LIFESTYLE LETTER

January — Health & Wellness January is here! This is always a month of great renewal. We reflect on our loved ones, lives, and accomplishments during the holidays and set a new or adjusted course for the new year. Some years, I make big resolutions; some years, I make none. This year, I’m doubling down on two things I love: My community and my godson, Michael. As you turn these pages, you’ll read an article about the One Step Coyotes, an adaptive hockey team for adults with physical and mental disabilities. If you have a loved one with a severe disability, you know firsthand how special these programs are. If you don’t have the experience of someone close to you with a disability, then I encourage you to find one! Really, read that article. Ask your friends and neighbors to find an opportunity to SPEND TIME with these special people. It will change your life. My godson Michael is an Angel. He has—not suffers—from Angelman’s Syndrome. This fall, I spent 10 days with him while his parents—my dear family friends—went on a much-deserved vacation. What a blessing. Every time I stay with Michael, I’m reminded that his personality has just as unique characteristics as ours. He loves magic, music, theatre, and animals. He’s a foodie (a REAL foodie!), and his excitement when you walk into the room makes you feel like a star. He’s the star. It's not easy taking care of Michael. It makes you think, stay calm under pressure, find silly things to do, and, most importantly, observe. What I love most about Michael is what I get in return. I am a better person with a bigger heart, more patience, and understanding. I am reminded of how fun doing the little things in life is. He is a wonderful teacher and a blessing. Programs like One Step Coyotes are full of people with blessings like his. Speaking of doing the little things in life, here’s a not-so-little thing we have cooked up for you this month: THE INAUGURAL NORTH PEORIA HOME SHOW! How exciting is that? Come out and be a part of our magical community on January 20th. You can read more about it in this issue, and please join us. And please find an Angel in your life. Double down on things that bring you meaning and joy. For me, that’s Michael – and my community, which is you. J U L I E L AC R O I X , P U B L I S H E R @NORTHPEORIALIFESTYLE

ONE STEP C OYO T E S Adults with Intellectual Disabilities Get the Chance to Play Hockey in Peoria

As we kick off a new year, Peoria residents may be seeking ways to support different groups in the Valley. One group that could use your support in the new year is One Step Coyotes, an adaptive hockey team that is part of One Step Behind (OSBI.org), a non-profit organization providing innovative programs for adults with intellectual disabilities.

WHAT IS ONE STEP BEYOND?

According to Jared Woosley, Director of Special Programs with One Step Beyond, services like these are much needed in the Valley. “One Step Beyond focuses on independent living and life skills, as well as the arts and recreation like One Step Coyotes.”

Currently, One Step Beyond has four campuses in the Valley, one more on the way, and one location in the Bay Area. As an added benefit, the program provides transportation for members to and from the program every weekday.

ONE STEP COYOTES

One Step Coyotes is one of the programs run by One Step Beyond, and it is the first adult special ice hockey program in Arizona. “It’s an opportunity that was created because it hadn’t existed in Arizona prior," explains Woosley. "We started the team back in 2016, and we’ve been going strong since. The seasons run from the beginning of November to the end of February.” CONTINUED >

VOLUNTEERING TO HELP OTHERS

If Peoria residents are looking for volunteer opportunities in 2024, this is a great one to get involved with. Woosley and his team say they are always looking for people interested in volunteering their time or can provide equipment or sponsor an upcoming adaptive hockey event. Woosley knows not everyone can volunteer their time. “With volunteering, the challenge is that we practice at noon every Tuesday and Thursday, so most people interested in volunteering can’t make the daytime hours work," he explains. "But due to the cost of ice time being less expensive during the weekdays, that is when we must practice.” If you cannot volunteer your time but are interested in supporting financially, Woosley says that is always an option. “We are constantly trying to raise money for our ice time

and much-needed gear. Both are very expensive, but we have made it work so far.” For Woosley, it isn’t just about supporting the adults who need and use the program, working with One Step Beyond has become very personal. “It has changed my life. I never thought it was going to grow so much or end up taking up so much of my time. I’m very happy with that, though, because when I witness one of my friends take to the ice for the first time, not ever thinking it could be something they could do, the joy overwhelms everyone.” Woosley knows that sports like hockey can be difficult and even scary, but his goal is to help players overcome that fear. “I watch fear disappear when they step onto the ice and join their friends. It is an experience I know will be great for them, and even more, great practice for them next time they are faced with something in life they might hold back on doing due to being afraid.”

Your Financial Health Start the New Year with a Financial Checkup ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

M A R T Y

G U Z M A N

RetireWithMarty.com

Marty Guzman of Independent Wealth Management & Insurance Services (IndependentWealthMgt.com) encourages you to focus on financial health in the new year.

HOW CAN WE ENSURE WE ARE FINANCIALLY HEALTHY?

We see a physician and get a yearly checkup to ensure we are in top physical shape. Getting a financial checkup annually or after any major life event is equally important. That evaluation can encompass many topics, including income, budget, asset review, and risk tolerance level. Getting a financial check-up allows you to evaluate where you are in your retirement journey and identify possible changes.

WHAT ARE STEPS PEOPLE CAN TAKE TO IMPROVE THEIR FINANCIAL HEALTH?

Ask yourself what retirement looks like for you. Understand what is important in your retirement. Protect your assets, review tax strategies, pay down your debt, and get your annual financial health check-up.

WHAT DO YOU OFFER NORTH PEORIA RESIDENTS?

We believe everyone should be able to live the retirement they've always wanted. We help create a wellthought-out strategy to address your financial concerns. My team and I have put together a comprehensive bundle at RetireWithMarty.com that includes helpful information about retirement, social security planning, income planning, and more. We provide your Retirement Plan, Re-Imagined.
