LIFESTYLE LETTER
November—Thankful In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who have helped us along our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. I've never been happier than I am living here in North Peoria. Between the beautiful scenery, relaxing vibe, and thriving small business climate, it's hard not to be content. Success in life follows blessings in life. Whether your blessings were God-given, earned, chosen, or volun-told, please count them and know that North Peoria has the fabric to activate your talents, dreams, and goals. My three blessings are my family, friends, and kind heart—one given, one chosen, and one earned. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city such a vibrant community. We are incredibly thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. As we prepare to gather with our loved ones this holiday season and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what makes life meaningful and reflect on those blessings.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION TO HOST THANKSGIVING EVENT ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED This time of year, Peoria residents love to get outdoors and participate in events such as 5Ks, half-marathons, and more. Locally owned Walk Forward Coaching, LLC, (WalkForwardCoaching. com) is hosting such an event this Thanksgiving to get people outdoors while giving back to the community. The organization will hold the North Peoria Turkey Trot, and all proceeds will help local teens. Sharon West, founder of Walk Forward Coaching and the North Peoria Turkey Trot, says this is her mission. “I worked in corporate marketing for 10 years until last year when I decided to follow my passion. I resigned from my marketing job, enrolled in an intensive, nationally accredited life coaching program, and opened the doors. And that is when my dream of being an entrepreneur and providing much-needed support for teens and parents began,” says West.
“WE ARE CAPABLE OF AMAZING THINGS!” — SHARON WEST The North Peoria Turkey Trot will be at Liberty Park in the Meadows on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23. There will be a 5K timed race at 8:30 a.m. and a 1-mile untimed race starting at 8:35 a.m. Registration is $10 per person through Sunday, November 5, and $15 per person beginning Monday, November 6. Participants registered by November 5 receive t-shirts (available while supplies last after that). Goodie bags are available while supplies last. Prizes are given for the 5K winners. Turn out to run or cheer on participants. You can enjoy live music at the park during the event. All proceeds go to non-profit programs providing confidence-building opportunities for teens. Register online at WalkForwardCoaching.com/turkeytrot.

Physical therapy had helped to a point, but I still wasn't able to resume my normal training without aggravating my back and being forced to limit my activity. Adult Oasis GRAND VELAS UNVEILS NEW LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN HEART OF LOS CABOS
ARTICLE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRAND VELAS
Over the past decade, Cabo San Lucas—just a two-hour flight from the Valley—has grown into one of the hottest vacation destinations in the world. And it is about to get hotter. This month, the beach-kissed destination will celebrate the opening of one of its most highly anticipated all-inclusive waterfront resorts, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos (LosCabosBoutique.GrandVelas.com). The new concept for Velas Resorts, which also boasts the Forbes Travel Guide 5-star award-winning Grand Velas Los Cabos and Mar Del Cabo in the region, is a stylish, adultsonly sanctuary in the heart of Baja California Sur with just 79 suites to guarantee intimate pampering and utmost privacy.

ENJOY SWEET SUITES Each suite is more than 900 square feet with a private terrace, living area, walk-in shower and Jacuzzi, and premium complimentary minibar. In addition, there’s a 24-hour personal butler who can set up everything from tequila and mezcal tastings to intricate marriage proposals and extravagant vowel renewals. The suites provide easy access to the property’s infinity pool and the private beach, which feature loungers, daybeds, cabanas, and full food and beverage service. There’s also proximity to a soothing cactus garden.
EPICUREAN DELIGHTS To ensure epicurean exploration at the highest level during your stay, Velas enlisted 2-Michelin-Star chef Sydney Schutte to consult across all eateries, resulting in a rich diversity of ingredients and flavors in casual and fine dining offerings. Of note are Loto, a high-end Japanese Mexican fusion restaurant; Del Mar, an oceanfront eatery that takes advantage of
the cornucopia of fresh seafood options; and nightly themed dinners across the property. Resort guests may also book reservations at any of the five exclusive restaurants at nearby Grand Velas Los Cabos, including the award-winning Cocina de Autor, also led by Schutte.
WELLNESS RULES Wellness is another focus at Grand Velas Boutique, thanks in great part to the SE spa, which invites its guests to take part in a water ceremony during their stay. The immersive experience, free for guests who also book a spa treatment, features a guided program that includes the sauna, steam room, ice room, and Jacuzzi. Specialty items such as tinctures, aloe, and masks are utilized to enhance the restorative effects of each facility. The ceremony’s grand finale is time in the magnesium pool, which has been shown to relax muscles naturally, improve skin elasticity and hair health, and even lower blood pressure. CONTINUED >

Why is hyper-personalized crucial to us? We understand each guest has distinct tastes, needs, and preferences, which moves us to provide a stay as unique as they are. After the water journey, guests may indulge in various treatments inspired by the ocean and natural desert surroundings, many of which are combined with sound therapy using ocean waves as their inspiration. Infrared heat detoxification therapy, meditation, and sleep therapy in a specialized station equipped with state-of-the-art technology are also available.
OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Of course, considering Cabo San Lucas is known as the “Aquarium of the World” (a nickname first given by storied explorer Jacques Cousteau), Grand Velas Boutique also offers a bucket list of outdoor experiences to maximize the wonders in and around sparkling blue water.

December to late April is whale season, which offers an opportunity to spot blue, gray, and orca species on most days. Grand Velas Boutique concierge team can book a host of expeditions on large, small, or private vessels to see the gliding giants dance across the water near the boat, often breaching from the ocean with their young or as part of the mating ritual. Grant Velas also works directly with Marina Cabo San Lucas to offer luxury yacht, sailboat, and fishing charters, as well as sunset cruises past Lovers Beach and its famous arches, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Both snorkeling and SCUBA diving excursions are available, as are a host of activities for land lovers, including ziplining, rock climbing, ATV, and canopy tours through the Boca de Sierra National Park.

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season
The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort
Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside. 3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup. 4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined. 5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy. 6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended. 7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal. 8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.

Different dishes can transport a reader to new regions of the world, reveal a character’s culture, or symbolically deepen the meaning of a text. True crime fans and foodies alike will enjoy this beautifully written novel. The novel follows a Vancouver based chef, Jeremy Papier and his failing bistro. As Papier tries to hold his dreams together, his homeless father drags him into a real-life, 1940s “cold case” investigation. The novel mindfully uses the investigation as well as Papier’s commitment to locally grown foods to pay tribute to Vancouver’s landscape and history.
Love is in the air at this Monday night cooking school. The novel follows a cast of hapless students as they are instructed in both the kitchen and in life by the school’s owner, Lillian. Lillian is the group’s fairy godmother as she hands out morsels of advice and challenges the students with advanced recipes. A cozy read, be prepared to fall in love with the decadence of the school’s dishes as well as the sweet message that lingers long after you put down the book.
A Moveable Feast
The Sol Majestic
by Ernest Hemingway
by Ferrett Steinmetz
Published after his untimely death, A Moveable Feast is Hemingway’s memoir. A love letter to 1920s Paris and the literary movement, Hemingway charters the reader through his early years there, one cafe at a time. Along the way, familiar characters like Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald float in and out. This no-frills prose will stick to your ribs and leave you satisfied.
If you love science fiction, this big-hearted, culinary space opera is sure to hit the spot. The story follows impoverished Kenna, an aspiring guru who hungrily wanders the cosmos until he wins dinner at the galaxy’s most renowned restaurant, The Sol Majestic. A novel that is both fun and thought provoking, Steinmetz uses striking food imagery to explore what truly excites the spirit. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/N O RT HP E O R I A
