But what if, when it comes to style, we simply paid attention to our own growth and our own path. The idea of competing with oneself and to constantly chip away to become, not better than others, but the best version of ourselves, might actually have a long term "ripple effect” for the greater good.

I once heard the quote, “Style is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” I remember vividly as a teenager, feeling the need to constantly re-invent my style. Of course, that was an obvious side effect of the pressure we all faced as adolescents (i.e., the need to ‘fit in.’)

HOW TO | STYLE + BEAUTY Katy Gold, a MTSU alum shares some of her favorite staples and basics to have in your closet all year round. 14
Katy Gold
MTSU alum and manager of Allen shares 5 staple pieces every woman should own Gold is originally from Lewisburg, Tennessee, and graduated from MTSU’s Apparel Design program in 2014. She has worked at e.Allen in Murfreesboro as a stylist and is now the store’s manager.
“A neutral blazer is a good thing to have to layer over pieces that you may be wearing mid to late summer, and they’re going to get you well into fall, especially here where we put the jacket on in the morning, and it’s off by midday because it’s 85 degrees” There’s nothing better than a perfectly fitting dress and a great pair of shoes, especially when you can transition those pieces into fall.
“A good, clean pair of medium to dark wash jeans will allow you to transition from casual to dressy with a nice shoe,” explained Gold. T-shirts and tank tops are great layering pieces as the summer turns into fall. Paired with a cardigan, light sweater, or blazer, they’re the perfect weight as the summer tem peratures linger into fall.

“The education I received at MTSU prepared me for the evolution of my career. A creative eye will get you far. But it was the guidance of my instructors and my dedication to the course work that paid off in ways I continue to see today,” Gold said. “I had the best founda tion as far as family, boy friend (now husband), and friends to help support and establish myself to be able to follow my dreams.”
A good pair of jeans that fit well will never go out of style, and they’re easy to dress up or down, depending on what you pair with your denim.
“A slip dress is one of the easiest pieces to take from daytime to nighttime by pop ping on a blazer and changing up your shoes or accessories. A clean, neutral heel or dressy sandal is perfect to mix and match with many of those staple pieces and are definitely must-haves in my closet,” Gold said.

If it’s high-quality and you’ll keep it forever, it’s worth your money.
“You need quality T-shirts and tanks. I love black and white. If you like gray, pop that in there. A good stripe or boat neck tee is also great to have. These are essential classics you can pop on with a variety of bottoms regardless of your everyday style,” Gold Blazersexplained.nolonger just fit into the business world. On Black Friday in 2014, Austin bought himself a cam era, colored pencils, and a notebook. He proceeded to teach himself how to draw, paint, and sew. Travis' pas sionate, entrepreneurial spirit drove him to research everything needed to succeed in the fashion industry. He started with leather jackets and, in 2015, had sports celebrities in LA wearing his designs. Austin now refers to leather as his "canvas." He established his first clothing company, Layrs, and officially launched his journey into the fashion industry. After several years of hitting walls and learning les sons, Layrs dissolved, and Austin moved to Dallas, Texas. In Dallas, Travis Austin Customs was born along with its first showroom, containing 2,000 of his leather jackets. He started working heavily with the music industry, spe cifically Texas Country artists. Travis desires to mix art with fashion and outlaw couture. The term "outlaw" usually holds a negative connotation; however, it can simply describe the people who stand out in this world and break societal norms. These are the people Travis is trying to attract to his brand. He states his main goal is, "I want to put 1000 dollars on your back." Travis started cultivating essential connections and relationships that he valued immensely as his company grew. He attributes these relationships to the majority of his current success in the fashion industry. In 2019, Travis was on the road for three hundred days out of the year doing pop shows, festivals, and hat tours, working on getting his name known by everyone possible. Borrowing friends' vehicles and renting U-Hauls for events, he started creating custom hats for customers and tak ing orders for leather jackets. In 2020, Travis moved to Nashville, TN, where he designed and opened his flag ship gallery and showroom in the heart of downtown Nashville. The space contains glass enclosures of his fash ion, and the walls display his paintings. The custom hat bar is the most incredible and unique feature of the entire
Growing up in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, Travis Austin was raised in a small town by southern parents. As a young boy, he played baseball and continued to play through college, even competing professionally after graduating. With the desire to try something different and challenging, Austin moved to Los Angles and started modeling for well-known designers. He soon realized he did not want to work for these wealthy and successful designers anymore but instead become one of them.

“I want to put 1000 dollars on your back.” -Travis Austin art gallery-themed showroom. At the hat bar, people can custom create their hats guided by staff members, using everything from paint and ribbon to iconic photos of celebrities. The showroom also contains a fully stocked cocktail bar accessible to all. The theme "Outlaws Never Die" is evident throughout the showroom, from the fash ion to the building's construction. Nashville is primarily known for music, hence the name Music City. However, Travis wants to make fashion just as significant. Being an incredibly confident person himself, Travis found that clothes play an essential role in one's level of self-esteem and confidence. Knowing this, he firmly believes in creating custom pieces for his clients as it brings them a unique sense of beauty and confidence in wearing something specifically made for them and no one else. Even the famous designer Karl Lagerfeld said, "fashion is a language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality." Travis holds vast aspirations for his company and is making extraordinary headway. In 2023, showrooms will open in New York and Paris, with ten additional locations opening across the globe in the next five years. However, in the next six months, Travis Austin Customs will become an official fashion house with women's and men's clothing lines, shoes, and more. Travis is determined to create a space for outlaw fashion in Haute Couture and is succeed ing every day. It is a well-known saying the journey of a thousand miles begins with a sin gle step. Though the quote often borders on cliche, it crystallizes the gen esis story of many successful businesses. One such story comes from Scott Patton and how he realized the dream that became Wellspring Builders.

After a decade spent in construction under the employ three reputable Nashville contractors, Patton and a friend he met immediately after college decided to venture out on their own. With their families’ support and many prayers, they took a leap of faith and started taking on small jobs. It was this little step that propelled their business into prosperity. Patton reflects, “We won a lot of clients by starting with small projects they could not get other contractors to do.” This humble and hardworking approach to building gave them momentum, leading to projects like an 80,000 square foot storage for Iron Mountain Records Management. As Patton recalls, this project, in particular, gave Wellspring “the ability to go to new clients and show them we were capable of more than our company’s age or size might indicate.”

Today, Patton is the sole owner following his busi ness partner’s retirement in 2021. While Wellspring has many projects to be proud of accomplishing over the years, Patton has not just built buildings - he also created a solid corporate culture. In addi tion to always conducting himself respectfully and genuinely, he leads his team with humility. “My ask is always that we keep a ‘win or learn’ mentality.
If we stumble, I only ask that we learn from that experience and use the lesson in future endeavors.”
Patton continues to prioritize his team's success and encourage them in all aspects of their lives, not ing that “if they are winning, I’m likely winning too.”
26
With this attitude, along with the support of his wife Valerie, whom he calls “the best partner I could imagine,” it is no wonder Wellspring has become one of the most successful commercial building companies in Tennessee. Patton and his team have left an indelible mark on our community - it all began with a single step.
Signature BNA Private Airport, have been executed by the incredible team at Wellspring. They can also be credited with rebuilding the Green Hills Mall and improving safety standards in Nordstrom.

As talented as she is, she’s also as down-to-earth and humble as you would expect from a Nashvillian.
When asked how she views art, she notes that “there’s an artist inside every human being because God cre ates us, and He is the ultimate artist. We are made in His image, and therefore we are all creatives in some way; we just have to explore a little to tap into it.” Mena works through her website and Instagram @artbymichaelanmena to provide custom pieces throughout the Nashville area.
When you think of Nashville, a few things likely come to mind – live music, iconic buildings, maybe even hot chicken. But as more and more people have been flocking to music city, Nashville has begun to undergo a cultural renaissance.
29| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MURFREESBOROSEPTEMBER 2022
One of the results of this resurgence is a burgeon ing new art scene. We sat down with Michaelan Mena, one of the up-and-coming artists breathing new life into Nashville’s art scene. Mena has always been an artist with a background in different forms of creativity. Her journey into painting began almost out of necessity, as she was struggling to find pieces in stores or online that aligned with her aesthetic vision. “I wanted large, textured pieces that felt peaceful, unique, and orig inal, and I simply couldn’t find what I was envision ing,” so Mena did what most artists and innovators would do – she rolled up her sleeves and decided to experiment. This was the beginning of her painting career; as Mena put it, “the process of ‘playing’ lit a spark that turned into a flame.”
And that flame is readily apparent in Mena’s work as it is imbued with passion and conviction. The hall marks of her work are texture, using materials like sheetrock, acrylic paint, tissue paper, and scale; her canvases are typically no smaller than 30x30. The visual impact of these features is quite dramatic and multi-faceted, which is surprising given she draws her inspiration from architecture and nature. “I love the texture and form of building materials used in architecture and the seamless lines, blending of col ors and emotion of nature.”
