JULY 2016 publisher

ummer is here! We were celebrating Christmas just six months ago, and now we're gearing up for summer and all it brings. For some, it means planting a vegetable garden, or if you're not an urban farmer, you are looking forward to enjoying the wonderful produce this time of year offers. The Manassero family has been farming in Orange County since 1922, with Dan Manassero, grandson of founder James Manassero, carrying on the family's farming legacy through The Original Manassero Farms that he launched 40 years ago. With his wife and partner Anne, the couple works hard to provide the best in certified organic and conventional crops, plus offering the public the Manassero Farms Market in Irvine, a one-of-kind event space, produce market and gift shop. Also, along with our green theme is our story on Urban Produce's High Density Vertical Farming, which offers an efficient, sustainable alternative to traditional agriculture, harnessing the latest hydroponic technologies in a controlled environment. Our story on UCI's Vital Link Energy Invitational and Race4Your Future Car Show tells us how students are encouraged to create a performance engineering car model with the criteria based on how far and how fast the car can go in one hour and on $1 worth of energy, i.e. compressed gas, electric, solar, gasoline, etc. Since July 4th is upon us, enjoy our feature story on your star spangled options to celebrate our nation's founding, and I know you will appreciate our story on the City of Newport Beach officially adopting the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines Combat Unit based at Camp Pendleton in 2003. Assisting the troops and their families with emergency needs, community programs and social activities has established lasting friendships. And, if you're thinking of taking a trip to our nation's capital, our travel story on Washington, D.C. will give you some good pointers. As to summer entertainment, the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters, both around for 80-plus years, are always a treat. And, if you looking for hidden gems to explore in the area this summer, Deirdre Michalski’s Parting Thoughts column offers some fun options. In closing, enjoy your fresh vegetables, celebrating July 4th, Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters, and exploring your favorite spots in this lovely paradise we call home. URBAN PRODUCE, HIGH DENSITY VERTICAL FARMING ARTICLE ANA LAUNES

S

eventy-five million babies are born worldwide each year. While these sweet newborns must bring joy and light to their families’ lives, their hungry mouths require us to reevaluate how we grow our food. Population growth is not the only concern for farmers and consumers. Climate change, dwindling natural resources and scarce availability of land all put pressure on the global demand for crops. The Urban Produce High Density Vertical Growing System, also known as Skywell, offers an efficient, sustainable alternative to traditional agriculture, harnessing the latest hydroponic technologies in a controlled environment. Ed Horton, president and CEO of Urban Produce, LLC, formed the company in October of 2013 in Irvine, California. He was first introduced to the concept by his close friend and current Mayor of El Paso, Texas, Oscar Leeser. Horton loved the concept so much that he purchased the patents from Leeser and tested them immediately at his hydroponic greenhouses in El Paso. Later, with the help of his botanist, the process was optimized and totally automated. According to Urban Produce’s Marketing Director, Danielle Horton, today the facility contains a dry cleaning conveyor with 354 carriers of 25 vertical rows. The warehouse sits on approximately one-eighth of an acre, and thanks

to its modular system, the company can grow 16 acres of product in that space. The company is a specialty grower, producing a total of 28 varieties, with a focus on organic micro-greens, organic leafy greens and wheatgrass. Danielle tells us that in Southern California, the concept could have been easier to implement in a greenhouse, but instead, a warehouse with supplemental lighting was chosen. The reason was to demonstrate that the concept could be applied in any location around the world, independent of its climate. Indoor growing implies no bugs, deeming pesticides or other chemicals unnecessary. The lighting utilized throughout the warehouse is provided by third-generation Philips LED. These lights deliver the proper light spectrum to the plants. Tailormade light recipes mean faster growth, bigger harvests and higher quality plants. When a plant grows outdoors, it has CONTINUED >

to transform the sunlight into specific usable wavelengths, but when growing indoors, the perfect light recipe can be provided. Urban’s produce does not grow in soil but in an organic substrate made onsite, consisting of a proprietary blend of different materials. Soil has naturally good and bad matter, but at Urban Produce, each plant type receives its own customized recipe. Finally, state-of-the-art software ensures each type of produce is attentively cared for, keeping lighting and watering schedules on point. Just recently, the facility was USDA organic certified, and the next immediate goal to increase sustainability would be getting off the grid. In addition, the company wants to start a nonprofit foundation to take the edgy technology to third world countries and teach communities to be sustainable by growing their own foods. Currently, Urban Produce utilizes its own filtered water system, or atmospheric water generation (AWG), which consists of extracting the humidity from the air and transforming it into water. Through this process, the company obtains around 100 gallons of water per day. Due to the automated systems utilized, the plants receive the exact amount of water, and there is no runoff or excess usage. Consequently, the facility utilizes 93% less water than an average farm. The company has a strong opinion about providing the market with nutrient dense foods. Traditionally, once a product is cut, deterioration and loss of nutrients begins. To avoid the problem, clients are provided with a tray of live product to be cut and used as needed. Urban Produce is currently operating at 20% capacity. The company uses a “zero stock ” system, or as Danielle mentioned, “grow on demand,” consisting of no inventory and consequently no leftovers. The company’s main focus is business-to-business and supplies distributors and food service companies, such as Fresh Point and West Central Produce, and supermarkets, such as Vons, Pavilions and Albertsons. 20

’m in a line that snakes along a sloping brick sidewalk. It’s crammed with millennials snapping selfies, families jostling for space and locals looking for a different kind of happy hour. My nine-year-old daughter Maxine and I have joined the throngs outside Georgetown Cupcake (known to TV fans as DC Cupcake). Maxine, a die-hard fan of the show, has convinced me that this is a good use of our time while visiting Washington, D.C. And, once we actually get our cupcakes in hand–delicate sweetness topped with perfect icing and fondant f lowers–and catch a sighting of two of the TV show’s stars–she is proven right. We hole up in Georgetown because it’s a neighborhood where real Washingtonians live and work. Its storied history that includes George Washington, JFK and Katharine Graham of the Washington Post infuse the quaint lanes and bustling avenues with a patrician grace. Newport Beach Lifestyle | Juy 2016

2

Our first night, we spend at the Four Seasons Hotel, which happens to be one of Washington’s poshest stays; yes, but also one of its most comfortable. I linger in the lobby to study museum-worthy pieces created by artists like Warhol and Botero. In the afternoon, we descend on the saltwater lap pool. Afterwards, I sauna and steam. In the morning, I breakfast at Seasons and so should you, whether you stay at the hotel or not. The breakfast menu reflects its worldly guests, spanning the globe from the Americas to Middle East to Asia. The added benefit is the chance to eavesdrop on international leaders who gather here religiously for power breakfasts. Washington, D.C. is not only the U.S. capital, but also the repository of some of the country’s greatest treasures, which can be accessed among the city’s plethora of admission-free museums, which tax dollars support.

6

On our first day, we visit The National Portrait Gallery, one of my all-time favorite museums, where we beeline to the president’s portrait room, which features a cracked-plate photo of Abe Lincoln and a kaleidoscopic painting of Bill Clinton created by Chuck Close. We also pop into the National Museum of the American Indian, where we discover what just may be the best museum food court in the country because it reflects the cuisine of many indigenous people, with offerings like 3 smoked bison loin, sorrel-baked oyster and cedar-plank salmon dressed with maple syrup. Although we walk by the White House and pause outside the gates, we don’t get to do a White house tour, as those must be arranged in advance (typically three months or more) by a U.S. Senator. We stroll along the National Mall, circle the 4 Washington Monument and climb the steps to the Lincoln Memorial, the site of Martin Luther King’s “I Have Dream Speech.” Afterwards, we head back to Georgetown, which, after touring the width and breath of downtown D.C., feels intimate and welcoming. Maxine and I grab a quick dinner next door to the Four Seasons at Eno, a boîte that’s dedicated to cheese and wine. I order a dry red made in Greece and Maxine orders an artisanal soda. The next day we head to the Newseum, a temple of all things media. Maxine films a news piece on the Berlin Wall in the studio. We watch a loop of 5

political humor from late night TV talk shows, and we study photos taken by journalists of Civil Rights workers marching in Selma. Next door, we pause for brunch at The Source, a Wolfgang Puck restaurant that elevates the art of dim sum. This is considered one of the city’s best restaurants and for good reason. We order eight courses of delectable bites, like lacquered duck bao buns, brisket wontons and sweet turnip mini cakes glazed with sweet soy. Afterwards, we walk a few blocks to the International Spy Museum, where we assume false identities as we practice decoding World War II messages, admire a carrier pigeon, 7 learn about Mata Hari’s spying misadventures, and ogle James Bond’s Aston Martin driven in Goldfinger. That night, we take refuge at Avenue Suites, an afford, able all-apartments hotel just across the bridge from Georgetown. Our suite has a kitchen, living room and roomy bedroom, giving us the feeling of having our own abode in the city. A Trader Joe’s across the street means we stock up for breakfast and dip into local life. Before checking out the next morning, we jot down an agenda to attack the next time we’re in the city, which includes visiting the National Air & Space Museum, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, along with a boat ride up the Potomac. And, at the very top of the list? Of course, another visit to Georgetown Cupcakes. After all, there are so many more f lavors to sample.

Washington, D.C. is not only the U.S. capital, but also the repository of some of the country’s greatest treasures which can be accessed among the city’s plethora of admission-free museums.

A FARMING LEGACY (CON TI N U ED)

The Barn set for an event at The Original Manassero Farms in Irvine

“It has brought people in who didn’t know about us and has helped the bottom line tremendously,” Dan says. “Pascal has been an integral part of the success of this entire venture,” Anne adds. Dan is pleased that the emphasis these days is on healthy eating. “Our goal is to be as organic as we can with all the crops,” Dan says. “The events have worked out well for us with people wanting to eat organic and more healthy,” he says. Texas loving Anne convinced Dan to begin planting the organically grown Texas 1015 onions, so named as that is when they are typically planted in Texas. “They’re an awesome large, sweet onion,” she says. “I like them because they’re not as sweet as the Vidalias and Mauis, so you can use them in any application, and they still caramelize like a regular onion. You can even eat them raw.” As to the business end of Manassero Farms, the two say it isn’t easy. Over the years, they have seen first-hand the influence of government regulations, labor resources, trade, large commercial growers, and big box stores that have changed the face of urban farming. Dan says that all the farmers in Orange County lease the land. “We can’t afford to pay $4 million an acre,” he says. With that being said, the successful farming duo feels blessed that things have come together in such a winning way at their newest Manassero Farms Market location in Irvine. It definitely helped that they were both business majors in college-Dan at Fullerton Junior College and Anne at the University of Phoenix. Their children from previous marriages are no slouches, either, although no one is in farming. Dan’s son Jeff, 32, is a principal at Clear Light Partners, and Samantha, 30, and Carly, 28, are both nurses at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Anne’s daughter Laurel, 26, is in law school at South Texas College of Law in Houston. As part of an Orange County third generation farming family, nearly 100 years old, Dan is fine with his kids wanting a different path. “All of our kids are headstrong, smart, and know what they want out of life and hard-working enough to make their own goals a reality,” Dan says. “Nothing could make a dad more proud.” It does seem that Dan always knew he wanted to be a farmer. “My grandmother told me I needed to be a doctor,” he

laughs, “and I told her, ‘No, I think I’ll be a farmer.’” As to retiring, Dan’s pretty clear. “I love to golf and travel, but I plan on doing this the rest of my life.”

Support efforts go well beyond making any form of political statement, and the Marines know and appreciate it. On a personal note, our family has had the pleasure of hosting anywhere from two-to-six 1/1 Marines from Camp Pendleton in our home over the years for various holidays, such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. for Celebrating Our American Independence

ARTICLE LYNN SELICH

T

here’s certainly no lack of fun to be had in Newport Beach on Independence Day, or what is more frequently referenced as the 4th of July. However, before we start talking star-spangled fun, a primer on the history of our great country’s history is in order, especially after recently watching a beloved news personality conduct man-on-thestreet interviews, only to find that there are a lot of folks out there who love 4th of July hotdogs and fireworks, but are a little fuzzy on the reason behind all the celebrating. For the record, July 4th has been an annual federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations harkens back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-1783). In June, 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle deliberated a bold resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later, its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson. It was to become one of the most famous historic documents in the world. On the date of its approval, July 4th was scrolled onto the fancy, handwritten copy (on display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.), which was actually signed that August. Nevertheless, when original printed copies of the Declaration were circulated throughout the new nation, July 4th remained the date on the document, and the rest is history. In reality, if we were to celebrate the actual date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we’d be donning red, white and blue each year on August 2nd. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. With that little bit of housekeeping done, let’s talk about the options for celebrating America’s independence around Newport Beach. 36

Topping the list is Independence Day on the Back Bay, a day of food and family-friendly entertainment at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina. From Noon to 10 p.m., kids and adults alike will enjoy a wide selection of activities and events, including live entertainment featuring KC & The Sunshine Band, food trucks, a Kids Corral with inflatable water attractions, craft stations, face painting, snow cones and water balloons. The day crescendos to a massive fireworks show, complete with patriotic musical fanfare. NewportDunes.com For all you boating enthusiasts in the audience, you’ll want to show your patriotism on the water, as you

cruise the harbor in red, white and blue. Decorate your craft, small or large, and join in the Old 4 Glory Boat Parade, which is California’s largest and one of the nation’s longest running patriotic boat parades. Sponsored by the American Legion Yacht Club and American Legion Post 291, the festivities kick-off with a pancake breakfast at the Legion hall, later followed by a BBQ lunch and dinner from Noon to 5 p.m., with live music and dancing from 1-5 p.m. The parade begins around 12:30 p.m. off Collins Island and continues around Newport Harbor, with more than 100 bedecked vessels participating. Watch the parade from any of the harbor’s public beaches, docks and boardwalks or waterfront restaurants. AL1291.com On the Balboa Peninsula, the 44th Annual Mariners Independence Day Parade & Celebration continues its long tradition of friend-and-fundraising for a great cause. Held in conjunction with Mariners Elementary School Foundation and the City of Newport Beach, the day begins with a fanciful bicycle parade down Mariners Drive. Back at Mariners Park, the community is invited to enjoy a slew of games, food, entertainment and attractions, with proceeds from the event going to support Mariners Elementary School. The event accounts for approximately 10% of the foundation’s annual funds, so join the fun, show your support and celebrate the 4th all at the same time! Community Festival on July 4th. Participants are encouraged to decorate bikes, scooters, wagons and strollers and to bring their dogs on leashes. The bike and dog parade begins at 9 a.m. at Balboa Blvd. & 38th Street Park and heads down Balboa Blvd. to Channel Place Park for a free festival, including carnival games, giant slides, jump houses, arts & crafts, and food for sale. Visit the Recreation and Senior Services Department at NewportBeachCA.gov/July4 Though portable barbecues are not allowed on any city beaches, there are fire rings and public barbecues available near the Balboa Pier and at Corona del Mar State Beach on

a first-come, first-served basis. NewportBeaches.gov As always, business, community and visitor safety is top priority during the 4th of July in Newport Beach. So, not to put a damper on the celebrations, in case you’re wondering, fireworks are most definitely not allowed. In Newport, it is illegal to possess or use fireworks, even the “safe and sane” versions like sparklers and fountains, which are available in nearby cities. Leave the pyrotechnics to the pros, please. It’s also handy to note that starting at approximately 10:30 a.m. on the 4th, the Newport Beach Police Department will be closing particular streets, including southbound Orange Street at West Coast Highway, as

well as Via Oporto, from Via Lido to 32nd Street. Street closures will remain in force until the early morning hours of the 5th. There will also be a “Safety Enhancement Zone” in the area, bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the south, 32nd Street and Newport Blvd. on the east, W. Coast Hwy. on the north, and 54th Street on the west. This zone designation is strictly effective from 12:01 a.m. on July 4th until 3 a.m. on July 5th. In addition to enhanced enforcement throughout the city, members of the Orange County Regional Mounted Unit will be on patrol to help ensure a safe holiday for all. A great way to keep up on street closures, crime alerts and other information is to sign up with Nixle. com to receive real time updates throughout the day. No matter how you celebrate the birth of our great nation, there’s plenty to do on land and sea here in Newport!

ARTICLE DONNA BUNCE | PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL OF ARTS

PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS

The Pageant of the Masters is the Festival of Arts’ crowning jewel and arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Each night during the summer season, a 90-minute stage show is presented of “living pictures,” which are incredibly faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant as the best presentation of its kind.

ith Festival of Arts celebrating 84 years this summer and Pageant of the Masters a year behind, we are witnessing an extraordinary art partnership right here in Orange County. For many of us, attending the Festival and Pageant at the beautiful Laguna Bowl on the Festival of Arts grounds in Laguna Beach is an annual pilgrimage, one we look forward to each summer with great anticipation. If, however, you are not familiar with them, here’s a short synopsis: FESTIVAL OF ARTS

The Festival of Arts is one of the nation’s oldest juried fine art shows, which showcases a plethora of renowned artists in a wide variety of media, such as paintings, photography, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, handcrafted wood and furniture, ceramics, glass, and more. USA Today readers tout it among the top five festivals in the nation. Offered during its run are demonstrations and art workshops, live music, daily art tours, special events, exhibitions of local student artwork, on-site restaurants, and more. It has proven to be a haven for art lovers and collectors, who love to browse and purchase art. 40

With the main focus on preparing students to be career ready, new focuses include valuable real world application, hands-on experiences and an expanded network of willing business mentors. Vital Link’s programs serve 47,000 students annually, representing 18% Orange County students. Opportunities are available to a whopping 87 middle schools, 65 high schools, nine community colleges, and growing. Vital Link doesn’t discriminate, as 40-60% of participants are low to moderate income, at-risk, or special education students. On May 21, 2016, Vital Link organized the UCI Energy Invitational and the Race 4 Your Future car show on UC Irvine’s campus. “The objective of the program is to bring real world experiences into the classroom, and to get students at high school level and university level to be better prepared to get into the workforce,” says Kathy Johnson, President/CEO of Vital Link. “School is traditionally about turning in a project, getting it graded, walking away, and you are done. This program is not like that. The students do a performance engineering model, and this model consists of actually building the project–tested, improved, tested and improved again and again until it is done.” The Race 4 Your Future program is six years old, and this year is its second time at UCI. During a time period of one year or more, students work under very specific criteria to create their performance engineering model, always under the supervision of a professor or teacher. The specific criteria consists of how far and how fast in one hour and on one-dollar worth of energy. The projects can be based in any type of energy–compressed gas, electric, solar, gasoline, etc. The only differentiator among the categories is the weight of the car: over 500 pounds or 500 pounds or less. The grade level of the student is irrelevant. Ed Hernandez, Director of The Technology & Engineering Academy and teacher at Tustin High School, shared some successful stories of the program. So far, out of this program, Tustin High School has placed five graduated students into the engineering programs at UC Berkley and one at Michigan State University. UCI Professor, J. Michael McCarthy, who teaches 3rd and 4th year engineering at UCI, says his efforts have been futile in trying to place students in the job market, 44

due to companies not hiring at entry level, but he is a believer in Vital Link. “It is not a fun project. It is real engineering, and so it is a real career experience, challenging students to learn to design, build, test and make a vehicle reliable. It also teaches the students how to work together and meet a schedule. The project is literally on-the-job training, because training like this at local companies does not exist anymore. Therefore, our students can now leave the university with a real experience in engineering and step right into the job opportunities.” Out of this program, UCI is graduating students with experience that the industry is

requiring but not recognizing. The alignment of UCI, the OC Department of Education and Vital Link represents the first initiative to adapt the educational system to the changes in the marketplace and to real industry demands. Every year, organizers struggle to economically sustain the program and ultimately it needs greater support from the industry. The program also has a very positive social impact, functioning as a preventative measure to keep kids out of trouble. They can focus on a specific task, along with career discovery and exploration. SUMMER IS here...

So let’s

ewport Beach offers 10 miles of pristine coastline, and is the quintessential place where I like to welcome summer with unabashed vigor. The June weddings and graduations seem a distant memory. I have replaced all that with bright sunshine, sparkling blue water and the excitement of a jam-packed calendar! Here are some activities that make me feel like I am somewhere far, far, away on a blissful vacation. And, somehow it works! This town is just glistening with natural hidden gems. The following are four of my favorite spots to visit during summer. CRYSTAL COVE–built as a movie set in the 1930’s, and all of the original cottages are still standing today. Twenty-one have been authentically restored. The Beachcomber Restaurant is just steps from the sand, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a full bar. Score! AMAZING TIDE POOLS–two well-known spots for exploring the wonders of the sea are found at the southern tide pools of Crystal Cove and Little Corona Beach at Corona del Mar State Beach (near Poppy Street). LOOKOUT POINT–this is the perfect vantage point to capture a glistening sunset, perched high above the water in Corona del Mar at Ocean Blvd. and Heliotrope Ave. BACK BAY MUTH INTERPRETIVE CENTER AND ESTUARY–this is a lovely educational facility built into the side of the bluffs overlooking the Back Bay, with 10 miles of walking/biking trails surrounding it. With so many “iconic” spots, it’s hard to pick, but here are five unique activities that are always on my summer list (especially escorting out-oftown guests). BALBOA ISLAND AND FERRY–established in the early 1900’s, this enthralling little village is home to a traditional main street (Marine Avenue). The now-famous ice cream Balboa Bar was invented here and has a perfect walking path for my dog Riley. And, who doesn’t like to ride a ferry? This one you can do by car, bike or on foot. The Ferry was established in 1919 and provides service between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula (with views of the Balboa Pavilion). DOCK AND DINE–we like to rent electric Duffy boats and cruise the harbor. We pull up dockside to any one of 12 different restaurants and call ahead with our “to-go” order to enjoy on-board. PADDLE BOARD NIGHT GLOW TOURS–Pirate Coast Paddle Company at Newport Dunes in the Back Bay has a very unique evening tour. The stand-up paddle boards have lights on them, so you can see the fish down below. Tours are offered Friday and Saturday nights all summer long. I book it online, and last year, I did a practice run during the daytime just to get my bearings. Great fun! PEDEGO ELECTRIC BIKE TOUR–Pedego Corona del Mar offers bikes for rent and guided tours. My favorite is the bike path along Crystal Cove overlooking the coast. HYATT REGENCY NEWPORT BEACH JAZZ FESTIVAL–I adore listening to jazz under the stars in an outdoor venue and, all summer long, the Hyatt has an impressive line-up. So there you have it! All my favorite summer haunts and hideaways here in town. Well, most of them. I have to save a few summer-time secrets, don’t I? Enjoy your summer. Let’s all get out there and explore!
