Girls Run My World

I come from a family of girls. My mom is one of three, my sister and my mom are my best friends, I have been incredibly fortunate to have two daughters of my own, and now my sister has a daughter. (Did you catch all of that?) As cliché as it sounds... we refer to ourselves as the Girl Gang. We are chaotic, laugh really hard, and are each other's safest place and biggest support.

By default, our women's issue has been my favorite issue to work on so far. Nashville is already a place where the community supports it’s own. Add women who are following their dreams to the mix, and the response is electric! I might be biased, but to be a woman means you are resilient and you make things happen; for your family, for your community, and for yourself.

I personally welcome you to the Girl Gang.  This particular issue might be dedicated to the women of our city, but I know highlighting the different female personalities within Music City is a common thread in every issue. I can't help but be proud of the women in this community who inspire me every single day as a mom, wife, and entrepreneur.

ABLE EMPOWERS WOMEN

“A company born out of the need to help liberate and support women.”
FASHION FORWARD | STYLE + BEAUTY
ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLA HARGER
14
“Prioritizing quality and longevity, we find the most eco-conscious materials that stand the test of time and wear.”

ABLE first came to be when Barrett Ward, Founder and CEO of the brand, made it a priority to find a way to create better opportunities for women, who make up 80% of the workers in the fashion industry. At age thirty, he went on a trip to Peru that changed his life forever. Leaving the country with a striking feeling that he was missing the entire point of life, Barrett decided to switch from a career in corporate sales to one in the nonprofit world. Five years later, he moved to Africa with his wife to help provide work for the brilliant women sacrificing themselves to poor working conditions. In 2013, he began teaching women – many of whom had been trafficked – how to make scarves to sell during the holidays. Scarf making is a largely male-dominated industry in Addis Ababa, but with training and dedication, these women sold

over four thousand scarves in just two months. Blown away by the success, Barrett knew they were onto something greater than themselves.

He later became aware of the leather factories in Ethiopia that curated goods with intricate detail and design, which inspired him to transition the work from scarves to leather. Therefore, ABLE began collaborating with manufacturers across the world to create leather pieces of their own, as well as continue to support vendors in other countries and help them grow their own businesses. Putting lots of thought into choosing their manufacturers, ABLE values top-quality products, wage levels, and especially how they care for women in the workplace. ABLE’s website states, “We were the first brand to publish our lowest wages, and we’re big believers that

you don’t have to be perfect before you can be honest. We are continuing to work toward living wages at all our manufacturers, and currently evolving our auditing standards to make sure they align with the values we’ve had since we were founded.”

Their home office in Nashville is made up of 96% women. Sarah Deveney, Director of Partnerships and Projects at ABLE, speaks on what it means to her to be part of an organization that recognizes and celebrates women every day. She shares, “We support each other and collaborate on things. The women that are a part of this company truly make it what it is. We care about each other and about the greater mission of bringing sustainable jobs and a lifestyle to people across the world. Being able to share that with my coworkers says a lot about who we are – it’s all to support each other and uplift each other every day.”

Sarah has a background working in male-dominated organizations, so she explains that making the shift from being one of the only females to being one of many was a very easy jump to make. Highlighting the supportive community she shares with her coworkers, she says, “At ABLE, I can show up every day exactly as I am. I can be me.”

With an array of items from high-quality leather bags, shoes, women's apparel, denim & handmade jewelry, each piece is thoughtfully designed to combine style, function, and fit so you can look good and feel great. Prioritizing quality and longevity, ABLE also makes it their mission to find the most eco-conscious materials that stand the test of time and wear. ABLE also works to create safe, dignified jobs both in Nashville – where their home office, jewelry

studio, and fulfillment center are - and around the world, through their partnerships with value-aligned manufacturers.

“Hiring women and training them in skilled positions like creating jewelry became part of ABLE. To have our jewelry handmade in Nashville is a big piece of who we are.

Supporting women through the same aspect of employment, [providing] sustainable jobs to help their families [like we had in Ethiopia] and being able to do that in Nashville created that connection to where the company is today,” Sarah shares while speaking on their Nashville community.

Together with their customers, they believe they can move the fashion industry forward and show the positive change possible when brands and customers value both the customer and the worker. For more information, visit ableclothing.com

REILLY TOWNSEND

INTERIOR DESIGNER

I am originally from North Carolina. I lived in New York since graduating college; up until 2021, when my husband and I made the move here to Nashville and I opened my own firm. Over the past decade, I have worked for some of the top firms in the industry and am so lucky to have been able to learn and have such support from them as I ventured off on my own. My store includes a selection of antiques, furniture, lighting, fine art, and accessories that is constantly changing. You'll find everything from 19th-century French enfilades to contemporary Italian stainless-steel sculptures. I have been able to cultivate a sense of style that is both minimalist and maximalist, blending bold colors and patterns with curated simplicity. I hope to bring a fresh perspective to modern interiors, drawing from global influences that are rich in history to create spaces that feel collected, sophisticated, and inviting. The best part of my job is making people's houses homes. I want to walk away from a project having made someone feel excited and happy to go home every day. I'm so proud to be a part of a female-dominated industry! @reillytownsend

ALESHA SEBIE

FOUNDER OF ZION BOTANICAL

I am Alesha Sebie. I moved to Nashville 8 years ago to pursue my master's degree at UTK, with the goal of being a therapist for substance abuse and mental health. After I completed my degree, I worked in the service industry while I figured out how I wanted to begin my career. During the pandemic, I began making my home feel more comfortable, and plants created a warmth that I was desiring. At that time, my friend- Kate Ross- was opening the first Hearts location in East Nashville, and asked me to help fill it with plants. Once opened, guests frequently commented on the plant design and plant health; which lead to the beginning of Zion Botanical! Four years later, I'm so proud to say I have maintenance accounts, installations, consultations, and a studio in Germantown that houses plants for upcoming projects and supplies for installations. I am proud to be a black-owned, women-owned business that requires me to be creative, challenge myself, and think outside the box to fulfill client visions. There is a similarity in building a relationship with a space that creates an energy and warmth which then creates a new aesthetic to a space. @zionbotanical

LAUREN HUNGATE SONGWRITER

I'm a songwriter originally from Franklin, TN. I started writing in 2019, and primarily write country music. I signed my first publishing deal with Concord/Chromatic Music in 2021 and since then, have had songs recorded by Bailey Zimmerman, Walker Hayes, Carly Pearce, Elle King, and Mackenzie Porter. I truly love what I do. I cannot believe I get paid to write songs in Nashville. It really is the best job in the world. I love walking into a room with nothing and leaving with three minutes of something. You never know what kind of song you're going to write when you walk into a room and every single session has potential to change your life. When it comes to being a woman in the music industry, it is harder; opportunities are scarcer, and you have to prove yourself a little bit more, but I kind of love that! If you find success, you know that you put in the work and were talented enough to earn your spot. I love Nashville’s energy; it feels laid back and exciting at the same time. What a great place to grow up! @lauren_hungate

NATALIA COOPER

FOUNDER OF THE BUNNY HIVE

I am Natalia Cooper, and I have three young children- ages six, four, and seventeen months. I'm a former elementary school teacher. My husband, Seth, and I have called Nashville home since 2011. During the early stages of motherhood, I would see my friends in Atlanta posting pictures of themselves in an inviting space called The Bunny Hive. Upon further inspection (really, stalking), I realized that Nashville needed an environment such as this. In 2021, I reached out to the founders about bringing this unique concept to Nashville families and in June 2024, it will become a reality! As a thriving city bursting with new families, The Bunny Hive will offer a haven for little ones and their grown-ups. They will have the opportunity to attend unique classes, bond with others in similar stages, and hopefully establish some new connections along the way. Located in Hillsboro Village, the space itself is a charming old home perfect for events, such as birthday parties and baby showers. My family and I are eager to present The Bunny Hive Nashville to Music City and can’t wait for lots of memories and magic to be made! @thebunnyhivenashville

EZRA ACTON

OWNER OF RORI J LASHES

I am a Nashville native. I began my cosmetology career right after graduation, and aspired to be a makeup artist, but quickly found eyelash extensions when they were becoming more popular. Eight years later, not only am I a full-time lash artist, but I am two years into running my studio off of West End! My lashing style differs from a lot of people in the industry. I specialize in textured eyelash extensions; specifically, natural-appearing lash sets that can be transitional between a client who never wears makeup and works out seven days a week, or a client who is constantly on film or stage and in full glam every day. The day before my daughter was born, Rori J Lashes LLC was born. I think what I strive for the most is for women to feel supported by one another, to have compassion and an understanding for each other, and encourage each other to grow creatively and constantly continue to learn. I love working and living on the west side. The community and little Saturday morning farmers markets are one of my favorite parts of this city! @rorijlashes

SAVOR LIFE & FIND YOUR True Wealth

Indulge in Tuscan serenity, savor life’s richness, and rediscover yourself

The soft morning light filters through the curtains as you awake to birdsong and a gentle breeze. Stepping onto the balcony, you behold endless vineyards rippling in the Tuscan hills and can’t believe this paradise is real.

Walking downstairs, you’re greeted by many new faces of people smiling and excited to see you, new friends, gathered around a long wooden table immaculately set with steaming quiche, luscious fruit, warm bread, and Italian cappuccino.

This is just the beginning of days spent practicing yoga in nature’s rhythms, discovering ancient towns, and pausing to savor beauty at every turn.

If you can envision waking up like this, you’re ready for a yoga retreat with Scott Moore.

Retreats are an investment—in your truest self—the part of you that gets lost in the rush of daily life.

We frequently invest our money into stocks, bonds, and real estate, yet fail to invest in the one irreplaceable resource that makes it all possible, ourselves—our true wealth.

On this journey, all details have been meticulously planned so you can stay within your budget and fully relax into the experience.

After immersing in the richness of the present moment, slowing down and savoring life, you’ll return replenished and ready to bring this mindset of appreciation into your everyday world.

Reap the returns of a broadened perspective and renewed vitality—the dividends are endless.

Find out more about upcoming retreats with Scott Moore in destinations like Tuscany, Sardinia, Bordeaux, and the French Riviera at scottmooreyoga.com/retreats .

MEET BRILEY KING, OWNER OF LITTLE BIRD TRUCKING

MAKER’S STUDIO | ENTERTAINMENT
28

A LOOK INSIDE THE UNIQUE, BOLD, WESTERN-INSPIRED TRUCKER HATS HAND-MADE BY BRILEY KING.

Briley King is the daughter of a long-haul trucker, the wife to a touring musician, and the heart behind Little Bird Trucking. Born and raised in North Carolina, Briley was taught the importance of drive and dedication at a very young age. At seven years old, her parents told her if she wanted to take singing lessons, she would have to fund the money herself. That day, she cut the top off a milk jug and sang on the street until she raised enough money to do so. Her work ethic later earned her a degree in Communications from East Carolina University, where she began working in Corporate Litigation before moving into finance.

A true daddy’s girl, Briley recalls the awe she felt when her dad would come home after long days on the road as a truck driver. “He came in like a superhero… I danced, sang, did gymnastics, theater, basketball, softball - anything I could get involved in growing up - and my dad was always my biggest fan.” This year, her dad will be hitting four million miles out on the road.

For her thirtieth birthday, Briley planned an evening out with friends to go to a Marcus King concert. She only knew a few songs – one, specifically, that she noted helped get her through a hard breakup. After the show, Marcus found a post she made on Instagram and immediately messaged her, inviting her to another one of his concerts. “I walked on his tour bus wearing a big, huge caftan and Mignonne Gavigan bird earrings,” she shares. “I said, ‘What’s up, y’all, I look like Big Bird,’ and Marcus looked at me and said, ‘No, you’re a little bird.’”

CONTINUED > 29 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MUSICCITY MAY 2024
Briley on stage with her husband, Marcus King.

After a night of singing and dancing, Marcus told Briley to quit her job and marry him, but it had always been instilled in her to have her own thing going - her own identity – even when she was to get married. Seven months later, the lovebirds were engaged and living in Nashville. While in a bliss - between life on the road, planning the wedding, and getting to watch her fiancé pursue his dream - Briley was up at all hours, taking phone calls in different time zones, sending emails, and beginning to brainstorm a career that allowed her to be creative and align with life on the road.

While living on the tour bus, and unsure of when she would be able to wash and style her hair next, trucker hats became a wardrobe staple for her. She started collecting them through eBay, vintage stores, gas stations, merch stands, friends, and beyond. One night, while Marcus was on stage in his signature feather cowboy hat, Briley had the idea to make her own trucker hats detailed with a feather. When it comes to the design and style, Briley shares, “I love color! [I enjoy] putting neutral-colored feathers on to lilac, pink, red, and blue hats to encourage the wear of more color... keeping it preppy, girly, and fun has always been a priority for me.”

After the pair wed in February of 2023, Briley began pouring her heart into making these hats for herself, her family, and her friends. Once she posted videos to social media wearing dresses, heels, and her new trucker hat – styled in what she refers to as “things that don’t look like they should go together” – people began taking note of her signature look and asking how they could get a hat of their own, giving Briley the motivation to share Little Bird Trucking with the world.

“I SAID, ‘WHAT’S UP, Y’ALL, I LOOK LIKE BIG BIRD,’ AND MARCUS LOOKED AT ME AND SAID, ‘NO, YOU’RE A LITTLE BIRD.’”
31 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MUSICCITY MAY 2024

Briley hand-makes every hat, usually around two hundred per day, in addition to boxing up packages, shipping each order, handling all customer inquiries, and running the social media account. She has gotten to collaborate with the iconic Houston Rodeo, celebrities, and - to make it all full circle - Mignonne Gavigan, the designer of the earrings she wore the night she met Marcus. With many accomplishments and orders to all fifty states, her absolute favorite part is watching others rock their Little Bird Trucking gear. She also acknowledges she couldn’t do it without her incredible USPS mail carrier, Samantha Knox, who has gone above and beyond to help her with each order.

While the idea behind starting a trucker hat company began as an ode to her dad, it has since flourished into reflecting many aspects of her own life. Birds have always signified a lot to Briley; in addition to always having a fascination for Cardinals, her grandfather loved birds. She shares, “he had a chair by the window and a bird I.D. book… all day, he would sit on his porch and identify the birds that would come to the bird feeder.” Ten days after Briley and Marcus met, her grandfather passed away. She adds that Marcus and her grandmother have an incredible relationship, and that she truly believes her grandfather sent Marcus to not only her, but her whole family.

From the feather design to the name of each product - which are inspired by the titles of Marcus’ songs – the thought and love that goes into each item does not go unnoticed.
