Children Raised With Pets Show Many Benefits

Few things brighten our days quite like the presence of children and pets. It’s with great pleasure that we present the 'Kids & Pets' edition, which celebrates the profound joy (and the beautiful chaos) they bring into our lives.

Children embody our hopes for a brighter tomorrow and form the very bedrock of our society. Their innocence, curiosity and limitless potential have the capacity to shape the future in ways beyond our imagination.

Pets, too, offer unique companionship. They shower us with unconditional love and create environments where we can learn and grow. I know I love mine. The bond between children and their furry or feathery friends is often profound, nurturing qualities such as empathy, responsibility and companionship.

Personally, I’ve never known a life without pets. From dogs and cats to parrots, bunnies and hamsters, my home and heart have always been full. Looking back, I honestly wouldn’t even know what a quiet or hair-free life looks like, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. They aren’t just animals we share a roof with; they’re the very fabric of our families.

Here’s to all the monumental memories, the muddy paws, and the endless laughter that pets and your little ones create together. DANA

Counseling Tips For Youths

Newtown Therapy And Wellness Center Experts Offer Helpful Approaches To Life’s Pressures

ANGELA LUCARINI, MA, LPC, NCC

Now more than ever, kids and teens are inundated with potential sources of anxiety, whether it be at home, in classrooms or on screens. Professionals at Newtown Therapy and Wellness Center offer their expertise in identifying and working through these anxieties.

According to Angela Lucarini, MA, LPC, NCC, parents can keep an eye out for warning signs like excessive worry, irritability, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, frequent headaches; or stomachaches without a clear medical cause; avoidance of certain situations; increased reassurance-seeking; or a noticeable decline in school performance.

There are a number of coping exercises available to kids and teens looking to manage their anxiety.

“One of the most effective approaches is helping children and teens build a toolbox of coping strategies before anxiety feels overwhelming,” Angela says.

“Different techniques work for different individuals, so it’s helpful to encourage experimentation.”

For example, she suggests some people might benefit from taking slow, deep breaths to help calm the nervous system, while others use grounding exercises and mindfulness skills.

“I often encourage parents to start with observations rather than assumptions,” Angela says. “Children and teens benefit from hearing that difficult feelings are manageable and that support is available.”

Angela Lucarini, MA, LPC, NCC

LIZ DOOLEY, M.ED.

Anxiety and depression are two primary concerns when it comes to the mental health of high-achieving students, says Liz Dooley, M.Ed.

“Anxiety arises when kids and teens overstate the consequences of a failure,” Liz explains. “Depression can arise when kids perceive they’ve failed in some way, when they compare themselves to peers or when they prioritize achievement to such a degree that they abandon their own physical and emotional needs.”

Anxiety is especially rampant when children and teens seek external validation for their self-worth, anchoring it to accolades such as good grades and awards.

“If kids don’t receive validation, they may question their own worthiness and their likelihood of being loved and respected by those around them, including their parents,” Liz says. “As parents, our goal is to help make self-worth ‘an inside job,’ something that’s anchored deeply and doesn’t swell with praise and crash with criticism.”

Helping kids along this journey can be as simple as a small shift in language, moving the focus from an outcome to their inherent worth, she says.

“It’s subtle, but it matters because it reminds kids that your love for them is not dependent on any particular outcome,” Liz says.

Liz Dooley, M.Ed.

MELISSA GRAHAM, LPC, CMPC

Athletics are another area that can lead to anxiety in children and teens, especially when playing sports at high levels.

“Although mental health and performance are separate, they overlap significantly,” says Melissa Graham, LPC, CMPC. “For example, a youth athlete who struggles with confidence or performance anxiety often struggles with other forms of anxiety or generally lacks self-esteem. This is why it’s so important for athletes, even at the youth level, to work with a clinician who treats both clinical mental health challenges and mental performance/ sport psychology.”

Performance-related anxiety often sits at the intersection of internal and external pressure.

“When talking to most of my athlete clients, the pressure they feel to perform well comes from within and not from anyone else,” Melissa explains. “However, with there being a lot tied to athletic performance, like college scholarships or parents’ time and money, athletes often feel pressure not to let others down.”

This anxiety is compounded as the landscape of youth sports becomes increasingly competitive and public.

“Additionally, as sports become increasingly competitive at younger ages, a new level of pressure is placed on kids who simply

want to have fun,” Melissa continues. “Sports can quickly become a job, whether through college scholarships, NIL deals or professional contracts. This adds a new layer of pressure to performance at such a young age. These are challenges that kids aren’t meant to deal with and they need support.”

As a certified mental performance consultant (CMPC), Melissa helps clients shift unhelpful thought patterns to improve both daily function and physical performance.

“My goal as a therapist is not only to help clients alleviate symptoms, but also to help them become the best versions of themselves and thrive in sports and beyond,” she says.

Despite these challenges, team sports play an important role in children’s growth, helping them develop problem-solving, communication and leadership skills.

“Organized sports help children connect with their peers to achieve a common goal and help build confidence by facilitating goal setting, achievement and seeing progress over time,” Melissa says. “These skills often translate well into academic and work environments later on.”

Two Council Rock North High School students recently performed solo recitals at Carnegie Hall in New York, making them two of only 24 students from the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York to be selected for this internationally respected Dr. Andor and Joy Kiszely Auditioned Recital. Participation included college students from legendary institutions such as The Juilliard School and The Curtis Institute. The recital is known as a distinguished annual event hosted by the nonprofit organization Philadelphia Music Teachers Association (PhMTA).

The two Newtown students were rising junior Tyler Yen and rising sophomore Everest Kim. Nicholas Mynyk, PhMTA Carnegie Hall Kiszley chair in New York City and incoming PhMTA vice-president, serves as their proud piano teacher, who holds an impressive reputation himself of being a highly experienced international concert pianist and organist, clinician, music director and educator. "This is a rare achievement for Everest and Tyler, and they each were given significant solo stage time at one of the world’s most prestigious classical music venues," he adds.

Two Newtown Senior High Students Among Elite Soloists Invited To Conduct Carnegie Hall Recitals

Council Rock Pianists GRACE CARNEGIE HALL

As a Newtown resident, Nicholas also teaches piano lessons in Newtown and has played at St. Luke’s Newtown. Admission to his private studio in Newtown is by audition and invitation only. He also is a cofounder of the PhMTA Scholarship Program for underrepresented students and teachers.

He says Tyler and Everest performed the detailed works of Chopin and Liszt at Carnegie Hall.

"Both students also received an award in the audition to professionally record at Steinway & Sons Center City in Philadelphia. The additional recording award was given only to the top 12 scores. The auditions included college undergraduates up to age 22," shares Nicholas.

"These are highly gifted high school students who will go on to have significant impacts in the world of classical music."

Nicholas holds a bachelor's and master degree in music from Westminster Choir College of Rider University and Studies at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, Rome, Italy. His doctoral studies took place at Temple University. During graduate studies, he served as the assistant organist of Princeton University Chapel. Additionally, he has performed as an organist, conductor and pianist at the Kimmel Center, Carnegie Hall Stern & Weill, Merkin Hall, Princeton University Chapel and Graduate College, Juilliard School, Temple, Westminster Choir College, The Pontifical Institute, Marywood University, Wilkes University, La Madeleine: Paris, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia Garden Series and Christ Church Old City, and throughout Europe.

TYLER YEN, SON OF ALICE YEN, PHD, LC

Tyler was 5 years old when he started playing the piano, making it 11 years of lessons and finetuning.

"I also learned to play the violin in third grade but switched to baritone/euphonium in fourth grade. Currently, I play euphonium with Council Rock North's symphonic band ensemble and Youth Orchestra of Bucks County Concert Winds ensemble," he adds.

Everest Kim

His mother also plays the piano and violin. "Both my siblings play instruments, too. Kira, who is 14, plays the piano and violin, and my younger brother, Jalen, who's 12, plays the piano and cello," he states While Tyler says he recalls his nerves and feelings of anxiety before his performance at Carnegie Hall, he also remembers the overall excitement of the day and sense of joy and accomplishment after the recital concluded.

"The hardest piece of music I've ever learned is Chopin Etude Op. 10, No. 12 (“Revolutionary”)," Tyler reveals, adding that he also enjoys playing contemporary music because he prefers melodic theme songs.

"I do hope to continue playing piano recreationally in college and after," says the student who truly enjoys biology and social studies classes.

Tyler's advice after contemplating his experience with this high-pressure musical event: "Make the decision to commit to something, even when it seems scary, because when you stick with it and see it to completion, the sense of accomplishment and joy at the end is rewarding."

EVEREST KIM, SON OF ELLEN KIM, MD, AND JOE KIM, MD

Everest has been playing the piano since kindergarten, so for about 10 years, all supported with  lessons. He started on the piano, and then took up other instruments, including the clarinet, oboe for about four years and for the past two years the tenor saxophone, for which he plays with the school's symphonic band and jazz band.

"I'm about to join marching band next year," he adds.  Everest says his whole family is musically inclined!

"My oldest sister, Sierra, plays the piano, viola and clarient. My other sister, Ashley, also started on piano and is playing the cello. My younger brother, Logan, plays the piano in addition to violin but switched to currently playing the viola. My dad grew up playing the oboe, clarinet and sax. My mom grew up playing the piano, violin and handbells," he shares.

Everest says one detail he will remember most about his first performance at Carnegie Hall was being impressed by how the building, architecture and interior really looked.

Locally, Everest has performed in recitals held by his piano teachers. He also previously played as a volunteer at assistant living homes and senior citizen communities such as Northampton Manor and Anne's Choice. Furthermore, he's a part of the Youth Orchestra of Bucks County (YOBC) where he plays the oboe and performed with the Concert Winds Ensemble and Philharmonia last year for their fall and spring concerts held in Newtown.

Tyler Yen

As a classical enthusiast when it comes to music, his hardest piece ever learned is Chopin Ballade No 1 in G minor, Op 23.

Everest, whose favorite subject in school is math, even wrote his own improvisational music at a digital music camp, too.

"As an adult, I'm considering using my piano skills to continue to perform or teach students how to play," he states, adding that he's also a Star Wars fan and likes to play chess.

BACKGROUND OF THIS ESTEEMED RECITAL

Andor and Joy Kiszely were two of the most influential members of the Philadelphia Music Teachers Association. They each served multiple times as president, helped establish student festivals and chaired this annual auditioned recital that's now named in their honor.

Joy Miller Kiszely received her musical training at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Indiana University School of Music and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Dr. Andor Kiszely received his musical training at the Franz Liszt Royal Academy of Music in Budapest and the State Academy of Music in Vienna.

In 1967, the Kiszelys founded the Main Line Conservatory in Ardmore. Their work over five decades helped raise the standards of excellence for PhMTA, making this recital a fitting tribute to their legacy -- now of which Tyler and Everest are part.

VIACHESLAV KUZEMA PROVIDES UNIQUE SCULPTURES CREATED WITH ARTISTIC PASSION

Ever wonder where the prominent, 9-foot-tall owl carved out of a maple tree stump on North Main Street in Yardley came from? Viacheslav Kuzema is the talented sculptor of it and other area creations.

Also known as Slava Kuzema, he's a Ukrainian-born chainsaw sculptor/artist based in the Philadelphia region. He's widely recognized for his large-scale wood sculptures and “family tree carvings,” often transforming dead or dying tree stumps into intricate wildlife or animal masterpieces such dogs, eagles, owls, horses and herons.

"Each artwork is crafted with a touching attention to detail, inspired by nature and human emotions," assures the artist who started his journey as a sculptor while a teenager in high school, participating in international exhibitions.

In 1990, Slava graduated from the Art School for gifted youth. He then was accepted to the Grekov University of Fine Art, specializing in sculpture; he graduated with honors in 1995.

He now accepts private commissions for customized yard art. 267.367.9934

escape to France

A LEISURELY BARGE CRUISE ALONG FRANCE’S CANAL DU MIDI OFFERS A QUIET LUXURY ESCAPE

THE SOUTH

of

There is something a bit magical about the South of France. It conjures images of rolling hills set along the Mediterranean, vast vineyards and olive trees swaying in the breezes. The images come to life when you book a luxury barge cruise with European Waterways ( EuropeanWaterways.com). It offers the perfect opportunity to experience the region’s slow pace.

Canal du Midi is a 330-year-old canal that runs from the Mediterranean coast inland through the famous Languedoc wine region. This is an opportunity for a true escape from everyday life.

WHAT IS A BARGE CRUISE?

Barges, originally used to shuttle goods along the inner waterways throughout

Europe, are now floating hotels. European Waterways operates b arges from April to October.

One of three boats to traverse Canal du Midi, Enchanté is an “ultra-deluxe” converted barge with four cabins for up to eight passengers. Each suite on Enchanté features an ensuite bathroom. All suites are on the lower level, while the salon,

dining room, open kitchen and sun deck are above. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, the staff accommodating and the pace of the barge allows you to slow down and unwind. In fact, the barge moves slowly along the canal, giving passengers a chance to stroll along or ride one of the onboard bicycles.

THE BARGING EXPERIENCE

The barging experience is not anything like other cruises. With only eight passengers (although some boats have the capacity for 10 to 20 passengers), it provides a quiet escape.

Each day, you cruise slowly along the canal, going a total distance of about 50 miles over one week. The day’s leisurely routine begins with a sit-down breakfast and specially prepared dishes from the chef. You either cruise in the morning and take a short excursion in the afternoon, or vice versa.

Lunch is a gourmet 3-course meal paired with local wines. Dinner is a beautiful production with appetizers, main course, cheese course and dessert. Again, everything is paired with both a white and red wine.

EXCURSIONS ALONG THE WAY

Throughout the cruise, there are small stops along the way. This area of France is filled with gourmet delights and history, and you have a chance to explore both during your cruise.

You’ll visit l’Oulibo, a high-end olive oil producer growing Lucques olives. Enjoy a tasting of the oils and the olives, and pick up a few to take home. Another day, you’ll taste local balsamic vinegar. This is a real treat and a unique experience sampling a variety of flavors.

During the barge cruise, you’ll have a chance to visit three of what may be the most beautiful towns in France: Minerve, Lagrasse and Carcassonne. Lagrasse is an artisan town surrounding an 8th-century Benedictine Abbey. Minerve is home to a 12th-century Cathar fort with spectacular views. Carcassonne is a medieval fortified city with 52 watchtowers and portcullis.

There is also an excursion to Narbonne, once a Roman capital. There, you’ll have a chance to wander through Les Halles de Narbonne—the indoor food market—with the chef, picking out items for him to prepare once back onboard Enchanté.

European Waterways offers the ideal escape to the South of France and other destinations across Europe.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.
