Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals it’s beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers.

There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone.

Historic Locations

Around Murfreesboro

These sites are must - visits for both newcomers and longtime locals

The City of Murfreesboro’s history dates to the 1800s. It’s the birthplace of first lady Sarah Childress Polk and was home to one of country music’s earliest stars, Uncle Dave Macon. It was also the capital of Tennessee from 1818 to 1826. Now, as one of the fastest-growing cities in Middle Tennessee, it’s easy to see why so many people want to call Murfreesboro home. Whether you’re a long-time local or a newcomer, here are four places you should add to your places to visit this summer.

Geographic Center of Tennessee Did you know the geographic center of Tennessee is right here in Murfreesboro? Located at 307 Old Lascassas Road, the spot is located just a half-mile away from Middle Tennessee State University and was marked with an obelisk in the 1970s by the Rutherford County Historical Society.

Kirksey Old Main

Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center

Oaklands Mansion

Kirksey Old Main is one of the original buildings on MTSU’s campus and opened in 1911. Located at 1301 East Main Street, it’s still used for classes today. In its more than 100-year history, the building has housed classrooms, the library, administrative offices, a bookstore, auditorium, post office, and a gymnasium. A longtime legend surrounding the KOM suggests that if you kiss someone on the steps of the historic building, they will become your one true love. In fact, according to MTSU’s Albert Gore Research Center, several couples met at the KOM and later got married.

Located at 415 South Academy Street, the Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center includes an original classroom, space for programs and theatrical productions, exhibits about Rutherford County’s founding, our African-American community, and the Civil War. When the school first opened in the early 1800s, attendance was only open to white males. One of the earliest students was President James K. Polk.

In 1884, the school became a co-educational institution for African-American students. The current structure was built in 1917, and served the community until Murfreesboro City Schools were integrated in the 1960s. Tours are available Tuesday through Friday.

Oaklands Mansion, located at 901 North Maney Avenue, is the only historic house museum in Murfreesboro.

The plantation was built as a home for the Maney family, and some of their personal belongings still remain on display today. Oaklands tells the stories of the Maney family as well as the African Americans who were enslaved there. Self-guided tours are available and can be booked online. The site also includes a native tree arboretum, the natural wetlands at Maney Spring, and a reception hall for special events and exhibits.

CREATING A LEGACY FOR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY

Billy Graham once said, “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money…but rather a legacy of character and faith.”

Family and faith are the two most important things to Rhonda and Kim, two local siblings, who operate the store, Veda’s Flowers and Gifts. After years of service to the Rutherford County School System, it was time for a change. These lovely sisters had the brilliant idea to create a business that their children could one day inherit and run themselves. They wanted to leave something more tangible behind for the benefit of their children and grandchildren. Rhonda and Kim bought a building downtown and decided to name their company after their grandmother, who had been such an inspiration and an important part of their family. In June of 2017, Veda’s Flowers and Gifts was born. While it was a challenge in the beginning to start something brand new, it soon became an incredibly significant part of Rhonda and Kim’s lives and hearts. With the knowledge and experience of 20 years, Veda’s offers flower arrangements for any type of occasion, along with faith-based gifts and home decor. They outsource their flowers, only purchasing the highest quality for their clients.

More recently, they have added deliveries to their list of services. Rhonda and Kim take extreme pride in the quality of work they do, guaranteeing only the best. Faith and spirituality play a major role in everything these lovely ladies do. Rhonda and Kim pray they are used as a light to everyone that walks through the doors of their shop. In fact, there is even a prayer wall inside the flower shop where customers can add their own personal prayers. The sisters pray over these requests and support their customers in any way they possibly can. They use flowers and gifts as an avenue to show the love of the Father and encourage others.

Rhonda says their motto for life and business is, “Be a good person, kind, loving, and thoughtful of others.”

2008– the housing bubble popped, leaving many Americans in default of loans and in threat of foreclosure. It was a tough time for the real estate industry, homeowners, and banks, and yet, John Jones launched John Jones Real Estate, LLC in the midst of the mess.

John’s plans for his company centered around autonomy and opportunity– to create growth through technology and marketing and further develop the team concept he had begun to implement at his former company.

His vision did not include opening a company in one of the biggest financial debacles in American history, but there he found himself.

He realized he was left with the choice of

caving to fear or getting up and going to work, committing to learn a new way of doing business.

He made the choice. Forced into creativity, Jones surrounded himself with people he trusted and got busy reading, learning, and listening to others he respected. This growth mindset changed everything for John, and a whole lot for the real estate community in Rutherford County.

Even today, his business theory centers on the same ideas that it did then– of continuing to keep his foot on the gas and search for new ways to execute deals. He is passionate about books and staying connected to those who are a few steps ahead of him, firmly believing that he is the average of the five people he is around most.

Many of the real estate greats in Rutherford County give John credit for being their greatest teacher. When asked about this, John admitted that years ago, when he would train an agent and they would strike out to implement their own autonomy and opportunity, he was hurt by it; but with maturity has come to see it as a great compliment. He learned long ago that sitting in victimhood does not move one forward, and that “growing people up is the way it is supposed to go.”

Jones begins every morning with three things: a time of thankfulness, affirmation, and writing notes to those whom he appreciates– practices that set him up for how he ultimately wants to live. When asked if he would like to be remembered as founder and president of JJRE, visionary, friend, teacher, leader, learner, or follower, he settled back and smiled, thoughtfully considering each title. After a minute, John leaned back in, armed with his characteristic intensity and enthusiasm, and proclaimed, “A giver– that’s how I want to be known.”

“Ride a bike, it could change your life,” says local Cycle Bar owner, Bryna Podwoiski. Back in Michigan, years ago, she fell in love with cycling and grew extremely passionate about it. She would regularly attend classes at the Cycle Bar and soon it became an important part of her weekly routine.

However, in 2018, Bryna, her husband, Troy, and their two young children embarked on a new adventure to Tennessee after accepting a huge opportunity. In Murfreesboro, a franchise for the Cycle Bar became open for purchasing and the Podwoiskis’ took it. While a huge change from Michigan, Tennessee has been a welcome breath of fresh air for the entire Podwoiski family. Bryna describes it as, “The most wonderful and stressful experience, but all worthwhile since I was following my passion.” In late 2019, Cycle Bar opened officially with all the excitement and jitters. Unfortunately, a few short months later, the gym had to be closed down due to Covid 19. After reopening, a new air purification system was installed that recirculates the air every ten minutes in prevention of bacterial and viral growth. There is often a misconception that cycling is strictly a waist and below exercise. This is completely false actually. Cycling is a full body workout and unlike other

exercises, is a low-impact cardio workout. Like anything else, cycling is not for everyone, which is why the Cycle Bar offers a free first ride to everyone. At the Cycle Bar, each class has its own unique ever-changing playlist, so cyclers get to experience a range of artists and genres. There is as well, a cycling class for every level of skill and energy.

There is a total of eight cycle instructors, which have been trained through a corporate process and mastered the skills of coaching and connecting with people. There is a well-balanced amount of personalities and energy levels among the instructors to lead a class for anyone! One thing, that Bryna really enjoys about Cycle Bar, besides the exercise-- is the community it builds. Customers will even plan outings and gatherings outside of Cycle Bar, building strong connections. Bryna knows of multiple women who have become best friends after simply cycling together.

Spring is here once again! After being cooped up all winter long now is the perfect time to go explore the parks and trails around you! Murfreesboro specifically has options for everyone, from a family outing to the expert hiker, we’ve got you. Let's dive in to explore just a few of the options available.

BARFIELD CRESCENT PARK Barfield Crescent Park is located in the southern area of Murfreesboro. This specific park has many amenities. One thing to take note of is the 7+ mile trail, both paved and unpaved for biking, hiking, and walking. This location also includes two different playgrounds! You could definitely have an epic day here!

WALTER HILL TRAILHEAD The Walter Hill Trailhead is just the beginning of Murfreesboro's Walter Hill Recreation Area. Be sure to walk the shaded 1.3-mile Murfreesboro Greenway that follows the river. Take in all of the beautiful views of the East Fork Stones River from the bluffs along the way. Looking for a day out on the water? There is a ramp for launching small boats at the far end of the Recreation Area.

Stones River National Battlefield is in honor of the Battle of Stones River, one of the largest and most important battles of the American Civil War. The versatility of this park is one for the books. There are Trails within the park that allow visitors to get closer to nature, while the Murfreesboro Greenway system connects visitors to portions of the battlefield by foot or bike! Be Sure to map out enough time (about 2 hours) to do the self-guided tour of the museum.

SPORTSCOM We must keep in mind that springtime typically calls for rain. Have no fear, there is an indoor option full of amazing things to do– Sports*Com. From their 6 court Gymnasium, the indoor pool, to the rock wall, surely there is something you can do! Not only do they have indoor options but they have an outdoor swimming area called the “Boro Beach”, along with outdoor volleyball courts!

INGREDIENTS • 5 lbs of Red Potatoes- diced & boiled until tender • 1 cup of diced Yellow Onion • 1 cup of diced Red Bell Pepper • 1 cup of diced Orange Bell Pepper • 1 cup of diced Celery • 2 Hard Boiled Eggs, diced • 1/2 cup Yellow Mustard • 1 cup of Dukes Mayo • 1 cup of Wood Fire White Sauce (any white sauce will work) • 1 Tbsp Salt • 1 Tbsp Pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Once Potatoes are tender, drain well.

2. Mix all ingredients well, while potatoes are hot.
