Dear Readers,

We're living in an era fixated on efficiency and productivity, and I'll be the first to admit I often get caught up in that mindset, too. It's easy to fall into the trap of believing that only activities with a clear calculation of time, effort, and payoff are worthwhile. We gravitate toward the familiar, seeking control and avoiding uncertainty.

But I've come to realize that this approach can sometimes leave life feeling lacking and unfulfilling. We need to make space for spontaneity, for venturing into the unknown, for embracing the uncertainty that comes with trying new things. In those unstructured moments, connections flourish, friendships blossom, and trust deepens.

Making time for my family and friends has been a top priority for me. Consistently investing in these relationships is crucial for seeing significant and lasting positive change.

I encourage you to make room for exploration in your own life. Break free from the routine, lose yourself in a new hobby or destination, and prioritize what truly matters. It's these moments of exploration and connection that make life truly meaningful.

Warm Regards,

ANTHONY

A Culinary ADVENTURE

EXPLORING NEW FOODS AT RAMSEY FARMERS’ MARKET

ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS

The Ramsey Farmers' Market

AAs the summer sun warms up the streets of Ramsey, one Sunday tradition stands out among the rest—the Ramsey Farmers’ Market. Nestled in the heart of town at the historic Ramsey train station, this vibrant farmers’ market has been a beloved fixture for locals and visitors alike for the past 15 years.

Nancy Boone, the driving force behind the non-profit market explains the history and culinary delights that await visitors this summer. She shares, “In my mind,

back in the day when I worked at Ramapo College, after a trip up to a market in Warwick, New York, I thought I’d like to have a market here in Ramsey,” Nancy reminisces. “So having no experience, I went to the town and made a simple proposal, and they said go with it.”

What started as an endeavor with just 12 to 14 vendors has blossomed into a bustling marketplace boasting over 55 vendors on any given Sunday. Nancy attributes this growth to the unwavering support of the town of Ramsey and the Ramsey Historical Association, of which she was once president.

“We are sponsored by the Ramsey Historical Society and very robustly supported by the town, providing police, crossing guards, and such from the DPW,” Nancy explains.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Ramsey Farmers’ Market persevered, adapting to outdoor operations and ultimately transitioning to a full-time yearround market. “People seem to like it. I mean, there were a lot of things that had to be compliant to remain open during the pandemic, counting people and caution tape around the entire market, and adequate spacing, but we made it work,”Nancy shares.

Berry Season!

What sets the Ramsey Farmers’ Market apart is its diverse array of vendors, offering everything from certified organic produce to international delicacies. As per Nancy, “We have vegan options, certified organic, sustainably grown, gluten-free, non-GMO—My big thing is that small businesses need support.”

The market is a melting pot of cultures, offering visitors the opportunity to explore global cuisines right in their own backyard. From Tibetan steamed dumplings to Mexican salsa made from a grandmother’s recipe, there’s something to please every palate.

“We have high-quality items to offer,” Nancy shares. But the Ramsey Farmers’ Market isn’t just about food—it’s a community hub where families gather, children learn, and friendships flourish.

“During the summer months, one of our volunteers does a children’s craft every other week. We’ll have scavenger hunts, music and family-friendly events,” Nancy shares.

The market’s impact extends beyond its parking lot, with proceeds going back into the community to support local organizations and initiatives.

“We’ve given back probably over a quarter of a million dollars to the local organizations, supporting emergency services, the library, and various non-profit charitable institutions over the past 15 years,” Nancy reveals.

Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or simply looking to explore new flavors, there’s no better place to indulge your senses and support local businesses than this charming Farmers’ market in the heart of Ramsey.

SUMMER WELLNESS

FINDING YOUR PERFECT YOGA PRACTICE

Summer is the perfect time to embark on a journey of self-discovery and wellness. And what better way to do that than through the practice of yoga? But with the multitude of yoga studios and practices available, how do you find the one that’s just right for you? Chaya Spencer, owner of Shree Yoga in Saddle River, shares some tips into the art of exploring yoga and finding your perfect practice.

UNDERSTANDING THE LANDSCAPE OF YOGA

Chaya begins by highlighting the importance of finding the right yoga practice tailored to individual needs. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach,” she emphasizes. With the variety of yoga styles available, from Hatha to Vinyasa, Restorative to Chair Yoga, the options can seem overwhelming. However, each

style offers a unique approach to the ancient practice, catering to different preferences and requirements.

Chaya’s own journey into yoga began in an ashram in India during her teenage years, where she practiced under a hot tin roof in an open-air pavilion—a far cry from the serene studios of today. Yet, through the evolution of yoga in the West, there is now a diverse array of practices in the area.

Chair Yoga

FINDING YOUR FIT

So how does one navigate this sea of yoga styles to find the perfect match? “Go try a bunch of different studios,” Chaya suggests. “See what they have to offer and what feels right for you.” Many studios offer introductory offers, allowing newcomers to sample classes and gauge compatibility, as many studios don’t require ‘commitment’.

But it’s not just about the style of yoga; it’s also about finding the right teacher— one who resonates with your needs and understands your limitations. “Especially if

“GO TRY A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT STUDIOS.” -CHAYA SPENCER

you have any physical considerations,” Chaya emphasizes, “find a teacher who is experienced in working with those issues.” Whether it’s chronic pain, joint issues, or recovering from an injury, a skilled instructor can provide modifications and guidance tailored to individual needs.

MAINTAINING WELLNESS ON THE GO

As the summer months call your name with promises of travel and adventure, maintaining wellness becomes a necessity,

even on the road. Chaya shares some simple yet effective yoga stretches to alleviate the discomfort of long journeys, from side bends to standing cat/cow stretches. Incorporating these movements into your travel routine can help combat the toll of extended periods of sitting and keep your body feeling refreshed and revitalized.

WHAT SETS SHREE YOGA APART

At Shree Yoga, the emphasis is not just on the physical practice but on fostering a sense of community and belonging. As a small boutique studio, they prioritize personal connections, greeting each student by name and working with individual needs. With a focus on both rigorous and gentle practices, including chair yoga, yoga for osteoporosis, and restorative sessions, Shree Yoga provides a nurturing space for those seeking healing and rejuvenation.

In essence, finding the right yoga practice is about more than just striking a pose; it’s about forging a deeper connection with oneself and the world around us. So this summer, take the plunge, explore the vast landscape of yoga, and discover the practice that speaks to your soul. Your journey to wellness awaits, one downward dog at a time.

Saddle BAYOU OF RIVER

Tanja Israel

“I organize different things every month. I will try to add something unusual.”

Where Crafting Dreams Take Flight

Tucked away in Saddle River, lies a hidden gem that’s more than just a craft and gift store—it’s a haven for creativity and connection. Bayou of Saddle River Craft and Gift store comes from the creative vision of Tanja Israel.

Tanja’s philosophy at Bayou is all about keeping things fresh and exciting. “I organize different things every month. I will try to add something unusual.” she explains. From oil painting to workshops for kids, sewing, crochet, and even butterfly classes, woodwork for kids and adults. Bayou offers a variety of activities to spark creativity and joy.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PERRY QUARANTA, CARLY MAC MANUS

But what sets Bayou apart is its welcoming atmosphere. Tanja emphasizes, “It’s very improvised also. So, you know, when people call me at the last minute to do a birthday party, I do it.” Flexibility and spontaneity are the name of the game at Bayou, ensuring that every visit is filled with surprises and delight.

This summer Tanja is gearing up for a season of sunshine and crafting galore. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a newbie looking to dip your toes into the world of DIY, Bayou has something for everyone.

But beyond the crafts, Bayou is a place where connections are forged and stories are shared. Tanja reflects on the importance of bringing people together, “For me, the most important reason for being here is that I think that people have lost connection.” Through crafting and conversation, Bayou cultivates a sense of community where everyone is welcomed with open arms.

As Tanja puts it, “When you’re sitting together and crocheting, you get very lively conversations and you hear how different people’s upbringings were and how much fun that is actually.” Bayou isn’t just a store—it’s a space where differences are celebrated, and everyone is encouraged to be their authentic selves.

Yet, beyond the realm of crafts, Bayou blossoms into a vibrant hub of camaraderie and storytelling. Tanja’s unwavering belief in the power of human connection fuels Bayou’s mission to foster a sense of belonging and acceptance. Within its walls, strangers become friends, sharing laughter and memories amidst the hum of creativity.

Tanja shares, “I chose this name because Bayou, because in southern dialect, it sounds like ‘by you’. A bayou is a slow moving river through wetlands and I would like the river to move slow, since our historic area is prone to flooding. I also would like people to slow down and enjoy quality time. When you do ‘slow shopping’ and especially crafting, that can be very meditative and calming.” For Tanja, Bayou represents more than just a store—it’s a testament to the beauty of human diversity and the joy of creation.

As Bayou Craft and Gift store continues to flourish, Tanja remains steadfast in her commitment to nurturing creativity, fostering connections, and celebrating community. Whether you’re seeking inspiration or simply craving a moment of respite, Bayou of Saddle River welcomes you with open arms, promising an experience as unique and vibrant as the individuals who grace its doors. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a curious newcomer, consider stopping into the Bayou of Saddle River. Who knows what wonders you’ll discover?
