March 2022 PUBLISHER

Holly Dershem Brown holly.dershembrown@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it every day. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace, and happiness.

HOW TO REFRESH YOUR HOME THIS SPRING ON A BUDGET MTSU professor gives tips on sprucing up home without breaking bank

ARTICLE BY DEANN HAYS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAKEISHA BENNET & FRANCESCA TOSOLINI

Spring is in the air and it’s the time inspiration strikes to take home improvement projects to the next level – from hanging flower pots on the porch to new coats of paint; it all has to be done! But when the spring inspiration bug bites, it’s sting often means money, money, money.

UPDATE YOUR ARTWORK A non-permanent way to freshen up your home is changing out your artwork. “You could have a family portrait or something up that’s really important at the holidays, but if you can change it out during the springtime and make it something like a garden scene or something in nature, you really change the character of that space for the season,” explained Middle Tennessee State University associate professor of interior design Dr. Janis Brickey.

WINDOW TREATMENTS New curtains, blinds or window treatments can also easily transform a space. “One of the things you can cheaply add is using a tension rod or casements to a window that allow light to filter. The addition of casements, which you can get for starting around $10, is a very inexpensive way you can modulate light and it brightens up a space, or adds light reflectance to darker colors,” said Brickey.

PLANTS Plants. They may seem like a small thing, but they can make a huge difference in your home. They are an easy way to spruce up your space using a biophilic design. “Having plants helps bring some of the elements of the outside in and adds greenery. I think that makes it more of a continuous relationship between the interior and the exterior.”

16

H OW TO | HOM E + D ESIGN

THROW PILLOWS Throw pillows are a fun, inexpensive accessory to brighten up a living space, bedroom, family room or playroom. “If you can switch out the slipcovers from your pillows, you know really adding that punch of color or a pattern, it can really brighten the space up,” Brickey said.

SET CLEANING SCHEDULE Having a set cleaning schedule in place can make all the difference, especially when you just want to be outside enjoying the sunshine. “One of the things that can reduce your stress is having a normal cleaning schedule like from the standpoint of it’s something you just do. I think it’s a way you can enjoy your environment more because there’s nothing worse than being stuck inside when everyone else is outside,” Brickey suggested.

Daniel Levitin, a famous author, musician, and cognitive psychologist said, “The power of art is that it can connect us to one another, and to larger truths about what it means to be alive and what it means to be human.” For thousands of years, art has influenced culture, the projection of eras, and one’s personal worldview. Today, in the 21st century, we don’t have to visit an art museum to witness it. Art can be manifested into countless creations, one, in particular, being murals. Murals are the most creative and beautiful piece of street art, adding character and uniqueness to any city. Murals build a sense of community, welcoming tourists and residents alike. With a splash of color and a stamp of individuality, murals can be found all around the vastly growing city of Murfreesboro. The Tennessee Tristar Rainbow is a beautiful example of a community supporting mural and can be found downtown on Walnut Street. More recently, in 2020, it was painted by the Iron Brush Mural Company. The Iron Brush Mural Company is devoted to creating

20

I NSP IR E D BY | EN TERTA I NME NT

a more colorful and creative Middle Tennessee through painting indoor and outdoor murals for both homes and commercial businesses. It is run by two lovely moms who are passionate about art. More of their work can be found around town in several locations like Brass Horn Coffee, Donut Country, and even the Avenue. Another mural in Murfreesboro is Vine Street Market, which can be found downtown on Vine Street. Local resident and artist, Norris Hall designed the mural and along with several other individuals painted this magnificent mural in 2018. Vine Street Market received lots of attention back in 2019 by VIP Murfreesboro and was created into t-shirts that can be found inside the store, Vine Street Market. Art holds the power to bring unity and division amongst humanity. As well, a sense of unity is built when massive amounts of people take pictures with local murals, while alsosupporting the city. Visiting the murals around Murfreesboro is a definite add to the 2022 bucket list!

OU T W I T H T H E N E W, IN WITH THE OLD ARTICLE BY KATI CROSSLIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUSSELL JOHNSTON

You Can’t Build Charm - But Jamie Taylor Can

If you’re a local or you’ve stuck around Middle TN in the last few years, you’ve seen thousands of newly constructed homes go up in your area. Neighborhoods continue expanding. An older home is knocked down just to be replaced with two tall and skinny homes with modern appeal. Some Tennesseans don’t mind the change, but some miss the charm that the older homes brought to their once-small town. You can’t build charm; Charm appreciates over time, right? Not if you have Jamie Taylor in your corner. Residential designer, Jamie Taylor, is the solution to restoring the charm that our endearing cities once had. Initially when we hear ‘design’ during the home building process, we think interior design. But the magic that Jamie creates is actually a cohesive collaboration with the builder, architects, interior designers, and owners of a custom home. Jamie’s career started working in a design firm in 2002, but when the recession hit in 2008, she took a job working at a local lumber company. That’s where she began learning the less glamorous side of the building process; quickly picking up on the structural needs of a home and the supplies needed to make it all happen - a trait that has set her apart from other residential designers.

24

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

We like to think of Jamie as a residential therapist, because she sorts out every aspect of the home design and building process. She meets with each client to guide them through finding their design style as well as determine how to carefully craft the floor plan to suit her client’s needs. She consults with all potential clients to gain an understanding of what their #homegoals are, reviews budgets, and can even pair you with the builder who is best suited for your project. Jamie’s specialty? Making brand new homes look historical. Her craft of staying true to the architecture of the era in which the new home is based on is unmatched. “I pride myself in being true to the architectural style. If we’re going to build a farmhouse, I’m going to keep it true to the style. It’s going to look like it was built 100 years ago.” Jamie has designed many stand-out homes throughout our community as well as created viral home plan The Ross Residence, with one of our current favorites being the Heffington home, pictured here. Jamie collaborated closely with the builder and homeowner to create an old-world feel, with split levels to maintain the integrity of the land the home was built on. If you’re wanting to build a custom home, connecting with J Taylor Designs should be your first step in the process.

LEA ANNE BEDSOLE EMBRACES ALL OF WHAT MURFREESBORO IS AND WAS Lea Anne Bedsole

30

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

A PRODUCT OF HER RAISIN’ A great Southern euphemism reminds us that we are all a “product of our raisin’,” and nothing could be closer to the truth for Lea Anne Bedsole. Her family moved to Murfreesboro when she was 11 months old; her father ran restaurants and later, her mother worked as an interior designer. It makes sense that when her name is mentioned, one’s mind immediately goes to homes and hospitality. She is equal parts business and fun, quick-witted in both striking real estate deals and humor. 13 years ago, John Jones gave LeaAnne her start in the industry; she was proud to be the first female agent he ever hired and his mentorship shaped her career. It was 2008 and the market was hard– her office was next to Joe Hafner, and as a managing broker, Joe would listen to her phone calls, correcting and guiding her daily. It was then that she found the importance of learning daily, and by integrating her work ethic and commitment to education with natural traits of integrity, joy, and good relationships with clients and other agents, she found her professional niche.

For most people who are at the top of their craft, there is a deep why behind their success, and for Lea Anne, it is her family– not only her husband and children but also her parents, who she says she owes a lot for the years of stress she put them through. She loves Murfreesboro as only a native daughter can, and seems to be known, or at least known by, almost everyone in Rutherford County. Watching the city grow has been a joy for Lea Anne. New people, businesses, and schools have brought an excitement to the area, and yet the familiar–from the Square to solid values– has maintained an environment of kindness and compassion. From her early corporate years at Microsoft to years at home with babies, and now as an agent who is not only respected but wellloved, LeaAnne has woven the beautiful and unfinished tapestry of a life well-lived; but she does say that if she weren’t selling homes, she would be a detective or philanthropist… using her time to make a difference– pretty much what she does

BRIE STUFFED WITH CRANBERRY PRESERVES AND BACON, WRAPPED IN A PUFF PASTRY

CRANBERRY BACON BAKED BRIE ingredients: • • • • •

1 Wheel of brie cheese 1 Sheet of puff pastry (½ package) 1 Jar of cranberry preserves 1 Cup of bacon 1 Egg

makes: Servings: 12

total time: 40 minutes

directions: 1. Place the brie in the freezer while you take out the puff pastry to thaw. About 30 minutes 2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Roll the puff pastry out using a rolling pin 4. Slice the frozen brie in half. Place one half on the center of the puff pastry. Spread the cranberry preserves on top. 5. Top with bacon then place the other half of brie on top. Fold the pastry around to completely cover the cheese. Brush the fold with egg wash. The egg wash is to keep the brie from leaking. Remember egg acts as glue for pastry dough. 6. Place the brie on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the center of the oven. 7. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. 8. Let it cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.

H OST IN G T IP S | L IFE + CULTURE

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in

New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach

is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.

If you’re looking for a yummy signature cocktail, I’ve fallen in love with the Plume & Petal range of mid-proof premium infused vodkas. Each of their lemon, peach and cucumber flavors is naturally infused and layered with essences like white tea and elderflower and just a hint of honey for sweetness, so the taste is sophisticated and bespoke.

CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEWEST COOKBOOK AND WHAT CAN WE GET EXCITED ABOUT? DO: In “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss

Food To Celebrate Eating Clean” I share the techniques I’ve used to get my mind, energy and body back on track after each pregnancy or anytime I’ve needed to reboot good habits—without ever losing the joy of cooking, the fun of mealtime and the stress-free pleasure of doing it intuitively. “Eat Your Heart Out” is a collection of 150 recipes free from gluten and refined sugar that have consistently helped me lose weight without ever disappointing my demanding tastebuds—or making healthy eating feel like a job I don’t need or want.

CL: IN ADDITION TO YOUR COOKBOOK, WHAT ARE SOME HOUSE-WARMING OR DINNER HOST GIFT SUGGESTIONS? DO: I find a little gift basket of some of my favor-

ite seasoning essentials goes a long way and feels personal and unique. I’ll add things like a favorite herbal tea like the Plain- Rooibos Passionfruit, some delicious Kosterina or Fancy Peasant olive oil, Westbourne Togarashi Crunch (such as an incredible saltycrispy pairing with buttery togarashi spiced chex cereal, toasty nuts, and a little bit of sweet to balance the spice! It’s the perfect bar snack FYI), Daphnis & Chloe herbs and spices (love their quality and pretty glass jars!), Gjelina Honey Trio, Maldon Flaky Smoked Sea Salt, Primo Botanica Tree Hugger Chaga Chocolate, Olive & Linen Turkish Hand Towels…the list goes on and on! Our skincare specialist are experienced at performing the treatment you want to have based upon our extensive training and understanding of skin structure and function. While other practitioners often apply to treat the symptoms and not the cause of skin conditions; we opt for utilizing the concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine in determining the root cause of your issues. Therefore, delivering an in-house protocol that yields real results! By determining the cause of the condition and what subsystems of the skin have been affected, more appropriate and effective action plans can be formulated, helping you build an effective skin health program.
