Here's To Home & Design
Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.
Author Wendy Wunder stated: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”
As we thought about home, we wanted to highlight what makes it special to you, the readers. As you flip through the pages of this edition, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you, and most all of your home.
As a reminder, March 16 is the 8th annual Shamrock Shuffle. If you haven't participated, you should! We enjoy celebrating the day during which everyone goes green, including kilts and tutus, and participates in the 5K and festivities. Let's give a shout out to the dozens of volunteers and sponsors who make this event possible. “March 16 will be one of the most fun days in our little town,” says Christine Edmonds, president of A Love For Life, the charity partner for this year's Shuffle and nonprofit dedicated to raising funds for pancreatic cancer research. All 100% of the money raised is donated to the Abramson Cancer Center at The University of Pennsylvania.
Race organizers, Boss Events, a local company owned by Council Rock High School graduates Ryan O’Keefe and Chris Seiler, couldn't be prouder to host the 8th year of this fun event. "We grew up here in Newtown, and we wanted to create an event for the town that promotes health and wellness but is also family friendly and fun,” says Chris, “and we love seeing everyone at the start line in their green running through the streets of Newtown Borough and then going back and hanging out with friends and family at The Temp."
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Happy March!

Rittenhouse Home Designer Suggests Top Three Interior Areas
For Updates, Renovations
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY DESIGNS AND IMAGES PROVIDED BY RITTENHOUSE HOME
While overall home real estate inventory is low, now's a beneficial period to remodel and renovate home interiors, assures Jennifer Lynn Myers, local interior designer and owner of Newtown-based Rittenhouse Home. She explains, "With fewer people buying and moving, it's a great time to invest in our current homes to increase our property values." She recommends considering three refresh steps for starters.
Soothing earthy color palettes, natural stone surfaces, organic modern tones and deep moody hues are among popular colors this year, says Jennifer. Neutral colors, mixed with warmer tones and wood hues, replace grey tones. Warm beiges, browns, camels and cream colors will be everywhere in 2024, she adds.
In bathrooms, muted green colors are being incorporated. She adds clients are removing
bathtubs to add steam showers. Additionally, curbless shower entries are popular for stylish aging-in-place options.
This luxury interior designer shares many clients are requesting first-level renovations that include floors and stairs, with warm overall approaches morphing into family room spaces, often with tone-on-tone themes. "Black is still being used for accents, but the lines are cleaner. Rich leather is coming back, as well as crushed velvet chairs," says Jennifer.
The desire of consumers for home spaces to feel truly timeless may come from homeowners aiming to stay in their homes for a longer duration of time, well into retirement.
"A home should tell your story without saying a word. I tell my clients to make design decisions based on what you love because things you love never go out of style," suggests Jennifer.

Wow-Factor Window Coverings
Secure Laser-Precise Treatments From Locally Operated Made In The Shade
Every home or business needs some kind of window treatment, but busy lifestyles and schedules often keep most everyone from being able to “shop around" for window coverings. "We offer the perfect solution," says Tony Rich, franchise owner of Made in the Shade Blinds & More Bucks County. "We bring the showroom to you with our quality window treatments and shop-athome convenience."
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
Tony Rich
Tony and his installers provide blinds, shades, shutters, outdoor patio shades, and even Smart Drape Shades. He says Smart Shades offer the best of both worlds by providing a sheer fabric option on one side to let in more sunlight with an opposing light-filtering privacy mode on the other side with just the turn of the wand.
He adds that these types of Smart Shades are excellent for patio sliding glass doors, and that people can walk right through them because they're still individual vanes and they're softer due to not being plastic.
"What's really becoming popular is our exterior patio shades. They can be motorized or manual, and are designed to cover spaces up to 25 feet wide. Homeowners just need a covered patio to work with," Tony explains.
DECOR TRENDS | HOME + DESIGN
22
He says the new patio screening shades repel insects while also decreasing the amount of UV rays and heat coming into the outdoor rooms, cooling the temperature inside the spaces by 15 to 20 degrees. "We also have an option with zippered channels to block wind speeds up to 25 mph. Our customers are placing heaters and TVs in these patios and using them year-round like a whole other room," he adds.
"When I arrive at free in-home consultations, I bring our sample selections of custom window treatments so customers can enjoy a personalized selection experience. That also enables them to match our samples to their decor," he states.
Not positive about a color? Tony suggests holding his samples next to targeted windows to see for sure. "Put samples on your floor. Compare them to your wall color. I'm happy to help everyone find the right match for every window."
This complimentary service allows customers in their own environments to avoid guessing, and to see exactly how light, room colors and furnishings affect their options and choices, Tony adds.
Tony also participates in a Realtor Partner program through which he serves as the preferred vendor for real estate companies, such as Newtownheadquartered Marcolla Realty.
With this being Tony's sixth year in the drapery and shades business, he says he feels really good about assisting others with overall home ambiance. "People have visions in their minds of how they want their window treatments to look, and I help them achieve that. It's great to design window coverings and exterior shades that help customers decorate their rooms into spaces they like to be in, and are ones they're really proud of."

Local Roofer With Military Ties
Finding a qualified roofing contractor with verified credentials can be an uphill climb. Adding a focus on a philanthropy-based mission is an even tougher row to hoe. In comes United Veterans Roofing LLC, of Newtown, turning the corner into their sixth year of business with a super-positive head of steam. UVR is known for delivering high-quality projects, doing fantastic good along the way.
“As a family-owned and operated company, we pride ourselves on making our customers feel as if they're part of our family and we're protecting their homes as if they were our own," says Amanda Capoferri, UVR sales manager.
From a quality viewpoint, UVR backs their work via being Master Elite Certified by standard industries company GAF, a bragging right only afforded to about 2 percent of roofing companies nationally. Amanda says GAF also rolled out copper alloy shingles, which help to prevent algae and discoloration seen on shingles for 20-plus years.
ARTICLE BY JOHN FIDUCCIA
Resulting in successful projects are typically customers' top priorities but knowing projects contribute to helping others in need makes partnering with UVR more fruitful. UVR had military veterans in mind when forming the business model. In addition to delivering two complete roofing systems to veterans in need, UVR is closely involved with the Wild Bill Guarnere Memorial Fund and donates to various veterans-based charities.
“You’ll never find anyone who's more grateful and thankful, seeing the look of

gratitude that you're giving back to the veterans who've given so much for us,” Amanda confirms.
She says the company's employees volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, working on completing homes that start some people's lives.
Though roofing is their main line of business, UVR professionals also offer gutter, siding and window replacement services. This wide offering positions UVR to be long-term partners with and create repeat customers who can use the company for multiple projects.
In addition to improvement projects, UVR also does a fair amount of work handling storm damage, where they can quickly facilitate urgent repairs. They take on both residential and commercial projects, allowing them to take on work of all shapes and sizes.
“We’re doing a lot more commercial projects recently, including the Blue Point Grill, which was a beautiful project with metal roofing and siding," says Amanda, noting UVR is a Newtown Business Association member.
Amanda says the team offers free estimates or complimentary inspections, as well as financing options in partnership with Service Finance Company, LLC.
“It’s super fulfilling, and I’m really proud of the work that we’ve been able to do as a company to get involved in the communities, make a difference, and help people get their new starts.”

INGREDIENTS
• 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin
• 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum
• 1/2oz- Lime juice
• Topped with ginger beer
• Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame
GARNISH
• Small paint brush
• Simple syrup
• Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame
INSTRUCTIONS
Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).
