always love summer. Here we are approaching celebrating our nation's birthday on July 4th and all that entails–family gatherings, barbecues, picnics, fireworks. You know that whatever the weather, summer is really here!

This summer, our community is celebrating the 50th birthday of one of our community icons–Sherman Library and Gardens. The history of the community mainstay is fascinating. To think that if Moses H. Sherman had not hired a very young Arnold Haskell as his personal secretary and left him his entire business holdings when he passed away, we might never have enjoyed the beautiful botanical gardens and research library in our midst. Haskell lovingly created it, and here it stands today for our enjoyment.

Another mainstay celebrating an amazing 85 years this summer is the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show in Laguna Beach. Dubbed one of the Top Five Art Festival's in the Nation by USA Today, it's 85th season, beginning July 7th and continuing through August 31st, offers a juried art exhibition of 140 artists in all mediums along with a plethora of workshops and classes that attracts all ages. And, don't miss the "Concerts on the Green" on Saturday nights that showcases name artists.

You also won't want to miss two exhibitions which are honoring the Duke this summer.

Celebrating John Wayne's 110th birthday, the exhibitions run through to Labor Day weekend, so visit the Balboa Island Museum for an exhibit titled, "John Wayne–At Home in SoCal, 1920-1979" and make plans to see the exhibit at the Newport Beach Public Library titled, "John Wayne–On the Set with the Duke." Wayne is buried here in Newport Beach at Pacific View, so he will forever be with us!

If jazz is to your liking, the Eight Annual "Sunset Jazz at Newport" summer series begins July 12th through to September 20th at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa. The artist lineup is impressive!

Home Sweet Home CHEF RICHARD MEAD MAKES HIS SPLASHY RETURN TO NEWPORT BEACH WITH FARMHOUSE AT ROGER'S GARDENS

T

he cicadas’ song echoes through the trees that dot the grounds surrounding Farmhouse at Roger’s Gardens. Perched above the

winding paths lined with lush plants, colorful flowers and stone foun-

tains, sits a wooden restaurant helmed by chef Richard Mead. For locals, the name should be familiar. Chef Mead owned two celebrated eateries called Sage–one in Newport Beach and the other in Crystal Cove, which shuttered in 2012. At the time, Mead’s farm-to-table approach to food was innovative and refreshing. His dishes tasted fresh and seasonal and celebrated flavors that, at the time, you could only find in northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Flash-forward to today and this style of dining is quite en vogue. It seems that almost every restaurant now touts a “farm-to-table” part of the menu.

After Sage and before opening Farmhouse, Mead has been elevating the craft of cooking by not only educating diners with private dinners and culinary demonstrations but by reenvisioning the spaces in which we dine. Mead enlisted Ken Ussenko Designs for the construction of Farmhouse. Together they envisioned a building that feels rustic albeit modern. The space actually looks like a quaint farmhouse drawn from a Thomas Kinkade painting. Sliding barn doors, patina-hued light fixtures and silver goblets filled with

wildflowers, sage and lavender decorate the tables and fill the bar area with the essence of spring.

Just months before the restaurant opened, chef Mead joined a group of select artisans to celebrate The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano. The guest of honor that evening was the goddess of locavore cuisine and farm-totable dining, Alice Waters of Chez Panisse in Berkeley. Mead took the time out of his busy schedule to cook for a legend. The experience must have ignited his passion for California flavors.

At Farmhouse, steamed Prince Edward Island mussels with butter, garlic and fresh parsley create the perfect communal meal. At lunch, a group of four ladies, including myself, are huddled around the dish. We take turns sopping up slices of grilled bread in the briny broth. Each toasted bite is flavored with white wine and shallots. It reminds me of a Parisian bistro. As we sit outside underneath the shaded patio, a breeze blows through the trees and flitters the sun’s rays. A platter of grilled vegetables arrive at the table. Then, a juicy RG burger with butter lettuce, thick sliced tomato, feta cheese and creamy California avocado. We order a few salads to share–an Asian chicken salad 2.0 with savoy cabbage, Persian cucumbers, baby bok choy, and kumquats, dressed with sesame vinaigrette, and a seared albacore tuna and Asian noodle salad with English pea puree, picked watermelon radishes and crispy wonton chips.

I have since met friends at Farmhouse just for dessert on numerous afternoons. The Mason jars feature small tastes of comforting sweets, such as the sweet vanilla bean pot de crème with lemon thyme shortbread, strawberry panna cotta with orange curd and toasted pistachios, or the cozy carrot cake with traditional cream cheese icing and candied nuts. Homemade ice creams delight, especially when plated on top of delectable strawberry shortcake or the Windrose Farms apple crisp.

Dinners feature Mead’s love for fresh seafood. A panko-crusted Icelandic cod, grilled apple cider molasses glazed swordfish and pappardelle pasta tossed with succulent sea scallops, shrimp and juicy mussels. Other dishes include herb roasted Jidori chicken and grilled rib eye with roasted peewee

F

or Festival of Arts’ Board President Fred Sattler to recall his first memory of the

Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach isn’t difficult.

“Summer of 1965,” Sattler says wistfully. His then fiancé, now wife, was a Laguna Beach resident at the time.

“She took me to the Festival,” Sattler recalls, “and I’ve always remembered it.”

Taking place each summer over an eightweek period, the Festival of Arts presents a professionally juried art exhibition of 140 artists from all mediums–paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, glass, furniture and jewelry– amid the backdrop of the Laguna Beach coastline. The exceptionally vetted show consistently turns out the highest quality of work and was recently counted as one of the Top Five Art Festivals in the Nation by USA Today readers and listed as the Best Place to Buy Original Art by the Orange County Register.

So, when Sattler and his wife returned to Laguna Beach for good 20 years ago, he took advantage of the opportunity to run for the board of the festival. Today, he is the board president of one California’s most renowned outdoor summer festivals.

Besides weekly events, special one-day-only happenings are scheduled as well, like “Family Art Day” on Sunday, July 16, and the “Festival Runway Fashion Show” on Saturday, August 12.

This year the festival will also debut a much anticipated renovation in a newly redone facility that looks quite different from the one Sattler first encountered in the mid-1960s.

“This isn’t like we touched up the paint,” Sattler says of the festival grounds’ complete renovation. “We leveled the ground.”

The grounds improvement project was originally approved by the Laguna Beach City Council in July, 2015, but, weather conditions prevented the project from proceeding. A construction crew worked diligently to complete the overhaul of the facility in time for this year’s festival. This July, the Festival of Arts will introduce a completely remodeled $10 million facility. This is the first remodel of the grounds since 1964 (a year before Sattler’s first visit). The new layout meets accessibility standards and features updated restrooms and wider pathways.

“It has been brought up to ADA compliance so that people can walk the grounds comfortably,” Sattler says. “And, there is a new place for art education and for seating.”

Other changes include brand new tensile roof pavilions to protect artwork from weather elements, and the green lawn has been relo-

cated closer to the entry. The gift shop has moved and expanded, and the junior art exhibit enjoys a new home near the entrance.

“It’s really a completely new and renovated space that must be seen and experienced,” Sattler says. “Words don’t do it justice.”

To commemorate it’s 85th year, the Festival will host a birthday bash on August 13, complete with birthday cake and free admission to the art show for the entire day. The festival also has plans to honor elements of Laguna Beach’s earliest festivals with a new series titled, “A Salute to the Arts,” on Sunday afternoons. In the way the original festivals highlighted art in its many forms, the series will spotlight a different art element from theater and literature to dance each week.

The festival has a long history and many memories to celebrate, but for Sattler, there is one thing that remains most memorable.

“Watching the enjoyment that people get from it, “ he says, “from the patrons that come back year after year to our staff…it’s great to be able to showcase the arts.”

By the 1920s, “living pictures” made it to Laguna Beach. The first performance, titled “Spirit of the Masters Pageant,” took place at the second Festival of Arts in 1933. It also showcases heliconias, gingers and an inviting koi pond and waterfall. The Rose Garden features coastal roses, while the Japanese Garden includes a bo tree and a 200-year-old ceramic container from China. The Library is a historical research library specializing in the history of the Pacific Southwest. The collections document the development of the region through books, archival collections, photographs, maps, aerial photographs and newspapers. Sherman Library is also the home to a collection of California impressionist art, including works

by William Wendt, and others. The book collections encompass more than 15,000 volumes, including the papers of M. H. Sherman, and it boasts a significant collection of materials relating to Newport Beach.
