Fond Farewells & New Beginnings

S

pring has finally arrived, and all the tell-tale signs of it are clear: days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, flowers are starting to pop-up along the roadside and the promise of summer lingers in the air. For many, spring is a time of growth, renewal and new beginnings with the coming of a fresh, brighter season. Yet spring is also a time for fond farewells too, as we pack up our favorite winter sweaters and blankets and recall all the warm, cherished memories of the holidays spent with friends and family behind us.

This sentiment rings especially true to me this spring, as I will be saying a most fond farewell as the Editor of North Scottsdale Lifestyle Magazine. It has truly been such a pleasure and humbling experience being the Editor of this magazine and having the opportunity to serve my community through the stories that we bring forth every month. Our motto here at Lifestyle Publications has always been “Inspired by Community,” and it is you, our readers and residents, that have truly inspired me during my time here. I feel so fortunate to have been able to meet with so many incredible individuals, businesses and philanthropic organizations who have opened both their hearts and homes to share their passions and give me a glimpse as to why they are so devoted to each of their individual causes—it has been a truly life-changing experience.

ERIC LUOMA OF CACTUS FLOWER FLORISTS SHARES SOME E ASY STEPS FOR RECRE ATING HIS “ROADSIDIA” BOUQUE T ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID APEJI

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | April 2017

C

actus Flower imports blooms from around the world. But when Eric Luoma wants something that looks, feels and smells like Scottsdale, he keeps his eye peeled on the side of the road and creates a “Roadsidia bouquet. He has a good sense of humor, but also recognizes the value in slowing down to smell the creosote.

How-To 1. Forage for an assortment of greenery, such as creosote, which smells sweet like rain even when its dry. Other common desert plants such as sage, brittlebush, white flowers from a blooming yucca, senna and Mexican bird of paradise can be found alongside the road or in your yard. 2. Trim one-half inch off each stem and place the flowers and greenery in water as soon as possible. 3. Arrange your new flora in a vase or container at home and CONTINUED > combine with other fresh flowers.

Fun Flower Facts

AI R P U R I F I ER : It’s good to have live plants around your office and home to help filter toxins and air pollutants. Date, areca and bamboo palms are the best at removing toxins; there is nothing more natural to clean your air with. ED I B L E F LO WER S : Corn flower, marigolds and rose petals are edible flowers and used in salads at fine restaurants. T R EN D Y C AR NAT I O N S : The price of the carnation is almost the same as when Cactus Flower opened in 1972. It's often overlooked as a common flower, but it comes in a variety of surprising scents, shapes and colors. LO N G E ST L A ST I N G: Go tropical if you’re looking for a flower to last a couple of weeks. Cactus Flower flies in tropical stems all the way from Costa Rica and Thailand. PR I C E Y F LO WER S : The Phalaenopsis orchid is the most expensive flower purchased by Cactus Flower. It has a four-foot stem covered with blooms and costs $100. Lilly of the Valley is coveted by many brides, and costs between $50 to $75 a stem. The small, delicate flower is six to eight inches long and can usually only be purchased for two or three weeks during the winter. M O ST P O P U L AR : The rose is the most symbolic and requested flower. It comes in thousands of colors, fragrances and styles. “Roses remind some people of their childhood, while others associate them with romance or Valentine’s Day,” says Eric. “They are fragrant, beautiful and bring happiness to those who receive them.” 28

About Cactus Flower Florists

H O W PA S S I O N B LO O M E D I N TO A B US I N E S S Everyone has a flower story, but few compare to that of Eric Luoma. He’s been in the flower business since he was four years old, giving him a lifetime of colorful memories. His mother, Sharron, was passionate about flowers. In the 1970s, she opened a flower shop and became one of the first women entrepreneurs in Scottsdale. And although one may think she named her business after the beautiful blooms in the desert, she didn’t. Sharron named it after her favorite movie starring Goldie Hawn, Cactus Flower. Cactus Flower Florists has always been a family affair, and their current location is only 100 feet from where it all began. The torch was passed to Eric and his sister, Kristina Dyrr, in the mid 1990s, and their dad joined the team when he retired from Honeywell. However, the business has changed since the days when the Luoma children dressed up as Easter bunnies and elves to deliver flowers. Expanding to five retail stores in the Valley now allows them to share quality flowers and thoughtful gifts with people from across the country, but the important things remain the same. “Our family has been helping the community celebrate life’s milestones for 45 years,” says Eric. “We give people a place to go when they don’t know what to say or how to say it.” Find a store near you at CactusFlower.com and explore more options at FlowerShop.com.

n just five months, Bodega 13 has become the “go-to” destination for creative cuisine, tasteful decor and fun experiences. Newlyweds Larry and Emily Foppe brought their love of travel and delicious food to Scottsdale, opening a new restaurant that takes diners on a gastronomical journey around the world. Just browsing the menu will make one feel like they’re reading a travel brochure and leave them planning their next visit to try another item; or to enjoy the delightful experience of dining at the Chef ’s table, fire table, quaint bar, an intimate booth or on the patio with spectacular views of Pinnacle Peak. Larry, a successful entrepreneur, is no novice at being a restaurateur, which is evident in all the wonderful details that come together to create just the right atmosphere. “The ambiance is quiet, comfortable and allows our guests to enjoy their dining experience,” explains Larry. The tasteful décor becomes apparent when you enter through two beautiful, distressed doors with speakeasy windows. There’s the glass wine room

and a cozy bar. Plus, a charming fireplace—a replica of a design the Foppes saw while honeymooning in New Zealand. Proudly on display are also three gorgeous, 100-year-old barn doors from a barn in Iowa that lead into the private dining room. Emily, new to Arizona, adds quaint southern charm and a warm sense of hospitality to the dining experience, as she and Larry welcome each guest as if entering their own home.

TAPAS & MORE

The international menu at Bodega 13 has something for everyone—from small plates to full entrees—and does not disappoint. There’s a wide selection of cold and hot tapas, Old World Paellas and delicious entrees, and soups and salads for those looking for classic favorites. Executive Chef Nick Muller helms the kitchen. His passion for cooking started at age 12, having been raised in a German family that owned a café, CONTINUED > with a grandfather who made wine. April 2017 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

“I feel that the love of food and wine runs deep in my heritage and blood,” shares Chef Nick. “The true sense of love and togetherness was, and will always be, felt most around the dinner table.” Chef Nick has also studied under many talented chefs from around the world—including Germany, France, Italy the Middle East and South America— combining these cooking styles to create an international menu that allows guests to sample authentic cuisine without leaving Arizona. As Larry further explains, “Our international cuisine menu is a welcome break from traditional bar food.” I highly recommend the Around the World Sampler, which includes duck tacos, stuffed dates, shrimp and chorizo, and curry chicken. My first bite into the incredibly delicious stuffed dates had me hooked, and

I could clearly see why it’s such a popular item on the menu. Plus, the tacos and shrimp and curry chicken were amazing. Other tapas include lamb lollipops from the Caribbean, beef tenderloin from France, honey shrimp from Spain and seafood martini from England. Adding an element of surprise is the Tahitian Pearl, a decadent dessert the Foppes recreated, having first tasted it on a trip to Tahiti. It’s beautifully presented and a delicious ending to any meal. Also be sure to stop by on a Sunday morning for the wide selection of tasty brunch items, including the Bodega omelet, biscuits and gravy, crepe du jour, chicken and waffles, eggs benedict and spiced French toast. All who dine at Bodega 13 are sure to find it to be a unique and enjoyable experience that offers a plethora of tastes; beautifully prepared, around the world cuisine; and a wonderful selection of specialty cocktails, international wines and craft beers.

SOUTHWEST AUTISM RESEARCH & RESOURCE CENTER CELEBRATES ITS TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY

ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY CARL SCHULTZ

ast year, PBS called Phoenix “the most autism-friendly city in the world,” and a lot of that honor is due to the work of Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC), which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month. “In 2016, we provided more than 60,000 treatment hours to our clients, allowing nonverbal children to say their first words; schoolaged children to transition to the same classroom as their typical peers; and adults to secure and retain meaningful, competitive employment on a path to independence,” says Karen Scott, marketing and communications manager. She adds that SARRC has grown to become an internationally recognized organization dedicated to autism research, education, evidence-based treatment and community outreach. Scott also notes that the nonprofit offers a wide range of services for children, teens and adults — from early intervention to programs that help adults with autism live more independently. “New this year, we’re proud to offer diagnostic services to individuals of all ages, which is in response to the growing need for more qualified professionals who can accurately diagnose autism,” says Scott. 42

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | April 2017

April is also Autism Awareness Month and SARRC has many plans to spread the word, including a radio campaign with KTAR. “This month, SARRC is partnering with Bashas’ and Food City stores statewide,” says Scott. “Customers have a chance to make a donation at checkout that will go directly back to SARRC’s services and programs.” Another major highlight is their annual Community Breakfast, which takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, April 28 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. This year’s theme is “rEVOLUTION.” “At this year’s breakfast, we’ll be showcasing the revolution and evolution of SARRC over the last 20 years,” says Scott. “We have some exciting highlights, including a special focus on some of the organization’s most revolutionary leaders over time. We’ll also be sharing updates on our latest research initiatives, innovative programs and services, and showcasing successes from the previous year.” For those who wish to support SARRC, Scott says that the organization is home to a variety of volunteer opportunities, too. To learn more about SARRC, please visit AutismCenter.org. The 2017 Community Breakfast is free and open to the public but registration is required by April 14.
