Naples and pets... a perfect match
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that pets bring to their families.
This special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment.
I've been blessed with several furry family members over my 50+ years: Champ, Bailey, Butterbean, Alpine, Charlie, Duffy... It's a deep love that continues today.
While we finish this issue, we are working on our September issue, our special Hurricane Ian issue, sharing feel-good stories from around SWFL.
As in every part of our lives, our pets play a role in our survival and healing from this extraordinary event. Cheers everyone. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Sincerely,
August 2023

Landscape architecture - what is it?
An eye-catching home oozing with curb appeal always has striking landscaping. The design, balance and upkeep are all carefully planned and managed, as you homeowners know. We caught up with landscape architect Mike Flaugh to ask about his passion, profession, projects and pets.
NCL: THIS IS OUR PETS ISSUE. WHAT SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED ABOUT WITH OUR LANDSCAPING FOR OUR PETS?
Mike Flaugh: The one common thing to consider with your pet in your landscape is poisonous plants. Unfortunately, the list of toxic plants is huge, many more than you think. In most cases, for there to be poisoning, the dog would need
to consume a lot of the plant. The best advice is never to leave a puppy in the garden unattended. Adult dogs who are no longer eating everything they see are pretty safe with regular ornamental plantings. If you have a puppy, it is great to start training the dog to use the area of mulch and shrubs to do its business, not the grass, this will make your life much easier! Also, synthetic turf is gaining in popularity for dog lawns.
NCL: HOW DOES THE MAGIC HAPPEN?
MF: We are boutique, and passionate. Team talent, experience and technology enable us to deliver high-level, sophisticated design without losing the human touch.
ARTICLE BY NAPLES CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
We have become experts in code compliance, signage, furnishings, pool finishes, event spaces, pergolas, lighting, audio, putting greens…and, of course, landscaping.
NCL: TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS.
MF: New clients are often surprised to learn that we have no trucks or shovels, and we do not own a nursery. We are able to provide the client with three separate, apples-to-apples proposals from the best local landscape contractors in the area. Also, the separation of design and installation allows us to fairly and honestly evaluate performance and quality.

Local business offers ketamine treatments to help patients relieve past traumas and discover more of themselves.

MySelf Wellness in Bonita Springs is a ketamine-assisted therapy center that helps individuals work on themselves from the inside out. Treatments begin at six doses spread out over three weeks. Ketamine is one of the safest, least-toxic dissociative anesthetics available on the market. When taken properly, patients enter into a therapeutic dream-like state.
“When trauma happens, it damages the neural pathways in our brains,” Charles Patti, owner of MySelf Wellness, says. “Ketamine serves as a control, alt., delete for the old program that no longer serves us, and allows new programs to be laid down. The dissociative state takes down the blocks so patients can release them and let them go.”
Patti’s goal is to destigmatize ketamine by providing it as a first line of defense for patients. “It isn’t anything to be scared of,” he says. “There is hope. People don’t need to struggle anymore.”
One of the unique things about MySelf Wellness is that each of the nurses and administrators have successfully completed multiple rounds of ketamine treatments. This provides an outlet between patients and staff to talk through their experiences and process each treatment in a more in-depth manner.
One of MySelf Wellness’s nurses, Jess Seibert, used the ketamine treatments to help ease her addiction to prescription drugs. Jess suffered from severe childhood trauma, and as she aged, it began to worsen. Her doctors prescribed
medication, but she soon started to self-medicate because the mixture of all the drugs she was on caused even more mental health issues.
“My husband and kids had an intervention for me,” she says. “It was either rehab or I was on my own. In rehab, I learned who I didn’t want to be. When I left, we moved to Florida. I was off of everything except for one of the prescriptions.” Now, Jess is prescription drug free, and after several ketamine treatments, she feels lighter.
Local Naples resident Maria Lentini recently finished six treatments at MySelf Wellness. Like Jess Seibert, Maria suffered severe trauma in her past. Instead of medication, however, she turned to plant medicine. She had been looking for something with the effects of ketamine, and when she found MySelf Wellness, she knew she had to try it. “To understand yourself you have to go inward and not be afraid to see what’s there,” Maria says. “The medicine will give you what you need even if it’s not what you want.”
Following her six treatments, Maria experienced a huge improvement in her mental wellness. “I was able to forgive myself and the people who harmed me, regardless of whether it was intentional or not. I believe that when you forgive someone, you forgive for yourself, not for them,” she says. “You can’t live in your past for your entire life. You need to leave it there at some point, and embrace the journey and hard work it takes to get beyond it.”

It took Oksana Samuelson forever to find the perfect name for her puppy, Miss Elliana Pickachoo. Elliana means “My God has answered” and Oksana believes the Boston terrier has been a blessing in her life. Elli was a Christmas gift from friends Oksana was dog-sitting for. “The day I brought that dog back, they surprised me with a little black and white squashy face puppy. And yes, I cried like a little baby.” They love the Tommy Bahamas on Third Street, since they are dog friendly, and then will go for a walk with a quick stop in the gelato store next door. Oksana supports PawsCrossed.dog , a South Florida organization that rescues, rehabs, and rehomes any dogs in need.

The nonprofit organization is a leading force against animal cruelty, fighting to improve the lives of animals around the world. NFA is on the frontline of animal welfare, often working in far-flung, neglected areas where other organizations don't go, and always being there to help animals - in particular dogs, cats, horses, and donkeys - when they need it most.

All her life, Ana Radunovic dreamed of having a dog and her husband Nikola made that dream come true 5 years ago. Nikica is German Spitz. Their meeting was love at first sight in Ana’s hometown of Belgrade, Serbia. Ana met three puppies. When she locked eyes with Nikica, she knew they belonged together. “My dog was born unique. His brain is like a human’s. His tail is green, he listens to punk music and he likes to eat pizza,” says Ana. They are inseparable and together, the family hangs out at Naples Dog Park, Pack & Post on 5th Avenue, Urban Meditation and Casa Neri, their favorite place for dinner.
Lola is a Shih Tzu, 14 years young, and follows Dr. Bradley Engle and Nancy Nycum like a shadow. Her workout includes laying on her side and running laps in the air. Lola doesn't enjoy the heat so she likes to walk indoors and her favorite place is the Coastland Mall. She also enjoys visiting her parents’ offices.
Ainsley and Dutton are trained service animals who love belly rubs and bacon. They like hanging out at Baker dog park and Campiello with Chris and Jessica Zazo. Ainsley is 10, a pointer, chocolate lab and pit bull mix. Dutton is an Australian labradoodle, not quite 2. Chris and Jessica support the Humane Society Naples events with their company, Hailstone Wines. HSNaples.org
Christina Ourganian met Blondie, a 4-year-old cavapoo online, and fell in love. When her husband Chris picked up Blondie at the airport, he too was smitten. Blondie thinks she’s a human, loves getting
new dresses and bows and is very outgoing. Blondie loves going to work and sitting on all of the clients' laps. She also loves greeting guests and making them feel at home. If she could offer them coffee and tea she would. She also loves strolling down 5th Avenue, eating at Cafe Milano, and of course, Starbucks for her puppichinos!
Legend is a Friewalker which is a crossbreed of a Friesian and a Tennessee Walker. He has had a transformative impact on Jennifer Couture’s life and she will never forget the first time she saw this majestic creature and they locked eyes. “I think for many of us, our pets are our refuge, our place of comfort and joy, they feel good, and help us feel safe,” she says.
Maggie,17 is a master meditator and a napping ninja and is frequently seen on duty as neighborhood watch in her second-floor window. Alice is a daredevil and arrived at the home of Jen Hayes and Mark Athanacio by mail. Maggie is a white cat, adopted when her original family (a neighbor) moved out of state and left her outside. Alice is a white-crested black Polish hen a. She joined the family flock, neighborhood chickens who survived Hurricane Ian flooding, when they and their humans lost their homes. Jen says they have happily become the house for misfit furry friends on the street.
When Violet Brandenburg was 2-days old, she met Bunny, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Bunny has a big personality and can manipulate anyone into giving her a treat with just a head tilt and eye contact. Violet’s mom and dad, Matt Brandenburg, and Lindsey Todd love to go boating with Bunny and take walks at Waterside Shops and eat breakfast at EJ’s. Ranger is a quiet labradoodle, but very expressive with his whole face lighting up when he’s excited. His favorite pastime, when Madeline Tracy is not home, is to climb on top of all of the pillows on her bed and make himself a pillow fort. Clever! “My favorite place to take Ranger is Ankrolab! They are such a fun and laid-back environment safe for all dogs. Their patio is the perfect size. You never feel too close together and he loves to sit outside and make friends with people coming in and out,” says Madeline. She supports the foster group in the Sarasota/Tampa area, LoveforPawsFL.org, and volunteers for the humane society.
Altaf and Maggie Jetha first met Archie at a breeder's farm where they got a discount because his legs were too long to show. Piper came along a few years later as Archie needed a playmate. Piper is sassy and thinks she’s a big dog. She hops like a bunny. Archie is the biggest lover! They like to go along for dinner at Sea Salt and the family supports DetroitDogRescue.com
Bella is Mike and Nateja Merkt’s 10-year-old poodle terrier mix. Bella is a mixture of sweet and diva. She can roll over, shake hands, high five and play dead. She takes her job of greeting and napping at the office (The Specific Chiropractic Centers) very seriously. Bella loves a long walk or runs at sunset.
Ciara Lister was working in Ohio for a few months. “Tuna, previously 'Luna,’ was always tied up in a yard when I drove by her house every day. The previous owners were looking to re-home her as she was too
much work and too big for their house. So $150 later I bought my best friend off of a tree! Tuna is the most loving, cuddly, dog despite living outdoors for almost a year,” says Ciara. She is on the board of directors for Salty Dog Paddle, a nonprofit Surf & SUP brand that benefits injured rescue dogs.
Edna May Seymour and Matt Meeker’s dog Gary is another “foster failure,” a hurricane rescue and a pit bull-coonhound mix. Gary immediately loves everyone, both two-legged and four-legged. He has the kindest heart and the cutest tail that wags whenever he meets a new friend. Gary and his family like Ridgeway Bar & Grill and he also goes to Donnie’s World for daycare. Ms. Seymour is a veterinarian at the Humane Society of Naples and they also support Collier County DAS. CollierCountyFL.gov
The Barth Family’s goldendoodle, Bailey Love, has mastered all the typical doggie tricks: sit, stand, turn, spin, paw, up! But, the sweetest command she follows is “Bailey, Pray.” She joins the family in prayer before meals and before she eats. She also “prays” along with the girls’ teams at St. John Neumann High School. Bailey Love joined Jeff & Jaime, Jaina, Jacie and Jolie Barth six years ago as a puppy, after a previous pup from the breeder took ill with Canine parvovirus and passed. Bailey loves to prance down 5th Avenue and show off her good manners or sniff around Bakers Park. Her favorite restaurant by far is Capriccio. The family supports the Humane Societies of Naples and Monmouth County, NJ SPCA, and No Dog Left Behind NYC.
Gracie was a pandemic puppy. Heather Schwartz and Tim Chew went to the Finger Lakes of New York to get her from a farm when she was only 8 weeks old. Gracie is now 3-years old and loves to snuggle. She thinks she is a lap dog like most Great Danes and is nicknamed “Cow” in Heather’s family. Gracie enjoys a car ride
“My favorite place to take Ranger is Ankrolab! They are such a fun and laid-back environment safe for all dogs. Their patio is the perfect size. You never feel too close together and he loves to sit outside and make friends with people coming in and out.”
~ Madeline Tracy

anywhere and loves to go to Seed to Table and long road trips.
Amanda Miller and Harper met nearly four years ago when Harper, a Morkie (Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier) was a puppy. Harper loves snuggles, getting dressed up and going on car rides. Together, they zip around to restaurants and the dog park and just enjoy being together.
André Agassi lives on Gulf Shore Dr. After the hurricane, he made friends with neighbors and their pets, all out cleaning up and trying to stay sane. André Agassi is a mini golden doodle who lives with Susan, Lee and Calvin Baierl. The family would walk the pup (an apricot golden) and meet neighbors spontaneously, developing friendships, gathering every weekend for dinner and every morning for walks.
Gracie is a 10-month-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy and Lizzie is an 18-month-old domestic short hair kitten. They have a very unique relationship, and they are in love with each other. They alternate between playing and chasing each other and spooning and giving each other baths. Gracie is also a show dog, she is currently the number three CKCSC puppy in the country. Leslie Sherman rescued Lizzie from Domestic Animal Services here in Naples after she lost her litter of kittens during Hurricane Ian.
Nicholas and Laura Altitonante adopted Kobe, a Staffordshire Mix, when they purchased their first house in 2020 in New Jersey. Kobe is a love bug and loves meeting new people. He gets along well with the family cat, Bonzo. They are inseparable. He's also a big protector of Laura. They love to go to Baker Park to get their daily 3-mile walk in.
Cooper (8) and Ryder (5) are Havanese and can be admired while they shop and dine at Mercado with the Schwartz family: Matthew, Sydney, Alison, and Eric. Cooper carries a stuffed monkey in his mouth wherever he goes and Ryder is hopelessly devoted to his human mom. The family supports GuidingEyes.org and the Humane Society Naples.
Pedro, a Chihuahua mix lives with Cedric Colyer after they met at the Humane Society of Naples five years ago. Cedric says Pedro is Naples’ first dog realtor and together they sell gorgeous homes to gorgeous people (and their pets). Look for them cruising around 5th in the Moke!
Stephen and Beth Catizone say Clyde, a 2-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, is a lover, not a fighter. Clyde could lick you to death from head to toe. He is obsessed with his ball, and would rather play fetch with his ball than eat.
Clyde loves to speak and make other cute sighs, and whines, and because the family has a no-barking rule - he uses these often.
Clyde loves to go to the studio (Infinite Recording Studios), where he’s in charge at the desk and chases his ball all around while music is made. Dinner and a stroll on Fifth are his favorites. The family supports Destiny Church.
Ollie is still a puppy, a super mutt but mostly pit bull, chow chow, and toy poodle who met Jess Young when she fostered and then adopted him. “I foster failed,” says Jess who owns Jestheva Aesthetics. Together, they support the Domestic Animal Services of Collier County, the only open admissions shelter the county. She planned a puppy prom fundraiser in May that raised $15,000.

And Now, a Word From Our Influencers
ARTICLE BY MARLISSA GARDNER, CIARA E. LISTER
Finding the Heart in Art
By Marlissa Gardner
Summer is here and as this great publication turns its focus to the happiness that pets bring to our lives, I turn to the topic of how art can bring “heart” to who we are and how we live our lives.
A lot of emphasis in art is placed on value. It is certainly something I focus very clearly on when I work closely with my clients. But it’s not just the financial value that is important to them, it is also the emotion that art brings to their lives. In our discussions, it is a privilege to listen to the stories and memories of a landscape, a street scene, a family memory, or the joy that nature and animals provide in their lives. When building a collection and deciding what art to keep and what to monetize, it is so important to get to the root of joy and meaning in life.
Artists throughout the ages have often turned to animals and their pets as a source of inspiration as they sought to reflect on their relationships. Pablo Picasso was one such notable artist who was remembered for his love of animals, particularly dogs. He tended to “borrow” dogs from friends and acquaintances. It was one such encounter that stole Picasso's heart: that of a Dachshund named Lump (a German word meaning “rascal”). Picasso drew inspiration from his Dachshund, depicting the dog in quick, stylized sketches, as well as including it in a number of his famed interpretations of Las Meninas by Velásquez.
At Emillions Art, our artist Mara Sfara has produced iconic images of animals of personal value, from dogs to horses. One personal highlight of our hugely successful Master’s Show in February of this year, was the appearance of original artworks from Andy Warhol. Our colleague and art dealer, John De Luca, provided pieces from Warhol’s iconic sketches 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy, showcasing the artist's fascination with cats.
One thing I know about Naples and our community is that it has “heart.” Our animals and pets bring such value to our lives, as does art and the great artists that have helped bring joy through their talent and heart.

Revocable living trusts have long been associated with the wealthy elite, but it's time to expose this misconception. These versatile estate planning tools offer advantages for individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their financial status.
A living trust helps you avoid probate, a costly and time-consuming process. By establishing a living trust, you ensure a smooth transfer of assets to beneficiaries without court intervention, benefiting everyone who wants to spare their loved ones unnecessary delays and expenses.
Privacy and control are crucial in estate planning. Unlike wills, living trusts offer confidentiality by keeping financial matters private protecting you and your beneficiaries. They also allow you to retain control over assets during your lifetime, ensuring your wishes are respected and providing peace of mind.
Revocable living trusts are highly customizable, accommodating specific provisions for dependents, charitable giving, and asset protection. This flexibility applies to everyone, allowing you to tailor your trust to meet your unique circumstances and intentions.
Revocable living trusts are not exclusive to the wealthy. They are an essential tool for all individuals seeking effective estate planning. By avoiding probate, maintaining privacy, and enjoying customization options, you can protect your assets and provide for your loved ones. Contact Lister Law PA, to establish a revocable living trust that meets your needs, regardless of your financial situation. COOL LOOKS
Fashion finds from R Council
Summer is the perfect time to experiment with bold colors and prints. Think details, movement and cool fabrics that let you make the most of summer. Our friends at R Council picked out these three looks to keep you feeling (and looking) COOL.
We like this Belen tank top and pants by Oitici, an urban sun wear brand based in Brazil. Oitici offers different colors, shapes, and textures for an elevated, yet cool and comfortable look. 94% Viscose, 6% Polyester. The top is reversible and if you’re going for a more modest look, wear it with a bralette like this one from By Together. Pair this look with the L Space Coastal Sea Visor.
Another Summer look made by the Brazilian-based brand, Oitici, is this Tapajos mini skirt and tank top (91% viscose, 9% polyester). You will definitely make a statement with the fringe detail and open-back tank top fastened by two stunning buttons. This outfit is also complemented by the Alohas Grace Corn heels for a sophisticated and classic look.
Elevate this LNA classic linen boyfriend button-up, made out of breathable and lightweight linen viscose, with a pair of Orion Slim Carpenter Pants by Etica Denim. Looking for an ethical option? Etica Denim, based in Los Angeles, is rooted in the ideals of fair labor, environmentally conscious manufacturing and social responsibility. Finish the look with the Decade Bicolor sandals by Alohas.

Ladies Leadership Luncheon Launched
ARTICLE BY NAPLES CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA BLOOM
Del Mar graciously played host to a highly anticipated lunch event that brought together a diverse group of women from the local community. Presented by Naples City Lifestyle magazine and co-hosted by Heather Schwarz and Kim Staley, the Ladies Leadership Luncheon was a resounding success, featuring a full house attendance with 65 enthusiastic participants. This empowering gathering provided an exceptional platform for women to connect, network, and foster a sense of community within Naples. It was quite the place to see and be seen on Fifth Avenue.
The event's theme revolved around health and wellness, with an emphasis on empowering women to prioritize their physical and mental well-being. Two remarkable speakers, Dr. Darren Clair from Vibrance Health and Dr. Vicki Hemmett from ChiroQueen, captivated the audience with their expertise and passion for promoting a holistic approach to health. Their insightful talks on hormones and the pelvic floor inspired attendees to take charge of their personal wellness journeys and embrace a balanced lifestyle.
TREND SETTER | LIFE + CULTURE 46
Del Mar provided an inviting atmosphere that fostered meaningful connections among the attendees. The event not only provided a space for networking but also created a nurturing environment where women could connect with each other.
A notable highlight of the Ladies Leadership Luncheon was the support from generous sponsors, Garramone Plastic Surgery and Blue Zones Project of Southwest Florida. Their commitment to empowering women and promoting overall well-being made the event possible. Their presence underscored the significance of community partnerships in creating a space where women can come together to thrive and succeed.
The Ladies Leadership Luncheon at Del Mar was just one installment of a recurring series of events that take place
every two months. The success of the Ladies Leadership Luncheon at Del Mar demonstrates the powerful impact that a community-driven event can have on empowering women. By focusing on health and wellness, providing a space for networking, and nurturing a sense of community, the event serves as a catalyst for personal and professional growth.
Our next event will be on August 10. With each gathering, the women of Naples are carving a path toward a brighter future, driven by unity, empowerment, and resilience.

Family First
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY.
My wife Jenn and my 3 kids. Jenn is an anesthetist and also owns Laser Lounge in Naples. My son Joey is now 13 years old. He plays 14U travel baseball and tennis. Juliana is 11 and loves horseback riding, barrel racing, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Jacob who is 8 and plays baseball, soccer and tennis.
DURING YOUR CAREER, YOU’VE SEEN SOME DRAMATIC CHANGES IN THE NAPLES HOUSING MARKET. WHAT DO YOU FORESEE FOR Q3 AND Q4?
The SW Florida real estate market is still going to remain strong. In the off-season, the inventory usually increases and that will happen for quarters three and four. We may see a little bit more in the next two quarters than usual. It will still remain a good strong real estate market and a great time for buyers and sellers to upsize, downsize or just sell.
WHO ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?
My mom and dad and brother. Also, my team consists of Teresa Thullen, Julie Ciaramitaro, Stacey Hurley, and Cindy Zairis. I give them a ton of credit because they make it possible for me to be out in the field all day while they manage my files and stay on top of everything. They not only make it possible for me to be out in
the field, but they make it possible for me to be a dad and not miss kids’ events, games, dinner time, and vacations.
WHEN ADVISING CLIENTS, DO YOU FIND IN-PERSON IS STILL THE MOST VALUABLE MEETING OR HAVE ZOOM, EMAIL, AND PHONE TAKEN OVER?
Each client is different. Once we have a conversation, we determine the best way to meet. For the clients that are not in town, we can’t meet in person so we will do a Zoom meeting or FaceTime. My preference is always to meet in person.
WHAT NEW TOOLS HAVE YOU DISCOVERED RECENTLY THAT HELP YOU DO YOUR JOB SO WELL?
I try everything and I know exactly what works. A lot of the new systems are great and I stay ahead of the technology curve but do you know what works best? Better than any technology out there is hard work. I simply work hard. When the phone rings I pick it up and when the phone doesn’t ring, I make it ring. Technology is great and all the follow-up systems are great as well but what did we do before all of this? A pen, pad, and follow-through. I truly feel that I have the old-school work ethic mixed with new technology and focus on making sure each family is 100% completely satisfied. That’s my secret recipe.

Fun Tricks To Teach Your Puppy
A list of exciting new tricks to teach your puppy
ARTICLE BAILEY MORRIS
We created a list of some fun tricks to teach your puppy! Whether you just welcomed a new furry friend into your home or you’re teaching an old dog new tricks, you and your pet are sure to have a fun time! Spending time playing and training with your pet makes for a great bonding experience! Don’t forget to reward them with some delicious dog treats when they successfully do a trick. My pup’s personal favorite treats are chicken, peanut butter, and carrots. We hope you and your pup have a great time learning the tricks on this list!
SPEAK
Get your dog to bark naturally (try ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door). Once they bark, say ‘speak’ and reward them.
STAY
Have your dog sit and then tell them to stay. Hold your hand out with your palm toward their nose in the stop position. If they hold the position for a second or two, praise them and reward them with a treat. Keep repeating this and gradually having them stay longer.
SHAKE
Hold your hand out in front of your dog. Your dog may do some experimenting trying to figure out what you want. Once they put their paw in your hand, immediately praise and reward them.
