JANUARY 2017
2017 is going to be a great year! The taste of roast turkey, prime rib, mashed potatoes and gravy, Christmas carols, and bonus family time are now distant memories. Where I grew up, people are settling in for a long winter’s nap, but this is southern California… the land of sun and sand. It seems that it is always sunny and warm for the Rose Bowl parade and the beaches and parks are full of people walking, biking, relaxing, or recovering from their New Year’s Eve celebrations. January is a great time to take an inventory of ourselves, our families, our businesses, and our lives in general. We reflect upon past decisions to help us make better choices. Fitness and health become more of a focus for many. It could be that the American custom of gorging ourselves during the holidays has something to do with that, or it could be that many want to start some new healthy habits. The planning and setting of goals each year is also commonplace during January. It seems as if an invisible reminder pops up after the 1st, and speaks to us about what we want to accomplish and within what time frame. I find myself doing that regularly every year. It brings new hope for possibilities and outcomes we imagine and dream about.

As I reflect on 2016, I think back on all the blessings in my life. I also think about one of the very sad things that my team and I encountered while working with the OC Food Bank during our magazine’s Third-Year Anniversary Celebration. We learned that the number of families being fed by the OC Food Bank every month is more than 100,000. We were shocked, and it became immediately apparent that we needed to help more of those in need. Our goal in 2017 is to raise awareness about the problems we face in Orange County, by giving a voice to organizations like the OC Food Bank and others that fight endlessly for humanitarian causes to provide for hundreds of thousands of Orange County citizens. As we begin 2017, join us in some very important reflection and planning for the year. Think about the blessings in your life, and then plan on how you can unite with us to help those that are less fortunate. As William James, the Father of American psychology once said, “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.”

t was a special moment when the Heroes Hall veterans museum was dedicated with a ceremony and ribbon cutting on Veterans Day at the OC Fair & Event Center (OCFEC) in Costa Mesa for 500 attendees. Special dignitaries, veterans groups and veterans and their families attended the free event, including Vincent Okamoto, the most decorated Japanese American veteran of the Vietnam War. Approved by the OCFEC Board of Directors in 2014, Heroes Hall will encompass more than 12,000 square feet with indoor/outdoor exhibit space. Crews broke ground last March and the former “Memorial Gardens,� a two-story, 5,000 square foot WW II-era building, was placed on the site in April to house exhibitions. Crews have worked diligently on the building and the surrounding courtyard, which includes a 50-foot-wide centerpiece designed after the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military decoration

Heroes Hall, when it is completed in February, 2017, will be a permanent, yearround museum with exhibitions, performances and educational programs that celebrate the legacy of Orange County veterans and others who have served our great nation. THE SAAAB STORY The OC Fair & Event Center sits on land that was once part of the Santa Ana Army Air Base during World War II. This second-floor exhibit will tell the story of veterans, former SAAAB residents and celebrities Joe DiMaggio, Gene Autry, Joseph Heller and
Don the Beachcomber, in addition to special units that were active on the station or were significant during the war, including the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, Chinese National Air Force Detachment, Tuskegee Airmen, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Navajo Code Talkers. “THE THINGS THEY CARRIED” Based on and named for the book by Tim O’Brien, the first-floor exhibit will feature stories about Vietnam War veterans as told through text, photography, film, audio, digital media, art and personal items. Additional narratives and objects will be included from Orange County veterans from World War II up to current military involvement in the Middle East. Approximately 100,000 school children will tour the museum each year. The purpose of their visits will be to teach them the most important lesson of their lifetime–"Freedom Isn’t Free.” In addition to the school children, more than one million visitors are expected to the museum every year. The Heroes Hall Veterans Foundation, a 501©3 non-profit, provides fundraising support for exhibitions, education, programs and operation. The company’s seafood distribution center in nearby Santa Ana keeps each of King’s restaurants stocked with the freshest sustainable fish and shellfish. The raw bar frequently rotates its oyster offerings. The night we dined, my husband, who prefers large, meaty specimens such as briny Pacific oysters, was instructed to order Naked Cowgirls from New York. My favorites: Malpeque from Prince Edward Island and delicate Beausoleils harvested from Nova Scotia were also available. “On an average evening, the raw bar might offer between eighteen to twenty different types of oysters,” says King. The raw bar does impress, but for most diners, the real show is the open kitchen. Designed after the culinary shrine at the Waldorf Astoria, the cooking ranges and ovens at Water Grill are constructed with the highest efficiency in mind. It is a serious kitchen–meant to feed a lot of people. This makes perfect sense since the location is intended to serve several diners in quick bursts. There are luncheon meetings during the week, early preshow dinners and late, late night bites, thanks to the crowds visiting the nearby theaters. And, let us not forget brunch on the weekend. This means that the kitchen relies on effi-

ou probably have already heard about hydrogen cars, fuel cells, electrolyzers and so forth. You even have probably seen some hydrogen pumping stations around. What all this jargon entails is a whole new world of possibilities in becoming carbon emissions free and fossil fuel independent.

The company that has more cars on the road and is doing the greatest effort to promote its fuel cell cars in California is Toyota. It has a track record for disrupting the market with innovation, so it has recently launched its first mass-market hydrogen car, the Mirai (US$57,500). This model’s name, whose meaning in Japanese is “future,” is fast becoming a powerful force in the battle for tomorrow’s roads. The Mirai sedan can drive 300 miles on a full tank and be refueled in about five minutes, instead of needing to be plugged in overnight, making it an easier fit for the typical commute. Think of the Mirai as a small power plant on wheels. Instead of drawing energy from a battery like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt, the all-electric Mirai makes its own. A hydrogen car consists of a non-vibrant silent electric motor that provides the same energy efficiency and response rate as any existent electric car. The fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat, and water. The oxygen comes from the surrounding air and the hydrogen from a storage tank within the car. When both elements combine, electricity, heat and water are generated. The electricity is used to feed the motor, and the only byproduct is water mist expelled through the exhaust pipe. As any other fuel, hydrogen must be produced, stored and delivered to the fuel station and then dispensed. Nowadays, the most common source of hydrogen generation is from oil or gas processes, although there are other greener alternatives, such as the use of electrolyzers that split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen with zero emissions. In Orange County, so far, we have eight hydrogen stations located at UC Irvine, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Lake Forest, San Juan Capistrano, Orange and Anaheim. Furthermore, Newport Beach is becoming a hub for the development of this innovative technology. Companies such as H2B2 have chosen Newport Beach as its headquarters. The company, with more than 15 years experience, has 20 engineers and professionals specializing in the manufacturing of PEM electrolyzers that can start or stop the production of hydrogen in a matter of seconds. This peculiarity makes them unique and ideal for the integration with other renewable energy sources. Today, Toyota offers reasonable lease options and great “green” tax rebates for the Mirai. For example, one of the incentives includes a three-year supply of hydrogen up to a maximum of $15,000, to compensate for the current high price of hydrogen. The price is coming down steadily, and soon there will be many hydrogen cars on our roads due to the abundance of hydrogen fuel. Will you be driving one of them? n 2015, Peter and Ginny Ueberroth donated $5 Million to Hoag Hospital Foundation to establish an endowed chair in women’s health in honor of Dr. Allyson Brooks and her long-time dedication to providing innovative and personalized care for women. Dr. Brooks is the Executive Medical Director of The Women’s Health Institute, Chief Quality Officer at Hoag Hospital, and the Ginny Ueberroth Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair of the Women’s Health Institute at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Womanology and Restore Him are the result of her initial pioneering vision of creating a women’s health and wellness center. The doctor’s great inspiration consisted of creating a one-stop location for women to receive services and care within the best environment for possible healing. The center in Newport Beach opened its doors in the Spring of 2016 and is an environment with the highest clinical quality and excellence that is also welcoming, relaxing and comforting. It is dedicated to women of all ages and features several physical therapy treatments and counseling rooms, a Pilates studio, as well as an activity room. Salpi Salibian, MS PA-C, joined Hoag Hospital in 2015 as Director of Clinical Operations and Program Development for women’s outpatient health and wellness. For many years, she had been treating women with pelvic disorders, realizing the huge impact that those disorders cause in the quality of womens’ lives. The pelvic region can easily be irritated or damaged by many different causes, such as childbirth, hormonal changes, bladder problems, chronic pain disorders, back problems, cancer or even emotional trauma. The center not only offers these therapies to women, but through Restore Him, these therapies are also available to men. The most common symptoms treated are bladder and bowel disorders, cancer or sexually related issues. In addition, the center offers a wellness approach to care by integrating other alternative solutions such as massage therapy, acupuncture, Pilates, or yoga, thus improving the overall condition of the patient and their quality of life. A patient can expect to receive care in the form of: • Guided Therapy • Massage Therapy. • Acupuncture for patients with conditions, such as interstitial cystitis, painful intercourse, IBS and fibromyalgia. • Pilates exercise to help pelvic and spinal rehabilitation. Patients can choose to attend a private session or a group. Pilates also helps with Post Natal training, breast cancer and reconstruction, and pelvic floor dysfunctions. The center also organizes classes and workshops on pain, fitness, meditation, sexual health, pregnancy, Pilates and yoga.

O
ne in 10 Orange County residents are unsure of when or where they’ll get their next meal. Many of them are children, sent to school with less than lunch. Some of them are mothers or fathers who sacrifice food and meals for their children. Some of them are seniors who cannot physically get to the grocery store. One in 10: it’s a troubling statistic, considering Orange County’s seemingly widespread affluence. CANstruction Orange County is working hard to address the issue of food insecurity. This unique nonprofit organization brings together an abundance of creative minds, from established architectural, design, engineering and planning firms to the students shadowing these professionals. In teams, they are challenged to design and build life-size, Lego-like structures entirely out of canned goods. Placed throughout South Coast Plaza, these innovative creations raise hunger awareness during the month of September. After judging, the creations are dismantled, and all the canned food is donated to the OC Food Bank. From there, the food is distributed to shelters, soup kitchens and other local emergency feeding programs. The Ninth Annual CANstruction Orange County Design/Build Competition took place this past September. After months of planning and designing their masterpieces, teams were allotted just one night to 50

bring their 2-D ideas to life. After a grueling 12 hours of carefully stacking and color-coordinating cans, a panel of judges decided on winners. “Best Meal” went to Architects Orange, with “CANifornia Burrito” depicting a healthy burrito. Little Diversified Architecture won “Structural Ingenuity” with their ingenious “Can FÜD Panda, Fighting the Forces of Hunger.” Lovable Po from Kung Fu Panda was depicted. “Best Use of Labels” went to FLUOR’s “Hunger Out!” Their impressive sculpture depicted Kobe Bryant and a black mamba snake. And, incredibly, “Most Cans,” “Jury’s Favorite” and the “People’s Choice” went to Jeffrey Rome & Associates for their sculpture titled "Celebrate Life On A Full Stomach!" A total of nearly 11,000 cans depicted the whimsical character La Muerte from The Book of Life. In partnership with South Coast Plaza, OC Food Bank, the City of Anaheim, Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, and Festival of Children, CANstruction Orange County’s competition was immensely successful. A whopping 72,800 cans were donated to the OC Food Bank. Those cans will provide hundreds of thousands of meals to impoverished Orange County residents. In partnership with OC Food Bank, CANstruction is getting closer and closer to ending hunger, one can at a time.
