Memories of Home

A

lthough I’ve lived on the West Coast for almost 15 years now, I always look back at my childhood home in a small little Connecticut town with a sense of nostalgia. Maybe it’s because I spent my carefree years of youth there, or maybe it’s because I lived there the longest of any place so far. Either way, I will always consider that cheerful white house with its bright red door and shutters and large oak tree in the front yard my true home. This year, that sense of nostalgia came on full-force when I visited my father over the holidays and we decided to watch old home movies. As soon as that house flashed up on the screen, a flood of memories came washing over me. It seemed as if I could feel the flickering flames of the grand fireplace cast their hot glow on my face as I snuggled up on the couch; and could smell the aroma of pumpkin spice wafting through the kitchen as I helped my mom bake pie while the fall leaves fell outside. I couldn’t help but smile as I thought of all the memories that house held, and couldn’t help feel a little ache of longing once the videos were over. As I sat on the couch, deep in thought, my dad called me in to help him prepare Christmas dinner. We then spent the rest of the evening laughing and talking while making tons of Italian food and enjoying every last bite until our hearts, and stomachs, were content before sitting down to a Christmas movie marathon. A few weeks later, I was thinking about the time I spent with my father over Christmas, and much to my surprise, felt that same sense of nostalgia as I did when thinking about my childhood home. I then realized it’s not the place the makes the memories, but the people you are with and the cherished moments you spend with them; and that’s a lesson I will take with me no matter where I go. In the “Home Issue” of North Scottsdale Lifestyle, we take a look at some of the wonderful people and businesses dedicated to creating homes and spaces where these memories can be made, such as Arizona Paint Supply, Mountainscapers Landscaping and RedRover Living. Thank you for enriching our communities in such beautiful ways! Until Next Month,

INSPIRING INTERIORS REDROVER LIVING CREATES ONE-OF-A-KIND, PERSONALIZED SPACES ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON

R

obert Shields, COO and managing partner at RedRover Living, loves to encourage his interior design clients to look within themselves when it comes to designing their personal living spaces. “My advice to every client in creating their home is this: ‘Be yourself, everyone else is already taken,’ a quote from Oscar Wilde,’” he says. Originally from Ajo, Arizona, Shields started out as a classical pianist and was highly trained in both music and art. Still, inspired by a childhood friend that he now works with, he couldn’t resist delving into interior design, and has since built a notable career in the industry both in the U.S. and abroad. “My western background influenced much of my work, be it traditional or contemporary,” he says. “I have now returned to my Arizona roots to begin a partnership with my childhood friend, Barbara Hallum, and together we have started a new design business, based here in Scottsdale, called RedRover Living.” 18

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | March 2017

While he can expertly put together an entire home, Shields admits to having a personal fondness for designing powder rooms and bathrooms. “They [powder rooms and bathrooms] grant the opportunity to provide luxury, generosity and hospitality for your guests, as well as for yourself, in the most personal and intimate way,” he explains. “The math and puzzle side of my brain loves the challenge of fitting all of the components together perfectly. The material resources available are unbelievable right now, and the artful use of flowing water always delivers a sense of wonder.” With a passion for creating one-of-a-kind spaces, Shields is always willing to assist his clients in personalizing their interiors. “Personal touches in a space, such as family photographs, objet d'art, works of art etc., are essential in making a home,” he says. “I always encourage my clients to show me the things that they love and, if they desire, try and expand on them by helping to build a collection.”

QUARTERS

GENTLEMAN’S

Once a home’s interior is completed, Shields typically lets the design speak for itself. “I generally don't make major changes once I design a space until it's time to completely start over, as every element used has been carefully considered,” he says. With personalization in mind though, he does encourage his clients to change up the home’s artwork as desired, just to keep things fresh. “I'm passionate about art and love to rotate artwork throughout the year,” he says. “Not only does the change in art bring a new perspective to any room, it also provides one the opportunity to expand their collection.” To learn more about RedRover Living, visit RedRoverLiving.com.

A TOUR OF ROBERT SHIELDS’ STYLISH, MODERN DWELLING

The targeted lighting plan in these living spaces allows for elegant nighttime entertaining and brings focus to the art collection and design details. A warm palette of dark wood and bronze tones with sand colored walls enhances the color saturation in the artwork.

The custom-designed, forged iron art hanging system, iron and glass coffee table, leather and nail head accents, and “diamond back” pattern in the drapery trim add masculine western overtones to this sophisticated yet intimate conversation area. CONTINUED >

This very odd, L-shaped dining room presented a unique challenge when trying to comfortably seat eight for dinner. “I designed a large, kidney-shaped table to bridge the two areas into a single space that would accommodate eight fully upholstered chairs,” Shields says. The color palette is also consistent between the living and dining room spaces in order to expand the small rooms into a single, unified space.

“This restful bedroom takes me back to the elegant, smooth Palo Verde trees and golden Arizona sunbursts that are part of my heritage,” Shields notes. “I was raised with the largest Palo Verde tree ever recorded in my grandparents’ garden, which shaded a patio where I spent many lovely days growing up in Ajo.”

The en-suite bath is a synthesis of all of the elements, materials, colors and elegance of the entire home. “I love creating spa-like baths because it allows for the opportunity to create luxury in the most intimate and personal way,” Shields says.

BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

F

or 20 years, Kevin Davis worked in commercial glass. One day, while working on a bathroom project, a client asked Davis to build her a "barn door." Not knowing what creating a barn door entailed, he told the client that he would look into it. Intrigued, Davis went home to work up barn door sketches. He presented these sketches to the client and she loved them. Davis then went on to fashion his first barn door for her, which turned out to be a shining success. Soon after creating that first barn door, a friend got wind of what Davis had constructed and challenged him with a trickier project. The new door designer worked through different ideas in the back yard of his home and came up with a design that satisfied the client’s needs. Davis was quickly developing a knack for this barn door making gig. OFF AND RUNNING

At the suggestion of his pleased clients, Davis started Arizona Barn Doors, and the company has certainly brought a new style to the table. "Our doors are unique because of the experience as a whole. We offer a custom door that is built to specific standards. We do rustic doors. We do more modern doors. We do bathroom doors with a full length mirror on the inside. We do wood walls and are starting to do furniture, too. Basically, we do what our customers want," says Davis. Whether the barn doors are used to hide storage, close off an entryway, or create a cozy environment, the sliding addition adds character to a home. And the aesthetic appeal of these doors is found not just in the panel of the door. "Another unique thing about Arizona Barn Doors is our hardware. It’s always exposed. In other words, they are wide-open at the top and in full view. We use steel casters on every door and that look is very industrial/operational. Our customers love it," adds Davis.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Davis is not in this venture alone. He brought the whole crew along. His dad, a Vietnam veteran, runs the shop while his mom, a breast cancer survivor, handles the sanding and stain department. Davis takes care of the sales and his son helps out wherever he can. Together they work as a team to bring customers a great product. “Working with family is a challenge sometimes. I won’t lie,” adds Davis with a laugh. “We have our good times and our bad, but between all of us we can figure out anything. We have to rely on each other, and that was something that we had to learn. Now everyone has their responsibilities that contribute to the success of the company.” Arizona Barn Doors is currently taking new orders. To learn more about the company and view photos of the barn doors, visit ArizonaBarnDoors.com or their Facebook page. Landscape Lore

Mountainscapers Landscaping Creates Show-Stopping Outdoor Living Spaces ARTICLE ALISON STANTON

S

ean Andersen got his start in the landscaping business as an entrepreneurial 15-year-old, carrying his lawn mower behind him on his bicycle as he rode around Paradise Valley. After earning a degree in Engineering and Construction from Northern Arizona University, Andersen founded Mountainscapers Landscaping in 1994, in North Phoenix. Every day, Andersen and his crew work with Valley and Flagstaff homeowners to construct amazing, original outdoor spaces that are personalized to fulfill the needs of each client. “We create vibrant, integrated and beautiful spaces that are not only functional, but are also designed to improve our clients’ social, spiritual, physical and emotional well-being,” Andersen says, adding that he is truly driven by the desire to provide the best possible customer service. 24

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | March 2017

As part of this commitment to service, Andersen is constantly looking for innovative solutions and new technology to provide his clients with the highest quality products to make their yards look truly incredible. He even enjoys inventing new products that will help achieve these goals. Recently, Andersen was awarded a patent for his latest fountain technology and design. Called The Elemental Fountain, he installed one in his latest residential project, which involved completely transforming the unused outdoor space of a mid-century home. “The Elemental Fountain is mesmerizing,” Andersen says, adding that it is “a natural balance between water and gravity, and a marriage of two opposing forces: fire and water.” The massive water flow of 10,000 gallons per hour cascades in a continuous layer of water that looks like a curved sheet of glass encompassing the flame, only without ever extinguishing it.

“Programmable LED lighting causes the water to glow with color, and creates a range of ambiance possibilities, from calm and relaxing to vibrant and high-energy,” he says. In addition to installing The Elemental Fountain, Andersen and his team created an overall “Comfortable Contemporary” design aesthetic for the recent project. “We introduced steel as a contrasting element, along with an abundance of natural materials to create a welcoming, spectacular entrance,” he says, adding that the entryway is now flanked by large boulders punctuated with a custom-crafted gabion (steel wire/stone) mailbox. The front yard was graded to add multiple elevations, and the pathway to the home is now curved with an elevated bridge made of natural-looking, acid-stained concrete with saw cuts for added interest. The once unused area also includes 25 trees, boulders, lush greenery, succulents and flowering shrubs, which Andersen hand-selected to create a micro-climate that will help reduce the intense summer heat. The side of the yard is dedicated to an edible garden, with an artistically-crafted steel gate dividing front and back. A hand-crafted wood shade structure with steel brackets and trellis was added to cover the extended front patio, creating the perfect private retreat for “front porch visiting,” and a great sanctuary to enjoy the front yard within. The pool was also completely remodeled, with Andersen and his team scaling it down to a play pool size and resurfacing it with plaster. Andersen’s fountain technology was also used to create a unique pool fountain that encourages human interaction. One can stand in the middle of the fountain and be untouched by the water, except for the circumference. The rush of water creates a sound that energizes you, and the falling water on your shoulders is like a soft, relaxing massage. CONTINUED >

In addition, the backyard now features another custom shade structure complete with lighting and ceiling fans, which provide a comfortable place to relax and socialize with friends and family. While the plants, bridge and other hardscaping features all helped improve the appearance of the outdoor space, The Elemental Fountain is definitely the proverbial show stopper—or in this case, passerby stopper. “It engages the senses, and it will simultaneously revitalize and relax you,” he says. “From a practical purpose, it provides a dramatic anchor that creates and defines the space, provides movement, warmth, light, stirs curiosity, and leaves a lasting impression. Cars are always stopping in front of the house to stare in wonder.” For more information about Mountainscapers Landscaping, please visit Mountainscapers.com.

MARKET RESEARCH Local Real Estate Guru Andrew Bloom Offers His Opinion on the Local Market ARTICLE KORY KILMER

L

ots of people can claim to know real estate, but few can back it up like Andrew Bloom. A founding partner of BVO Luxury Group, Andrew has a list of accomplishments that includes the prestigious RE/MAX Lifetime Achievement, Circle of Legends, Hall of Fame and Chairman’s awards, and has sold over a half-a-billion dollars in real estate during his career. We could think of no one better to spend a few moments with to discuss the North Scottsdale housing market. REAL ESTATE IN THE VALLEY, AND NAMELY IN NORTH

SCOTTSDALE, HAS CERTAINLY BEEN ON ITS WAY BACK UP. DO YOU SEE THAT CONTINUING?

My assessment of the current housing market, and projection for the next 12-24 months, is that we have entered an era of extreme enthusiasm and growth, predominately in Arizona. Economic development is really fueling growth through the attraction of large companies with strong employment and high salaried employees. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS CONSIDERING

ENTERING THE MARKET, EITHER AS A BUYER OR A SELLER?

Depending on your goals, this is a great time to move up or down in the market. Large homes are selling well, and demand is being driven by proximity to the 101. Smaller homes are performing well too, as they are being consumed by visitors wanting a piece of our North Scottsdale lifestyle. 28

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | March 2017

NORTH SCOTTSDALE HAS A LITTLE BIT FOR EVERYONE. WHAT CAN A PROSPECTIVE HOMEBUYER EXPECT TO GET FOR THEIR MONEY?

I am currently representing the best properties in the best neighborhoods. For buyers looking to spend under $500,000 the condo market is performing well. Between $500,000-$1,000,000 we have many opportunities to choose from along the 101 corridor. Over $1,000,000 is primarily being absorbed on larger lots and more exclusive neighborhoods such as DC Ranch, Silverleaf, Troon and surrounding zip codes. We are also finding a lot of demand along the Cactus Corridor with the new Basis Scottsdale School and The MAYO research campus. WHAT KINDS OF PROPERTIES CAN STILL CREATE A BUZZ IN A HOT MARKET?

One of the most exciting properties we recently put under contract is a 5-acre, 10,0000 square foot home in The Peak. The home was owned by a celebrity athlete and sold to an investor. It will be valued at over $4 million after a $500K renovation. There are many opportunities that exist today where investors can profit from updating larger homes that are now 20 years old and in need of some improvements. New construction and remodels are both fueling the fire too!

or discriminating homeowners in the Paradise Valley and Scottsdale areas who pride themselves on being on top of the latest home fashion trends and never settling for anything but the very best, AZ Paint Supply has recently arrived on the scene to help with home painting and window covering needs. AZ Paint Supply is an official retail outlet for the Benjamin Moore line of paints, carrying a selection that includes over 3,600 color variations, as well as a variety of finishes and stains, enabling them to find the perfect solution for all their clients’ needs, including products that have a proven track record for durability, even under the scorching desert sun.

As the inventor of aluminum blinds in the 1940s, Hunter Douglas has always been at the forefront of its industry, and AZ Paint Supply is proud to carry their entire line of window coverings and treatments, too. With an industry shift toward motorization and whole-home automation, Hunter Douglas offers a wide variety of creative solutions for homeowners’ ever-changing needs. “Benjamin Moore and Hunter Douglas represent the highest in quality, and are both true innovators in their respective industries,” says Tracy Doane, resident designer for AZ Paint Supply. As certified retailers, Tracy and her team are required to go through annual vendor certification so their clients can be confident that they are always receiving the most up-to-date recommendations and advice. “Having just opened in December, and still trying to get the word out, right now we have some great specials,” adds Tracy. “We encourage everyone to stop in for a consultation so we can talk about all of the current trends.” AZ Paint Supply located in the Paradise Village Gateway Shopping Center. For more information, please call 480.757.2000 or visit AZPaintSupply.com.
