LIFESTYLE LETTER

Styling And Smiling This year, fashion is still focusing on comfort, sustainability and individuality. I, for one, am glad that athleisure is still popular, including swishy, nylon outerwear. And it's fun to see sporty wraparound shades taking center stage, along with beat-up baseball caps as lives well-lived. I've heard that good old, six-pocket cargo shorts are making a comeback. Whatever your fashion style is, have a good time expressing yourself. In this edition, we also spotlight other aspects of style, such as in hair, fitness, skin care and architecture. Please consider supporting A Wig's Story annual fundraiser. The event, An Artisan Affair, is scheduled for Sept. 13, starting at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Slick Pig BBQ , 1920 E. Main St. This nonprofit group provides free wigs to individuals with medical hair loss, often due to cancer, to restore their confidence and to share in their stories of transformation and empowerment. The fundraiser will include artisan creations from 20-plus curated makers, great food and music, running through 8 p.m.

Bombshells Hair Studio Celebrates 15 Years Of Services, Client Relationships, Community Support

Building a salon on excellence within an authentic, warm and encouraging atmosphere has been the mission for the past 15 years of Michelle Williamson, owner and master stylist of Bombshells Hair Studio in Murfreesboro. When opening Bombshells in 2010, Michelle says she set a goal to offer guests the utmost in hair and salon services. "We placed a strong focus on training and ensuring clients always leave feeling satisfied. Now, sometimes clients stop by, outside of their appointments, just to have coffee and chat." (Pssst, by the way, the salon offers gourmet coffee from local Raphael’s Roastery.)

2. Continuing education is a keystone at this salon, and will continue to be. 3. Coaching, goal setting and accountability are practiced through monthly meetings. 4. Of 12 team meetings held each year, at least eight include presentations and tips from industry educators and trainers. 5. Bombshells was recognized as one of "America's Fastest Growing Salons" by Salon America. 6. Michelle's daughter, Bethany, has worked at the salon since she was 16 years old. 7. Michelle ensures the salon's work environment is safe, healthy and sustainable while allowing for individual stylist creativity. 8. The salon's culture prioritizes a true sense of team as a flexible place where beauty professionals grow both personally and professionally. CONTINUED >

She states she's proud the business is rooted in empowerment and purpose. While Michelle intentionally invested through the years in coaching other stylists and finetuning an internal mentorship program, she and the team consistently achieved a variety of accomplishments noticed externally, as evidenced by the following 15 examples. 1. Operating the 501(c)(3) nonprofit 'A Wigs Story,' through which the salon purchases high-quality wigs or headwear to provide on a complimentary basis, along with professional hair services, to those experiencing hair loss from effects of cancer. Tilina Hill is co-founder and chairs the organization; Olivia Hale is other co-founder, along with Michelle. The mission is to restore a sense of normalcy, dignity and self-confidence to cancer-fighters. Over time, they've provided 150 wigs. The group's annual fundraiser, An Artisan Affair, is slated for Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Slick Pig BBQ , 1920 E. “BOMBSHELLS HAIR STUDIO WAS NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 22 KEUNE SALONS IN NORTH AMERICA FOR THE SECOND QUARTER OF THIS YEAR. WE COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT OUR AMAZING TEAM AND INCREDIBLE CLIENTS WHO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE EVERY SINGLE DAY.” ~MICHELLE WILLIAMSON 9. Many of the salon's stylists have worked there for quite some time; in fact, Carrie recently celebrated her 12th year and Casi her 11th year. 10. Michelle encourages and demonstrates to stylists how to become financially self-sufficient and to establish a work/ life balance. 11. Bombshells has received several national and local accolades, including being named one of the Top 200 Salons in America and a multi-year winner of Rutherford County’s Ruthies Award for Favorite Hair Salon. 12. The salon is ranked as the No. 1 Keune salon throughout Tennessee. 13. Team members support the local community by volunteering for initiatives, such as Operation Thank You with the Rutherford County Chamber. 14. One factor that sets the salon apart is the way they combine high-level artistry with deep community impact by giving back through several charitable initiatives, such as raising funds for MSA research. 15. The salon has an emotional support pup, Gretta Boo. Michelle started as a solo stylist and now has 14 stylists bolstering the salon: Bethany Warrick, Carrie Raines, Casi Brown, Tina Diedrick, Kayla Detullio, Dus, Ashley Tejada, Hannah Beasley, Rachel Spann, Missy May, Brianna Nowlin, Ericka Roberts, Courtney Parker-Nather and Amber Anduha. Some factors come full circle at the salon. Michelle says she became Rachel's stylist when Rachel was 13 years old. Now after coaching Rachel through cosmetology school and buying her first pair of shears, Rachel anchors her hair care services from Bombshell, too. "She's my 'hair baby,'" Michelle quips. As a multifaceted artist, Rachel shines behind the chair with expertise in blonding, formal styling and modern cuts like the

shag and wolf cut. "From crafting personalized fascinators for derby season to creating flawless makeup looks, she brings a distinctive flair to every project," says Michelle. "She’s also a go-to for event planning, with a love for decorating balloon arches, styled tablescapes and themed displays." Rachel’s colleagues indicate her talent lies in bringing beauty, balance and inspiration to every space she touches. Another Bombshells designer/stylist colleague, Courtney, is an artistic force with a bold spirit and deep love for creative color, assures Michelle. While Courtney's known for her eccentric style and vivid color mastery, her heart surprisingly leans toward the timeless classics: balayage, blonding and naturally dimensional hues. "Courtney's approach to hair is both intuitive and intentional, blending technical skill with genuine care. Whether she’s painting a rainbow or refining a sun-kissed blonde, Courtney’s ultimate goal is always to make every guest feel beautiful, relaxed and completely at ease," says Kayla DeTullio, Bombshells salon coordinator. "At the core of our salon is a commitment to lifting up others, whether it’s clients in our chairs, team members behind the chair or the community around us," assures Michelle, based on her 29-year career. 615.907.8004 BoroBombshells.com

NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO FIND PERFECT EXERCISE MATCH ABOUND THROUGH MURFREESBORO PARKS AND RECREATION PROGRAM ARTICLE BY LYNN CALDWELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MURFREESBORO PARKS AND RECREATION

16

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FIT N E SS

Whether young or old, a fitness pro, just getting started in wellness or somewhere in between, Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation offerings have something enjoyable, suitable and helpful for everyone at various facilities. The community locations, Patterson Park Community Center, Sports*Com and McFadden Community Center, have been beloved facilities for years. But one notation that people may not realize is the immense number of parks and recreation-hosted classes and programs that are offered throughout the week. The staff works hard to stay up-to-date on fitness trends and what's warranted for the local, specific population of guests. Part of their process is reaching out and asking for suggestions to verify what activity opportunities people believe they need. Amy Myers, a health and wellness fitness coordinator at Patterson Park Community Center, shares, “Since I was young, I’ve always been into health and fitness. As a fitness professional and as a mom, I've continued to enjoy exercising and finding ways of staying active. I love helping people find what activities,

classes or movement they like and what works for them, so that they can improve their overall health and ultimately increase their longevity.” For beginners, there are classes such as Alignment & Mobility, Retro Fit and Step & Tone. Staffers also offer Sit & Get Fit and Forever Fit to help others begin moving again or even for the first time. Many of these classes include options, such as using weights to add intensity or not, based on one's personal development and considerations. Classes such as Zumba, Yoga, Strong, Jazzercise and Metabolic Burn are great for intermediate and advanced levels because they can be adjusted to individual needs. There also are seven various water aerobics courses, including the very popular, energy-oriented Ai-Chi. Whatever one's fitness style may be, it's a great time to try something new and find that perfect match. And, don’t forget: there's always pickleball as an option. MurfreesboroParks.com

While Pure Glow's medical, holistic skin care team can provide laser treatments, body sculpting, aesthetic services or lash and brow assistance, it's often their individualized, stylish 'red carpet-ready' med spa treatment that clients seek. "We handle skin care differently by getting to the root of skin concerns, not just treating symptoms. By combining holistic care with advanced medical treatments, we create personalized plans that bring lasting results, with some serious relaxation, too," says MarthaMarie Edwards, Pure Glow owner/aesthetician. "We help clients meet their best skin." With the shifting season after summer sun exposure, Martha-Marie says it's a perfect time to secure facials. When faces feel dull, congested or noticeably changed, they're asking for attention. Now's also good timing for transforming facial vibrancy with upcoming holiday parties. "Our facials are more than skin care. They’re a chance to achieve deeper changes, reset your nervous system, reconnect with yourself, and leave feeling radiant inside and out," explains Martha-Marie, a second-generation Murfreesboro native who incorporated global living into her analysis of the best techniques for improving skin care over the past 25 years. In fact, she devised a Pure Glow Original: the Buccal Sculpting Facelift, as a high-intensity workout for all 43 facial muscles to yield immediate results. This signature treatment combines facial massage techniques from Japan, Hungary, Russia, Dubai and Paris while incorporating universal methods, such as acupressure, tapotement and lymphatic massage, to create more complete facelifting effects. Martha-Marie says Pure Glow has the first set of professionals in Tennessee to be certified in the Buccal technique, remaining the only local source for it. She says it helps lift cheek bones and jowls, while releasing jawline tension for TMJ sufferers. She adds it increases circulation, and enhances the contour of facial muscles while bringing overall structure of faces back to their youthful place. "Whether someone's looking for a glamorous glow or a big reset, we have a facial to help," she assures. Appointments at the spa in Murfreesboro, 308 Uptown Square, come with complimentary chocolate and water in private rooms. 615.955.1777 PureGlowRefinery.com S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “Your home’s the setting for memories, where you live and love.”

Residential Designer Jamie Taylor / Photo by Angel Pardue

For two decades, local residential designer Jamie Taylor has used her passion for clean architectural styles to develop standout custom homes, restore charm to home renovations and provide cohesive collaboration with clients, builders and interior designers. "My personal design style is eclectic. I could feel just as at home in a contemporary glass box in California as I would in a traditional Southern home in Charleston,” she reflects. “I’ve always been drawn to the clean lines of mid-century design and the timeless work of architects like Frank Lloyd Wright." After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in interior design, she worked for a design firm doing architectural work in 2002. But when the recession hit in 2008, she says she took a job

working at a local lumber company, Husky Truss and Building Supply. “That’s where I quickly started to understand the structural nature of a home; how it’s built. I gained hands-on experience analyzing house plans for structural engineering, material takeoffs and truss design." At the lumber company was where Jamie honed her ability to create both an aesthetically pleasing home and a structurally sound home. Then, in 2009, she started J Taylor Designs, based on forging trusting relationships with homeowners and builders. "Designing a home is a personal experience for me; I want to make sure the homeowners’ wants and wishes are satisfied, their budget is respected, and the building process is smooth, accurate and up to code," she adds. Making brand new homes look historical is one of her specialties. “Honoring the homeowner’s vision is always the priority, but I pride myself on staying true to the architectural style,” she says. “Whether it’s a farmhouse or a mid-century home, it should reflect the spirit of that style. The details matter.” She says before each project she meets with each client to guide them through finding their design style as well as to determine how to carefully craft the floor plan to suit their needs. "We discuss what their home goals are. Initial consultations are typically casual conversations in which we take the time to get to know every need and desire you would like to see in your new home. We also discuss desired construction budgets, possible builders and any site restrictions. A beautiful home design can only become a reality if all aspects of the process are considered." After those first conversations, Jamie and her team move into the design phase for both interior and exterior façade floor plans, both of which are based on individual personalities, styles and needs of homeowners. Floor plan design has been an interest of hers since she was 12 years old. "I like rearranging spaces to see

“I like rearranging spaces to see not only how layouts look, but how they feel.” not only how a layout looks but how it feels. I spent hours laying out rooms and designing spaces on graph paper as a child, so it was no surprise that interior design and architecture would be my career path of choice," Jamie states. She says clients' final plans include exterior façade drawings with material specs, foundation with footer details, roof layout, floor plans, framing details and any other specs for specific to each home. Now Jamie says the majority of her projects come from referrals, and are headquartered from her office at 310 Uptown Square.

WHAT’S NEW SALON & BARBER TEAM DELIVERS INNOVATIVE, STYLE-SAVVY MEN’S GROOMING

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE BULLOCK PHOTOGRAPHY

While 2025 National Beauty and Barber Week will be observed Sept. 8-14, every day is a perfect time to celebrate barber services in Murfreesboro at What's New Salon & Barber, 412 Uptown Square. As a family owned and operated business, launched by Steve and Sandy Haynes, and joined by their son, Nick, and daughter-in-law, Lindsey Haynes, they assist men with top haircuts and grooming styles. Specifically, they provide haircuts with shampoo, haircuts with beard care, beard trims and shaping, as well as gray blending. "I’ve had a beard for 11 years, and have helped many clients shape and grow their beards out. The correct beard products and maintenance is key in growing out a beard," confirms Nick. In fact, identifying the correct hair products that work with individual hair textures and styles is critical to achieve the desired looks overall that men are wanting, he adds. From cuts to color, the stylists at What’s New Salon and Barber work diligently to stay on top of education and industry trends for men, women and kids. The team there have built a collaborative atmosphere while striving for excellence and making their clients feel truly comfortable. Nick says all men are talking about tapers, including low- and mid- versions. A taper haircut for men is a hairstyle where the hair gradually shortens from the top of the head down to the sides and back, creating a smooth transition from longer hair on top to shorter hair at the neckline and around the ears. Fade haircuts, including tapers, reportedly gained prominence during the 1940s and 1950s due to military grooming standards. As soldiers returned from service, they brought these types of haircuts with them into civilian fashion. "We're doing a lot of tapers paired with a messy look on top," Nick adds.

Regional and national trends in men's haircuts, as cited by industry sources, indicate interests also in embracing texture as well as natural hair movement; low maintenance/high style cuts; "bro flows;" defined curl cuts; modern pompadours; tapered afros; refined side parts; hybrid cuts with modern takes on classic looks; specialized beard shampoos; angular facial trims; clean beard grow-outs; eco-friendly products; client education; beard and mustache tailored grooming ascending into an art form; enhanced or elevated salon visits; barbershops becoming more of a community hub and conversation space; and advanced barbering tools with energy-efficiency or technology adding extra benefits. He says he personalizes appointments with clients by taking time to determine exactly what they're wanting and not rushing to the next person. "This is why I enjoy working based on appointments. This way we have the time we need." Nick believes their barbershop has a laid-back feel, but it’s also more of an upscale feeling as well. There’s a leather couch and bar stools to sit on while waiting for an appointment. "Country music will more than likely be playing in the background. And there's a TV and dart board to keep clients occupied while waiting." What’s New Salon & Barber has been a staple of Murfreesboro for more than 45 years. Working in the industry since the late 1970s, Steve and Sandy have witnessed many changes in both hairstyles and how salons are owned and operated. Over the

decades they found themselves continually expanding as their stylists, services and client lists grew. At one point, they oversaw two buildings including spa services. However, like many local companies, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused them to re-evaluate their business model and make a shift back to their core hair-related services. Nick has been cutting hair since 2009. "I absolutely love what I do. It’s truly a family business! My son has started here this summer and plans to continue through the school year as well. He’s helping us clean up and sweep hair," he says. "We're thrilled to have him here with us. When we’re not at work we love to travel and go to car shows." The group's full-service hair salon services clients in Murfreesboro, MTSU, Smyrna, LaVergne, Nashville, Manchester, Blackman, Woodbury, Lebanon, Franklin and Nolensville. In addition, they offer waxing, hair extensions, bridal speciality services and gift certificates. They have daily hours except for Sundays and Mondays. The Haynes say their salon is widely known and respected for integrity, family values and strong commitment to education, a reputation of which they take pride. 615.890.5020 WhatsNewTheSalon.com

HOME BUYING, SELLING AND INVESTORS ME E T I SAM My goal is to make the buying and selling process easier for everyone in Middle TN. I love learning the stories of why people are moving. From the family that just added their third baby to the empty nesters who are looking to downsize their home. This is a life changing event and one of the most stressful times in someone’s life. My goal is to make it as easy as possible by educating you on the process and giving you the tools to be successful.
