Here’s to the New Year! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of NBTX City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Like most of us, this is an area of my life that continually takes effort to improve myself. The struggle comes not days after starting on a new venture at improving wellness but weeks or months after when you hit that roadblock, suffer an injury or just flat out lose motivation, so this issue is for you to help sustain your efforts! When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times, a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so occasionally might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So, plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at 2Tarts or Sweet Bites by Lizzie. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Ever heard of Pickleball? Chances are, you've played it, seen it, or at least heard someone rave about it - perhaps even inviting you to give it a try! But why has it become such a sensation, hailed as the fastest-growing sport in America? Melyn Gregorio, an Athletic and Fitness Specialist and Pickleball instructor at Das Rec, and Freddy Stone, Pickleball Director at John Newcombe Country Club, unravel the allure of Pickleball, especially in New Braunfels, where its popularity has taken root and flourished. Stone attributes the surge in Pickleball participation in New Braunfels to a blend of social mixers, family events, and work gatherings. He notes, "Pickleball has helped bring people together," creating a tight-knit community. Additionally, the accessibility of the sport, with numerous clubs and the ease of setting up home courts, contributes to its popularity. He adds, "It is a very social sport which brings the whole community together and gives you a sense of belonging." In recent years, interest has grown to the Boomers, the Millennials, and the Next Generation of youth." Stone also highlights Pickleball's unique appeal to seniors, stating, "Pickleball has provided a major benefit to the older generation physically and mentally." The sport's friendly nature to all age groups, coupled with smaller court dimensions, makes it less intimidating for older individuals. Stone emphasizes the fitness benefits of Pickleball, saying, "So many people don’t realize they have been working out until they get 2 hours in and then it hits them." Tara Faye Hi, I’m Tara Faye and this time last year, I was afraid to run a 10K (6.2 miles). I started running again in 2018, but did not really consider myself a “runner”. Because I was “slow” and walked often. In fact, I had planned to do the Gruene 10K in 2022 and talked myself out of it, because I leaned into my self-doubt, struggled with the mental side, and my endurance. Follow through was my demon and I let it hold me back. I also never really identified as an athlete growing up. I was in theatre, band, and color guard - all very physical activities but “athlete” was not a role I took on. Until now. As I type this article, I now run 10Ks several times a week and completed my first half marathon on Sunday, November 19th, the Two Rivers Half through Two Rivers Running. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget and I look forward to building as I prepare for my second half this month (January 2024)! I am a runner. I am an athlete, and I continue to show up and keep pressing to become the best I can; but it is not always easy. In fact, it’s hard. Being uncomfortable is guaranteed but embracing the joy of hard work and gratitude helps. It takes time, years even. My three Ps, prayer, patience and progress, no matter how small, keep me going time and time again.

I restarted my health journey in 2018 at my heaviest. I had just married my forever husband and gained an amazing bonus daughter. I had just lost my corporate job and was navigating life as a wife and mom and wanted the best for us. With new shifts in life, I started walking and jogging to help my physical and mental health. I knew if I was not right, I could not be right for others. It was a little here and there but at least it got me moving in a direction. In 2019, I stopped drinking (thank you God!). In 2020, I conquered 75Hard (a physical and mental challenge but honestly only scratched the surface). In 2021, I found a bible study group that changed my life, and helped me grow my walk with God. In 2022, I started working with a trainer, Kristie Mozisek with Absolute Fitness to help with my strength and nutrition. But I gained so much more, a friendship and confidence like no other connecting with her. I stopped focusing on the scale but focused on progress, no matter how small. And as a result in 2023, I won a local fitness challenge, lost 20lbs, and started running with a good friend. I actually started to feel like a runner, an athlete. I decided that running was something I enjoyed and loved how it made me feel. And through an answered prayer I connected with and joined the local running community through Two Rivers Running, owned by Michelle and Nick Blomstedt. I even got the opportunity to lead one of their weekday walking groups and joyfully take on the role. CONTINUED >

Pineapple Banana Bowl INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups frozen pineapple • 1 frozen banana • 1 handful spinach (optional) • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 tablespoon manuka honey (or other natural sweetener) • ¼ inch fresh ginger • ½ cup coconut water

Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day. Try some of these simple recipes, or create your own combinations to give your health a boost.
