LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome, fall!

October 2022 PUBLISHER

Gregory Dodge | Gregory.Dodge@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Sue Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com

With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comfort food with family and friends. I asked Dionne Flemming to assemble her crew for our Bleu Provence Wine Room cover photo. Many thanks to Patrick Dearborn, Andrew Regenhard, Klarissa Rodriguez, Hanna Vogel, Dionne Flemming and Merrill Komninos for gracing our cover. October is our most delicious issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite neighbors and their favorite restaurants in Naples. Jana and Brent Seaman share why The Continental is special to them. Carmen Tomesetti shares his passion for Mino. I totally agree, Mino and Molto are the top pasta shops in Naples for me. Teresa and Kev Smith find romance and great food at Bleu Provence. We had the pleasure of sitting down with legend Tony Ridgway of Ridgway's restaurant in Old Naples and our editor found they both have a love for northern Michigan where Tony's aunt and mother owned a shop and where he got his start. We hosted our first MINGL party on August 18 at Cavo lounge. Over 150 guests enjoyed our Naples City Lifestyle cocktail made with love with Juice Society. MINGL is a cool networking event we will be hosting every other month, hope you will join us for the next one. We also hosted our second Wellness Triathlon at Naples Pier. As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around town! Sincerely

We love the hamachi usuzukuri, a delish yellowtail sashimi topped with jalapeno, minced shallots, and garlic. The flavors are unreal and completely satisfying and fresh! And the grilled octopus is not only delicious but an absolutely beautifully presented dish. The Berkshire pork belly bun is also a favorite. It’s marinated for 24 hrs. Hands down, YOU CAN’T LEAVE Namba without their homemade Green Tea Crème Brule for dessert. The entire team at Namba is welcoming and very professional. We have been lucky enough to have Paul as our server a few times and he was always so pleasant! The kitchen and front-ofhouse staff all stop to say hello.

Everything we’ve tried on the menu at Bleu Provence is very good. We lean into the foie gras, escargot and duck leg confit. If you are a wine drinker, the best option is to work with the wine specialist to select wines and pair your food to accentuate the wine! Introduce yourself to founder Jacques and his son, Clement, who is a very talented sommelier. This fantastic restaurant captures the essence of old Naples, with a charming French twist. One of the best French wine lists to be found outside of France. Especially for Burgundy. And the owners, a family, are in the restaurant nightly.

Be Kind and Save Room for Dessert

“Making great food is a treat for everyone.”

Tony Ridgway’s golden rules ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA BLOOM AND PROVIDED

26

O UR TOWN | FOOD + BEVE RAGE

Tony Ridgway believes in kindness. He believes in letting go of the bad energy, throwing it away, or working through it to find kindness. And, he believes kindness is contagious. “I believe when you’re just and fair and kind to the staff, from the dishwasher to the executive chef, and you treat your service staff [well] and the service staff treats our customers well, then they respond in a similar fashion,” says Tony, a 50-year champion of the Naples restaurant landscape. From his office upstairs at Ridgway Bar & Grill on Third, Tony presides over a kingdom of good food and fine wine there and at Bayside Seafood Grill & Bar, Tony’s Off Third and Sukie’s Wine Shop. When we talked, I was in northern Michigan, coincidentally just a few blocks from where Tony played baseball as a kid and not far from the mom-and-pop restaurant where he worked in his 20s. He returned to Petoskey (where I summer) on the shores of Lake Michigan decades later to pen a few chapters of his recent cookbook, Kitchen Privileges. We waxed poetic about dreamy summer days, the reassuring comfort of an old family cottage, the healing properties of a slower pace and the inexplicable warmth you get when you return to a place that means so much. It’s this feeling of affection, contentment, peace and enjoyment that he strives to create for his customers through proven recipes and consistently good service. “When you drive up the hill to the cottage, you get a feeling of comfort, safety, simpler and better times - even if there were tough times, it’s welcome.” It’s this feeling he hopes to replicate. During the past year, Tony and his kitchen team have experimented (and honed) a new dish that has proven successful, further cementing the restaurant’s place in diners’ hearts. His carrot cake recipe, popular since he developed the dish in 1971 from a recipe shared with him in

his Air Force days, has long kept diners saving room for dessert. Now, it’s Ridgway’s homemade ice cream that is stealing the show, sending dessert sales skyward. “It’s rich and one scoop - maybe - is just enough,” says Tony. He and his pastry chef Clifford Parris researched the recipe and process. When he bought the ice cream machine, he was advised to look at pre-made mixes to make life easy. “For once, I thought maybe I will do that to make things easier! But, I looked at the ingredients and didn’t see eggs. I didn’t see cream. I didn't see milk.” They combined four recipes - including one from Tony’s favorite restaurants in Burlington, VT and one from a beloved Chicago pasty chef - and they tweaked it, and have been making ice cream for about a year.

WHAT’S NEXT ON THE RIDGWAY MENU? Tony is now working to create a few more reasonably priced entrees. “Beef prices are expected to take a 20 - 30 percent jump so we’re looking at options. Also, a few years ago we gave up what I call the ‘Midwest Triumvirate’ of protein plus a starch plus a vegetable. You don’t need all that - just two,” he says. Expect to see smaller cuts of meat and more vegetable options from Ridgway’s kitchens. He’s been in business for 52 years. “I’ve done it all - from baking to expediting and cooking. One of the things I still love to do is to cook something and cook it very well - with the perfect meat temperature, and texture and arrangements of seasons and ingredients for flavor.” But, do remember to save room for dessert. And fine wine. And don’t forget to smile and be kind. Food tastes better that way. Keep up with Tony and his next culinary adventure at RidgwayBarAndGrill.com.

DRIVING PASSIONS WHAT’S ON THE MIND OF OUR INFLUENCERS THIS MONTH

A R T, F O O D & W INE A ND T HE IR EXCITING CONNECTIVIT Y Marlissa Gardner Emillions Art Food is enjoyed as much by the eye as it is the palate. A magical experience in eating is the result of the creative flavors and artistic vision of the chef who is the creator, designer and content builder of the plate of food. The palette of an artist's creation is as important as the chef’s. Or, as the vintner's choice of land, grape, blend, name and label. Artists such as Jackson Pollock, Picasso (who created an original wine label for Chateau Mouton Rothchild 1973) and Dario Campanile

30

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE

(pictured) all have one thing in common - they are mindful of their content, palette, and message. Some like Dario will pull from their past, and show the evolution with glimpses of the future in their artworks. This is a rare and sought-after type of work due to the ability to keep the balance of all three perspectives. One does not want to reflect too hard on the past, yet wishes to recognize and learn from it…much like vintners and chefs. They all want to be current and as true artists, show something different and unique in their interpretation of what they are presenting.

DRIVING CHANGE Ann Margaret Ross Mercedes Benz of Naples I have been in the luxury car industry for more than 23 years in Naples and have witnessed the car business change drastically over the years. When I first started with BMW there were no laptops and all data collection and retention was done by hand and numbers were also composed on worksheets. There were also no websites or resources available to assist consumers with their purchases.

Then came the internet with information-gathering tools for the dealerships and also information for the consumers about performance, reliability and pricing. Invaluable! I have spent the majority of my career with the Mercedes Benz brand. In the past consumers, could walk on a car lot and pick the vehicle of their choice, Unfortunately, most dealerships have fewer models for immediate purchase now because of the semiconductor shortage. Vehicles are now custom-built exclusively for luxury clients with specific color combinations and options. With today’s rising gas prices, consumers are looking to maximize fuel efficiency, and car makers are designing options with smaller engines and fuel-saving tools such as ECO start-stop feature which will turn off the vehicle when stopped. Also, EV or Electric vehicles are going to triple by 2025 as consumers are looking for longer ranges and the fastest charging times. Technology and self-driving safety are also at the top of mind in the luxury market. As always, luxury and comfort have been a priority for today’s consumers. It’s my pleasure to find what is best for the client and their lifestyle. Mercedes Benz of Naples 239.643.5006 annmargaretross1@gmail.com

We all love houseguests, and with a detached guest cottage, we would love them even more. This home has been meticulously designed by Stofft Cooney for easy resort-like living on nearly two acres and the detached guest house offers the ultimate in privacy. Laura Georgelos is the listing agent and shares an inside look. “Art niches with specialty lighting both inside and outside have been curated to focus on the owner’s collection.
