The start of a new year is often filled with excitement and a sense of renewal. It’s a time to set new goals, embrace fresh opportunities, and dream about the year ahead. For many, though, January can also bring a sense of pressure—a reminder of resolutions left unfulfilled or the weight of expectations. This issue of NBTX City Lifestyle was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health.

There are so many things in life that demand our attention. Personally, I have some absolutes I do daily. Then, there is everything else. I challenge you in 2026 to start a consistent routine that helps, not only with some time management to get what is needed done, but in turn alleviates some of the stress and guilt that comes with trying to do it all. I hope you can spend a little more time on yourself and your family's health this year. For me, meal prepping is the foundation to reducing the stress of the coming week, so I can have time to work out, work, spend time with my family, and not be so stressed. If there is one thing you can do to help set yourself up for success, then I encourage you to start this practice.

Life isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. Consider this: you wouldn’t go on vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal.

This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives.

It’s easy to ignore posture until it starts speaking up. The stiffness after hours at a desk. The dull ache after scrolling on a phone.

They’re all signs that modern life isn’t kind to the spine. For Dr. Corey Sorum of Lone Star Spine and Joint, those habits are the first place he looks when helping patients.

“People bring their head down to their phone. Bring your phone up to your face,” he says. It is one of the most common patterns he sees in both adults and kids.

EVERYDAY AWARENESS

For Dr. Corey, posture awareness starts with the little things.

How we hold our phones. How long we sit. What our kids see us do.

“Kids do what they see,” he says. “If they see you on your phone with your head down, that is what they will do.”

He wants people to notice the signs that their bodies are giving them. Even small changes make a difference. “Every little bit matters. Even five percent better is still better than nothing.”

Good posture is not about holding one perfect position all day.

It is about moving. “Most people are curved forward,” he says. “I joke that I do not want them shaped like a candy cane.” A small shift here and there adds up.

WORKDAY WELLNESS

That same awareness can change the flow of a workday. Dr. Corey often sends notes to workplaces to help patients get better desk setups. “I write letters to companies all the time,” he says. “They will change someone’s desk height, get them a standing desk, or provide an under-the-desk treadmill once they know it helps avoid pain and injuries, causing employees to miss work.”

He is a strong believer in switching positions instead of staying still. “Sit for an hour, stand for an hour, walk for an hour,” he says. “Change positions throughout the day.”

Movement helps more than posture alone. “When we sit for long periods, we are not squeezing our leg muscles, so blood flow slows down. It increases the risk of clots,” he explains. The body slows down in other ways, too. “Even our digestion slows during long-term sitting. When people move more, that improves too.”

SLEEPING RIGHT

How we sleep matters just as much as how we move.

“On your back is best,” he says. “A pillow under your neck and knees takes pressure off your spine.”

Side sleepers need full support as well. “Side sleepers need a pillow between the neck and the shoulder, and one between the knees,” he says. “If not, they will wake up with hip pain or a kink.”

He also sees many patients waking up tired or sore after holding on to a worn-out mattress for too long.

“If you wake up hurting more than when you went to bed, your mattress is done,” he says. “People replace their cars more than their mattresses, but we spend more time in bed than we do driving.”

Dr. Corey’s Top Four Posture Fixes 1. Drink more water. You’ll move more, and your body will thank you. Even a short walk to the restroom or to refill your glass helps reset your spine.

2. Check your setup. If you’re looking down at your screen, it’s too low.

Raise it to eye level and sit close enough to avoid leaning forward.

3. Fix your sleep. If you wake up sore, change your position or mattress.

The right pillow setup can turn restless nights into real recovery.

4. Don’t be a candy cane. Bring your phone to your face, not the other way around. Your neck and shoulders will feel the difference in days.

THE POWER OF STEMWAVE

Dr. Corey uses hands-on care, but he also relies on tools that help people heal faster. One of the most helpful has been StemWave. “I got StemWave for patients who have chronic pain or who have difficulty with getting adjusted,” he says.

Patients have seen positive changes.

“The results have been really good,” he says. “A lot of people feel a difference after the first visit.” He uses it often for chronic pain, old injuries, and joint issues. “It decreases inflammation, increases circulation, and brings stem cells to the injury site.”

His own story with it is what convinced him to bring it into the practice. “My wrists hurt so bad I thought I might have to quit adjusting,” he says. “After one StemWave treatment, I was like, alright… this works.”

That experience shaped how he treats others. He wants people to stay active and live without fear of pain returning. “I want people to get back to the things they enjoy,” he says. “If someone cannot play with their kids or do their hobbies, that is real pain.”

Golf looks like a low-impact pastime. Smooth greens, quiet fairways, and no sprinting or tackling in sight. But behind that calm exterior is a movement pattern that can either support your body for decades or wear it down faster than you realize.

For David Ogrin of the David Ogrin Golf Academy, the key to enjoying the game for life is not power or talent. It is healthy, aligned movement.

“Golf gives you a positive reason to move, twist, rotate, and stay active.”

“There’s nothing inherent in a golf swing, done in reasonable doses, that should hurt a human being,” Ogrin says. “But poor form? That’s where people get into trouble.”

A former PGA Tour professional with a deep understanding of biomechanics, Ogrin has seen every version of strain, soreness, and injury. His mission now is simple. Keep golfers moving, healthy, and having fun for years to come.

THE HIDDEN WEAR AND TEAR IN A GOLF SWING

At the sport’s highest levels, repetition alone can break down even the strongest athletes.

“Championship golfers hit thousands of balls a week for decades,” Ogrin explains. “Even good form eventually leads to natural wear and tear.”

Recreational golfers are not hitting anywhere near that volume, but poor mechanics can speed up strain quickly.

One of the most common culprits is improper wrist position. Many beginners instinctively “cup” or flex the wrist at the top of their backswing. “That position puts the joint in a very weak place, and now the entire weight of the club is pulling on that one spot,” he says.

Another classic mistake is the instinct to “lift” the ball into the air. That leads to rocking heavily onto the back foot and scooping the club upward.

Both movements stress the shoulders and disrupt the body’s natural alignment. “Golfers try to swing straight at the target,” Ogrin says. “But the swing is not a straight line. It is a tilted circle.”

of learning how the body naturally and safely rotates around the spine.

LEARNING TO FEEL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SORENESS AND PAIN

Because golf uses unique movement patterns, discomfort can be confusing for beginners. Ogrin breaks it down simply. Soreness equals fatigue, stiffness, and tired muscles. Pain means you should stop immediately.

“Pain is a sure sign you did something incorrect in the swing. Don’t do that again,” he says. Walking 18 holes comes with tired calves, achy legs, and mental fatigue, but those feelings should match normal exertion. Sharp, sudden, or shooting pains, especially after chunking the ground or hitting a root, are red flags.

“You work until you accomplish your goal, then you stop,” he says. “That’s part of the joy of golf.”

WHY MOBILITY MATTERS MORE THAN FLEXIBILITY

“Mobility is the whole thing,” he says. “Golf gives you a positive reason to move, twist, rotate, and stay active.”

Golf requires rotational motion through the hips, torso, shoulders, and even the neck. For older golfers, small adjustments, such as larger-grip clubs for arthritic hands, can help maintain confidence and stability.

Ogrin also sees golf as a long-term wellness tool.

His regular morning group is living proof. “They come out, hit their bucket, enjoy themselves, and they’re done. And they’re still moving. Still mobile.

That’s everything.”

When Kelley Pacillas opened River City Refillery in New Braunfels, she wanted to make sustainable living easier for families. What began as a personal search for safer, cleaner products evolved into a mission to help the community. Inside her beautiful shop, Kelley offers eco-friendly home and wellness products that customers can refill again and again, cutting down on waste and making it simple to find smart swaps.

Here, she shares how it all started and why every small change truly counts.

What inspired you to open River City Refillery and bring this kind of store to New Braunfels?

It actually took me a while to believe this was something the community wanted, not just me. I was working in corporate payroll and miserable.

I knew I needed something different and felt this calling to create a space for people who were struggling to find trustworthy products. At first, people didn’t take me seriously. Bankers even laughed and said no one would shop at a store that just sells soap. But the community proved them wrong. Every day, people walk in excited to support this mission, and that still gives me chills.

Many people feel overwhelmed about switching to non-toxic or sustainable products. How do you help them start small?

I always tell people, don’t throw everything out at once. Ask yourself, what am I running out of?

Start there. Replace that one thing, then come back when something else runs out. I’ve already done the research, so customers don’t have to stress. Making those gradual swaps keeps it manageable, and that’s really the point.

You talk a lot about wellness being connected to what we use every day. How do common products affect our health?

Our skin is our biggest organ, so what we put on it matters. So many mainstream products are filled with harsh ingredients and artificial fragrances that mess with hormones. Over time, all those exposures add up. I don’t think we’ve even seen the full effects yet. Once you start cutting those things out, you realize how much better you feel.

What are your dreams for River City Refillery’s future?

I want this shop to be more than just a place to buy things. I want it to be a hub for learning and connection. We have a back room that I’d love to turn into a space for community classes and small workshops. I want people to say, “Oh, that’s where I go for everything that makes me feel good about what’s in my home.”

For those who want to make a quick, meaningful change, what are your top three tips?

First, look at the three things you use most and swap those. Second, start reading labels. Avoid anything with “fragrance” or “sulfates.” Third, find community. Join a local group or ask questions online. It helps so much to learn together and take it one step at a time.
