LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness A new year brings with it a sense of renewal, a fresh start, or another chance to reach a goal. Celebrating a new beginning can feel exciting and at the same time, it can feel daunting. We are all very familiar with the “new year, new me” crowd; the ones who seem to be able to pull a goal out of their hat and stick to it. Whether you thrive in the wake of a New Year’s resolution or flunk it, it’s important to remember that at the core, a resolution is really just a search for balance. In our Health & Wellness Issue, we highlight different layers of health. Being “well” is multifaceted and interlaced to include the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. And if we are to be resolute in the areas of our lives that pertain to health, then we must be patient with ourselves and give ourselves the grace of knowing that achieving a healthy balance takes time and is ongoing. A resolution to better health and wellness begins with hope and is fueled by fortitude. Recent years have taught me that when it comes to searching for a healthy balance, there is no quick fix. And progress isn’t always linear. If you decide to make a resolution towards better health and wellness, lean into the process. Make practical changes that you can stick with, accept the downfalls, and know that the first step is the most important. Welcome to the new year! We’re rooting for you!

HOW DR. K.L. BURNS REALIZED AND ACHIEVED HER DREAM OF PROVIDING A PEACEFUL DENTISTRY EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE
PURSUE YOUR PASSION 10
FAM ILY CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
Dr. K.L. Burns was a latecomer into dentistry but, if you spend just a few minutes talking with her, it’s obvious she has found her calling. After completing her undergraduate degree, she was chatting with some colleagues in their mid-to-late 40s who all had stories of
of the Health Service Corp helping in underserved areas. She later moved back to Tennessee to be closer to her family and worked in private practices as an associate dentist. From this experience, she recognized that she wouldn’t be truly happy in her profes-
regret. Burns was determined not to suffer the same fate. She had always considered dental school, and this was the revelation that pushed her to apply. At the University of Tennessee, Burns was one of the only female students and older than the majority of her classmates, but she was committed to proving herself. Unfortunately, during her second year, she suffered a broken back after being struck in a head-on car accident. She was advised to drop out and return later but she persevered and completed the program. She says it was one of the best things she’s ever done for herself. Dr. Burns has been a dentist for 15 years. She began her career working in public health, first in Missouri and later in Philadelphia. She was also a member
sion until she was working for herself. The vision for Serenity Smiles first came to Burns 3 years ago but wasn’t actualized until May 2023. She happened across the location on North Thompson Lane by accident after it had been recently vacated by another practitioner. With this office, she was able to see her dreams become reality. The space is very serene with aromatherapy, water features, and soft music. Her passion for helping underserved populations remains. They often have a significant amount of fear surrounding a visit to the dentist but the atmosphere at Serenity Smiles helps put them at ease. Burns says it's not uncommon to have patients fall asleep from being so relaxed. For those with more severe anxiety,
“DON’T BE AFRAID TO STEP OUT ON FAITH AND FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS.”

nitrous oxide or mild sedation is available. One testimonial reads, “If I could give them unlimited stars I would. The peacefulness that you walk into is amazing!” Dr. Burns’ top priority is always getting the patient out of pain first. Mrs. Paul shares, “Dr. Burns doesn’t want anyone in pain. She is a gentle soul and you can tell she truly loves her profession!” In addition to cleanings, simple extractions, and root canals, they offer teeth whitening, Fastbraces®, and Botox. Serenity Smiles is also one of the only practices in the area that accepts TennCare. Burns prides her office on providing everyone with a top notch experience no matter what insurance they have. She’s also passionate about taking care of busy moms and women who neglect their own self-care by hosting special events for them each month. While Dr. K.L. Burns took a non-traditional route to dentistry and starting her own practice, she says it has been quite rewarding. She frequently encourages others to follow their dreams and pursue their own mission in life.

Hidden in the hills just outside of Knoxville, TN is my home away from home. The place where historic heirloom seeds have been grown, harvested, and preserved through generations and served with love in a world-class restaurant. Blackberry Farm was built by Florida and David Lasier in 1940 and opened in May 1941. In 1952, the Lasiers sold the property to the Jarvis family who subsequently sold it to Ruby Tuesday restaurant founder Sandy Beall and his wife Kreis. I was given the absolute gift of a lifetime when I was invited by the Lamar Alexander family to come Kristy Osmunson of country duo, American Young, Photo credit: Dove Shore for a stay at the family's estate that neighbors the farm and write songs for Curb Records. My band, American Young, wrote our song “Point of View" sitting at the peaceful creek that separates the two properties. Our producer and co-writer, Lee Brice, pulled the picnic table down into the creek so we could soak our feet in the cool shallows and write songs to our hearts' content. We celebrated another number-one song for Lee with the most spectacular dinner I have ever had in my life. In the wine cellar of Blackberry Farm, a delightful tempo of courses was served with a pairing of world-class wine and farm-to-table food that was a mastered symphony of cuisine for the palate. My life’s work has been to inspire positive vision through music in as many countries and cultural atmospheres as the spirit has allowed. I have eaten my way through meals that have imprinted the universal language of music and the melodies of flavors, traditions, and tastes that only come through heritage food. Blackberry Farm is Tennessee’s flavor love language. It is the food version of the Grand Ole Opry, served with an intelligence that only farmers and food growers can afford. One cannot help but fall in love with the slow, soft, gentle tuning fork that is the natural pace of meandering your way around the Farm through the pastures for a barn visit or a horseback ride, or a waterfall-chasing hike to the top of the hills for a breathtaking Tennessee vantage point. Stop in for a treatment at the Wellhouse for a signature facial or a duo scalp and foot massage. Balance your soul with an Appalachian body purification treatment and learn ancient Cherokee secrets for unlocking Galvlati, or ‘heaven’ with a four-handed relaxation massage. Eco-Fin healing heat therapy, CBD treatments, Theragun percussive therapy, and Hydrafacils are offered, as well as feet and nail care, and any hair experiences you may be seeking. “True harmony of body and soul can only be achieved when we embrace a whole-life approach to wellness, an approach that balances rest, activity, pleasure and nourishment.” The Farm offers strength and fitness classes, cardio, barre, stretch, and release, as well as outdoor fitness stations for timed interval training. Dance instruction, aqua fit, pilates, meditation, and mindfulness with an array of yoga offerings are available, or if you would rather… grab a pole and go fly fishing! Join a Farmstead guide in a comprehensive tour of the working areas of the vegetable gardens and heritage livestock pasture gaining an understanding of the production in the Dairy Barn and Larder, or visit the kennels where the famous Lagotto Romagnolo dogs are raised. At the end of the tour, enjoy a sampling of Farmstead cheeses, meats, preserves, and beer. I pray you are able to enjoy this slice of heaven that inspires our cultural Tennessee trademarks the way I did. Your life will be enriched, strengthened, and enhanced because of your visit!

Low Energy Neurofeedback System Therapy in action. Photo credit: Penny Rawls Photography

When you think of ‘taking care of yourself,’ it’s likely that you would think of exercise, skincare, and other physical manifestations of health and vitality. However, the brain, the organ that controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger, and every other process that regulates your body, is often neglected. Given the complex load of this computer-like organ, it would certainly behoove us to take care of it with some degree of attention and consistency – perhaps in a similar manner to the maintenance practices (facials, manicures, going to the gym, etc.) that we employ for the sake of our appearance. LENS therapy provides one such option for taking care of your brain. LENS stands for Low Energy Neurofeedback System – it’s an EEG form of therapy that can stimulate the brain to reset itself and help it achieve optimal performance. Sheri Rowney, licensed LENS practitioner and managing director of Nashville’s Harmonized Brain Center, explains that “stress, anxiety, and depression disrupt normal brain patterns, which causes the brain to function ineffectively. So just like re-tuning a radio when you lose the signal, LENS Neurofeedback helps refocus the brain into the correct patterns.” While it certainly sounds promising, you’d be forgiven for having some reservations. Hooking your brain up to a machine can sound a little sci-fi, and perhaps painful. However, LENS does not employ electric shock or anything of the sort. LENS utilizes small sensors that send a low-energy radio wave (with less energy than what is emitted by a cell phone). Upon first visiting HBC, clients
are given a 21-site mapping, which provides them an overview of how efficiently their brain waves are working and whether there are any irregularities. This helps HBC formulate a plan for how to move forward in subsequent sessions. These sessions are no more than 15 to 30 minutes in length, and Rowney says clients begin to see results after just a few visits. And judging by the testimonials of clients, these sessions are not just effective, but life changing. Though LENS can be helpful for anybody (Rowney counts toddlers, seniors, and even animals as clients), individuals who suffer from depression, anxiety, psychological issues, ADHD, dementia, and even brain injuries seem to benefit particularly. Though Rowney cautions that LENS is, ‘not a panacea,’ those with the aforementioned conditions tend to respond very well. Rowney has even observed that LENS effectively treats what she terms as, ‘COVID brain fog.’ Observing this phenomenon, she explains, “If they had contracted the virus, we saw in many cases how it affected the way their brain functioned. Many people complained that COVID had left them feeling, unmotivated, unfocused, difficulty with concentration or with continuing headaches and many other long-term effects. We could see from the brain maps that we produce through LENS Neurofeedback precisely these COVID related effects, and in many cases were able to help get people back to normal with the help of this therapy.” In addition to the more quotidian causes of brain changes, Rowney treats many players in the NFL, NHL, and MLS

who regularly suffer from concussions. “It has proved exceptionally effective at resetting the brain after such bangs to the head!” Rowney observed this firsthand when her nephew suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). “It was my brother's search for help with his son’s TBI that led him to find LENS Neurofeedback,” she recounts. “He’d heard of its positive effects on injuries, such as his son had suffered, and decided to try the therapy to see if it would help. Even after several years of trying many other therapies, the effects of LENS on my nephew were extremely positive and enabled him to improve his speaking and other TBI related issues.” This was the impetus for Rowney’s brother to open his own LENS neurofeedback therapy center – and having observed the powerful effect that LENS had on somebody she loved, Rowney also decided to open her own therapy center in Nashville. Over the past few years, HBC has helped an impressive 1,500 clients in Nashville and now they have expanded into Murfreesboro, where countless lives stand to be made happier and healthier. Giving your most hardworking organ a little TLC – well, that’s a no brainer.

DI S C OV E R J O R DA N Explore the Natural Beaut y and Culture of This Strikingly Beautiful Countr y
Situated in West Asia lies the magnificent country of Jordan. Filled with culture, history, and stunning landscapes, Jordan is stunningly beautiful and a true jewel of the Middle East. With its Mars-like appearance--which has often been used for filming locations for space movies— exploring the spectacular area of Wadi Rum in southern Jordan is the experience of a lifetime. The gradient warm hues of vivid red-orange sand and massive rock formations are something to behold. This desert area is best experienced by staying overnight at a Bedouin camp. Even if it’s just for a night or two, spending time out in this vast desert area
is a truly incredible experience. Driving out to the camp on a bench in the back of a pickup truck is a wild adventure in itself—especially for those who choose to include a stop to give sandboarding a try—as the landscape seems to stretch on forever. The windows in the simple tents of these Bedouin camps have million-dollar views, but are usually extremely affordable, costing less than $50 a night. The only thing more beautiful than the views is the welcoming hospitality of the people who operate them. As they invite visitors to experience their culture, staying in a Bedouin camp can include homemade meals of the most delicious local cuisine.

A traditional Zarb dinner of meat and vegetables is placed on a metal rack and cooked in a dug-out hole and enjoyed around a table with new friends from around the world. The surreal desert landscape is almost even more magical at night as stories are shared, and games are played as a form of after-dinner entertainment in the caves in the nearby rock formations. Music and dancing around a campfire are the purest form of connection regardless of language barriers as the warm glow of the firelight illuminates smiles and brings out laughter and everyone’s best selves under skies of stars. A trip to Jordan wouldn’t be complete without a stop in Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This ancient civilization carved into rock is so unbelievably well preserved and is incredible to witness. With many trails to hike to different areas such as the monastery, treasury, and tombs, multiple days can easily be spent taking in this archeological marvel. Driving to the Dead Sea is a juxtaposition from Wadi Rum and Petra, as the warm hues of the desert transition to the cool blue of the water. Being the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea is a stop that should be on any Jordan itinerary. With such a high salt content, floating in this water is almost a bizarre experience, since swimmers have to practically work to keep their feet on the ground because of how easy it is to float. With so much beauty, history, and culture, one could easily spend weeks enjoying this incredible country by adding time in the mountains and exploring all of the areas Jordan has to offer. But for those who only have a few days, this country can easily be added on to a trip to Egypt as it is a relatively short flight of just a few hours from Cairo to Amman. Covering Petra, the Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum can be done in a four-day trip, so be sure to add it to your bucket list and enjoy everything this beautiful country has to offer.
Photo One: If you stay overnight in a desert camp, don’t miss the amazing colors of the sunrise and sunset! The sunlight combined with the warm hues of the desert is simply enchanting!
Photo Two: A trip out to Wadi Rum wouldn’t be complete without giving sandboarding a try! While it may feel similar to snowboarding, trading in fresh white powder for smooth orange sand creates quite a different experience.
Photo Three: Jordan’s Wadi Rum has been used as a filming location for many movies set in outer space because of its Mars-like appearance.
Photo Four: The ancient civilization of Petra— one of the Seven Wonders of the World— is a must-see stop on any trip to Jordan.

Small Sustainable Habits Create Gentler Days
The alarm clock goes off and you hit snooze for the third time, or maybe that was the fourth. You roll over thinking of the twenty different things on your to-do list. Here are four small habits I incorporate at night to make the mornings seem less like a chore and more like a day worth starting. Small, practical habits can pack a big punch!

1. Create a sustainable nightly routine. One example might be starting the dishwasher and washing machine before bed each night. An empty sink and laundry room floor will quickly become a welcoming sight in the morning.
Small Habits To H e l p W i t h Busy Mornings Setting yourself up for a gentler morning eventually leads to calm evenings. And these changes in habit don’t have to be drastic in order to make a difference, they just need to be consistent. You’ve got this!

2. Get others involved. Assigning a job to people in the home will not only give you less workload but also an important sense of responsibility to younger ones. 3. Ready, set, tidy! Discover the power of time blocking and set a timer to see how much can be done in 15 to 20 minutes (You might be surprised!) Take it up a notch by including littles and make it a game. 4. Prepare Yourself. Set up the morning at night! This could mean having the kids’ school clothes out, water bottles filled, or field trip forms signed and ready to go. It’s small things like this that allow for more mental rest in the mornings and a brighter day ahead.
