t's here! The annual Pets issue has arrived and I couldn't be more excited to share this month's stories with you. Pets are a huge part of our lives but in this issue, we take a look into the lives of working animals.

When it comes to crowd control, there's not much that's more effective, according to the KCPD, than a horse-mounted officer. In this issue, we ride along with the KC Mounted Patrol as they make inroads not just in keeping the peace but also in forging relationships with the community. In a news world where so much of the coverage is controversial, the Mounted Patrol is reaching out and shaking hands and hooves with those that may never come into contact with horses otherwise.

Bees are also a focus. Would they count as pets? Most would say no, but as the Ballenger and Knapton families, owners of Bee Haven Farms, can attest, bees are some of the hardest working animals around. Take a peek inside the hive and find out where your honey comes from.

American Pet focuses more on traditional pets, grooming the cats and dogs of the Northland in a spa-like setting. After several decades in the Northland, they have a reputation for quality and happy customers, canine, feline, and homo sapien alike.

I'm an unabashed dog lover and I've waxed poetic about my two pups many times. But as you'll read in this month's Parting Thoughts, my fur-covered world is about the change with the birth of my first child. Still, I'm determined to keep my dogs as an integral part of my family. I can't wait for my daughter to meet them.

Because Fido Says So! T

his month our focus is on our four legged friends and companions. What woof we be without them? I’m writing this letter shortly after having a ‘conversation’ about being an all around ‘good little human’ with my preschooler & first-grader. Fellow parents, can you visualize the image of a dog turning their head sideways now with confusion? Yip, after the zillionth time of mommy hearing …

“Why do I have to share with my sister?”

“Maggie did (this)!” or “Cecilia did (that)!” <<crickets chirping – cancel that - cicadas yelling>> The dog that goes by…“because Mommy said so!” just wasn’t hunting that day! I redirected, explaining animals can teach us how to be better people. I lead with, “Girls, here’s a few things we can learn from our pets”. Upon further reflection, I’m certain I got just as much out of our sit down.

Ah, the old adage - forgive yourself and others. How long does a cat stay mad when you step on its tail? Well…we are talking about cats (from a dog lover’s perspective). In all seriousness – why take ourselves so seriously? With respect to a cat’s nine lives – why not live this life first class and check the luggage? Just sayin’!

Bacchus (our Doberman) never over-thinks the past nor worries about the future. At the dog park, we simply enjoy our togetherness, soak up the sun, and take the wind through our whiskers. I recently heard FEAR as the acronym ‘False Evidence Appearing Real”.

Animal lover or not – who couldn’t lighten up watching a puppy first discover their own reflection in the mirror?

Admittedly, when my mother reads this, she will belly laugh by these paybacks. To her delight I’ll humbly reply, “after all – I am my mother’s daughter!”

The 4% Withdrawal Rule: An Outdated Retirement Strategy?

M

any retirees wonder how much they can withdraw from their retirement portfolios each year, while still having a strong asset base. A common guideline has been 4%, known as the “4% Withdrawal Rule.” In recent years, this strategy has sparked major discussions among academics and professionals as to whether or not it’s still a viable guide for today’s retirees.

Before we can answer the question, we first need to understand what the strategy actually means.

The 4% Withdrawal Rule began over 20 years ago. It’s a suggested formula for withdrawing money from your investments while still making it last through retirement, approximately 30 years. Using this method, let’s say that you retire with $1 million of assets. In each year of retirement, the rule said you could withdraw $40,000, which is 4% of $1 million.

While it may seem like a 4% withdrawal rate is a good “rule” of thumb, what it fails to take into account is stock market volatility and inflation – both of which have become familiar in recent years and may impact your retirement strategy. Life expectancy has increased now too, so your money may need to last even longer than 30 years. Overall, each person’s strategy is different and there is not a “one size fits all” when it comes to your retirement income.

Wade Pfau Ph.D., a retirement expert renowned in the finance industry for his research on the matter, currently states that “in a lower interest rate world, a 3% withdrawal rate reflects something closer to a chance of success than a 4% withdrawal rate historically provided….”* Although growth of your assets during your earning years is important, the payout during your retirement years is critical.

Being aware of your financial options will help ensure that your money can provide the lifestyle you desire for as long as you live.** One of those financial options is a product that is designed to guarantee principal protection,

offer potential returns and deliver retirement income…possibly for life: a Fixed Index Annuity, or FIA.** With FIAs, when the related market index has grown during your crediting period, you participate in a portion of those gains. If the index experiences a low, your locked-in earnings are not affected, thus providing protection for both your principal and credited interest.

In the end, it’s important to find a balance between your lifestyle and having enough financial resources if the unexpected occurs.

“We have some customers that have been coming here for years,” comments Edwards. “They started here with my mom, and now three to four dogs later, that same family is coming to me.”

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the formation of the Mounted Patrol section, a specialized unit of the Kansas City Police Department.

Led by Sergeant Joey Roberts, a 19-year veteran in the department, the patrol consists of eight officers and eight horses. Coincidentally, most of those officers live in the Northland but work throughout the city. Unless the weather is excessively hot or cold, or road conditions are unsafe in winter, the unit operates full-time on a year-round basis to police the community and provide crowd control.

Perhaps most importantly, the Mounted Patrol fosters goodwill as ambassadors for the police department, particularly in high-crime areas.

“The Mounted Patrol is a catalyst for bridging gaps with the community,” says Sgt. Roberts.

“Kids love seeing the horses and flag us down to come over. The kids know the horses by name.”

The unit rotates its community policing patrols in different neighborhoods in the city and suburbs.

During patrols, officers address calls for service and promote youth outreach as part of its public relations. The unit is present for large crowded events such as Rockfest, the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and Mayor’s Night Out. The Mounted Patrol visits the Country Club Plaza every Saturday night from spring through fall.

On patrol, the sergeant rides Commander, a tall bay Holsteiner that was formerly a dressage horse.

Commander was assigned to the unit in May 2008 after being donated by Jim and Terri Neese of Olathe, Kansas. It’s quite a sight when standing next to Sgt. Roberts riding Commander and towering above a street-level view.

Each horse stands at least 15.2 hands high, or more than five feet. As a unit of measurement, a hand equals four inches and is calculated from the hooves to the highest point of the withers, or the ridge between the horse’s shoulder blades. The horses weigh from 1,100 to 2,300 pounds and, accordingly, establish a formidable presence.

The presence of an officer and horse working in unison makes an impression, especially during events with large crowds. Sgt. Roberts says, “One officer on a horse equals ten to twelve officers on the ground.”

The intent of the mounted patrol is not intimidation but rather engagement as they serve the community. Given the heightened tension between police departments and the public in some areas of the nation, positive interaction on horseback is a powerful tool to build and reinforce trust.

The police department also sponsors a fall youth riding program as part of its outreach.

“We work with eight kids each season that have never ridden,” says Sgt. Roberts. “We teach them basic horsemanship.”

The program helps the Mounted Police connect to the public.

“The horses help humanize officers to the public,” says Roberts.

“Otherwise, kids’ contact with law enforcement is minimal. They realize that we’re normal people that also have kids.”

Mounted Patrols through neighborhoods and highly visible areas of the city have the greatest impact and extend an implicit invitation to interact.

“When we go down the same street on a horse, people come out of their homes to talk to us and pet the horses. It closes that gap with the community,” says officer Jake Emig, who has served with the Kansas City Police Department since 2009, and has been with the Mounted Patrol since 2015.

Emig hails from east-central Missouri and grew up around horses since he was a child. His horse, O’Sullivan, or “Sully,” is a sorrel Paint/Quarterhorse that stands at 16.2 hands and formerly competed in extreme cowboy competitions. O’Sullivan is named after fallen officer John J. O’Sullivan, who was killed in the line of duty in December of 1978. Like many of the horses in the unit, Sully is patient with a calm temperament around other horses and humans. Each horse does have its own personality and behavior patterns.

The Mounted Patrol horses undergo training for sensitivity to aggravation and all manner of noises that would be encountered on patrol.

“They’re already broken and ready to ride when they arrive,” Emig says. “We expose them to anything and everything noisewise – jackhammers, sirens, firecrackers – to desensitize them.”

The horses also learn to ride single-file, in two columns, and in a wheel formation. They are trained for vehicle extraction and how to safely push back crowds.

Emig chats with Sully as if they are best friends. The bond between the officers and the horses is tight-knit. Sully has developed a bit of fame through his Instagram account, @sullykcpd, where photographs are posted of his adventures and patrols throughout the city.

“Sully likes to keep his followers up to date,” says Emig. “We encounter a lot of people that didn’t know Kansas City had a Mounted Patrol unit.”

The officers in the mounted patrol, such as Dan Easley, Travis Hennegin, and Doug King, also treat each other like family.

Each officer works with the same horse “for continuity.” All officers in the unit are responsible for the horses’ care that includes grooming, mucking stalls, feeding and other tasks. A farrier comes every six weeks to replace horseshoes.

The horses eat approximately 1,000 bales of hay in summer. The department pays for the hay, seed, and bedding. Other expenses are defrayed by a (501(c)3) nonprofit organization called the “Friends of the KC Mounted Patrol” that accepts tax-deductible 26

donations. Donations help to purchase tack and equipment and allow the officers to attend training. The organization also has a Facebook page under the same name to promote awareness.

“Without the nonprofit, we probably wouldn’t exist,” says Roberts.

“We’re trying to build our own facility and stable.”

Currently, the Mounted Patrol unit is based in stables at Lake of the Woods in Swope Park.

Emig acknowledges that “there are challenging days when the horses don’t behave, but we get them squared away.” Despite those “off” days, he loves to spend time with the horses.

Emig says, “I get to do exactly what I loved as a kid.”

Community-based policing in Kansas City gets a helping hand, and a few extra legs, from the popular Mounted Patrol unit. Next time they make an appearance, there’s no need to horse around.

Proverbs 24:13 ~ Pure honey is a taste bud’s treasure. This sweet nectar has been a symbol of good throughout history. Honey has been used as barter since the beginning of time and in thousands of recipes because of its rich, sweet flavor.

Bee Haven Farms, owned and operated by Barry and Joyce Ballenger and Jack Knapton, of Liberty, Mo. has earned a huge following of repeat customers. Visit the Liberty, Missouri Farmer’s Market on any Saturday morning and the Ballenger’s grandson, Keaton, will sell you honey collected from 30 bee hives, but come early. They sell out of their smaller bottles of honey in two hours, a common occurrence.

Some customers use Bee Haven Farm’s products for health reasons. Honey has been used for healing powers throughout history.

Raw honey can provide energy boosts with carbohydrates supplying energy and strength while reducing muscle fatigue. When possible, it’s best to buy locally grown, organic raw honey produced by bees close to the environment where you live. Consuming honey from your area is beneficial because of immune strengthening benefits.

But there is more to this business than robbing hives. Working with bees begins with understanding these fascinating creatures.

“Most bees are docile and will tolerate humans, especially with little vibration or sudden movement like shaking the bees around too quickly,” Barry Ballenger says. “I was nervous the first time we suited up to work with bees and didn’t want to get stung. There is a class system in every hive that generally consists of 20,000 to 40,000 bees. This starts with a single queen per hive and female worker bees. Drones or male bees complete the population. The Ballenger’s learned never to put two hives together, as the bees aren’t always accepting of one another.

Every hive’s queen has a scent the population is comfortable with. They become uncomfortable with a different scent, creating a challenge when the original queen dies. The new queen will bring

a different scent and the population becomes accustomed or they kill her.

Radical changes occur in a hive before winter. The queen senses that workers are no longer bringing in pollen and senses the nectar feeding season is over. This prompts her to prepare for winter; she stops laying eggs.

The drones are killed out of the hive at the beginning of fall because they are taking food the worker bees need.

Bee population begins to dwindle.

Workers form a ball around the queen to keep her warm through winter. Workers will fly at least five miles away to find nectar, pollen, and water during the feeding season. The bee’s life cycle doubles because they are not working themselves to death, meaning a longer life than the average worker.

Honey soap is highly sought after by repeat customers.

The Ballengers quickly learned how complex a bee hive can be. A brood box has 10 frames and the honey supers have 9 or 10 frames. The bottom section of a hive is the brood box or the bee’s territory. Typically in the Midwest, you use two brood boxes in order for the bees to store enough honey for the full winter. The queen lives there and raises brood (baby bees) and honey is stored to survive winter. On top of each brood box is the super where honey is stored for human consumption.

“We try never to take the entire hive apart to avoid disturbing or killing bees,” Ballenger says. “Some get crushed when the hive is reassembled. We only enter a hive when there is a need. For example, we look for the problem when a bee population seems to be low in a hive. We make sure their winter stores are adequate to survive the cold months. We take the hive apart, look at the frames to make sure there is plenty of packed honey and pollen for their winter food source. Hive starvation is the number one reason for losing bees over the winter.

We feed our bees sugar water in the fall to make sure they produce enough additional honey for winter stores.”

“We only remove honey from a hive once per year,” Joyce Ballenger says. “We take the super frames out of each box to harvest the honey. To begin, we scrape with a tool that takes the first seal of wax off. Then we put the frame in an extractive spinner which uses centrifugal force to separate the honey that flows through a screened filter, from the wax. This creates our delicious, pure honey that we filter a second time to remove any remaining wax. Next, we store it in jugs in a cool root cellar with no heating or pasteurizing. It is poured into jars as needed for the consumer. We don’t use additives and that is a concern of grocery store honey. About 80 CONTINUED >

Honey soap has gained popularity with the Bee Haven Farm’s customers. Joyce takes four different kinds of oils and bees wax, and then heats her mix for 20 minutes to reach a certain temperature with the right consistency. She adds fragrances and pours it into as mold that sits for 24 hours. The longer it 34

dries, longer this soap will last. Her soap is completely natural with two ounces of wax, lye as a cleaning agent and add 49% oils to create a great moisturizer. Joyce adds color and a variety of scents to her soap like oatmeal and coffee.

Honey sticks are another big attraction for the Bee Haven Farm’s honey stand in Liberty’s Farmer’s Market. The Ballenger’s originally didn’t intend for this to be a big draw, they simply wanted more items to sell. Now kids seek out their stand and the adults follow.

Bee keeping is an ancient art full of sweet rewards. But getting started requires some guidance.

“If you want to be a bee keeper, start by joining a bee-keeping association,” Barry says. “I went to monthly meetings for a year and learned a lot from presentations and by talking with members. They offer one-day training on how to be a bee keeper, a class I found invaluable.

arching band is not just for under the Friday night lights, or Saturday competitions. Four Park Hill High School graduates have spent their summer touring with the Troopers Band Corp, a competitive World Class drum and bugle corp founded in 1957. The corp’s season lasts from May to mid-August, with three to four shows a week, and traveling across 15-20 states performing. Shows are typically 11-13 minutes in length.

“Drum corps is obviously similar to marching music in school settings. Put simply, drum corps is marching music taken to a ridiculous extent. Rather than having rehearsal for band in school for a couple hours a day, drum corps move out onto the road and practice for twelve hours a day, seven days a week,” Graham Deckard, 2013 graduate of Park Hill High School, says.

Deckard is serving as the tour manager for the Troopers for their 2016 season and performed in the front ensemble from 2013-2015.

“My job consists of planning our tour and how we'll be able to make it around the country, from show to show. The corps sleeps and rehearses in schools all across the nation. It's my job to make sure that we are coordinating with these schools and shows, so the competitive season will

run smoothly. On top of that, I manage all daily scheduling of rehearsal and transportation for our fleet--four charter busses, two semi trailers, and two small vehicles with trailers,” Deckard says.

Caleb Fankhauser, a 2013 graduate of Park Hill High School, has been involved with the Trooper Band Corp since 2013. The group is capped at 150, but with those behind the scenes, the traveling entourage could get closer to 200. As the Drum Corp International only allows performers until they are 21, this will be Fankhauser’s last season. One of Fankhauser’s favorite memories with the troop happened recently.

“We're currently in Erie, Pennsylvania near Lake Erie. We convinced the staff to let us track to Lake Erie. People were all coming out and taking pictures and videos as we went by. Eventually, we got down to the lake and we took our drums off and spent some time on the beach area and in the water. The owner of a small bait and tackle shop nearby gave us all drinks because she was a fan. On the way back, we were approached by the staff of an adult special needs rehab center who asked if we could come by on our way back to the school we were staying at. So we stopped and played some of our show for them,” Fankhauser says.

The season wrapped up with the DCI World Championships August 11-15 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. They compete against other world class drum corps that have also been on tour.

“We are gifted with world class instructors and some of the best performers that you'll ever see. The level of achievement that these kids can accomplish is amazing. We take some of the most talented young adults from states all across the USA and even from other countries, entirely.

Currently, the Troopers have multiple members from Canada and Japan, as well as the United States. With people coming from such great distance to pour such immense hours into a common goal, it's truly amazing to see what can be accomplished. The commitment, dedication, and talent that they bring to the Troopers is what allows us to be such a fine and professional marching music ensemble,” Deckard says.

Patrick Revnew is taking over the Northland, one shave ice stand at a time.

T

he spark came when Patrick Revnew was a sophomore in high school.

He was waiting tables as a server at Wexford Place—his first job—and saving as much money as he could. He shared his idea, to open a shave ice stand, with is supervisor Jacob Gutierrez and then his parents. Together, they checked out locations in Parkville and Liberty.

Then things really started to roll: Revnew’s mother’s friend’s daughter was selling a shave ice truck. Gutierrez and Revnew 40

became partners. They hauled the truck to Revnew’s backyard, gutted the inside, and completely renovated the exterior. They found a new spot at Zona Rosa.

Opening day was May 29, 2015, the first day of the Italian Festival.

“We did incredibly well,” says Revnew. “I couldn’t believe how well we did. Still, we didn’t know if we’d be a success. We were really CONTINUED > focused on the one location.”

When summer ended, Revnew headed east to Columbia; he’s a business student at the University of Missouri.

“We realized there’s so much more to a shave ice business than just working the stand during the summer,” says Revnew. “We’ve learned about business licenses and food handling cards, sales tax and health permits. My friend’s mom is an accountant and she helped us understand taxes and other financial concerns.”

The work on Hawaiian Ice didn’t stop while Revnew was at school. In fact, it consumed all of his non-class time until Thanksgiving, when he came back home and looked at—and bought—a second stand.

“It was another gut job and believe it or not, it was even more work than the first one,” says Revnew.

They found a location at Burlington Creek and set opening day for May 15, which was delayed five days because of rain. Keeping with tradition, the original location, at Zona Rosa, opened for its second season on the opening day of Italian Fest.

“We focused more on branding this summer,” says Revnew. “We want to make it more of a brand, not just a business.”

Revnew says he enjoys the creative process of opening and operating a business.

“It’s hard work, but it’s fun. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. I don’t want to work for anyone else, and I’m always trying to learn, to grow. This isn’t just a summertime job for me and it’s not a way to earn a little pocket cash for school. It’s a business I want to grow.

Even when I was young, I was entrepreneurial. I had lemonade stands and I was always looking for a way to be my own boss.”

Revnew talks about family quite a bit: he says he couldn’t do it without the help of his dad and grandpa, who helped so much with remaking the inside of both stands. His brother, who is still in high school, is an investor in the company.

“We needed a new machine last summer and he’d saved money and wanted to invest,” says Revnew.

He also says family in California, who own and operate successful businesses, inspire him.

“I’ve watched them do it,” he says, “and I know I can make it on my own, too. I can do my own thing.”

Revnew isn’t stopping with two stands: he recently purchased a third building and is working to open in late spring of 2017. With that addition, Hawaiian Ice will be come the largest shave ice company in all of Kansas City.

“It’s taken a little over a year,” he says. “And we’re going to keep trying to grow.”

B

y the time many of you read this, I will be 38, 39, or 40 weeks pregnant. I'll be in a frantic rush to complete assignments so that I can have some time to devote just to my new daughter. I'll be washing and refolding impossibly tiny pairs of socks, onsesies and blankets. And my two dogs, Indiana Jones and Short Round will be wondering what on earth all the fuss is about.

For the last four years and nearly two years, respectively, I have been a work at home dog mom. Many people call their pets their 'fur kids' or their 'children' but for me, my two German Shepherd mixes have been more like coworkers and confidants. When I need to complain about a work frustration, they are there. They have slept through countless late night and early morning deadlines while I log hours in front of a glowing computer screen. In fact, they are both curled up around me right now as I make the race to deadline with this reflection.

And when I need to clear my head, they are always too eager to get leashed up and head to the dog park or walking trail. They don't do many tricks except for one--keeping me sane as I work alone.

But all that is about to change. I know it and they suspect it. As both of them have taken to licking my belly on occasion, I think

they know that something is up besides a new found cookies and cream ice cream addiction.

Just like they can smell an oncoming storm, they can feel a change coming. But this one will last a long, long time.

I am surrounded by dog owners and all of them love their dogs like family members.

Similarly, all of them that have children have told me how much life changes for their dogs when the human kids enter the picture. There's less time for snuggles, a game of catch or a long walk on a Saturday afternoon. And rightly so. Our instincts to engage with our children are there for a reason. At the same time, a part of my heart breaks when I think that my dogs will get less of my love and time. Because as much as they get from me, I get tenfold from them.

In fact, I think that they've given me some solid parenting training. My husband freely admits that he fears diaper duty less after years of picking up poop on walks, cleaning up accidents in the house or reaching into the jaws of death to snatch dead animals or other foreign objects from their gullets.

Shorty, in particular, has a penchant for catching birds or locusts and then 'playing' with them. And similarly, late night feedings can't be so very different than waking up to Shorty barking at phantoms in the

wee hours of the morning, right? We've already started playing the 'baby toy or dog toy game' with some amusing results. (Hint, they are very very similar!)

But when I get weepy thinking about the lost time with my pups, (and I do, frequently) I can look forward to the joy that they will give and receive to and from my daughter. Sure, the first year or so will be a little boring but my dogs love kids. When I call my five-year-old niece over Skype, her first question is not, 'How are you?" but "Where's Indy and Shorty? Can I see them?"

Her sister, likewise, took to licking Indy back when Indy licked her as a 9-month old.

They thought that both of the dogs where simply the best thing since sliced bread.

And so I'm assuaging my guilt for this first year of sleepless nights and less walks and love that may be grouped together more instead of spread throughout the day and looking forward to when my daughter will grow up with the two best dogs a girl could ask for, something that I begged for as a child and never received. And yes, I am determined that my pets will still have plenty of love and care and priority but I know that at the end of the day, I'm only human and humans fail. Not all of us can be as steadfast as a dog. If only we could.
