It has seemed a bit miraculous, thinking back to having launched a brandnew magazine unknowingly right before COVID-19 attacked the world and us locally, and then building that magazine from scratch and growing it during the unprecedented pandemic of the past two years. It seemed part of the miracle that our advertising partners also made it through the economic dishevel of the pandemic in their creative, resourceful ways.

None of us did it alone. It was the strength and resilience of the Newtown and surrounding community residents and business owners that succeeded, despite waves and waves of pandemic-related challenges. We did it together. We pulled off small miracles week after week.

So, we celebrated during the magazine's anniversary month of December at The Temperance House at 5 S. State St., as Newtown Lifestyle turned 2 years old!! You may've also noticed that we updated the name of the magazine to Newtown City Lifestyle and are giving it a fresh graphic look. We also added new circulation into New Hope and Washington Crossing.

In honor of the anniversary, we supported a beneficial communitywide cause. Raffle baskets worth approximately $4,500 were donated by 20 area businesses, and proceeds from ticket sales for raffle baskets at our anniversary event were donated to the Newtown Township Police Benevolent Association to subsidize training and expenses for the officers in the event they face hardship. We're delighted to report we were able to deliver a check for $2,047 to our local police PBA as a result.

This month's publication theme rallies around local love. And I want to share here what I feel every day -- I just love Newtown and the surrounding region. We hope you're loving what you see and discover in this magazine, and that you enjoy doing business with our advertisers, too.

Newtown Business Association Donates To 'Shop With A Cop' Program Newtown Business Association members again supported the 2021 'Shop With A Cop' program with another donation of $1,500.

It's a national program, however, locally, the program’s participants are Council Rock School District elementary students who face life challenges, such as a parent losing a job, homelessness, military deployment or economic shortcomings. Each child is allotted a $150 gift card to purchase gifts for themselves and their family members. NBA has supported this program since 2019.

100+ Women Who Care Bucks County Support Local Charitable Groups Members of 100+ Women Who Care Bucks County selected Athletes Helping Athletes as their winner to receive their 2021 fourth quarter financial donation, which is made possible by each member providing $100 per meeting ($400 per year). Lynne Kelleher, BHHS Fox & Roach Realtors, says the 100+ group's next meeting is tentatively set for March 7.

They will be considering/voting among Bucks County Opportunity Council, Roxy Therapy Dogs and Between Friends Outreach as a recipient.

Newtown Students, Teacher Work To Get Hershey Kisses As State Candy Plans for designating Hershey Kisses as the commonwealth's official state candy began locally as part of a lesson from Newtown Middle School history teacher Richard Loughran to give his students first-hand experience in working with the government process. The teacher formed the Hershey Kiss Committee last January, and he says the students took it from there. Pennsylvania State Rep. Thomas Mehaffie ultimately introduced an act that would make the Hershey Kiss the state's recognized candy.

Community College Awarded $29.9K Grant To Combat Sexual Assault Bucks County Community College is one of 34 higher education institutions receiving an "It's On Us PA" grant to combat sexual violence on college campuses. The Newtown-based college was awarded $29,911 to go toward initiatives aligned with both the It's On Us PA campaign goals and a state act that requires all institutions to have clear, understandable written policy on sexual harassment and sexual violence. Gov. Tom Wolf launched the program in 2016.

“Champagne” on French labels means it’s really from Champagne!

Outside of Champagne; French Cremant is from France, but not from the Champagne region.

Other reliable sources; Italian Prosecco and Spanish Cava.

Champagne is festive, celebratory and the perfect way to enhance Valentine’s Day, New Year’s, a birthday or anniversary. But don’t stop there! Champagne and its sparkling cousins from around the world also are the easiest solution to the question: What wine goes with that? They pretty much go with anything. American sparklers offer a slightly fruitier flavor profile, while the French versions are a bit toastier. The French wines also have a more refined, delicate, smaller bubble, giving them a bit different mouth feel. These differences simply add to one's sparkling alternatives. Celebrate and enjoy!

In France, the word “champagne” is legally restricted for use with the bubbly stuff created within a specific geographic region called (surprise) Champagne, an area roughly 100 miles northeast of Paris. French law also requires Champagne be made with any or all of just three grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. This French tradition is largely respected by most serious sparkling wine makers throughout the world. This is why the term “Methode Champenoise," is often seen, but not the actual word “Champagne," on a bottle of bubbly produced beyond the boundaries of France’s famous region.

Rosés are beautiful alternatives to the typically white sparklers, though usually a little more expensive.

Gift boxes usually include two glasses along with the wine and are popular during holidays.

Americans with French parents: Roederer Estate (Louis Roederer); Mumm Napa (G.H. Mumm); Domaine Carneros (Taittinger).

Blanc de Blanc sparklers are made entirely from Chardonnay.

Blanc de Noir sparklers include either Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, or both, along with Chardonnay.

France’s major wine region for the province of Champagne are northernmost.

Lily's Chocolate Paradise began with Lily Leong's love of everything chocolate, specifically chocolate-covered pretzels. Over the years, other chocolates were added and now her store offers 50-plus items. But it wasn't always that expansive. As a former legal assistant in Philadelphia for decades, Lily remained focused on computer work each day until she could get into her kitchen each night to make handmade chocolates.

"Making chocolates is a happy business, and who doesn’t want to be happy?" she proclaims.

She says she began her chocolatier journey at home during 1993 after her first child was born. She then gave chocolate treats away as gifts and began selling chocolates at craft fairs, school or church festivals and corporate sites, all while keeping her full-time job. Corporate orders soon followed. "I was completely hooked after attending the Chocolate Convention at Valley Forge Convention Center and I've been perfecting my craft ever since," she adds.

She officially opened her store in October 2019.

Her line of delectable chocolate confections now feature a range of items, including chocolate-covered pretzels, Oreos, graham crackers, drizzled caramel popcorn, marshmallows, pistachio bark bars, sea salt caramel cashews, peanut butter cups, praline pecans, Twizzlers licorice, gummy bears, potato chips, ginger slices, coconut clusters, sponge candy, coffee beans, orange peel strips and mango slices. There also are some sugar-free options.

According to Valentine's Day consumer insights, Americans who celebrate V-Day purchase about 58 million pounds of chocolate a year. Lily says the chocolate liquor bottles kit has become a popular Valentine's Day gift.

"Anyone is welcome to request specific chocolates for made-to-order gift trays," she adds.

Lily's Chocolate Paradise store at 295 Buck Road within Pheasant Valley Center #309 in Holland is open seven days a week, Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shipping of items is available at the store via USPS Priority Mail.

Sweet P Boutique Besties Turned Business Partners To Launch New Shop For Trendy Clothing And Accessories ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Leah Creter and Maria Finley have a message for fellow shopaholics: It’s perfectly fine to live and breathe shopping. In fact, they are personally inviting other women to visit their brand-new boutique in Newtown so they can get equally enthused about clothing, jewelry and accessories with them.

“Our dream turned into reality from our small apartment in Conshohocken,” explains Leah.

Maria says they met in college through the sorority Zeta Tau Alpha, and became fast friends. After graduating, the two besties from Jersey decided to rent an apartment together, and then started an online

store to offer affordable and trendy clothing to young women. Together, they opened a physical boutique just in time for Christmas shopping. “This has been an absolute dream creating something we love,” she adds. “And we’re constantly getting in new items.”

Their new store, located in Village at Newtown, was named after the women’s two sweet rescue dogs, Penelope and Polly. Penelope is a rescued canine consisting of nine breeds, and Polly, also a rescue, is a Labrador/Great Dane combo. “We wanted a meaningful name to help bring our vision and brand to life,” says Leah.

Their clothing collection includes tops, bottoms, jackets, sets and dresses. Tops range from satin, turtlenecks, crops and bodysuits to tanks, sweatshirts and long sleeves. They also offer vests and shrug sweaters.

Bottoms include joggers, sweater pants, ribbed pants and leather slacks.

Sweet P cozy jackets are far-ranging, providing those that are cropped, flannel, plaid, extra soft cardigans and quilted, including puffers.

Dresses come in one piece, twopiece sets or cut-outs, along with rompers. Accessories especially spotlight belts, such as ‘You’re A Stud’ and ‘Solid GG.’ These new business owners already are doing philanthropic work by donating a portion of certain sales proceeds to breast cancer education and awareness through the American Cancer Society.

Maria and Leah remind that Sweet P Boutique gift cards make thoughtful Valentine’s Day gifts. They also have 5-ounce candles in four different scents and 12-ounce candles in three different scents. Additionally, thier fluffy-soft blankets and fuzzy slippers could make great V-Day gifts.

The two say they have scheduled a special lingerie vendor at the store on Feb. 11 to host a girls night out red and pink themed event, complete with fun pajamas as well. They also promise there will be exciting giveaways.

CREATING SMILES THROUGH HELIUM BUCKS COUNTY BALLOONS An optimistic proverb, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” made its way into the world of modern-day balloons. Jessica Heisen, founder of Bucks County Balloons, faced layers of lemon-like adversity in the past, which drove her to create and build this unique, thriving business.

Jessica is an artistic woman who was hustling in various endeavors, all of which had creative twists to them. Her last business was on the selling site Etsy, where she marketed confetti, cake toppers and other party accessories; this would become the pathway to her current venture.

When Jessica’s father passed away, to celebrate his life, she got her creative juices flowing and created a large balloon bouquet to display at his services. She perfected the art by practicing when family and friends needed party balloons. These beautiful displays didn’t go unnoticed, and prompted her to create a business. Jessica turned a somber situation into her future.

Balloons commonly were used as side or trimming when prepping a house or event space for a party. Recently, balloons are taking center stage, and becoming the focal point of party decorations. This is partly thanks to people, such as Jessica, who had the vision and drive to grow this party sector.

In the summer of 2021, Hurricane Ida hit the area and Jessica pretty hard. She lost

her house and car in the storm, leaving her with no place to work out of or vehicle from which to deliver. Continuing along the lemonade theme, she created a studio in her mom’s basement, allowing mother and daughter to spend more time together. By happenstance, she came across a perfect-sized, used van that complemented her newly fired-up business: “Bucks County Balloons."

Jessica is committed to creating new and exciting collections for every season. One of her mainstays is the “Pop Me” balloon in which any themed objects such as candy, confetti, or even a T-Rex, can be placed in a large clear balloon. It’s the present-day pinata and a unique party favorite. It’s also likely where her business slogan, “Life is Short, Pop More Balloons!” was originated.

She also specializes in large background balloon installations, which are best served as a photo backdrop or a dramatic display at entry and key points of a party location. She says she can design a balloon bouquet for any occasion, fusing a customer’s request along with her creative and artistic mind. She also can provide fringe party backdrops, custom confetti, birthday banners and cake toppers.

"We can do fantastic, colorful displays to spruce up any affair," says Jessica.

Though flowers typically dominate Valentine’s Day as presents, balloons are on a fast track to popularity in the holiday gift CONTINUED >

giving. Jessica says she designs many cupid-themed bouquets that can be delivered in Bucks County and the surrounding areas. "For those looking for that unique and loving Valentine’s gift, placing an order at least a week before the holiday is recommended," she adds.

As a hard-working business owner who does it all, when one sees Jessica’s van, it’s likely her making the delivery. Balloons have become more than a full-time job, and building a hobby into a successful business is something of which Jessica notes her father would be very proud.
