s June arrives, we realize we’ve nearly made it through half the year—and wonder how that could be possible! It feels like just yesterday we were writing about New Year’s resolutions and Valentine’s Day gifts. Now, we’re planning for summer—long days and warm nights, grilling, pools and everything else the year’s middle months bring along.

Before we get to that, though, we need to take some time to show off some important people in our lives. Our May issue was all about the influential women in North Scottsdale, so, this month, it’s only fitting that our June issue of North Scottsdale Lifestyle is dedicated to the dudes.

For starters, if you’re a dad, you get a full day that’s completely dedicated to you. Kick up your feet, grab a cold drink and enjoy being the center of attention on June 18.

If you’re not a dad, don’t worry—there’s still a lot you can enjoy. Grab a dozen (or two) on June 2 for National Doughnut Day—just don’t forget to hit the gym afterward. Cast a line on June 18 for Go Fishing Day, and clear out your phone’s camera roll for National Selfie Day (everyone’s still all about that, right?) on June 21. At the end of the day, the responsibility falls on my shoulders so by meeting daily with my team we are able to stay in front of the needs of our clients.

Simply being proactive and not reactive creates a winning strategy.

3. How are you able to consistently meet and exceed a client’s expectations?

There is no substitute for communication. Being transparent about the process from the beginning allows me to manage expectations from start to end. The truth is that selling a home is one of the biggest decisions someone can make, and by working with someone who has performed thousands of transactions in every type of market gives my clients peace of mind knowing there is nothing I haven't seen or dealt with. 1. How do you manage the demands for rapid growth?

This is a topic we discuss on a regular basis. We have grown to over a $1.4 billion dollar bank in just 10 years. We started as one location in Fort Myers, Florida, and have now grown to 11 locations throughout South Florida, Charleston, South Carolina, and our two locations here in Scottsdale. It is critically important we maintain our culture of building deep relationships and always going above and beyond for our clients. To ensure this happens when we enter a new market, it is imperative we have the right people in place who understand our culture and entrepreneurial spirit. We make sure we have the people before we open our doors. Many financial institutions will grow and open in new markets based solely on demographics, population base, etc. and then figure out after the fact who to hire. That is not our model.

2. What is the secret to building a high-performing team?

Again, it is finding the right people who fit our bank’s culture. One thing that differentiates our bank from many is that our employees are given a great amount of autonomy in each respective market and even down to each respective office location. We want to be able to make decisions quickly for our clients and not rely on layers of management or decision-makers at other locations who don’t know our clients at the local level. We look to hire people who are committed to making a positive impact on people’s lives and “doing the right thing” for our clients, and, if we do that, the rest will fall into place.

3. What is the key to anticipating a client’s needs?

Knowing our clients! It sounds cliché, but many financial institutions out there don’t really know their clients. We strive to build deep personal relationships with our clients. Many times our client’s needs are not even financial-related. I like it when one of my clients asks me for a referral to a doctor, perhaps a contractor for home improvements or some other “non-banking question.” It is not uncommon at all for our clients to call us up and ask questions like “Who should I call to fix my air conditioner?” or “Who would be a good pet-sitting service while we are out of town?” When our clients call us for things like this, we know we have earned their trust. The only way we can gain trust like this is to really get to know our clients deeply, spending quality time with them, asking questions and building deep relationships.

Finding and holding onto the people who share your values.

We have a whole list of values we have developed as a team and that we are committed to. Actions speak louder than words, and so I just watch and determine who walks the walk. I don’t have patience for those that like to coast along. My team is comprised of people who want nothing more than success and giving their best every day on every task. You can never be satisfied as there are always ways to improve, grow and learn. Every day still feels like the first day on the job to me.

1. What is the secret to maintaining a proper work/life balance?

I think the entire idea of work/life balance, if you’re an entrepreneur, is a bit of a misnomer. We all want it, but at the end of the day will fall short just because of the demands of the world we live in today. Personally, it has helped me thinking of it more as work/life integration. This approach has helped tremendously and has helped me utilize the moments with my wife, kids and friends, yet not feeling guilty if I have to take a phone call, work email in the evenings, etc. I may make up that time later. I also feel that, due to the demands of the day, an early start is an absolute. For me, I must to go to the gym and get a positive head start to the day.

2. How do you stand out in a crowded industry?

First and foremost, if you don’t love the work, your team members and the families you serve, it will be very difficult to stand out. After that, hard work, perseverance and continuously tweaking processes to keep up with changing times. Be available to your clients and become an expert in your industry. Putting clients’ needs first will always win in the long run. Know that success today doesn’t necessarily mean success tomorrow, so stay humble, align yourself with other like-minded individuals and continue to grow personally as you grow your business.

With its cozy, small-town vibe, a visit to Sticks Cigar Lounge feels more like hanging out at a local bar or pub than being at a cigar shop. A gathering place for cigar aficionados from Carefree and Cave Creek, Sticks is somewhere both residents and tourists alike can go to meet, talk and become friends, all while enjoying some of the finest cigars in the Valley. Although owner Larry Foppe bought Sticks with the intent of having a friend run the shop, circumstances changed, and his affinity for cigars led him eventually to take charge of the business.

“Cigars are much like wine, the you learn, the more you want to learn,” Foppe says. “Today, cigars are made all over the world, and the filler and the wrapper can make or break a cigar, much like the grape can make or break a fine wine.”

While Foppe personally prefers a medium-bodied cigar, like most of the customers that come to Sticks, the shop carries a plethora of premium cigars from around the world, including Byron, Padron, Davidoff, Ashton Liga and Cigar Aficionado’s “Cigar of the Year” La Flor Dominica’s Andulian Bull.

Foppe’s advice on how to enjoy the perfect smoke? “It all begins with the proper selection—ring size matters! The larger the ring size allows for a smoother draw.”

Established in 1974, Stag Tobacconist is one of the Valley’s oldest, family-run tobacco shops. Inheriting his father’s passion for cigars, current owner Rick Hopkins started selling cigars at age 17 and has been at it ever since.

As a traditional tobacconist, selling pipes and tobacco in addition to cigars, Stag Tobacconist has had long-term relationships with most major cigar companies, resulting in them carrying Arizona’s first Arturo Fuente and Padron cigars. Although they carry many brands of fine cigars, like Fuente Fuente Opus X and HR Cigars, their most prized is the 1995 Partagas 150th anniversary cigar, which sold out nationally in a month. However, the original owner of the brand was able to save some for his personal use, and, last summer, Hopkins had the honor of acquiring a few from that private stock.

“The cigar was originally made with an 18-year-old wrapper, so the wrapper tobacco is now 42 years old,” Hopkins says. “It is probably the smoothest cigar I have ever smoked.”

Although he personally prefers to pair a naturally sweet cigar with a nonalcoholic beverage like a soda, Hopkins offers this advice for how to best smoke a cigar, “Just make sure you have time to relax and enjoy it.”

A love for cigars runs deep in the veins of Cedar Room Fine Cigars & Lounge owner Andy Sweis. A 12-year veteran of the cigar industry, he has continued a long history of the family trade, which his father started after spending more than 30 years in the liquor and tobacco retail business. Having had his first experience smoking a cigar with his father and friends in his local cigar boutique, Sweis was automatically enthralled with them.

“What makes us passionate about cigars is not only enjoying the fine tobaccos from around the world but who they are enjoyed with,” he says.

Don’t expect to find an ordinary cigar lounge at Cedar Room, either. Cozy leather chairs and deep sofas in conversational groups adorn the inside while traversing doors lead to a covered outdoor patio with a large fire pit. Then there’s the company’s most prized feature.

“The core—the reason behind the name—is the Cedar Room, a beautiful sealed glass vault lined with Spanish custom cabinetry, where 800 types of premium cigars are kept," Sweis says.

Although Cedar Room offers a large selection of the finest premium cigars, Sweis does have his favorites.

“There is one cigar made by La Palina called Mr. Sam, which we pride because our father’s name was Sam, and he is beloved by many people in the Valley due to his genuineness, kindness, knowledge of cigars and excellent customer service.”

Located on the southwest corner of North Scottsdale Road and the Carefree Highway, this is the third restaurant for the Keeler Hospitality Group. The first, Spencer’s for Steaks and Chops, is a popular steakhouse in Omaha, Nebraska and the second, Market Street Kitchen, is just down Pima Road at D.C. Ranch.

Owner Paul Keeler has been in the hospitality industry for a number of years and definitely took good notes on what it takes to have a successful establishment.

“We don’t want to be mediocre; we want to strive to be the best,” Keeler says.

Keeler and his son, Matt, director of operations, have included all the key ingredients to create an atmosphere that serves delicious food and a wide selection of spirits.

They have created a venue that accommodates friends for lunch, guys meeting to watch a game, a happy hour gathering after work or family and friends coming in for a bite.

Only open a few months, Keeler and his landlord, Whitestone REIT, have successfully collaborated on two restaurants now. Hopefully, there are more to come!

Executive chef Michael Hunn, from Market Street, and chef de cuisine Dan Watts, who was transplanted from Spencer’s, have created some wonderful American comfort foods with a Southwest flair and sprinkles of Boston favorites, in honor of Keeler’s roots. Watts also is the pitmaster overseeing the operations of the custom-made 500-gallon Camelback Smoker that uses both oak and pecan wood. The smoker is in full view, off the secluded west patio.

The lunch and dinner menus offer up many wonderful choices. For the Easterners there is New England clam chowder, Boston baked beans and authentic lobster rolls 28

served on buttered split rolls. If you are a seafood lover, the lobster rolls are a must. And, every man will want to belly up to the bar or table and enjoy some mouthwatering entrees. Selections from the smoker include Texas brisket, which cooks for eight-plus hours and rests another eight; Carolina pork shoulder served with Carolina barbecue sauce that’s mild to complement the meat and not mask the flavor; and a slab of St. Louis spare ribs. Each dish comes with a choice of two side selections: honey butter cornbread, coleslaw, house salad, macaroni and cheese, Boston baked beans, sweet potato fries or barbecue-dusted house chips. Also from the smoker are the honey nut squash “ribs” with a barbecue seasoning rub.

I recommend the Tavern BBQ Platter that comes with Texas brisket, Carolina pork shoulder and St. Louis spare ribs. I thoroughly enjoyed these and haven’t stopped talking about how tender, moist and delicious they were. It is definitely enough to share, and it will be difficult to decide which you enjoyed more.

The lunch menu selections also include a variety of sandwiches, burgers, soups and salads. Shareables include fish tacos, pulled pork tacos, green chili pork stew, firecracker shrimp, smoked chicken wings and drunken PEI mussels. For dinner, entrée selections include seafood dishes, plus chicken, meatloaf, pork chops, short ribs, filet, New York strip and pasta primavera. If you have room left for desserts, you won’t want to pass up their signature dessert, Pati’s rum cake. Other desserts include rye bread pudding, double chocolate cake, apple crumble cheesecake and assorted gelato flavors.

Your children will love the $6 Lil’ Kids menu with choices of buttered noodles with parmesan cheese, big kid cheeseburger with fries, a grilled cheese sandwich with fries and chicken tenders with ranch dressing and fries.

Liberty Station definitely is a fun neighborhood social house for any occasion. There’s a number of enticing upscale craft cocktails, local craft beers and an assortment of popular wines, that round off the bar selections and add to your dining enjoyment.

magine for a moment returning from a long trip. You haven’t worried about your luxury home because you live in a lock-and-leave community. While waiting on the tarmac, you fire up your hot tub with a touch of a button on your phone. On the way to your Ferrari, you decide it’s warmer out than expected. You grab your phone again to lower your home’s air conditioning, flick on a few lights and turn on your favorite sports channel. In this fantasy, your favorite team is playing. When you arrive, you opt for the one-car garage instead of two.

Then you and your Ferrari descend into a glass showcase located in the basement.

The wet bar sure looks inviting right now.

Perhaps you should check out what’s available in the glass-exposed wine room. It was a long flight. Still daydreaming?

This man cave is a reality in the Village of Mountain Shadows model home, located in Paradise Valley. Four companies came together with a sole purpose: to showcase the best of what they do. Cullum Homes built it, Candelaria Design Associates designed it, IMI Interior Design decked it out and CCS Presentation Systems did the home automation.

“It is a very open floor plan with a bar in between the entertainment area and the car bar,” says Evelyn Jung, an associate at Candelaria. “One of the most important features is making sure a standard window well has enhanced elements, like water features and detailed designs. The idea is to create a man cave without necessarily feeling like it’s completely underground.”

While a car bar is a brilliant addition, it’s not mandatory for a proper den.

“I think every man cave focuses on uniqueness, quality entertaining space and making sure your friends and family are comfortable. We love hearing that our homeowners never want to leave their house because we designed it perfectly,” Jung says.

“It’s truly a joy designing our clients' homes and many people think we only do very large custom estates. We love doing remodels, additions, basically anything to inspire people to live in their dream home.”

BEAUTY AND BRAINS “It’s an undercover luxury home because you’d never guess from the outside that there’s a car in a showcase in the basement,” Travis Ferger, general manager of CCS HOME, says. “Although the home is about 7,500 square feet, from the outside it looks like your average 3,000-square-foot home.

It represents a lock-and-leave lifestyle, very low maintenance and a small yard.”

CCS programs all the electronics in the house, including sound systems, lights, shades, security, locks, audio, video and water features, like pool pumps and thermostats, to be accessible from a phone app called Savant.

They use commercial-grade products and teach clients how to use them safely.

“One of the biggest changes in our industry is we aren’t audio video people anymore, we are becoming IT guys,” Ferger says. “The wi-fi

is the most important thing to any client and a huge focus of what we do.”

Ferger enjoys the personal settings feature of the Savant app. It can save several actions to be performed with a push of a single button. For example, a client might set up a “morning” button, so with one touch of the app the shades will rise, the television turns on and the coffee machine starts percolating.

“You can completely automate your home to help smooth out your daily routine without needing an audiovisual guy every time,” Ferger says.

If pushing buttons on the app is inconvenient, there’s always voice control. Just tell your house what to do.

DREAM COME TRUE You can either imagine the unique design features: the 123-inch projection screen, the huge audio system with theater and surround sound and Lutron lighting, or you can stop by and take the real thing for a test drive.

The home, built last year, serves as a meeting place for realtors and clients until it goes up for sale when the community is built out.

“We are always looking for practical and creative ways to design our homes and make them unique,” Jung says.

Also, you never know what treasure you might find in the man cave’s car bar. Today, there are two Ferraris and a custom chopper.

Occasionally, Barrett-Jackson displays a vehicle or two.

“Sometimes the cars are worth more than the house,” Ferger says.

G

rowing up, my dad frequently shared with my sister and me that he had essentially grown up without a dad, and therefore, didn’t have a role model to inform how he would father us. Yet, today, as the father of two young boys, I strive to be as great of a dad as my dad was to us. The truth is, my dad set the bar unbelievably high. Unlike him, I know exactly what it looks like to be a great dad because I had the best one.

Grady, 8, and Cody, 4, brighten our lives each and every day. My wife, Erica, and I are constantly in awe of their curiosity, thirst for fun and learning, athletic interests and obliviousness to time because they are totally in the moment. Even during the most difficult times with our boys, we couldn’t be prouder parents. They motivate us every day to be the best parents we can be. As a father, that means looking back at the incredible job my dad did and trying to pass some of it on to my sons.

My dad would do anything for me. To this very day, my dad will be completely selfless when it comes to my sister and me. There’s no favor or request we can ask of him that he wouldn’t try to make happen for us. I want my kids to know they can always count on me.

Show up and participate. My dad was at just about every one of my practices and games growing up, and, until I got older, always offered to be an assistant coach. I do my best to not only be there for my kid’s various activities but to join in. Some of my best times as a dad have been on the baseball field with Grady and his friends,

believing I was a kid again (and paying for it the next morning).

Both of my sons also attended SARRC’s inclusive preschool, so I’ve had the benefit of seeing them at work every day. Today, when other dads’ breaks during the workday are spent getting coffee, I can go hang out with Cody and his friends in his classroom.

Be personable. My dad valued people tremendously, especially friends of mine, who were personable and easy to talk to. I try to pass this on to our boys by ensuring they stop to say hello to people and letting them know how I proud I am when they are so engaging with others.

Have special father-son rituals. Whenever my mom had to travel for business, my dad brought sugary cereal into the house. When he made our lunches, he always wrote a note and slipped it into my lunch box. While I don’t do sugary cereals, when my wife is out of town I always leave a note in my kids’ lunch—and a small piece of candy. They look forward to this in the same way I did.

Spend time together as a family. Father-son time is great, but my dad also emphasized the importance of us spending time together as a family. That’s one of the reasons you’ll often find our family having dinner together at Los Dos Molinos or watching the D-backs at Chase Field.

Hopefully, I’ll become the model for Grady and Cody that my dad was for me. And they’ll be lucky if they enjoy being a father half as much as I enjoy being theirs.
