Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers, and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules, we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. C enter St a ge Country Singer/Songwriter Drew Green Recalls His Journey to the Spotlight

A casual 350 years ago (give or take a decade or two) French writer and fabulist Jean de la Fontaine famously penned the line: “A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.” Such a poetic statement can be applied with flawless precision to the life and career of country singer/songwriter Drew Green. “When it comes to doing music, I had always been told ‘Man, that’s not attainable.’ And it’s almost not. You talk about being broke, dude. You can Google me right now and it says I have a net worth of 5 million dollars. I have 5 dollars, maybe,” the 33-year-old McMinnville native tells me jokingly. “That’s why they call it ‘The Dream.’”

Now managed by Grammy award-winning songwriter Brett James and signed to Justin Timberlake’s Villa 40, Green’s path to the record deal of a lifetime wasn’t always obvious. Despite falling in love with music as a child [on his family’s tree farm in Warren County], Drew spent much of his life walking away from that passion — while Fate made a point to tap him on the shoulder at every turn. “I was in a garage band in high school,” Green shrugs. “We were pretty good; we played Tennessee Battle of the Bands with Taylor Swift when I was 14 or something. But then we broke up, and I didn’t play for a couple of years. I was doing college stuff.” It was at age 20 (with no small thanks to his fake ID) that Green was randomly discovered by honkytonk royalty at a local bar in Cookeville. “This guy came in and wanted to hear live music. Somebody there knew I liked to sing and my guitar just happened to be in my truck, so I got up and played like 4 songs.” Turns out the patron wanting to hear live music was none other than the owner of legendary Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge in Nashville. “He said, ‘Do you wanna sing at my honky-tonk on Broadway? I thought he was drunk, I thought he was kidding, I didn’t think nothing about it — but somehow I got a call the next morning asking if I wanted to come in that day.”

Fast forward six months later and Drew decided to put down his guitar yet again, discouraged by the long hours, minimal pay and 4 hour daily commute. “I went and finished school, got a job at a bank, met my wife and moved to Lebanon,” he recalls. “I worked at that bank for like a year, had just got promoted, was gonna have my own office, a bump in salary, everything looked great — and I quit the next day,” he says with a smile. “I was like ‘I’m gonna regret this forever if I don’t go back and do some music stuff.’ So I started writing songs again, every day. I was obsessed. I still am.” Since that time, Green estimates he’s written at least 1,500 songs — some of which have been cut by country stars like HARDY & Florida Georgia Line. He’s also just finished his first tour with Mitchell Tenpenny — a jaunt that spanned 30 stages and 15 states. His plans for 2022? Releasing new music and most importantly, cultivating his relationship with his fans. “Most people sign a record deal with like 300,000 people following them. I signed with a thousand friends on Facebook,” Drew says with a self-deprecating laugh. “Then COVID hit a month later! Everything that could be the worst situation for a guy, I feel like I’m in that boat. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

4 WAYS TO STAY MENTALLY HEALTHY IN 2022 MTSU OFFERS COUNSELING SERVICES TO ITS STUDENTS FREE OF CHARGE. APPOINTMENTS AND SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC, TOO. ARTICLE BY DEANN HAYS Let’s be honest. The last couple of years have been hard, and at times, a little strange. We’ve rung in the new year, survived the holiday rush, and made plans for 2022. But, is maintaining your mental health included in your plans?

GIVE YOURSELF GRACE It’s ok not to be ok. Life happens. Things happen out of your control. No one expects you to be strong all the time, so why pressure yourself to live up to that unobtainable standard? “Recognize that if you’re not ok, then you’re not ok. Be kind to yourself and give yourself the opportunity to feel the distress, but not stay with the distress,” explained Dr. Robin Lee, professor, and director of Middle Tennessee State University’s Center for Counseling and Psychological Services.

COPING STRATEGIES Whether it’s breathing, meditating, taking a bath, writing – whatever – it’s important to know what healthy coping strategies work for you and how to execute those strategies. “Being sad about things is ok, but establishing some coping strategies, and recognizing what those are, and putting that plan in place ahead of time is important. Knowing strategies like breathing techniques and grounding techniques for when distress is exacerbated, you know how to use those tools,” Lee said. “Just find a starting point; there is no right starting point,” MTSU Assistant Psychology professor Dr. James Loveless said, adding, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Just one bite leads to the next, which leads to the next. It doesn’t matter where you begin so as long as you find a starting point.”

GET PLENT Y OF SLEEP We all need it, but sometimes it’s hard to catch eight hours of Zzzz’s every night, but getting a full night’s sleep – seven to nine hours a night – plays an important role in maintaining mental health. “It’s always a good recommendation that before bed people go through some sort of soothing routine – like getting in your pajamas and brushing your teeth. It can also include things like relaxation training skills, like diaphragmatic breathing or some type of meditative exercise just to slow your mind as your body prepares to rest,” said Loveless. Lee added, “When a person is sleep-deprived, then any symptoms of anxiety or depression are exacerbated and to the point where we’ve seen situations where folks have almost become unstable – not because of any distress – but because of lack of sleep and because they simply were not getting what they needed.”`

GOOD DIET AND EXERCISE While a good diet and regular exercise can help boost your physical health, it can help maintain and improve your mental health, too.“It’s important to make sure people are doing activities they find meaningful or important and pleasurable, or ideally, both. They can be big things or little things, but making them a regular part of someone’s routine is important,” Loveless explained. “Eating right and exercising is a coping mechanism. It can be a strategy for helping deal with stress,” Lee added. It’s important to take care of all aspects of your life – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Gourmet Marshmallows THE PERFECT VALENTINES DAY TREAT!

R E C I P E P R O V I D E D B Y: T H O M S C O T T

Yields: 60 marshmallows Time: 30 minutes to prepare. 4-6 hours of cooling time beginner ITEMS YOU WILL NEED • Large heavy bottom saucepan (at least 4 qt.) • Heavy duty stand mixer (at least 5 qt) • Candy Thermometer • 9x13 cake pan • Brown Kraft paper / tape

INGREDIENTS • 2 pounds sugar (about 4 cups) • 1 1/2 cups corn syrup • 1/4 tsp salt • 1 cup water • 4 packets of unflavored gelatin, dissolved in one cup of COLD water • 2 tsp vanilla extract • Powdered sugar for dusting ( it will take quite a bit so have plenty on hand)

DIRECTIONS 1. In the saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, salt. 2. In the bowl of the stand mixer, dissolve 4 packets of unflavored gelatin in one cup of cold water. Mix and let stand. 3. Line a 9 x 13 metal cake pan with brown kraft paper (turn the pan upside down, shape the paper to the pan, and tape the corners. Flip it over and the paper liner fits the inside of the pan!) 4. Bring the contents of the saucepan to boil and insert the thermometer. Stirring occasionally, cook to 242 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature has been met, immediately pour into the mixing bowl over the gelatin mixture. Using the whisk attachment, mix well. Start with medium speed so that hot syrup doesn’t splash out. As the mixture begins to whiten, gradually increase speed to the highest setting. Add 2 tsp vanilla extract and continue beating until mixture is white and fluffy. (in my 5 1/2 qt mixer the marshmallow will come to about 1/2 inch from the top of the bowl). 5. Remove from the bowl from the mixer and pour into the paper-lined pan. Bump it a couple of times to level the mixture to release any air bubbles. Set aside to cool thoroughly - about 4 - 6 hours. 6. Dust the top with powdered sugar and heavily dust a 13 x 18 sheet pan with powdered sugar.

7. Once cooled, carefully turn the pan of marshmallow out onto the sheet pan, with the paper on top. Remove the tape from the corners. Using a wet paper towel, moisten the paper and begin to peel it off of the marshmallow. Try not to use too much water or let the water pool around the edge of the paper. Gently rub the paper with the wet paper towel to release it from the marshmallow as you peel it back. Once the paper has been removed, dust the marshmallow with powdered sugar and you are ready to cut it. 8. Using the largest kitchen knife you have, cut the marshmallow in half. Don’t try to draw the knife through the marshmallow. Push straight down on the blade and then pull the pieces apart. Scrape any residue off the knife and dust the knife blade and the newly cut edges of the marshmallow with powdered sugar. Cut each half into two equal pieces. I usually cut each quarter into 15 approximately equal pieces. If dipping in chocolate I cut each marshmallow in half.

SUGGESTED VARIATIONS 1. Substitute maraschino cherry juice for the cooking water to make cherry marshmallows. 2. For lemon or orange marshmallows, add the finely grated zest of a lemon or an orange to the cooking syrup. Add a little lemon or orange extract instead of vanilla. Add a drop of food coloring if you like! 3. For coffee marshmallows (great in hot mocha!) use brewed coffee for the cooking liquid.
