I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the holiday. To plan a Valentine’s Day date out... or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. While we enjoy this beautiful season, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life, the ones in your home and on your street, in your neighborhood and in your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, and those in your community but it also means loving what is near - those under your own roof included. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. ARTICLE BY DR. JENN SIMMONS Ahhhhh, l’amour. If February has your head filled with images of Pepé Le Pew embracing the squirming cat, and you are the squirming cat, you are not alone. Unfortunately, modern life is tanking our libido. Here are five things to pay attention to in order to get that rev back in your engine.

1. EAT MORE PROTEIN. As we age, our protein requirements increase. Over 40? Aim to eat two-thirds of your weight in pounds in grams of protein a day.

2. PRIORITIZE SLEEP. Sleep is where the healing happens. Even one night of poor sleep will tank the hormones of love. Everyone needs between seven and nine hours of sleep a night. Practice good sleep hygiene and make sleep a priority.

3. SPEND TIME OUTDOORS. Our bodies are programmed to work in symphony with the rhythm of the sun – circadian rhythm. Getting first-morning sunlight, sunlight in the mid-day, and then watching the sunset are keys to hormone balance.

4. AVOID HORMONE DISRUPTORS. Things like fragrance, antibiotics, heavy metals, plastics, nonstick surfaces, dryer sheets, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. The fewer chemicals, you’re exposed to, the healthier your libido will be.

5. BUILD YOUR STRESS MANAGEMENT TOOLBOX. As humans, we only know two modes: war or procreation. If your body thinks it’s at war, it will not give you the hormones you need to inspire procreation.

You might be familiar with the name Herc Rentals, especially after Hurricane Ian. You could say they are in the building and rebuilding business. They rent construction, industrial and contractortype equipment. But Herc Rentals does so much more. “I had not spent much time in Southwest Florida before coming on board as CEO in May 2015,” says Larry Silber. “It wasn’t long before my wife and I realized that we live in one of the best places in the U.S. as far as lifestyle, recreation and weather. We love Naples, and we especially enjoy the atmosphere, restaurants and shops of Old Naples. It’s a wonderful place to entertain family, friends and colleagues, and the overall climate and character of the larger Southwest Florida region is a great asset in recruiting employees to join our company.” Silber currently oversees 450 team members at the Field Support Center, their headquarters in Bonita Springs. (The company has 360 branches in North America and approximately 6,400 employees.) Herc Rentals is always ready to respond to natural disasters, but Ian was different. “Ian caused a whole new level of damage, devastation and destruction that we had never experienced,” says Paul Dickard, Herc’s vice president of communication, "and many of our team members lost everything.” The company immediately set up a Hurricane Relief Fund for impacted workers, like Janine Brown, Herc’s sourcing manager. “Things like this show why Herc Rentals is such a great company to work for. They put my needs ahead of work.” And Team Herc continues to pay it forward. Whether it’s cleaning up the beach or other Earth Day activities, collecting and donating school backpacks, or building homes for Habitat for Humanity, they love giving back. “It’s important to build involvement in our community,” says Dickard. “And making sure we are good corporate citizens.” Youth Haven is another non-profit they believe in. Located in Naples, it is Southwest Florida’s only

Live Fest 2022 was a sell-out AGAIN! Great music, great times, and plenty of smiles to bring in the holidays and new year! In the eyes of Steve Hagenbuckle, founder and executive producer, it is a special event he and Rob Hartman conceived in 2017 for the purpose of bringing our community together for a special night of music under the stars, while giving back to those in need. Steve works closely with Wasserman Events team members Taylor Ives, Rob Hartman, Sarah Smith, Becky Honor and others to refine what their team already does well – deliver a fullscale comprehensive music festival alongside a major PGA Tour event, the QBE Shootout.

Delivering SW Florida’s largest outdoor music experience is no small task. Live Fest will be entering its fifth year of operations in 2023. There are hundreds of team members contributing to its success. Key players also include iHeart Radio’s Adam Bauer, Kevin Miskimins, and Louis Kaplan, Murphy Entertainment’s Paul Murphy, Classic Sports Catering, Collier County First Responders Police and EMTs, other security teams, and volunteers. By way of example, on the day of the event, Live Fest donated proceeds to feed 600 local families in need for a week at a food drive at the Coastland Mall. Live Fest, along with the QBE Shoot Out, gives proceeds yearly to CURESEARCH for Children’s Cancer, the mainstay charity for their events. Live Fest will be making other donations in the coming months to families and organizations in need in the wake of Hurricane Ian. From Steve’s perspective, this would not be possible without their great sponsors. Live Fest now has more than twenty major sponsors assisting in making Naples’ largest music experience a success, all of which are special to Steve and Rob. He and Team Wasserman have been very selective in who they work with, always looking for synergies for the community and the experience. According to Steve, “when you merge positive energy, highly capable team players and continual pursuit of excellence, things fall into place. Life is not a dress rehearsal. We have only one life. Landscaping History SETTING THE SCENE AT KEY WEST’S OLDEST HOMESTEAD ARTICLE BY MIKE FLAUGH, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

One of my favorite projects of 2022 was The Oldest House and Garden of Key West. The Oldest House in Key West and all of South Florida features family portraits and original furnishings, as well as other period pieces, ship models, and documents telling the story of old Key West. It's spectacular. In the rear of the house is a spacious, peaceful garden, where benches invite you to sit and reflect. There, you will see the oldest surviving Cook House in South Florida. The project checked a lot of boxes for our team. It was a public space, but still small enough for intimate detail. It had sensitive and protected species within the garden. There was a historical component, and there was a need for expanded event spaces. So for us, this one project tapped into all of our skill sets. Working with the Board and the City of Key West, we developed a space that is beautiful,

functional and sustainable. Antique brick was used for the new footpaths and gathering spaces. The plant pallet was classic tropicals including orchids, elephant ears, ginger, philodendrons, palms, iris and ferns. Of course, not all of our projects have a historic component. We are also very busy designing residential properties and resorts throughout Florida with every imaginable context and motif.
