Women, The Heart of Naples

There’s something truly special about taking a moment to recognize the women in our lives who make the world more vibrant and beautiful. Whether it's our mothers, daughters, friends, or colleagues, these women are often the silent forces that shape our days and make life richer.

With Mother’s Day this month, our thoughts naturally turn to all those incredible women—biological mothers and mother figures alike—who have made an unforgettable impact on us. It’s the teachers, the friends, the neighbors, and the family members who offer their love, wisdom, and support in countless ways.

This month, as we celebrate these remarkable women, I also want to encourage you to support local businesses owned by women in our community. One of my favorite parts of this job is connecting with and championing the incredible women here in Naples. From movers and shakers to makers and builders, these women bring so much to the table, both seen and unseen. Their contributions, often behind the scenes, create beauty and impact that cannot be replicated.

Take a moment this month to recognize the women in your life. Send a text, make a phone call, or arrange a video call with the women who have made a difference for you. It’s a simple but powerful way to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much they’re loved.

Here’s to celebrating the women who make life so much more meaningful. Happy Mother’s Day and cheers to the ladies who inspire us every day!

With Love,

May 2026

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY—WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I moved to Naples from Chicago in 2015 with no clients, one salon chair, and $1,000 in my bank account. I didn’t have any investors or a blueprint. Just a passion for the beauty industry and a strong belief that education, integrity and hard work could build something meaningful. Over time, that small chair grew into The House of Blondes, a salon known for specialized blondes and all advanced color techniques. What I’m most proud of isn’t the business itself, but the team and culture we have built—one focused on growth, mentorship and creating long-term career stylists and changing the game for our industry.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY FEMALE MENTORS OR ROLE MODELS WHO SHAPED YOUR PATH?

I’ve been fortunate to learn from many strong women throughout my career, both inside and outside of the beauty industry. Early on, I looked up to artists and educators who showed me that mastery of your craft and

commitment to education can open incredible doors. But I’ve also been inspired by the women around me every day—my team, our clients, and even the women in our community who are doing remarkable things in their own spaces. Building a clientele and business from the ground up required the same discipline, faith and persistence. That experience taught me that when you stay committed and consistent, incredible opportunities can grow from even the smallest beginnings.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO FOLLOW A SIMILAR PATH?

Focus on your craft. Stay humble, and never stop learning. Success rarely happens overnight, but consistency and passion compound over time. Surround yourself with people who challenge you to grow and who genuinely want to see you win.

ARE THERE ANY LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, INITIATIVES, OR CAUSES THAT ARE ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL TO YOU?

Giving back is something that’s very important to me. I’m a proud supporter of organizations like Path2Freedom and StarAbility, both of which do incredible work empowering individuals and creating opportunities within our community. Through House of Blondes, we also host makeover giveaways—we call it ‘Gifting Day’—where community members nominate someone who rarely takes time for themselves.

Rhonda Rabold

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY—WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I serve as the Brand Director for Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa, a practice that has delivered exceptional cosmetic and aesthetic services to our community for more than 25 years. My professional journey has enabled me to oversee a variety of specialties, instilling in me compassion, gratitude, and resilience. At this stage in my life and career, empowering and uplifting women is a central focus, and this field provides a meaningful platform to support that mission.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY FEMALE MENTORS OR ROLE MODELS WHO SHAPED YOUR PATH?

I have been fortunate to be surrounded by exceptional women throughout my life, starting with my mother and sister. Today, I continue to learn from my adult daughters, both of whom serve in the healthcare profession where compassion, resilience and critical thinking are so important. I also had a

manager who taught me the value and importance of diplomacy in leadership and communication.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO FOLLOW A SIMILAR PATH?

Healthcare management is less about managing processes and more about leading people. Those who succeed in this field understand the importance of clear communication, strong relationship-building, patience, and compassion.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ONE PIECE OF LIFE ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would tell my younger self to break through the boundaries others set and never settle for limitations placed upon you. Learn to recognize the difference between expectations and true requirements, and stand firm in your principles.

WHAT’S A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR APPROACH?

I once worked under a manager who lacked care, compassion, and understanding. As a single mother working full time, there were moments when my children needed to come first, yet that reality was not acknowledged. That experience ultimately shaped my leadership perspective and taught me the kind of leader I never want to become.

WHAT’S A PERSONAL MANTRA OR PHILOSOPHY YOU LIVE BY?

Hope is not a strategy in life, business, or relationships. Progress and success require clarity, commitment, and purposeful action.

Ana Oates

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY—WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

Design has always been something that felt instinctive to me, but my professional journey has been shaped over more than fourteen years of working in the luxury residential design industry. During that time, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating on exceptional custom homes and learning from incredibly talented architects, builders, and craftspeople. What has always inspired me most is the process of bringing a home to life—studying the architecture, understanding how a family lives, and carefully layering materials, textures, and furnishings to create something that feels both beautiful and deeply personal. Today my work continues to focus on creating sophisticated yet livable interiors that feel timeless, comfortable, and tailored to the people who inhabit them.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY FEMALE MENTORS OR ROLE MODELS WHO SHAPED YOUR PATH?

I wouldn’t say there has been one specific mentor who shaped my path. Much of my journey has come from learning alongside and observing talented people—both men and women—who brought incredible skill and dedication to their work. That collaborative environment has been one of the most valuable aspects of my career.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO FOLLOW A SIMILAR PATH?

My advice would be to stay curious, work hard, and truly immerse yourself in the craft. Design is an industry where experience is incredibly valuable, and so much of what you learn comes from being in the room, asking questions, and paying close attention.

WHAT’S A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR APPROACH?

A defining moment was realizing that growth often comes through the challenges and uncertainties along the way. Over the years I learned that trusting my instincts and remaining passionate about the work were just as important as the technical aspects of design. That perspective shaped the way I approach both my career and my life—with patience, resilience, and a commitment to creating work that is thoughtful and meaningful.

WHAT’S A PERSONAL MANTRA OR PHILOSOPHY YOU LIVE BY?

I’ve always believed in the idea reflected in the quote often attributed to Confucius: ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.’ When you’re passionate about your craft, the work never really feels like work.

Our newest project, Ce Soir, is an upcoming modern French restaurant at Bayfront in Naples that will feature a moody, elegant dining room, a vibrant bar, and a beautiful raw bar. The restaurant will also showcase a Josper oven from Spain—a unique charcoal oven known for bringing incredible depth of flavor to both seafood and meats. The goal is to create a sophisticated yet welcoming space where people can gather for a memorable dinner and stay to enjoy the energy of the evening. My path into the hospitality world really began when I met my husband, John, who has spent many years in the restaurant industry. Through him I was introduced to the creativity, excitement, and dedication that go into building restaurants, and over time I developed a real passion for food, dining, and the experience hospitality can create.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY FEMALE MENTORS OR ROLE MODELS WHO SHAPED YOUR PATH?

While I didn’t follow a traditional mentorship path, I’ve always been inspired by women who build meaningful lives and communities around them. I admire women who lead with confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose—whether that’s in business, family life, or philanthropy.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO FOLLOW A SIMILAR PATH?

Don’t be afraid to take opportunities even if you don’t feel completely ready. Many of the most rewarding experiences in life come from learning along the way and growing into new challenges. Stay curious and surround yourself with people who inspire you.

ARE THERE ANY LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, INITIATIVES, OR CAUSES THAT ARE ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL TO YOU?

As a parent of a child with autism, initiatives that support neurodiverse children and their families are especially meaningful to me. One organization that is very close to my heart is Autism Collier Charter School, which provides specialized education and opportunities for children on the autism spectrum. We are currently helping raise funds for the school, and it’s incredibly inspiring to see the community come together to support a cause that can make such a meaningful difference.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY—WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

My career started in the telecommunications sector, where I dedicated over 20 years to advancing into a leadership position as the Manager of Enterprise Business. This experience developed my work ethic, taught me effective multitasking, and helped me maximize every moment. Throughout this period, I was also a single mother raising my daughter, which gave me a strong sense of resilience, balance, and perspective. I discovered not only the importance of hard work but also how to truly appreciate life. Later, I pursued my passion for helping others by becoming an assistant teacher for special needs children—an experience that was both fulfilling and grounding. I also explored my interest in holistic health, contributing to various wellness publications and serving as

a contributing author. Simultaneously, I obtained my real estate license in New York and now continue my career in Florida. Real estate enables me to integrate all I’ve learned—building relationships, solving problems, and committing to service. I don’t envision a complete retirement; I genuinely love staying active, connected, and assisting people through significant life changes.

IF YOU COULD MASTER ANY SKILL OVERNIGHT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Technology, hands down.

WHAT’S A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR APPROACH?

Becoming a mother. The world’s perspective changes completely when you have a child to love and protect.

WHAT’S A PERSONAL MANTRA OR PHILOSOPHY YOU LIVE BY?

I always said to myself early in the morning, ‘I’m such a mess!’—and by the end of the day I realized I was doing better than I gave myself credit for. That reminder keeps me grounded.

WHAT’S THE LEGACY YOU HOPE TO LEAVE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN IN NAPLES?

Be your true, authentic self. People love real, genuine people.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT—PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

Becoming a mom. And having amazing promotion opportunities over the years—but I turned down most of them to stay close to home and raise my child. Family always first.

WHAT’S ONE LUXURY YOU ALLOW YOURSELF, GUILT-FREE?

A good massage and time to myself— both are non-negotiable.

Erin Leigh Lintz

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY—WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I’m the founder of Leigh Luxe Upholstery, where we specialize in automotive, marine, and commercial upholstery, blending craftsmanship with custom design and restoration. Originally from New Jersey, I eventually made Florida home, and much of what I love personally now overlaps with the work I do professionally. I’m an avid car enthusiast and a Florida girl at heart, so from custom interiors to marine projects, the lifestyle here naturally aligns with the work I create. Naples is a place that values beauty, detail, and experience, which reflects the standard I bring to every project. As a single mother, building this business has been deeply personal, and that same journey also led me to create the Unbreakable Mothers podcast—a space for honest conversations around motherhood, growth, faith, and identity.

WHAT’S A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR APPROACH?

Becoming a mother changed the way I approach everything. It gave me clarity, discipline, and a deeper sense of purpose. As a single mother, you learn quickly how to lead even when life feels uncertain—and that mindset shaped both my business and the way I show up in the world.

WHAT’S A PERSONAL MANTRA OR PHILOSOPHY YOU LIVE BY?

Faith first, excellence always. I believe in trusting God fully while still doing the work with discipline, integrity, and intention.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP, BUSINESS, OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT HEADING?

I think women are redefining leadership in a powerful way—leading businesses, families, and communities without having to choose just one identity. Strength and softness can coexist, and that’s where real influence lives.

WHAT’S THE LEGACY YOU HOPE TO LEAVE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN IN NAPLES?

I hope my legacy shows that women can build something meaningful without losing who they are—that you can be feminine, resilient, ambitious, and grounded all at once.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT—PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

Launching Leigh Luxe Upholstery as a single mother and watching it grow into something real and respected in this community. Every project completed and every client who trusts my work is a proud moment.

WHAT’S ONE LUXURY YOU ALLOW YOURSELF, GUILT-FREE?

Time alone to recharge—whether that’s a quiet morning, a long drive, or just space to think. As a mother and a business owner, silence is the ultimate luxury.

Noel King

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY—WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I’m a biotech talent strategist for high-impact startups turned Naples-based founder, building a life and business at the intersection of science, luxury, and wellness. After two decades in biotechnology, my adult diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes and autoimmune challenges revealed how true wellbeing demands a holistic blend of pristine organic nutrition, cutting-edge science, and an active lifestyle. This philosophy birthed Hibiscus Market, my haven of elevated essentials where Naples tastemakers source local organic harvests and global treasures via seamless VIP concierge service—it’s wellness as ritual, where science fuels longevity and coastal elegance thrives.

WHAT’S A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR APPROACH?

My diagnosis completely reframed my sense of purpose. When your body demands that you pay attention, you stop moving through life on autopilot.

I stopped optimizing for external success and started building around what truly sustains me—and that shift became the foundation for everything I do now.

WHAT’S A PERSONAL MANTRA OR PHILOSOPHY YOU LIVE BY?

Science and soul are not opposites— they’re partners. I believe in using every tool available, from data and research to intuition and faith, to build a life that is both high-performing and deeply meaningful.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP, BUSINESS, OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT HEADING?

I think women are redefining what influence looks like. We’re leading in spaces that weren’t built for us and building new ones where everyone is welcome. The future belongs to women who are unapologetically whole—ambitious and grounded, scientific and spiritual, strong and soft.

WHAT’S THE LEGACY YOU HOPE TO LEAVE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN IN NAPLES?

I hope to leave a legacy that shows Naples’ next generation of women that there is no ceiling on what you can create when you align your gifts with your values. Wellness, beauty, and purpose are not indulgences—they are foundations.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT—PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

Creating Hibiscus Market while managing a chronic illness and building a new life in Naples. Every order fulfilled and every client I serve is proof that your hardest season can birth your greatest work.

WHAT’S ONE LUXURY YOU ALLOW YOURSELF, GUILT-FREE?

Organic wine, sunshine, and doing absolutely nothing on a Tuesday afternoon—guilt-free.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY—WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I’m the team lead of Gulf Coast Luxury Group at John R. Wood Properties here in Naples, where I lead a team of eight incredible real estate professionals. I’ve been in real estate for six years, but my foundation started with a decade-long background in marketing, which has been instrumental in how I position properties and build our brand.

Originally, I’m from New York, but Naples and Marco Island were always part of my life growing up.  My family and I vacationed here for years before officially planting roots in 2013. That connection made the transition into selling luxury real estate here feel very natural.

Over time, what started as a personal leap into real estate evolved into building a team and a business that focuses not just on transactions, but on relationships, strategy, and delivering a highlevel experience. Today, we’re proud to serve clients across Southwest Florida, from first homes to luxury properties.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO FOLLOW A SIMILAR PATH?

Start now.  Bet on yourself sooner.

I spent years pouring my energy into building other people’s businesses before I finally took that leap for myself. I wish I had done it earlier. There’s never going to be a “perfect” time, and waiting for one only delays your growth.

If you have the drive and the vision, take the risk. You’ll figure things out along the way, and the lessons you learn along the way will always outweigh the comfort of staying where you are.

WHAT’S A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR APPROACH?

Losing my younger brother completely shifted my perspective on life. It was a reminder that time isn’t promised, and it changed the way I approach everything, from my career to my relationships.

In many ways, I feel like I’m living not just for myself, but for both of us. That mindset has made me more intentional, more driven, and more appreciative of every step along the way.  He was a go-getter and so intelligent, creative, and funny.  I hope to honor his legacy daily!

Behind the Scenes

ARTICLE BY LAUREN ROSSI PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS PAYNE - PAYNE MEDIA CO

When it came time to capture the women at the heart of our May issue, only something extraordinary would do. Photographer Chris Payne of Payne Media Co set up his shot aboard the Rock of Ages, a stunning Galeon 560 FLY, a masterpiece of European craftsmanship that provided the perfect stage for a cover worthy of the women gracing it.

With the waterfront of Port Royal glowing behind them in the warm light of golden hour, the images practically shot themselves.

But behind every seamless charter is a crew that makes it happen. Owner Bill welcomed the team aboard with genuine Naples hospitality, Captain Mike navigated the waters with confidence, and Mate Jill ensured every moment on deck ran without a hitch.

The Rock of Ages is an experience. And for one unforgettable evening on the water, she was the perfect backdrop for celebrating the remarkable women of Naples.

“The Rock of Ages isn’t just a yacht, she’s an experience. And for one unforgettable evening on the water, she was the perfect backdrop for celebrating the remarkable women of Naples.”

INTRODUCING Thryve Wellness

A NEW CHAPTER IN PATIENT-CENTERED CARE

ARTICLE BY DR. KATHY VERDES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA BLOOM

I’m excited to announce the launch of my new practice, Thryve Wellness, a clinic built around my passion for helping patients achieve optimal health through personalized and preventative care.

For many years, I had the privilege of serving as both the owner and provider at Naples Clinic, where I cared for an incredible community of patients. My experience there allowed me to treat a wide variety of health conditions and build meaningful relationships with the people who trusted me with their care. I’m deeply grateful for that chapter of my career and the patients who supported the growth of the practice.

However, over time I realized that I wanted to dedicate more of my energy to an area of medicine that has become a true passion of mine—functional and integrative healthcare. That vision is what inspired me to create Thryve Wellness.

At Thryve Wellness, I will continue to provide primary care and sick visits, ensuring patients have access to high-quality, attentive medical care when they need it. At the same time, the practice will focus heavily on services designed to optimize health and longevity, including hormone optimization, medical weight management, peptide therapy, and functional medicine.

My goal with this new practice is to spend more time understanding each patient’s unique health story. Functional medicine allows me to look deeper into the root causes of symptoms, rather than simply managing them. Through advanced testing, personalized treatment plans, and a focus on lifestyle and metabolic health, I aim to help patients restore balance, energy, and overall wellness.

Thryve Wellness represents a new chapter—one where I can focus on what I love most: helping patients not just manage their health, but truly thrive.

ESTATE LIVING MEETS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PREMIER MEDIA GROUP

In the heart of Oakes Estates, a remarkable property offers the rare combination of thoughtful craftsmanship, modern touches, and the laid-back luxury Naples is famous for. There are homes that simply check boxes, and then there are properties that tell a story. This Oakes Estates

ARTICLE BY CITY LIFESTYLE NAPLES

property is unmistakably the latter. From its classic Florida Vernacular architecture to its meticulously maintained infrastructure, every detail has been considered to create a lifestyle that is as comfortable as it is impressive.

With over 8,150 square feet under roof, the property makes a statement long before you step through the front door. A freshly painted exterior matched by all-new interior paint throughout signals the care that defines this home from the inside out. Practical upgrades abound: a whole-house reverse osmosis water system, a 5-ton AC unit, a newer water heater, and a central vacuum system with a new motor ensure the home runs as beautifully as it looks. Extra-deep garages offer generous storage, and a fully air-conditioned shed provides flexible space for hobbies, equipment, or workshop use.

Step outside and the magic truly begins. An additional 1,541 square feet of covered, screened wraparound porch wraps the home in quintessential Florida style — perfect for morning coffee, evening entertaining, or simply watching the breeze move through the trees. At the center of the outdoor living space sits a large gunite sport pool, its distinctive design featuring the deep end in the middle, making it an ideal gathering spot for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

The guest house, built in 2006, adds another layer of versatility to the estate. Approximately 1,100 square feet under air, with two bedrooms and one-and-a-half baths, it is finished to the same high standard as the main residence. Polished concrete floors, impact-resistant windows, granite countertops, luxury German cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances make it a modern, comfortable retreat, ideal for extended family, long-term guests, or a private home office compound.

Perhaps equally as compelling as what the home offers is where it sits. Located in Flood Zone X (meaning no flood insurance is required) and positioned approximately 50 inches above the crown of the road, this property delivers genuine peace of mind in a region where elevation and flood designation matter deeply. The privacy and serenity of Oakes Estates living comes without sacrifice: worldclass Naples beaches, acclaimed dining, and premier shopping are just minutes away.

For the discerning buyer seeking a true estate experience — one where no detail has been overlooked and no upgrade left undone.  This Oakes Estates property is a rare and worthy find.

AVA RESORT CANCUN

If you want Cancun done in a five-star way, AVA Resort Cancun completely exceeded our expectations. Located less than 15 minutes from Cancun International Airport, arrival is simple and quick. The property sits directly along the Caribbean with multiple oceanfront pools, restaurants, and lounge areas positioned to take advantage of the water views.

Every room at AVA includes a true ocean view through their Oceanfront Promise™, meaning there is no guesswork when booking your stay. Regardless of the room category, guests wake up to views of the Caribbean. The rooms are spacious, bright, and designed to highlight the water from nearly every angle.

The main pool stretches along the beachfront and offers a lively atmosphere with plenty of seating and service throughout the day. For guests looking for something different, the resort also features the 2.7-acres AVA Lagoon powered by Crystal Lagoons® technology. The lagoon offers calm, clear water for swimming, paddleboarding, and relaxing throughout the day. It creates a completely different water experience from the ocean and quickly becomes one of the most unique features of the property.

One of the things that stands out about AVA is how well it works for different types of travelers.

For families, the resort offers space to spread out along with activities designed for younger guests. The lagoon becomes a natural gathering place for families, and the resort atmosphere stays energetic without feeling overwhelming. There are plenty of places to relax while the kids stay entertained throughout the day.

For couples, the resort also offers many opportunities to slow down and enjoy the setting. Oceanfront lounges, sunset walks along the beach, and quiet corners throughout the property make it easy to turn the trip into a romantic getaway while still enjoying the amenities of the resort.

Dining at AVA includes more than a dozen restaurants across the property, giving guests a wide range of cuisines and dining environments to choose from. During our stay, we had the chance to experience a few of the standouts.

Copal focuses on Mexican cuisine with refined presentations of classic dishes. Black Iron offers a steakhouse experience with well-prepared cuts and traditional sides. Chez Moi serves French cuisine in an adults-only setting with a more intimate atmosphere for dinner.

The spa is one of the most impressive features of the resort. We started with the hydrotherapy circuit before our treatment, moving through pools and relaxation areas designed to prepare the body for the massage. The AVA Relaxing Massage was one of the best we have experienced. Guests can also book additional wellness services, including advanced treatments and full hydrotherapy sessions.

AVA holds the AAA Four Diamond designation, which reflects the service standards and overall quality of the resort. Staff members are attentive without being intrusive, and the property operates smoothly even with the size of the resort.

For travelers looking for an all-inclusive experience that combines ocean views, a unique lagoon, multiple dining options, and a strong spa program, AVA Resort Cancun delivers a wellrounded stay that works equally well for families, couples, and small group getaways.

YOUR DIGITAL DESTINATION FOR LOCAL LIVING

10 YEARS IN: BUILDING A BRAND BEYOND BORDERS

“BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL BRAND IS A TEAM THAT BELIEVES IN IT. AND THEN THERE’S THE VOICE.”

Ten years ago, I had a vision—and a whole lot of determination.

Jennifer Matteo Event Planning wasn’t the brand it is today. There were no multi-state clients, no national partnerships, no expansion conversations happening across time zones. It was me, a deep love for creating meaningful experiences, and the belief that if I built something strong enough, it wouldn’t stay small for long.

And I was right.

What started as a boutique planning company has grown into a nationally recognized brand, working with clients and collaborators across the country—from Florida to New York, Boston to California, and everywhere in between. But the growth didn’t come from chasing scale. It came from staying rooted in what matters: relationships, intention, and delivering an experience that feels as personal as it is elevated.

In the beginning, it was all hustle. I said yes to opportunities that stretched me. I built trust one client at a time. I learned quickly that in this industry, talent gets you in the room—but consistency, professionalism, and heart are what keep you there.

And as the work grew, so did the vision.

We expanded beyond planning into full-scale brand experiences. We built creative partnerships. We launched sister companies like UpStaged, bringing custom rentals and design elements in-house so we could control not just the look—but the feeling—of every event. We stepped into venue management, shaping spaces into destinations. And somewhere along the way, we stopped just producing events and started building environments that people remember long after the last song plays.

That evolution is what allowed us to move beyond a local footprint and into a national presence.

Because when your work is strong, your brand travels.

But what’s been even more rewarding than building the business… is helping others build theirs.

After a decade in this industry—after the wins, the lessons, the mistakes, the growth—I realized something: there are so many talented people with incredible ideas who just don’t know where to start. Or how to scale. Or how to take something from “this could be amazing” to “this is actually happening.”

And that’s exactly why we launched  The Foundry - by Jennifer Matteo

The Foundry is the next chapter. It’s where everything I’ve learned—every system, every strategy, every real-life experience— comes together to help others build, grow, and launch their own concepts. Whether it’s a venue, a planning company, a creative brand, or something completely new, this is about giving people the tools, structure, and confidence to do it the right way.

Because let’s be honest—this industry can be overwhelming. It’s not just about having a great idea. It’s about understanding operations, pricing, branding, client experience, team building, and how to actually sustain and scale what you’re creating.

The Foundry is where we break that down.

It’s consulting. It’s education. It’s mentorship. And it’s built with the same intention and energy that has shaped everything we’ve done over the last ten years—real, honest guidance with a focus on both creativity and business.

Because you need both.

And maybe that’s the biggest shift for me in this season—moving from just building my own brand to helping shape the next generation of businesses.

But let’s talk about the real side of growth—because it’s not all polished installs and perfectly styled tables.

Building a business at this level requires sacrifice. It means early mornings, late nights, and learning how to lead while you’re still figuring things out yourself. It means making hard decisions, trusting your instincts, and sometimes taking risks before you feel ready.

And for me, it also meant doing all of that while raising a family. I’m a business owner—but I’m also a mom. And balancing those roles isn’t always seamless. There are days I’m reviewing design decks between school drop-offs and pickup lines. Weeks where I’m traveling for events, then coming home and shifting right back into mom mode without missing a beat.

Is it perfect? Not even close.

But I’ve learned that balance isn’t about equal time—it’s about intentional time. Being fully present wherever you are. Giving yourself grace on the days that feel chaotic. And understanding that building a life and building a business can coexist—even if it looks a little messy along the way.

One of the biggest shifts over the last ten years has been learning to let go of doing everything myself.

You can’t grow nationally—or sustainably—without a strong team. And I’ve been lucky to build one filled with talented, driven

women who bring their own creativity, leadership, and perspective to the table. Together, we’ve created a culture that values excellence, collaboration, and trust.

Because behind every successful brand is a team that believes in it.

And then there’s the voice.

As women, especially in business, we’re often taught to soften— to be agreeable, to stay small, to not take up too much space. But over the last decade, I’ve learned that there is power in owning exactly who you are. You can be warm and welcoming while still being decisive. You can lead with heart and still set boundaries. You can build something bold—and do it unapologetically.

With a smile, of course… and just enough sass to keep it interesting.

Looking back, I’m proud of how far we’ve come—not just geographically, but in how we’ve evolved.

From building a brand… to building brands.

Ten years in—and we’re just getting started.

Not anti-AI. Pro-humanity.

Because

when connection becomes optional, humanity becomes a luxury.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

A N ATURAL SOLUTION TO MOSQUITO AND PEST REPELLENT

BLOCKER BUZZ

A decade ago, what should have been a simple summer memory—a nighttime swim at our wooded Michigan home—turned into a frightening ordeal. My daughter, Katie, suffered a severe allergic reaction to a single mosquito bite. In that moment, the carefree rhythm of family life collided with a stark reality: for her, “mostly effective” protection simply wasn’t enough.

Like many health-conscious parents, I refused to rely on products containing DEET. Instead, I searched tirelessly for natural alternatives, purchasing sprays, bracelets, stickers—anything that promised relief. I even treated our yard. After spending hundreds of dollars, nothing worked. The frustration was overwhelming, but it sparked a determination: this problem had to have a better solution.

Drawing from my experience creating natural remedies—having previously helped manage my son’s eczema—I began experimenting. I’m not a chemist, just a mom motivated by necessity. But on my very first attempt, something remarkable happened: it worked. Not partially. Not occasionally. Completely. For Katie, that meant freedom—the ability to enjoy the outdoors without fear.

I never intended to start a business. As a former real estate broker turned stay-athome mom, I was simply grateful to have found something that protected my child. But word spread. Friends and family began requesting batches for summer camps, soccer games, and vacations. Encouragement followed—suggestions to bottle it, to share it more widely. During the quiet pause of the COVID-19 pandemic, I finally did.

What began as “Buzz Blocker Mosquito & Pest Repellent” evolved alongside its growing audience, especially in places like Florida, where even no-see-ums pose a challenge. Today, the formula remains rooted in its original purpose: safe, effective, and made with certified organic ingredients. No harsh chemicals, no compromises—just a solution born from a mother’s insistence that her child, and others, deserve to enjoy the outdoors without worry.

Please find Buzz Blocker online at  https:// www.katiescleancreations.com or at your local community golf/tennis shop, resort, or at Food and Thought 1 on Tamiami Trail.  It is offered in 4 oz spray or tallow versions, as well as a 3 oz roll-on that is great to carry on an airplane!

Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you?

Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction.
