It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be.

Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them.

Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness, and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind, and spirit is the focus of this issue.

Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health, and love.

PR EP: 30 M I N COOK T I M E: 30 M I N Y I ELDS: 8-10 PEOPLE INGREDIENTS • 3 medium sweet potatoes chopped • 1 medium onion chopped • 1/2 bundle of fresh cilantro (rough chopped) • 28 oz of rotel • 16 oz of red enchilada sauce • 2 teaspoons of chili powder • 2 teaspoon of cumin • 3 teaspoons of pure maple syrup • 2 quarts of vegetable broth • 3 cans of black beans rinsed and drained • 16 oz of frozen corn • Sliced avocado and tortilla strips to garnish (optional).

DIRECTIONS Mix all ingredients in a large stockpot and cook on medium heat for 30 minutes (low boil) stirring occasionally. Once cooled top with gluten-free tortilla strips, fresh avocado, cilantro and enjoy!

It’s one of the fastest-growing careers in healthcare with no signs of slowing down. Physician assistants were ranked as the No. 1 profession by U.S. News and World Report in 2021, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the field will grow 31% from 2020 to 2030.

Physician assistants earn a master’s degree and are licensed to diagnose and treat illnesses and diseases, prescribe medicine and perform medical procedures. They are trained as generalists so they don’t have to specialize in one certain area of medicine and work in collaboration with doctors in places like hospitals, operating rooms, medical clinics, and outpatient settings.

In May, the inaugural Physician Assistant Studies class will begin at Middle Tennessee State University.

“Our program, what’s being built here, is going to be special. I think the small class size makes it more of a family-oriented environment, which is conducive to learning because of the amount of personalized instruction,” Director of Didactic Education Dr. Jason Huddleston said.

With total program tuition and fees estimated at $65,722 for in-state residents, MTSU’s PA program will be the least expensive in Tennessee.

Students in the 27-month-long program will complete 108 credit hours with an emphasis on primary care medicine and clinical methods.

Twelve months of supervised clinical practice experiences are built into the curriculum, and consist of clinical rotations in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, surgery, behavioral health and emergency medicine.

“One of the things that sets the MTSU PA Studies program apart is our focus on the provision of healthcare in rural areas and underserved communities. We’re working on clinical rotations that will afford our students the opportunities to go, learn and participate in the care of rural and underserved areas, hopefully attracting them to careers there after graduation,” Huddleston said.

Sohil Patel, the first student accepted into MTSU’s PA program grew up in what he describes as a “highly underserved rural town.” He’s now looking forward to giving back to communities that need it most.

“The availability and access to primary medical care are critical in living a long and healthy lifestyle.

However, people living in rural or underserved communities often suffer from multiple barriers in achieving this basic care… I, myself, have experienced some of these barriers while growing up in a rural town in southeast Georgia. As a PA, it is only fitting, and my duty, to give back to these communities by serving as a primary care provider and health educator to alleviate some of the obstacles,” Patel said.

Physician Assistant programs are accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA). The ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the Middle Tennessee State University Physician Assistant Program sponsored by Middle Tennessee State University.

Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation-Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.

Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class.

Breaking Chains CHANGING THE FUTURE OF HOMELESS CHILDREN ARTICLE BY GRACE LIBMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGEL PARDUE

For over a decade, Joel Bigelow worked at Steel Technologies and would pass by the run down motel across the street, pondering the quality of life of the children he saw playing outside the building. This exact motel is notorious for housing low income families.

After the Great Recession of 2009, Joel found himself yearning for more meaning in his life and to make an impact on others. The Lord placed a calling on his heart and a life changing idea was born. In 2015, Joel quit his long term job at Steel Technologies and with his wife, Jeannie, created a nonprofit organization called Endure Athletics.

While it was originally named for the physical endurance needed in sports, the meaning has since then changed to ref lect upon the courage and strength needed to undergo the challenges of life. Their mission statement is to enrich the lives of homeless children in Rutherford County and instruct them on how to break generational cycles of poverty. Bringing this vision to reality was no simple and easy task. The whole Bigelow family was taken out of their comfort zone physically, emotionally, and financially. In fact, they sold their home in order to live off the equity.

They were forced to put all their trust and faith into the hands of the Lord.

“We rely on God completely. I always tell people He takes me right to the cliff and I just look up ready for whatever is next. We have never gone without. We always have what we need.” Over the years, Joel developed a summer camp, after-school programs, and enrichment activities like Christian mentorship and sports games. Lighthouse Baptist Church and Steel Technologies generously contribute space to Endure Athletic’s activities. Since it was established in 2015, Joel has worked with over 100 homeless children, 65 of which are still currently in his care. One of the first students to ever be a part of Endure Athletics is now a hardworking junior at MTSU. With his three 12-passenger vans, Joel picks up the children and takes them to church, youth events, and activities within his own organization.

He also has had the honor of baptizing five of the children, whose pictures hang in his office. The vision for Endure Athletics is for their own facility and to serve more homeless children in surrounding cities. Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation.

Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion.

Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price.

“Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say.

In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery.

“It’s an interesting moment in time. There’s this heightened sense of, ‘how do I become more resilient, how do I boost my immune system?’ Health and wellness is way more in the spotlight, and the trend of more people being at home has launched a new consumer process,” they say.

It doesn’t hurt that they are designed with your home in mind. The elegant and unique physique makes it an easy decision for everyone to appreciate.

“What’s also exciting about this is that we have partnered with American Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, who has a very specific protocol: Get in for sixty seconds, get out for sixty, do three to five rotations and get to the point of a shiver.”

Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind.

Ryan also compares it to working out, citing weightlifting as an example. “The whole thing is tearing your muscles down so they become stronger. You are going through an intentional stressor. You will get a relaxed response after, but you are intentionally putting yourself into a fight or flight state.

The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.”

Ryan has his own process—getting in, breathing four seconds in and four seconds out, transitioning his hands in and out of the water because their different nerve endings create a different blood flow and kick off the fight or flight mechanism.

His nervous system then calms down and his mind sets into calmness roughly two and a half minutes in. After a three minute plunge, he comes out super energized with mental clarity.

“It feels like a back door to meditation for people who don’t meditate, i.e. two to three

minutes vs twenty,” he says. “It’s a totally different process, but you push out the mental chatter and you become more present.”

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them.

They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep.

“A lot of people who come for our product just want to do hard things, uncomfortable things. They say, if it’s good for me AND it’s difficult, then they are completely motivated by that.”

The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments.

There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth.

“One of the things that has been rad that we did not anticipate is parents doing it with their children,” he says. “It’s become this ritual where they do it together, a family plunge.” CrossFit frontman Rich Froning told the team that the coolest thing about having The Plunge is doing the plunge together every night with his daughter. It’s another layered benefit for their clients to know, one of creating special time around doing something uncomfortable and getting healthier, together.
