always look like it, most of us are aware we need to act now, and everywhere I look, companies and individuals are weighing up their impact. As an example, there’s a garden center near where I live, the Driftwood Garden Center in Estero (there’s one in downtown Naples, too), that strives to keep things local. More than 90 percent of the plant materials they stock come from South Florida, a conscious effort to minimize their carbon footprint. Knowing that makes a difference to me when I’m deciding where to buy, so shops like Thoughtful Threads near the Coastland Mall is a favorite, as is their cafe and food store next door, Food and Thought. The store's 100 percent organic and is supplied, for the most part, by Oakes Farms, which are 100 percent organic and located right here in Naples. Meanwhile, our editor takes stock of her own carbon footprint in her article about how to travel more sustainably. And we focus on the automotive industry, which has made colossal strides in recent years toward becoming more sustainably oriented. We take a look at the new BMW i8. THE WINTER W I N E F E S T I VA L The biggest event in Naples, the Winter Wine Festival raised nearly $16 million this year. And in 2020 they are aiming for $20 million. At the Meet the Children’s Day at the Naples Botanical Gardens one afternoon during the three-day event, we caught up with many of the children and the people who work tirelessly with the charities in Naples to raise money to support their efforts. It was a heart-warming day, to say the least.

MARTINI GLASS AUCTION Another charitable organization, the annual Martini Glass Auction at Artis Naples, raised almost $600,000 for area veterans groups in February. The highlight of the event was the auction of martini glasses designed and created by artists to reflect the lives of political and entertainment celebrities, complete with their signatures. More than $325,000 was donated during the auction for the purchase of special Segways and sophisticated wheelchairs designed to provide mobility and independence to disabled veterans.

years. St. Matthew’s House offers programs to alleviate homelessness, hunger and substance addiction. This year’s show featured more than 607 cars, including more than 125 Ferraris, a new Ferrari Scuderia area, a MarineMax display, domestic and international exotics, vintage and American muscle cars, Corvettes and Porsches. “What started as a little car show for fun, actually 17 years ago because we started on Third Street, has really turned into a special event,” says Tom O’Riordan of the Ferrari Club of Naples. “It’s the largest car show on the East Coast. We have a great car community here.”
ONE THING IS FOR SURE: there are many generous and devoted people out there. The first few months of 2019 in Naples has witnessed a flurry of charitable events. And the funds raised in January and February 2019 alone are staggering.

THE BMW I8 ROADSTER IS HERE

Naples Lifestyle | April 2019
IS GREEN THE NEW YOU? Here’s an exciting fact: the 2019 BMW i8 is here. We stopped by the BMW showroom on Tamiami Trail North recently to meet the newcomer. We fell in love; you will too. Here’s why. Four years after the initial launch of the i8 coupé—which topped its category in the International Engine of the Year Award since its launch—the plug-in-hybrid drive system demonstrates once again how far it remains ahead of the curve. Using a base of carbon-fiber with aluminum subframes and lightweight exterior panels, a small mid-mounted 231 bhp gas-fueled engine drives the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox, while a somewhat large 143 bhp electric motor drives the front wheels. The result? Four distinct ways to get going—fast. In sports mode, the AWD is sports-car driving all the way, engaging the power of the combustion engine with extra boost provided by the electric motor. The hybrid mode is peaceful and ultra-efficient, in both all-electric mode and blend mode. The comfort mode offers a balance between sporty performance and fuel efficiency. Or, purely electrically, rev up to 75 mph (perfect for around-town cruising) using the plug-in battery reserve. Either way, you’ll never run out of steam unless you’re in the desert. The car maintains the battery enough to keep the electric motors working as part of the hybrid system. It also accepts the industry-standard J1772 plug (without an adapter). This means you can find a place to plug in on BMW's ChargeNow network or any other public option, at home with BMW's
w h at i t h a s
charging station or at home or on the road with the available TurboCord.

The roof is an electric two-piece unit, which neatly folds itself into the space where the rear seats would normally be.
It weighs about 3,500 pounds— less than traditional roadsters (those with memorable numbers) when outfitted with 4WD, auto box and electric roof.
The battery holds 70 percent more than before, as does the main traction motor.
The official CO2 numbers are as low as 42 g/km for the coupé.
There’s a generous cubby for your golf clubs (or your pooch) behind the seats. April 2019 | Naples Lifestyle

let's talk about... sustainable travel HOW TO LIVE A GREENER LIFE ON THE ROAD
26
Naples Lifestyle | April 2019

SHE CLAIMS THE WORLD'S HER OYSTER. So, focusing on her individual impact on the environment, our editor, Alison Holmes, takes stock of her standing. Was there to be rejoicing or reconnoitering? As an avid traveler, are you cognizant of how much you contribute to the planet’s well-being? Its future? Its deterioration? Everyone’s talking about it. And, as far as I’m concerned, I think—no, I know—that I should be a lot more conscious of my carbon footprint. But how much damage am I doing on a daily, weekly, monthly basis? Am I careless? Am I a countable, contributing component to some of the negative things happening to the planet? And what can I do about that? Tourism and travel, in general, will never be entirely sustainable as every industry has impacts, but we can, I know, all work toward making it more sustainable. Assuming you’re in the same boat (or aircraft) I’m on, let’s assess. Travel makes up just one component of going green. So, should we go vegan, as meat and dairy are generally more resource-intensive to produce than plant-based foods that therefore increase the pressure on land, water and the climate? Should we take public transport everywhere or cycle, ditch the designer labels and wear sustainably made clothes in all shades of mud? Well, probably not all the way, but we certainly need to take stock of what we’re doing, make some serious strides to change our habits, and support the brands that are going the extra mile to pay back to the world. It’s confusing; overwhelming, really. The story is complex and not yet finite, but it’s well-and-truly here to stay. Starting at the beginning, it’s easy to understand the dilemma if we categorize living life sustainably into three groups, the three Ts, which, while not my personal formula, is much better than any I could come up with when I tried. They are: Turn off, Trash and Transport. The first two are simpler to come to grips with, and I think most of us follow the rules these days: rinsing yogurt containers and separating trash, turning off lights, reusing plastic bags, and buying cucumbers that come in plastic wrap (if you don’t know why, look it up). While the three go hand-in-hand, and we must adhere to all, the third T, transport, is something we travelers, for business or pleasure, need to focus on a lot more closely. A personal aside, in 1995 I had a writing teacher who lived in a remote area in Oregon, no doubt in a wooden house with a compost heap in the garden. He used to bicycle everywhere he went, no holds barred. I remember labeling him at the time as "granola." Well, I liked fast cars (still do). But now, 23 years later, I am sure his carbon footprint is way, way better than mine (not to mention his calves). I need to pedal fast to catch up. So I went online to see where I stand (FootprintCalculator.org), to determine what was what. My results were pretty dismal, even though I take public transport when I can and play by the "turn off" and "throw away" rules.

(CON TI N U ED)
Without divulging my score, I need to walk the walk on all fronts from now on. If I were just getting involved to make myself feel better about all those flying miles I’ve clocked up over the course of the months, years and decades, then I now realize that won’t be enough. I could go online, and we all should, and offset my air miles for a calibrated fee on websites, and there are many, like Myclimate, Atmosfair, Carbon Footprint and Terrapass. But this, I am informed, should only be a last resort after making all efforts to avoid it in the first place, as a ton of planet-warming CO2 avoided is always better than a ton offset. Nevertheless, like everyone else, I need to fly, and the offset projects, funded by the new, greener me and others with the same mantra, offer extra benefits such as poverty reduction in the developing world. Many of our favorite hotels and resorts also take the environment and conservation of our planet very seriously. Singita resorts in Africa and the 1 Hotels here in the USA are two of my favorite examples. As for the 1 Hotels group, their allegiance to the earth movement is impressive from the moment you walk through the door. “The world is beautiful, and we want to keep it that way,” is their signature. And they’re certainly trying hard in cities that are known for never sleeping or turning the lights out: New York and Miami, for two. Singita resorts in Africa, meanwhile, are toeing the line when it comes to living life in the green, for everything they do and everything they touch is with a thought to the environment, wildlife conservation and the community, something they’ve been at for 25 years and counting. According to one of their inspiring blogs, "Community development at Singita means helping those living in and around the reserves and concessions to thrive both economically and socially and essential to achieving this goal is providing employment opportunities and the support of small enterprises." The message here is that we should be on the lookout for those companies that care and favor these concerns over others. We need to be aware. As for me, the good news is that I won't have to give up my passion for fast cars as the auto industry has paid attention and have many solutions already, with more and more on the way (Porsche's Mission E, for example). So I’ll be back before Earth Day (April 22) next year with a far lower carbon footprint score than this years’ clocked in till then. What about you?

CLOTHES SHOPS IN THE NAPLES AREA, WERE HAPPY TO INTRODUCE US TO THEIR LINEUP THIS SEASON. ”You feel good when you're doing something, even wearing something, that does the world good,” says Danielle McFadden, the store’s manager/buyer—someone we classify as a fellow eco-warrior. "We believe that reducing our carbon footprint on this planet is paramount. Growing and eating organic food is just a part of living a sustainable life. By wearing organically produced clothing and using organically produced goods, you'll be taking an even bigger step in the right direction." She really does wear the walk, and she lives it, too. She’s passionate about her organic diet, recycles everything she uses, refusing plastic where possible, buys into cool fashion brands, powers her abode with a green supplier, and is pleasantly vocal about all of the above. As the website claims, "Try an organic cotton T-shirt and you'll feel the difference." We couldn’t agree more. And the nightclothes and sheets they sell are the stuff of dreams—literally.
