I'm a lucky and thankful person for many reasons, but being the son of Pat Dodge takes the cake. Living only two hours away from her is an added bonus of living in Naples. I will be celebrating her and all of the mothers this month. For our LADIES issue, we celebrate five ladies of Naples who Inspire us. I’m proud to say I will be turning 65 this month. I want to define age, not defy it. I want to banish the myth that a woman is perceived by her age. After I retired a few years ago, I reinvented myself by creating my blog. Our attitude is what keeps us living vibrantly, so cheers to the Golden Years! My husband and I look forward to celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary this October, when we will also be welcoming our ninth grandchild! We resided in Naples off and on for 16 years before permanently calling Naples home about three years ago. At the urging of my kids, I started a lifestyle blog toasting ageless style. I enjoy sharing fashion inspiration, recipes, beauty finds and activities to do with your grandchildren through my blog and Instagram. This season’s can’t miss style is a maxi dress which will provide you an ultra-femme allure and leave you feeling both modern and romantic. There are so many fun ways to dress it up or down. I love an effortless, versatile piece. And a chic lightweight dress can transition you from lunch with girlfriends by the beach to shopping on 5th and ending with enjoying cocktails for happy hour. In general, this style has a relaxed bohemian feel. We started seeing longer-length dresses around the ’70s when designer Oscar de la Renta wanted to find a dress style that women all over the world could wear. In my work at Emillions Art I have the privilege of working with so many amazing female artists, but I especially love it when I can build relationships with artists based here in Naples, like Elaine Murphy. When Elaine was growing up in Dublin Ireland, her grandfather asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, and she replied “an artist”.” For me when I see Elaine’s work and hear her talk about her art it’s evident to me that this is her life’s passion. With a 30-year career as an artist, she’s explored working in fashion, jewelry design and abstract and figurative art and developed her own unique style along the way. Her attention to detail and craftsmanship is beyond reproach in everything she does. So much so that she founded her own factory devoted to crafting her ceramic and home accessory designs. Elaine creates stunning large-format abstract and figurative paintings that are fluid, sensual and distinctly original. Her paintings are works of fine art with a personal style that draw people in, but the woman behind the work is just as magnetic. Elaine is the perfect example of an artist whose power is in the gravitational force of her personality. She exudes this amazing energy that makes everyone around her want to be her friend. Her paintings may hang in many private U.S., International, and celebrity collections, but her approachability and authenticity never waver. I see her as a role model for other female artists just coming into the industry. She’s someone who lives by example not only in her commitment to creating high-end unique works of art but in every aspect of her life. Honoring Self You can have it all. You just can’t have it all at once. It was the first month of my general surgery residency. I was sitting in our departmental conference still soaring on high about becoming a doctor, landing this fantastic surgery spot, and beaming with anticipation of my future and the life ahead of me. Dr. Dixon Witmer, or DDW as we called her, was a stunning, curvaceous, blond surgeon with bedroom eyes and a mind for medicine. She was the only other woman in the room filled with the men of surgery. Whether it was out of concern, solidarity, or jealousy I’ll never know, but she invited me to dinner. She asked me about my hopes, my dreams, my aspirations, and listened intently as I listed all the pieces that I wanted in order for my puzzle to be complete- and I wanted it all. In the end, she offered me advice. She said, “You can have it all. You just can’t have it all at once.” I was crestfallen. Fast forward 20 years. Now I am one of the only women in the room. Now I am the one who has the generational wisdom. Here is my advice: 1. Children are for the young. Though you may have more financial stability waiting until your 30s, that is all you will have. Fertility drops off precipitously in your 30s. 2. 20s is a good time to have children, but not to eat like one. Start building your healthy eating habits now. Here is a good rule of thumb: if it grew in the ground, fell from a tree, walked, swam, or flew, you can eat it. Otherwise, best to leave it. 3. Deplasticize your life. Plastics are everywhere and they are killing us. 4. Work less, love more. In the end you will only be remembered by those that you loved. Coffee in hand, I greeted a crystal clear Upper Saranac Lake, gliding across the glassy water in a gorgeous 33’ 1933 replica Hacker-Craft named “The Point of it All.” The hand-constructed mahogany speed boat was driven by Bradley, who grew up not far from The Point and couldn’t imagine working anywhere else in the world. He proudly pointed out other Adirondack Great Camps, built by captains of industry in the 1930s - sprawling compounds of dark native timber and stone lodges with bright trim scattered across deep green lawns dotted with pots of geraniums as big as a VW Bugs and proud boat houses full of vintage boats. This is an ideal morning at The Point, a charming 11-room Relais & Chateaux property and former Great Camp of William Avery Rockefeller II located in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. Thoughtful and elevated touches welcome even the most discerning guests at every turn. The game room bar is stocked with homemade chips and cookies as well as gin and whiskey from Lake Placid and beyond. The library offers old friends like Franny and Zooey and Anne Boleyn. Handmade wooden jigsaw puzzles from Stave taunt from a neat cabinet and a grand old billiard table stands sentinel, adorned with birch bark, antlers and a hand-painted landscape of some dreamy Adirondack lake (nearby, likely). If you must, you can watch television here (your room won’t have one) while you pretend the news or football score is more interesting than the view or the company. The Point attracts travelers who have honed the art of vacationing, taking pride in turning off phones and turning to the person next to them to carry on a conversation. Dinners are an affair, with black tie dress suggested two nights a week in keeping with the historic perspective of the Gilded Age as no fewer than seven courses are served across tables set for a large party of your newest “Friends in Residence” (their names will be printed on the nightly menu laid at your place). Meals can also be taken inside the kitchen at the chef’s table (my favorite), on the patio overlooking the lake, in your suite, on a boat, in the cozy lean-to up on the hill in front of a roaring fire (there’s a bar there too) or most anywhere you like on the 75 private acres. Change after dinner and take a walk down to the lake, look up at the stars and listen. You may hear a loon calling, the crackle of a nearby bonfire, a champagne cork popping or nothing at all. Coffee, morning beach walk, emails - CHECK! Next up, into the closet to find just the right outfit for a day of meetings, lunch with my publisher, and later, a gallery opening. The closet can be a daunting place, but designer Sara Trapp believes the closet should be fresh, inspiring, roomy and yes, functional. I sat down with Sara, an expert at All About Closets to find out more. SGC: What trends are you excited about for designing women’s closets this spring and summer? ST: I am loving natural wood tones combined with soft white. Rich wood tones have made a comeback, and white allows your clothing to be the centerpiece of the closet, allowing smaller spaces feel light and bright. I love the floor-to-ceiling look for closets and it is a must-have in Florida, as we have limited storage space. SGC: Yes, true! What are some priorities for a new closet design? ST: Drawers in the closet can eliminate the need for a large bulky dresser in your bedroom, giving the room a more open, flowy feel. Drawers are versatile and can be used for jewelry (we have great suede inserts for this), rolled belts, lingerie, swimwear, and more. Also, a tall framed, full-length mirrored door. You can hide folded clothing behind the door and get a beautiful, finished look. We can also build this as a 3-way mirror, still with shelving behind the doors. And the last must-have for a woman’s closet would be valet rods and hooks. Valet rods are excellent for packing, picking out an outfit for the day, or just dropping your dry-cleaning in the closet there before putting it away on a busy day.

Healthcare, children and education are issues that get Mary’s attention and she looks for local charities that help make our community stronger. “As a former nurse and healthcare executive, I look for organizations that make a difference in a person’s life like Bosom Buddies. This is an all-volunteer 501c3 supporting local breast cancer survivors. I’m also active at Seacrest Country Day School. I’m a big fan of their art and sustainability program and getting that exposure to children at an early age is so important. NPAC and Naples Players are both amazing organizations to support to help promote the arts for our local youth.” Mary says she is blessed to have many dear female friends, including her mother. It’s a tough task to only pick just one to mention who has made a difference in her life. “I read that one is considered lucky to go through life with 5 true friends. My closest friends in my life are the ones I met in or hail from Indianapolis or Naples. They are remarkable women, self-accomplished, wise, non-judgmental, and they make a difference in the world every day with acts of kindness. They are steady throughout all life experiences both successes and challenges and always ready for encouragement or sound advice. Distance may separate us from time to time but when we’re together it seems no time has passed. I’m truly thankful for my fantastic female friends!”

Fiona is simply my best friend. Judith is a Lifetime Trustee for NCEF. “It is a privilege to collaborate and share our time, treasures, and talents with the likeminded individuals who have become trustees,” says Judith. “It is a wonderful organization that I am proud to be actively involved with.” Judith says many of her friendships with strong women date back to her schooldays, contributing to the person she has become. One woman, however, stands out. “I met her when I came to the U.S. I had no family or friends here at the time and she organically became somewhat of a guide and mentor to me.
