LIFESTYLE LETTER

“Happiness is the highest form of health.” – Dalai Lama Do you have a happy place? I sure do and as time goes on I have found many other places that make me happy (especially if there is a beach involved) but there is something so healing to me about Lake Tahoe. It is truly my happy place. Growing up just over an hour away from one of the most beautiful places on earth is something I never took for granted. I remember some memorable trips there as a child and every year we make more memories there as a family. There is something about that drive that always feels therapeutic to me. In this issue, you’ll find a closeby retreat here in Tennessee that you may want to consider as you get that “cabin fever” this winter! Rocky Top Retreat can help “change up the scenery,” and serve as a scenic road trip to get you out of those winter blues. Pay extra attention to an incredible nonprofit here in the Boro. Liberty Station is bringing something so special to Murfreesboro that more than serves the community, it’s healing and we were so honored to share their story this month! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of City Lifestyle Murfreesboro from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. We hope this issue inspires you to strive for more balance in 2023! Here’s to you!

LIBERTY’S STATION IS HELPING THOSE WITH EMPLOYMENT OBSTACLES FIND THEIR PURPOSE

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

Imagine eating the best grilled cheese of your life while simultaneously supporting individuals who were previously considered unemployable. Liberty’s Station doesn’t want patrons to feel like they must choose between supporting a good cause or having a great lunch. Here, you can have both! The café recently opened in November 2022 and is already getting rave reviews from its guests. Founder Jody Powers says it all started 8 years ago with Amelia’s Closet, an organization that provides clothing for women re-entering the workforce. They partnered with local organizations for volunteers, including adults with disabilities, to help sort the incoming donations. These volunteers truly enjoyed the opportunity to be productive and do something meaningful. This was when Powers realized she needed to do something more, and God gave her the vision for Liberty’s Station. Those with employment barriers are often never given a chance to start or are quickly let go because they can’t perform the job well. Powers saw the immense amount of

potential and knew that individualized training and experience would set them up for success. Liberty’s Station job program is a progressive workforce pipeline where most of the employees have a physical, intellectual, or developmental disability. The paid internship is designed to prepare them for long-term, gainful employment in the community. Assessments and training are provided by an occupational therapist and are unique to each individual’s abilities. Regular volunteers help the interns shine front and center but fill in gaps and assist where needed. Lunch guests have commented on how touching it is to see the staff so eager to work hard and do a great job. The parents of the interns are extremely grateful. Knowing their children are gaining independence, security, and purpose gives them peace of mind for their future. One of the interns shared in a letter, “My parents have struggled for years trying to get someone to help me. You’re turning me into someone that I’ve always wanted to be. Thank you for recognizing that people with disabilities need help getting a job as well as holding a job. I’ve never loved a job like I love Liberty’s Station.” The development of Liberty’s Station has been a work in progress for over 2 years. During that time, they became a hub for connecting with over 50 partners and organizations. Labor and flooring materials were provided, restaurants gifted equipment, chefs helped create the menu, farmers continually donate ingredients, and a local college fashion department constructed the aprons. With the help of local organizations, the space was designed to be aesthetically pleasing but also fully ADA-compliant in a low-sensory atmosphere. Powers says the response from the community has been amazing! They saw the need, recognized how big of an impact it could make, and it all came together beautifully.

While individual donors currently help support wages for the interns, Powers is already envisioning this to be a self-supported training program that also serves the community at large. For example, the commercial kitchen space is often rented by local food trucks or others needing preparation space. In addition, the building has both an event and office space for rent. Finally, they have a retail shop that carries goods from local artisans and regional craft makers who had employment barriers prior to starting their own companies. Looking ahead, Liberty’s Station is planning to expand to 6 days per week, with breakfast and specialty coffees coming soon. This growth will help them towards their goal of assisting 45 interns annually. You can see the interns or “STARS” in action when you stop in for a bite at 850 NW Broad Street. Inside the café, you’ll also notice the large mosaic flag wall to honor and remember Veterans. To learn more about the “Raise The Flag” campaign or volunteering and sponsorship opportunities, visit libertysstationtn.org.

PLAY ING W ITH COLOR Easy ways to incorporate this years color

Ladies and gentlemen put away the cool tones and let’s all give a WARM welcome to the Sherwin Williams Color of the Year, Redend Point. This mauve meets terra cotta neutral embodies everything the industry is producing; incorporating it into your space will be super simple.

1/

Put your bold foot forward and paint the cabinets, a dresser, a coffee table, a bed, or a statement piece, depending on the room. Just remember, it does lay on the darker side of mid-tones, so make sure you are ready for a pop of semi-dramatic fun that will catch the Jones by surprise.

2/

Wallpaper is all the rage right now. It is a fantastic opportunity to incorporate the Color of the Year and hit two design trends in one application. York Wallcoverings has many options that add distinction and personality and breathe new life into your space.

There is that person out there that goes where others do not dare. The one that goes for it without hesitation or fear. If that is you, paint the room walls. Yes, all of them. If it is not, you could always incorporate art or simple accessories. Layering tones and shades of the same color, monochromatic colors, is essential to keep the room from going flat. TRANSFORMING OLD STORAGE SPACES WITH STYLE

20

GA R AGE T E CH | HOM E SERVI CE S

GARAGE REDESIGN 2023 Home improvement is a never-ending process. New designs, improved materials, repurposed space – all these things and more can add style and value to the family home. Since homebuilding began, there have been several improvement projects which have proven to be particularly popular with homeowners across the country. Closet upgrades, bathroom retrofits and kitchen redesigns top the list, with each improvement known to increase home utility and resale value. However, despite the wide range of remodeling projects, one area of the home seems to have always been overlooked – the garage. Traditionally, most garages have been relegated to just being places to park vehicles and store tools and outdoor equipment. Recently, garages have begun to receive muchneeded attention from remodelers and homeowners. Spawned in part by the “man cave” and “she shed” trends, the humble vehicle storage area has found a new lease in life. Indeed, today’s garages are increasingly being transformed into extended living areas. While storage remains the dominant use for the space, it is now storage with style. “Although the trend is a relatively recent phenomenon for many homeowners, we have actually been doing garage remodeling projects since 2000,” says Sandra Sokol, owner of Closets by Design of Nashville, Middle Tennessee’s leader in optimized storage solutions. After spending years viewing garages through the filter of vehicle and tool storage, many homeowners are unaware of the many different design options available for space transformation. “Most redesign projects begin with the installation of custom cabinets,” says Sandra. “In our factory in Franklin, we manufacture our own

cabinetry, including tall floor units, work benches, upper storage bins and rolling cabinets. By building our own cabinets, we can ensure that they are perfect dimensions for each garage.” One of Closet by Design’s most popular cabinetry lines is their proprietary Silver II collection. “The Silver II cabinets and accessories are crafted in black- and silver-colored materials,” says Sandra. “The modern color scheme coupled with special finishes give the Silver II line a sleek, industrial appearance, which is perfect for many customer garages.” Along with cabinet replacement, Closets by Design also offers other storage upgrades, including their Design Wall coverings, which provide additional hardware and accessories for storing yard, gardening, sport and leisure items. They can also provide custom garage flooring solutions for further enhancing garage appearance and utility. Homeowners seeking to upgrade their garages are often uncertain as to how to begin their projects. Fortunately, Sandra and her team make the process simple and painless. “We begin every project by providing an inhome assessment during which we will discuss customer preferences and options,” says Sandra. “Subsequently, we will measure, design and price the project – all during the same appointment. If the client is ready to move forward, we will complete the contracts and assign an installation date at the same time.” As with all Closets by Design projects, customers are involved from start to finish. “We want our clients to be fully involved in the design and pricing process,” says Sandra. “We encourage them to pick and choose all options, which enables them to establish their own budgets.

All in all, it is a very comfortable and fun process for both our clients and our designers.” To prepare for the project implementation, homeowners will need to temporarily clean out their garages of any boxes, tubs and other items taking up storage space. These items can be returned to the garage as soon as the cabinet and/or flooring installation is complete, which usually takes just one day. Depending upon the size and complexity of the project, most projects can go from approval to completion within just a few weeks. Immediately thereafter, homeowners can begin to enjoy the storage and increased home value arising from their upgraded garage. Emma Nelson, RD, LDN, CPT Explains How Physical Fitness Begins in the Mind

Emma Nelson’s passion for helping others learn to create a healthy, balanced lifestyle has been a life-long journey, and it hasn’t always been an easy one. Growing up as a dancer, Emma became acutely aware of how health and fitness impacted her performance and abilities. Unfortunately, she also discovered that, for dancers, the pressure to “look the part” didn’t exactly foster a healthy relationship with things like fitness, body image, and diet. She would soon take her experiences and use them for good by helping others along in their own fitness journey. Emma knew she wanted to be in the healthcare industry. But it wasn’t until she began her studies at MTSU that she realized she had the experience and the drive to help people learn that enjoying a healthy lifestyle through fitness and diet was not only attainable but it also went hand in hand. After Emma completed the dietetics program at MTSU, she continued her studies at Lipscomb University, where she underwent a dietetics internship and eventually achieved her goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian. Now as a fitness instructor and a registered dietitian, Emma is using her expertise and experience to show her clients that true fitness begins with a healthy mindset.

24

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FI TNE S S

She starts by finding the why or reason a client wants to begin their fitness journey. Many of us have been unfairly conditioned to strive for physical fitness in order to be better accepted or to even accept ourselves. Emma is trying to change that by stressing the importance of focusing on things like energy, mood, and longevity as motivators for fitness. She states, “a lot of people are motivated by body image, and I just really try to teach my clients to find a why or motivator outside of that.” Emma explained that working through her own struggles and misconceptions around diet and how it pertains to fitness has only emboldened her passion for helping others going through similar experiences. “It definitely helps when you’ve been through something yourself... education is one thing, but if you have experienced it yourself, I think that’s really valuable when approaching a situation with a client.” Emma has a deep understanding of what it takes to achieve fitness that is fueled by a diet that not only delivers strength but enjoyment too! She works diligently to teach her clients how to honor their bodies and minds by creating a practical, healthy relationship with food and fitness. She knows that finding that balance will ultimately feed the soul.

1.

1

| Be Aware of Your Motivation.

Is your motivation self-loving or self-loathing? Self-loathing motivation is never sustainable in the long run. Try flipping your perspective to come from a place of love so that you are driven to nourish yourself in a sustainable way.

2.

2

| Create a Good Routine.

Humans naturally gravitate toward routines, healthy or otherwise. Look for ways to establish a routine that is constructive enough to offer the changes you want to see yet gentle enough to stick with it and ultimately thrive!

3

| Schedule Exercise or Movement.

Again, people are routine-oriented. Therefore, scheduling a practical amount of exercise within your day can lead to a well-balanced fitness lifestyle. Remember, exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. Move your body in a way that you know you will enjoy! 3.

4

| Eat Enough Food!

Emma mentions that the danger of not enough food throughout the day is its ability to perpetuate an unhealthy relationship with food and eating in general. Set yourself up for success by eating a good breakfast! Emma also recommends staying well prepared and keeping yummy snacks on hand.

An MTOP employee, Emma serves hundreds of students as a white-water kayak and backpacking guide and teambuilding manager. “One of my favorite things is seeing students come together and solve a problem, complete a task, and celebrate when they’re successful. Not only do I get to help shape future leaders, but I also get the opportunity to show students how fun it can be to get involved with MTOP. With every event, I get to tell students about what we do, what we offer, and encourage them to get into the outdoors,” she said.

Maimoonah works as a Graduate Research Assistant in MTSU’s Department of Health and Human Performance and a Project Assistant for the MTSU Rural Communities Opioid Response Program. RCORP focuses on opioid usage to prevent overdoses. She’s also volunteered to help collect data and assess substance use stigma as part of a grant. Maimoonah and her family moved to the United States in 2010 from Jordan. “I decided to attend MTSU because it is a large campus with a lot of diversity. MTSU offers high-quality programs with many student resources with low tuition costs.”

Sarah works as a trip leader for MTOP and served more than 700 students last year. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to facilitate these experiences and get people outside!” Sarah’s career goal is to become a physical therapist. “I hope to serve people by helping them stay healthy through rehabilitation so they may pursue their life and dreams. I would love to serve the outdoor community and those who require rehabilitation after strenuous outdoor activities and injuries, applying my passion for the outdoors and desire to help others live a healthy, happy life.”

ROCKY TOP RETRE AT A LUXURIOUS WELLNESS GETAWAY

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

The word wellness can mean so many different things to different people. Many think about physical wellness and may visualize hot tea and healthy foods along with fitness and yoga. For some, it simply means a warm bath away from the world’s noise or spending much-needed time with friends. And what if wellness meant a road trip just a few hours away to a cabin retreat amongst some of the most picturesque views of nature in Tennessee? According to takeitpersonelly.com, “one of the best ways to escape the dull routine is to go on a road trip with friends or family. A road trip gives you opportunities to explore new places, meet new people, find new perspectives, rejuvenate your energy, relax and enjoy life. More importantly, a trip helps to heal your mind, body, and soul. Getting out of town, meeting new people and discovering new areas can be a boost to your self-esteem and confidence. Capture those memories with creative photos can also bring a sense of peace once you are back to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops to provide practical footwear.

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!
