Here’s to You in 2024 For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectations that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Northlake City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term, but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. This month, we'd like everyone to still feel the warmth of the holiday season with an emphasis on you. As you read this issue, we hope that you find ways to enrich your lives, whether that's a spa day or starting off 2024 with an appointment to revamp your finances, giving yourself space to put yourself first. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health, it's not what you do some days that move the needle, it's what you do MOST days. For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails every night for dinner isn't best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It's not the sometimes choices we make, it's the most-of-the-time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest during your work week. “Adjustments can be very beneficial during those milestones to allow the body to easily move and learn the new movements.” Dr. Rachel Moore knows from personal experience how helpful chiropractic care can be. Beginning around age 10, Moore suffered from migraines. It wasn’t until she sought chiropractic care at 17 for neck pain that she found relief. “After going to see the chiropractor, a few months later I realized that I had not had a headache,” she said. “For someone who had a headache three or four days a week and carried aspirin with them everywhere, that was a huge revelation.” Moore later faced other challenges, such as infertility and trouble breastfeeding, where chiropractic care proved helpful. These experiences put her on the path to not only helping others find pain relief but helping the body function well. Moore especially enjoys working with children and women journeying through infertility, pregnancy and postpartum care. “My passion comes from not only being educated about it, but I have been there personally,” she said. “I hope through what I've learned, I can help moms avoid going through those struggles. “I love the difference that can be made in a pregnancy with a couple of adjustments. One of the most important things about chiropractic care during pregnancy is that it's not just about pain … it's about function. I'm

Then I work postpartum making sure the body is back where it should be after having a baby.” Moore specializes in many issues for babies, starting with newborns struggling with tension and tightness, trouble breastfeeding, colic, constipation and acid reflux. She also works with babies as their bodies grow, hitting milestones like rolling over, crawling and walking. "Adjustments can be very beneficial during those milestones to allow the body to easily move and learn the new movements,” Moore explained. “I've seen kiddos come in who have reverted from walking back to crawling because of a misalignment. “Kids are rough and they tumble and climb, which leads to the body being misaligned. I work with a lot of kids who play sports … they come in because of an injury or their body isn’t functioning like it should. As a child, Dr. Nicole Tod enjoyed meeting her doctors and attending appointments. She discovered she wanted to become a physician, and helping patients through some of their biggest life adjustments, such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause, became her calling. “I really enjoy educating women on those different stages and helping them navigate these big changes,” Dr. Tod said. “We really don’t see or talk much about some of these stages, like menopause or the not-so-great things about pregnancy, and I like helping women and making them feel empowered during these times.”

For Dr. Tod, ensuring women have access to accurate information is important. She encourages patients to have a trustworthy relationship with a primary care physician when potentially serious issues arise. “First, having a primary care physician is crucial and I encourage patients to establish care when things are going well, not just when things are not going well,” she said. “Second, because there's a lot of false information out there, it's important to search for sources of high-quality information." Dr. Tod says to seek reliable sources since there is so much untrue information being passed off as medical fact. Should a patient want another opinion, she encourages them to do their research. "Each medical specialty has a society that provides recommendations and practice guidelines," explained Dr. Tod.

"Some examples are the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians. You can look up any specialty's society website and there are patient-specific sections where you can find good resources of medical information." As for other information on the internet, she recommends proceeding with caution and consulting with trusted doctors. “You can find medical information on internet sites and social media, but I recommend evaluating that information critically," said Dr. Tod. Michelle Fitzhugh has enjoyed helping people throughout her life, which prompted her to become a counselor

For most of her life, Michelle Fitzhugh has been passionate about being a safe place for people as they walk through joyous and difficult seasons of life. This led her to becoming a counselor and opening Redeemed Life Counseling Group. “My goal, my heart and my passion with Redeemed Life is for it to be a place for the hurting, the traumatized, the sad, or anxious, whoever it is - couples, individuals or families - to come and have their needs met in the areas of mental health and emotional growth,” she shared. “We want to offer all that in their own town and in this space that's easy for them to access.” Fitzhugh and her team use progressive approaches and stay on the cutting edge of advancements in mental health to best benefit her clients with a custom treatment plan. “It’s so important to understand that there are now mental health tools that didn't even exist, or certainly weren’t talked about or widely known 10 years ago, that can give people freedom in the areas of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and general trauma they've experienced in their life,” explained Fitzhugh. The Redeemed Life team continuously works to integrate neuroscience techniques into therapies. Neurofeedback, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Brain Spotting are just a few techniques currently utilized by counselors in conjunction with other therapeutic elements best suited to each client. These therapies use focused techniques to retrain the brain to function more effectively and in more appropriate patterns, which facilitates healing. Clients can work through trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral and sleep disorders, headaches, seizures, cerebral palsy, and conditions on the autism spectrum.

“The goal is having full body healing with people working from the inside out and from the bottom or lower brain to the top … those parts of us that are unconscious or subconscious and hurt to the things that are conscious,” said Fitzhugh. “We know through research that it is the best way for people to get complete healing.” Another therapy, Mental Health Massage, provides a safe place for appropriate physical touch to help the body relax, release stress and tension, and suppress stress hormones while releasing good hormones such as oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin. These therapeutic massages can benefit anyone, especially those struggling with infertility, postpartum depression or anxiety, terminal illness or other difficult life situations. Redeemed Life has fully equipped play therapy rooms and certified play therapists, provides FDA-approved ADHD screenings and assessments, and has therapists trained to work with a new ketamine-assisted therapy for another area of healing for the brain. By serving children and adults with customized therapy plans, Redeemed Life therapists strive to create a relaxed, welcoming environment for everyone. “One thing I hear consistently from people who come into our office is that they love the way it feels, that they feel welcome and safe here,” said Fitzhugh. “We are a faith-based counseling center in the sense that our therapists share like-spiritual beliefs.
