The month of May bridges spring and summer. We celebrate new growth as flowers bloom and trees yield new leaves and fruit. Derived from the Greek Goddess Maia, who was associated with fertility and growth, May symbolizes birth. Perhaps it's no coincidence that Mother's Day is celebrated this month. In the spirit of Maia, we've asked a few remarkable local women to partake in an introspective activity by sharing with us what they would tell their younger selves. I don't know about you, but there's nothing more inspiring than hearing the journeys of strong women. How they overcame obstacles and most intriguing, how those obstacles fueled their future success. Serena Williams said it best, “Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on.” If given the opportunity to provide my younger self with advice, I'd say: "Don't ruminate over mistakes. Utilize those experiences as growth and move forward. Have confidence in yourself and your vision. If your gut is telling you it's not right, it's not. Stay the course, avoid the noise, and chip away at the small feats, as they will eventually yield great rewards." In this edition, we share how to make time at home for centering in customized spaces to maximize downtime, the benefits of individualized workouts for her (or him) to promote age-defying wellness, why it’s important to incorporate skin care at any age as part of a woman’s routine, and the joy of telling personal/family stories through collaborative interior design. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, female role models and mentors who are leading the way for our young women.

Helping women was the crucial objective in Victoria Rappaport’s conception for La Maison House of Aesthetics in 2018. She says it's truly a “one-stop shop” in Newtown for all women who want to look and feel good about themselves. Catering to all ages and skin types is a differentiator for La Maison. Services include cancer skin care, hair removal (waxing, laser and dermaplaning), injectables (Dysport and Botox) and microneedling. There’s also acne care, featuring treatments that calm down the skin and allow it to breathe, which clients state is especially helpful due to long-term mask wearing. La Maison’s latest skincare offering is a new, noninvasive option called Skinwave, which is a 45-minute hydrogen therapy treatment that incorporates three different nutrient solutions to revitalize skin. “It's a step up from a HydraFacial,” Vicky enthuses. She says the bonus is that there's no post-redness or reaction like with some skincare treatments -- just clean, glowing skin. She adds that this new treatment can be combined with a facial for a relaxing, pampering 1.5-hour experience. Especially for Mother’s Day, La Maison staffers say they will run a special promotion: For clients who buy a $200 gift card for someone, they will get a $50 gift card as an add-on (to share or to keep for one's self). With such a focus on assisting women, it's no surprise that La Maison also has a life coach on-site, and that they offer both acupuncture and integrative medicine. One Newtown interior designer relishes catering to various people's tastes for many different reasons. Jennifer Lynn Poe, founder and owner of Rittenhouse Home, says she enjoys curating all in one location the elements and options that clients need to refresh or build-from-scratch those coveted spaces that match their lifestyles. "We work with 300 vendors, and based on the volume and nature of my business, we can navigate different price points, styles and sources. We provide the look that tells a cohesive story, and we work with our clients until their stories are complete," Jennifer says. In her showroom, Jennifer shares samples for furniture, custom cabinetry, lighting, décor and accessories. Rittenhouse Home services cover bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, entertainment areas and exterior oases. "We've recently handled quite a few outdoor projects, such as patios, pool houses and indoor/outdoor living areas. There's a new movement with fabrications, as well as pivot doors and screens, that allows more options for creating additional off-season areas," she says. "After the past couple of years of people really using their homes, they better understand what was missing and what they need. We provide those touches." Due to Jennifer's art, business, real estate and home renovation background, she says she understands why many homeowners seek renovation options to span five to 10 years, while still maximizing their return-on-investment. "Trends are fun, but we try to get to timeless designs so clients don't ever feel like they're walking into a time warp," she says. Jennifer provides a new construction package, and is happy to work with builders to provide interior design assistance with blueprints during construction periods, especially regarding real-life scaling associated with furniture. She says her service model is different in that she offers a one-time design fee, not hourly based fees.

"We follow an organic, creative process to design. Usually, clients will give me a genre, and may have a picture in-hand. Then I can put enough choices in front of them without overwhelming them. We use 3-D rendering tools, which are super helpful in showing what spaces can look like. Clients are really receptive to receiving my guidance," she adds.

4 MUST-HAVE ITEMS IN KITCHENS Various elements are specific to the style of a new or renovated kitchen; however, Jennifer asserts there are a few key features that can be incorporated, no matter the design: 1. Pull-out Trash and Recycling -- Waste containers take up floor space in kitchens. When remodeling a kitchen, consider opting for custom cabinets built to enclose these odorous bins. 2. Utensils/Cutlery Divider -- Custom dividers for utensils and cutlery make it easy to locate and organize. Have utensils drawer located near cooking and prep areas for quick access and quicker cleanup. 3. Rollout Drawers -- Deep cabinets get cluttered, often with cookware hidden in the back. Getting custom rollout drawers built into a kitchen cabinet increases efficiency and visibility of all cookware essentials. 4. WHAT KELLY WOULD TELL HER YOUNGER SELF: "'We live our lives forward but understand them backward.' I first heard this quote from a chaplain at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Sister Alice Strogen. She told my husband and me this invaluable advice when our 30-week old preemie twins were fighting for their lives in 2010. We didn't understand the quote then as well as we do now; life is not a problem to be solved but a journey to be experienced. There is a divide we cross sometime in our adulthood where we can better understand our past experiences. Experience is valuable and an unforgiving teacher. We know how our actions and experiences have benefited or harmed us and those around us, and it would be easier for us to share and apply this understanding to our youth. Still, we have to remember everyone has their own journey to live and reflect on. I'd try to explain to my younger self this truth, so hopefully, I'd see true blessings in a scraped knee."

Michael’s Jewelers has satisfied customers for nearly five decades. Michael Kanoff, owner of Michael's Jewelers and native of Yardley, says he was working in wholesale jewelry in Atlanta when he remembers getting a phone call from his father, a jeweler, telling him that part of 5-miles of woods in Lower Makefield was being transformed into a shopping plaza, making it a good place to expand. "Dad asked if I'd like to come home and open a store there with my family, and we've been in the Oxford Oaks shopping center since it opened in 1997," he says, noting the location branched from the business' launch in Fairless Hills during 1976. Though the business handles jewelry of all kinds, Michael indicates the focus has been on weddings, where team members help brides-to-be and future grooms select perfect wedding rings. One current trend is men’s wedding bands in alternative metals, of which Michael’s has plenty of unique and creative choices. The Michael’s team runs a large sales promotion in May, dubbed as a “Bridal Event,” to dovetail what's historically the most popular month for engagements, and of course, the lead into wedding season. Completing the full-service loop, Michael’s professionals also offer jewelry and watch repair, something that's become a niche market with fewer area repair shops. Michael says he loved jewelry as a kid, and early on knew it was his path forward. He moved up in the ranks at the family store, beginning by running errands, he remembers. After finishing high school, he says he worked his way up in jewels starting external to the family business, selling for other jewelers and working the circuit as a wholesaler -- all until he got the life-changing phone call from his dad.
