real-time data on every swing. The restaurant portion of the center will include an 8,000-squarefoot sports bar with interactive televisions. Also planned are a member’s grill and rooftop view lounge. Metro North Crossing is a $187.5 million mixed-use project being developed on the site of the former Metro North Mall.

North Kansas City Hospital’s Home Health program offers a range of services to help patients stay in their home while recovering from an illness or injury or while living with a medical condition. The program delivers skilled nursing, supportive care, therapy and social services to residents of Clay, Platte, Ray and Jackson Counties, servicing more than 3,000 patients each year.
TRINITY LOGISTICS BECOMES MEMBER-OWNED Trinity Logistics is a leading 3PL (third-party logistics) company specializing in freight arrangement and supply chain solutions. Based in Seaford, Delaware, Trinity has Regional Service Centers and agents throughout the US. The local KC office opened in 2003 and now employs a staff of 30, serving both local, and nationwide customers. Until recently, Trinity has been owned by the Banning family since 1979. This year, however, Trinity became team member-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). On August 29, Trinity hosted a celebration to honor those teammates with over ten years employment with Trinity, as being fully vested in the ESOP. TRI-COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ANNUAL BANQUET Over 450 people attended the Tri-County Annual Banquet at Argosy Casino on August 28th. Three-time Olympian and mental health awareness advocate Suzy Favor-Hamilton was the keynote speaker. In a Q&A session with Tri-County CEO Tom Petrizzo, Hamilton openly conveyed personal aspects of her struggles with bipolar disorder.

They do this through their 35 fully furnished apartments through out Platte County that they offer free of charge to homeless families. The community supports this organization because it is measurable. Each month families graduate the 90-day program and share stories of successfully paying off their debt, and developing a savings account and budget that will sustain them into the future. HPC recently added a young adult housing program to their services to address the homeless high school students in the area. HPC doesn’t take government funds and relies on the community support to operate this program. They have two thrift shops, one off of 64th Street and I-29 and one in Platte City, that accept gently used items. They have a pick up service for furniture and bigger items that can’t fit into a car. HPC’s biggest fundraiser of the year is being held on October 7th at Embassy Suites – KCI.
