LIFESTYLE LETTER
Let's hear it for the ladies!
As a little girl, it didn’t take me long to understand how deeply the women of my life would impact me and undoubtedly direct my path. My mother, my grandmothers, sisters, my aunts and even sister-in-love have all truly made an impact on my life as a woman, mother, friend, wife, and sister. I am overwhelmed with gratitude on a daily basis by how many amazing women I am surrounded by. We dedicate this month and this issue to the women who make a difference in our lives and community.
Our publication is uniquely run by some fantastic women that I am thankful to also call my friends and sisters in business. Without all of our heads, hearts, and hands in this, our publication wouldn't sparkle the way that it does.
With Mother’s Day this month, of course, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers, it's also about the "mother" figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing extraordinary things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
I'll never forget one of my elementary school teachers. She had a whimsical air about her. She loved horseback riding and maintained a family farm outside of school. She enriched my yearning for history and the importance of understanding and respecting those who came before us, which of course, mirrored the principles I learned at home. Sometimes we don't realize until much later in life, how valuable those people are. They are in your journey to re-iterate some of the things you already know but help build the foundation of who you will truly become.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize women-owned businesses in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Murfreesboro, women.
Take a few minutes to send a text, or make a phone call, It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Cheers to the ladies! This issue is for you!

LOCAL RESIDENTIAL HOME DESIGNER CREATES
CUSTOM DESIGNS AND CATERS TO HER CLIENT’S UNIQUE NEEDS
ARTICLE BY COURTNEY STOCKTON
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGEL PARDUE
Though the home is often considered a woman’s domain, architecture has a long-standing history of being a male-dominated industry. However, with more and more female graduates of architecture programs, the tide may be turning. And Murfreesboro’s Jamie Taylor is at the forefront.
Jamie Taylor heads J. Taylor Designs, a boutique-style design firm that provides customized residential floorplans and designs as unique as each of her clients. Additionally, they work with builders in the market for custom-spec homes. J. Taylor Designs is the bridge between design and build, with the knowledge and expertise to execute excellently.
Taylor’s interest in houses was cultivated when she was a young child growing up in small town Fayetteville, TN. She recounts, “I loved the big old homes downtown off the square. I would

always wonder what the inside looked like and where the rooms were located. So, I would come home and sketch out a design on graph paper of how I thought the inside looked or how I would want the inside layout to flow.”
This passion for homes stayed with her into adulthood, as she would go on to study interior design (with a focus on space planning and construction) at Middle State Tennessee University. After working for a local house plan design firm, she realized that this aspect was more her passion than the decorative side of
interior design. And when she went on to work at Huskey Truss and Building Supply, she gained a deeper understanding of building and construction.
Taylor’s varied educational and professional experience gave Taylor the inspiration and tools she needed to branch out on her own. “I felt there was a gap between the draftsman and architect. A place where homeowners could bring their ideas and concepts and have that custom design experience with a more budget-friendly investment cost.” CONTINUED >

J. Taylor Design fills that gap. And in addition to being an eminently talented and qualified design firm, J. Taylor also brings a certain x-factor (or double x, if you will) – it is an all-female team. When asked if this was by design, Taylor explains, “It was almost an organic process. The team of women I have all contacted me looking to join my business. Now having a strong and talented group of women, I am not sure a male team member would make sense.”
Taylor notes, “I have found in working with a lot of custom homeowners, we discuss the flow and design of the home primarily with the women. They feel heard and seen since we understand the need for a well-designed laundry room or the stages of life with children.” It makes sense then that the field that designs homes begin to reflect the women who, as Mother Theresa famously said, “are at the heart of it.”

Stepping Stones
Lacey Wilkins found her passion for helping women and children experiencing homelessness while working on the homelessness services response team as a maternal-child nurse. In 2016 Lacey began volunteering with Stepping Stones Safe Haven in Murfreesboro, and in 2019 she decided to take on the role of executive director for Stepping Stones.
Lacey serves with the intention of helping women and children experiencing homelessness not only find housing but also help them remain housed. “We’re working to help you be equipped in that journey... we’re staying connected and engaged to help you troubleshoot when things pop up.”
One of the most significant efforts Lacey and her team are earnestly working to implement is helping the community understand how to assist our neighbors and homeless individuals in ways beyond actions like donating clothes to charity. She reminds us that homelessness isn’t limited to addiction or domestic violence. It could be a single mother without a safety net or someone facing a job loss. Lacey understands that real change happens when we work together to achieve a more significant collective impact.
Growing up near the Culinary Institute of America in New York only fueled Danielle’s childhood dreams of becoming a chef. She would eventually graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Baking and Pastry Arts from the school that inspired her as a young girl. And in 2017, Danielle opened Doodles Sweat Treats in New York.
When Danielle and her husband, Charlie, relocated to Murfreesboro, they brought Doodles with them. They opened the doors in 2022 to reestablish what is now Doodle’s Kitchen and Bakery in Murfreesboro. Danielle cherishes each opportunity to bring authentic ItalianNew York cuisine to Murfreesboro and share with a community that has made her and her family feel so welcome in a town so far from home.
You can expect to find everything from freshly made sandwiches for on-the-go to family meals and precooked casseroles ready to be taken home to heat and enjoy! Of course, this pastry chef has your sweet tooth covered with fresh pastries and baked goods prepared daily. Doodles Kitchen and Bakery is undoubtedly leaving its mark and making Murfreesboro a sweet place to be!

Reimagining Healthcare For Women of All Ages
Diana Health has created an innovative and soulful approach to women’s medical needs
ARTICLE BY STACI BISHOP | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY DIANA HEALTH
LOCAL’S CHOICE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 26
It’s no secret the US spends more on healthcare than any other country. The decline in women’s health is also well-documented. The co-founders of Diana Health began to reimagine possibilities that could truly impact the outcomes of their patients. Together they created a model of care that’s getting results and growing in demand. They now have three locations in Middle Tennessee – Smyrna, Springfield, and Cookeville.
There are a few things that make Diana Health unique. They strived to raise the standard and build a warm, genuine experience that addresses an individual’s health. You’ll find both OBs and midwives at their spa-like facility. Diana Health offers a wide range of services, from a patient’s first menstrual cycle through menopause and beyond. It’s a common misconception that midwives only deliver babies. However, the Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) at Diana Health are fully equipped to assist women of all ages with various health needs. In addition, appointments are generous in time so that clients have time to connect, ask questions, and build trust with their medical team. They’ve also added enhanced features such as wellness coaching, mental health services, and education classes. This highly-intelligent, modernized, soulful care is available to anyone, including self-pay, Medicaid, or commercial insurance members.
Diana Health first partnered with Tristar Stonecrest Medical Center in Smyrna. Before opening, they worked on policy development to ensure hospital labor & delivery practices were updated and current as they serve a large population of expectant families. The use of movement in labor, hands-on support, low-intervention induction methods when needed, and shared decision-making with all patients have resulted in more vaginal deliveries. The evidence is clear that this model of care is best for low-risk women. They’ve seen a dramatic decrease in the primary Cesarean rate,
and patient satisfaction surveys are overwhelmingly positive. One patient said, “Not only has this clinic helped me physically recover, they have a therapist in the office to help you navigate any challenges. I finally found a place that I trust completely with my health.”
Having a baby is a transformative and vulnerable time, and Diana Health is proactively helping its clients build a support community. They frequently host local events and online classes focusing specifically on women’s health topics, childbirth, lactation, and group exercise classes. Details and registration links can be found on their website.
VP of Clinical Operations Margaret Buxton believes this care shouldn’t be unique. She has a vision for this simple yet effective wrap-around approach to be available to every woman at all stages of life. Here is a list of services for every age at Diana Health.
RECOMMENDED WOMEN’S HEALTH CHECKLIST*
IN YOUR TEENS: Reach out if you experience problems or concerns.
IN YOUR 20s: Schedule a well-woman exam with lab tests annually. A pap smear is generally taken every three years, with HPV testing every five years.
IN YOUR 30s: Consider pre-conception counseling if you are growing your family. Diabetes testing may start at 35 and be offered every three years.
IN YOUR 40s: Discuss any perimenopause symptoms and a plan for breast cancer checks with your provider. Begin colon cancer screenings at age 45.
IN YOUR 50’s: Mammograms are recommended every 1-2 years. Consider regular bone density scans at this age and discuss lung cancer monitoring.

SATURDAYS AT THE MARKET
The
The Murfreesboro Saturday Market
Between 4:30 and 7:30 every Saturday morning from May 6 to October 28, the area surrounding the historic Rutherford County Courthouse in downtown Murfreesboro is transformed from a parking lot into a bustling farmer’s market. Vendors set up tents and unload fresh produce, bakery goods, local honey, and handcrafted items. When the market opens at 8 am until it closes at Noon, the street is lined with 68 vendors and a steady stream of customers. Maybe it’s the tree-lined walkway around the courthouse or the colorful stalls with flower bouquets, fresh produce, and an assortment of baked goods. Still, a small section of the third fastest-growing city in America slows to a small-town pace at the Saturday Market. Shoppers come early for coffee, fresh bagels, cinnamon rolls, country ham, and biscuits. Families and friends meet to shop, and MTSU students often bring their out-of-town parents. “The Market is a gathering place for our extended community and for showcasing our downtown,” said Sarah Callender, Executive Director for Main Street Murfreesboro.

Murfreesboro Saturday Market features the best of Middle Tennessee farmers, growers, artisans, and craftsmen

The Murfreesboro Saturday Market features the best of Middle Tennessee farmers, growers, artisans, and craftsmen. You can find people sitting on the courthouse steps and benches to eat and listen to music from one of our local musicians. It’s not unusual to see toe tapping or clogging to music from Sophie Buck, our fan-favorite fiddle player. “The market offers shoppers fresh, locally raised products, and they get to know the farmers and vendors they buy from,” said Linda Weeks, Market Manager. “Our vendors take great pride in what they bring to the market.”
The Saturday Market first opened in 2010 as a farmer’s market, but during Covid, it expanded to include local artisans. The outdoor setting was a safe place, providing a vital sales outlet for vendors and a welcome spot for people needing to leave the house. The market has grown from a half-dozen vendors to 50 full-season and 41 part-time vendors for 2023.
On a good day, three to four thousand people visit the market to buy seasonal farm produce, locally raised beef, pork, poultry, baked goods, prepared foods, plants, and cut flowers. Local artisans and crafters sell homemade soaps, fabric crafts, artwork, woodworking, and ceramics. There is even a blacksmith. Twice a month, the Rutherford County Master Gardeners set up to share gardening tips with customers and activities for children. Another community partnership is with The Friends of the Linebaugh Library, which offers a book giveaway for customers twice each season. Visit the Saturday Market this season and bring a friend.

From MTSU alumna to dean
‘I was preparing for this job my whole life and didn’t even know it’
ARTICLE
BY DEANN HAYS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MTSU
INSPIRED BY | EDUCATION

Beverly Keel is no stranger to Middle Tennessee State University. She once walked the halls as a student more than 30 years before she was named dean of the College of Media and Entertainment in early 2020. “It’s the greatest honor that I could ever imagine. It’s a dream come true, and it’s a dream I didn’t even know I had,” said Keel, the first female dean of the college. “It’s a full-circle moment. I was unknowingly building toward this moment. I was preparing for this job my whole life and didn’t even know it.”
MTSU has played a role in Keel’s life since the 1980s. After graduating with her bachelor’s degree in 1988, she returned to the University about two years later as an adjunct professor and began teaching full-time in 1995. “In some ways, it’s the university that I attended, but in so many ways, it’s grown into a whole new major university, and that’s really exciting,” she said.
From the recording industry to audio production, interactive media to journalism, and animation to video and film production, MTSU’s College of Media and Entertainment has programs for it all. “MTSU is such a special place, not only because it’s located right outside of Nashville, but because of the students it serves. I’m biased, and I always joke that we’re the coolest college, but we have the most interesting, creative, and innovative students. Our graduates are creating and producing hits that are worldwide smashes.”
Keel has nothing but pride for the students she encounters daily and often uses her Twitter account to share the success of current students and alums. “It’s a privilege to
know them and see them pursue their dreams. It’s the greatest honor and privilege, and their success brings me more joy than anything I could accomplish. It’s not just me supporting them. They’re a very important part of my life. When my students go on and graduate, get married, and have babies, I want to explode [with pride].”
Keel said she looks forward to seeing how the College of Media and Entertainment continues to grow. “It will remain on the cutting edge of media and entertainment. Things will change, but some things will never change, like the importance of integrity, ethics, and fairness.”
And the legacy that Keel hopes to leave at MTSU is simple. “I want to be known for creating a safe environment where students, faculty, and staff can learn and work together and feel like their voices are heard. I want to be known as a college that promotes the importance of social justice. I want to create an even playing field for my students who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color.”
Keel began teaching at MTSU in 1995 before being named dean in January 2020. She is an award-winning music journalist, with her work appearing in People, Parade, InStyle, Rolling Stone, and The Tennessean. Keel has interviewed two presidents and evangelist Billy Graham and worked with well-known artists such as Scotty McCreery, Alison Krauss, Lionel Richie, and Jamey Johnson. She was included on Forbes’ list of “40 Women to Watch Over 40” and named a national “Change Agent” by Billboard for her work with Nashville Music Equality.
