Explore More: Summer Adventures on the Water and Beyond
July practically demands that we get outside and explore, whether that means hopping on the boat, splashing around at the beach, or finally getting to that new restaurant you've heard all about. Summer has a way of reminding us just how lucky we are to call this place home.
One of the things I love most about Mount Pleasant is that you don’t have to go far to discover something new. Whether it’s a tucked-away restau rant, a quiet park, a local gallery, this town always has a way of surprising you—even after years of living here. And woven throughout it all is a deep sense of history, from waterfront landmarks and historic streets to Fourth of July fireworks over the harbor, reminding us that this is a place where the past isn’t just preserved—it’s celebrated year-round.
For my family, summer usually means spending as much time on or in the water as possible. My twins and I especially love shark tooth hunting at the beach — which mostly turns into me convincing myself every black shell fragment is a prehistoric treasure while they somehow find the real ones immediately. It’s become one of our favorite summer traditions and a reminder that exploration doesn’t have to be extravagant to be memorable.
That same spirit of adventure carries throughout this issue. We’ve mapped some of the best restaurants you can get to by boat — because somehow dinner just tastes better when you arrive by water. And for an even bigger escape, we’ll take you to Greece with a feature on chartering a sailboat through crystal-blue waters and seaside villages that feel straight out of a movie.
Now, while a trip to Greece may not be in the cards this July, an unforgettable meal at The Crossing absolutely should be. Located inside The Cooper, downtown’s newest waterfront resort, this stunning restaurant serves Mediterraneaninspired cuisine that perfectly captures the relaxed coastal lifestyle we all love this time of year.
Wherever this summer takes you — across the ocean or just down the harbor — I hope this issue inspires you to get out there and explore.

DOCK. Dine. EXPLORE.
Your guide to Charleston’s best boat-friendly waterfront restaurants
For this month’s “Explore” issue, we created a Dock & Dine map featuring some of our favorite local waterfront destinations that are easy to access by boat. Whether you’re heading out for a casual afternoon cruise or planning a full day on the water, these spots make it easy to pull up, tie off, and enjoy everything Charleston’s dockside dining scene has to offer.
Shem Creek
We’re starting with the obvious, because honestly, it’s hard to beat Shem Creek. Pulling up here gives you access to some of Mount Pleasant's most iconic waterfront bars and restaurants, all within walking distance of the docks.
Island Cabana Bar
Just a short cruise across the harbor is a hidden tropical escape tucked inside Seabreeze Marina. Keep an eye out for the green “open” dock signs, which indicate complimentary first-come, first-served slips available for patrons. It’s the perfect stop for frozen drinks, live music, and laid-back harbor vibes.
California Dreaming
Docking is first come, first served, and while there’s no docking assistance, the easy access and waterfront views make it well worth the stop.
Islander 71
This may be our personal favorite — for a lot of reasons. Easy docking, friendly staff, plenty of outdoor seating, and a fun,
energetic atmosphere make it feel like the perfect spot for a salty sailor to grab a cold drink and a great meal after a day on the water.
Charleston Harbor Marina
Dockage here does require a fee, but the access to surrounding restaurants and bars makes it worth it. Grab casual bites and drinks at Reel Bar, enjoy rooftop cocktails at Bridge Bar or head to Fish House for a dinner overlooking Patriots Point.
Wando River Marina
Tie up here and you’ll find yourself at one of North Mount Pleasant’s local staples. Arrive at the right time and you can enjoy live music while taking in peaceful views of the Wando River — a perfect way to wind down after a day on the boat.
Daniel Island Marina
Daniel Island Marina also charges a small hourly dockage fee, but the staff is incredibly helpful and the location gives you easy access to some fantastic Daniel Island restaurants.
Charleston’s waterways are part of what makes this city so special. And even if you don’t own a boat, you can still experience all of these waterfront spots with ease. Boat rentals around Charleston make it simple to get out on the water for the day. Prefer to stay on land? Every destination on this map is also accessible by car, so you can still enjoy the dockside dining, waterfront views, and laid-back coastal atmosphere that make these restaurants local favorites. So grab the map, gather your crew, and go explore Charleston — by water or by land.
“Cruise the Lowcountry, dock for dinner, stay for the sunset.”

EXPLORE Regenerative Therapies: A NEW Frontier
A2M, PRP, and Stem Cell Therapy Explained
If you’re dealing with joint pain, injuries, or chronic discomfort, you’re not alone—and surgery isn’t your only option. Today, advanced regenerative treatments such as Platelet-Rich Plasma, Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, and mesenchymal stem cell therapy are helping people feel better, move better, and get back to doing what they love—naturally.
These treatments work with your body, not against it. Instead of masking pain with medication or relying on invasive procedures, they use your body’s own healing abilities to repair damaged tissue and reduce inflammation.
PRP: JUMP-STARTING YOUR BODY’S HEALING PROCESS
Your blood contains platelets, which are packed with natural growth factors. These growth factors are like “healing messengers” that tell your body to repair injured tissue.
With PRP, we take a small amount of your blood, concentrate those platelets, and inject them into the injured area. This boosts your body’s natural healing response exactly where you need it. PRP is commonly used for joint pain, tendon and ligament injuries, and muscle strains.
Because it comes from your own body, PRP is a safe, natural option with little downtime.
A2M: PROTECTING YOUR JOINTS FROM FURTHER DAMAGE
A2M (Alpha-2-Macroglobulin) is a powerful protein already found in your blood. Its job? To block harmful enzymes that break down cartilage in your joints.
Think of A2M as a “shield” for your joints. When cartilage starts to wear down—like in arthritis—these damaging enzymes speed
up the process. A2M helps stop that damage in its tracks.
The treatment is simple and minimally invasive. A small sample of your blood is taken, processed to concentrate the A2M, and then injected directly into the painful area.
Many patients choose A2M because it targets the root cause of joint pain, not just the symptoms. It’s especially helpful for people in the earlier stages of joint wear and tear who want to slow things down and stay active longer.
Janet, our tennis superstar, is back on the court competing against players of all ages after her A2M procedure, and she wishes she
would have started her regenerative journey with us earlier. She tried treatment somewhere else first, but after just one month with us, she’s already noticed a bigger impact on her knee health.
MESENCHYMAL STEM CELL THERAPY: REGENERATING AND REBUILDING
Stem cell therapy is one of the most advanced options in regenerative medicine. Stem cells are special because they can develop into different types of cells—like cartilage, muscle, or bone.
Once there, they go to work by supporting tissue repair, reducing inflammation, and helping rebuild damaged structures.
You can think of stem cells as your body’s “repair crew.” They not only help fix damage but also create an environment where healing can continue over time.
Stem cell therapy is often a great option for people with more advanced conditions or those who haven’t found relief with other treatments.
Captain John had a hip replacement on one side but opted for stem cell treatment on the opposite side. He says he wishes he would have done stem cell therapy on both hips. The fish don’t, though—he’s out on the water every chance he gets now that his hip isn’t keeping him at home.
WHY CHOOSE REGENERATIVE THERAPY?
Patients are turning to these treatments because they offer:
• A natural, drug-free approach
• Minimally invasive procedures
• Little to no downtime
• The potential to avoid surgery
TAKE THE NEXT STEP
You don’t have to live with pain or give up the activities you love. The longer you wait, the more joint damage and inflammation can progress—making recovery more difficult over time.

Why Dr. Todd J. Brown Chooses Regenerative Therapy Over Traditional Medicine
Use your body, don’t abuse it
Pharmaceuticals can help, but the side effects often aren’t worth it. Regenerative therapy supports the natural healing processes already occurring within your body.
Procedures that take minutes, not hours
Our procedures average about 45 minutes, so you don’t have to block off your entire day to get the healing you need.
Back in action faster
Our therapies can sometimes help you get back to doing what you love more quickly than surgery recovery — often with even better results. But don’t just take our word for it; hear what our patients have to say!
CHARTERING THROUGH THE GREEK ISLANDS DELIVERED PRIVACY, AUTHENTICITY, AND UNFORGETTABLE LUXURY BEYOND THE USUAL HOTSPOTS.
SAILING BEYOND THE CROWDS
There’s a particular kind of luxury that can’t be bought with velvet ropes or five-star lobbies. It’s the luxury of access. Of privacy. Of waking up somewhere the crowds haven’t discovered yet. And nowhere embodied that feeling more perfectly than a sailboat charter through the Greek islands.
When most people picture Greece, they imagine the familiar postcard scenes — the blue domes of Santorini, the beach clubs of Mykonos, rows of tourists spilling through narrow cobblestone streets.
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY NELSON
And while those places are undeniably beautiful, our experience revealed a completely different side of Greece. One that felt untouched, authentic, wildly beautiful, and surprisingly attainable.
This wasn’t a billionaire’s yacht fantasy. In fact, that may have been the most shocking part of the experience. Chartering a sailboat through Greece turned out to be far more affordable than we imagined — especially when compared to luxury hotels, constant ferries, dining out for every meal, and the endless logistics of island hopping the traditional way. Instead of unpacking and repacking every two days, our boutique floating hotel traveled with us. Every morning brought a new harbor, a hidden beach, or a sleepy fishing village waiting just beyond the bow.
And the true magic? We experienced Greece the way locals do — by sea.
The Greek islands were made to be explored by boat. Tiny coves inaccessible by car. Beaches with water so impossibly turquoise it looked digitally enhanced. Remote tavernas with only a handful
of tables perched beside fishing docks. Entire stretches of coastline where the only sound was the wind pushing through the sails and the gentle rhythm of the Aegean beneath us.
By midday, we would anchor in secluded bays that tour boats simply couldn’t reach. No beach clubs. No lines. No souvenir stands. Just crystalline water, dramatic cliffs, and the kind of silence that immediately slows your heartbeat. We swam straight off the back of the boat, floated beneath the Mediterranean sun, and felt entirely disconnected from the noise of everyday life.
But what elevated the experience from simply “beautiful” to unforgettable was our captain.
Every great journey has a storyteller, and ours came in the form of a sun-weathered Greek sailor who knew every hidden harbor, every family-owned taverna, every secret swimming cove in the islands. He wasn’t following a generic itinerary pulled from a brochure. He listened carefully to what we wanted — quiet beaches, authentic villages, incredible food, fewer crowds — and curated each day specifically around us.
Some mornings he would change course entirely because the wind was perfect for a different island. Other afternoons he would steer toward a tiny fishing village simply because “the octopus is freshest there.” And somehow, every recommendation felt like discovering a secret Greece the guidebooks missed.
There’s something incredibly luxurious about having an experience crafted for you in real time. No rushing. No rigid schedules. No fighting crowds for reservations. Just the freedom to explore at the rhythm of the sea.
And then there was the food.
To say our onboard hostess could cook would be an injustice. Every breakfast and lunch felt like a private culinary experience
prepared by someone who genuinely loved feeding people. Fresh Greek yogurt layered with local honey and fruit in the mornings. Warm pastries. Eggs with herbs and feta. Bright salads bursting with tomatoes that somehow tasted sweeter than any tomato back home. Grilled seafood. Homemade tzatziki. Olive oil so fresh you could taste the sun in it.
Each meal somehow outdid the last.
Lunches stretched lazily across the deck beneath the shade of the sails while the boat gently rocked in crystal-clear water. It felt intimate and impossibly serene — the kind of experience luxury resorts attempt to replicate but rarely achieve authentically.
And at night, the entire mood shifted.
As the sun lowered into soft pink skies, we would dock in tiny harbor towns where fishermen still mended their nets beside the
water and locals gathered in the town square well after dark. We’d wander narrow alleyways lined with whitewashed homes overflowing with bougainvillea, stopping for wine beside the sea or discovering tiny tavernas with no website, no influencer crowd, and some of the best meals we’ve ever had.
That may have been the most surprising part of the entire trip: how deeply local it felt.
Despite traveling through one of the world’s most iconic destinations, we rarely felt like tourists. We felt immersed. Welcomed. Part of the rhythm of island life, even if only temporarily. Greece has a way of slowing you down — encouraging long dinners, afternoon swims, lingering conversations, and a rediscovery of simple pleasures.
And perhaps that is the true definition of luxury today.
“ONE THAT FELT UNTOUCHED, AUTHENTIC, WILDLY BEAUTIFUL, AND SURPRISINGLY ATTAINABLE.”
Not excess. Not over-scheduled itineraries or crowded hotspots designed for social media. But meaningful experiences. Privacy. Authenticity. Space to breathe. The ability to discover places most people never see.
Exploring the Greek islands by sailboat offered all of that and more.
It was elegant without being pretentious. Adventurous without sacrificing comfort. Wildly beautiful yet deeply grounding. One moment we were diving into hidden turquoise coves beneath towering cliffs, and the next we were sipping wine in a tiny harbor town as church bells echoed through the evening air.
For a June issue centered around Explore, it’s hard to imagine a more fitting reminder that the best destinations are often experienced differently than expected.
Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t arriving somewhere everyone else already knows.
It’s sailing quietly past it toward something even better.
Boutique
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOWCOUNTRY LAUNCH
At Advanced Dentistry, Dr. Candice Vinson has built more than a practice — she’s created a sanctuary where exceptional care meets boutique refinement.
Cosmetic Dentistry
There is a particular kind of confidence that comes from a smile you’re proud of. Dr. Candice Vinson has understood this her entire life. Growing up in Valdosta, she watched both of her parents undergo full-mouth rehabilitation, and when that happened, for the first time, she witnessed her father smile with true confidence. That was a moment she’d always remember.
“I had never seen my dad smile so confidently before,” she recalls. “Seeing what dentistry could do — not just physically, but emotionally — that’s what drew me to this field.”
Dr. Vinson went on to study at College of Charleston, where she fell in love with the city and planted roots that would define her career. She pursued her graduate studies at Medical University of South Carolina, where the discipline of prosthodontics — the specialty dedicated to the restoration and replacement of teeth to improve oral function and aesthetics — distinguished itself as the ideal intersection of artistry and medicine.
For Dr. Vinson, it was a natural fit: a field that demanded precision and creativity in equal measure, while offering the rare opportunity to transform not just a patient’s appearance, but their sense of self.
In 2018, she opened Advanced Dentistry with a clear vision. The office would feel nothing like a traditional dental practice. No cold, clinical interiors. No rushed appointments. No revolving door of unfamiliar faces. Instead, Dr. Vinson envisioned an intimate, boutique environment — one where patients felt genuinely seen and unhurried.
“We help patients overcome dental anxiety by slowing down,” she explains. “Whether someone comes in for a routine cleaning or a fullmouth restoration, we take the time to truly listen.”
That philosophy extends to how she built her team. From the beginning, Dr. Vinson surrounded herself with people who share her commitment to excellence and her belief that a supportive workplace translates directly into exceptional patient care. The result is a staff that functions less like colleagues and more like a close-knit community — one whose warmth is immediately felt the moment a patient walks through the door.
As the practice has grown, Dr. Vinson has been deliberate about expanding her team in ways that preserve that culture. Recent additions — including a new associate dentist, a dental hygienist, a treatment coordinator, and a dental assistant — allow her to dedicate more time and focus to complex cosmetic and prosthetic cases.
Dr. Candice Vinson
Dr. Emily Coughlin
Dr. Vinson’s work requires the advanced training of a prosthodontist, though many patients receive treatment without fully realizing the level of specialized expertise behind their care.
“Most patients aren’t aware that they’re being treated by a specialist,” Dr. Vinson notes. “But that expertise is exactly what allows us to take on the cases other offices can’t — and deliver beautiful outcomes.”
The newest member of Advanced Dentistry’s clinical team, Dr. Emily Coughlin, brings her own quiet dedication to the practice. A native of the Charlotte area, Dr. Coughlin completed her undergraduate studies at Appalachian State University before earning her dental degree at MUSC — the same institution where Dr. Vinson trained.
For nearly seven years, she built her clinical experience at a practice in Charleston, developing a particular affinity for crown and bridge work while maintaining a broad scope of general dentistry.
Dr. Coughlin’s decision to join Advanced Dentistry was, in many ways, an easy one. Mount Pleasant is home — she and her family live nearby in Carolina Park, and the city’s pace and character suit her well. When the opportunity to work closer to home presented itself, and Dr. Coughlin learned about the practice’s dedication to patient-focused care and clinical excellence, the alignment felt natural.
“The atmosphere Dr. Vinson has created is something special,” Dr. Coughlin says. “It’s calm, warm, and family-oriented — and that energy carries over to the patients. They’re appreciative. They’re happy to be here. That matters.”
At its core, Advanced Dentistry is the embodiment of a simple but powerful belief: that exceptional care and genuine human connection are not mutually exclusive — they are inseparable.
Dr. Candice Vinson set out to build something different, and by every measure, she has. For the patients who walk through her doors — whether seeking a routine visit or a complete transformation — what they find is a team that treats every smile as a work of art, and every person behind it as worthy of their very best.
Advanced Dentistry is located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in The Market at Oakland.

A Mediterranean Escape on the Harbor
ARTICLE BY SARAH ROSE
Michelin-nominated Chef Nick Dugan brings Mediterranean-inspired cuisine to Charleston’s harborfront dining scene.
At The Cooper’s signature waterfront restaurant, The Crossing, Eastern Mediterranean cuisine meets fresh Lowcountry ingredients, creating a fusion of flavors from the menu curated by Chef Nick Dugan, whose work at Sorelle has earned a Michelin nomination.
Starters, including mezze selections such as hummus, muhammara and baba ganoush served with house-made wood-fired sourdough pita, alongside salads with freekeh, squash blossom, pomegranate molasses and fresh herbs, are meant to be shared communal family-style.
Main course options range from a blend of land and sea, such as dry-aged beef tenderloin with Aleppo butter to Colorado lamb chops with chermoula and seafood options such as whole-fish prepared over an open flame or broiled in grape leaves, a rotating crudo selection and an extensive shellfish program. Throughout the dining room, servers present the variety of fish tableside, describing its origin and preparation before guests make their selection. Once cooked, the fish returns to the table whole and is filleted and plated in front of guests, creating an unforgettable dining ritual.
The Crossing is also open for breakfast and lunch. Start the day off right with offerings such as shakshouka, a Mediterraneanstyle Benedict, house-baked pastries, cured and smoked fish and a house-made bagel program. For lunch, options include abundant salads, shareable mezzes and handhelds such as a lamb burger and turmeric chicken gyro.
As Chef Dugan explained, “Our cuisine is inspired by Mediterranean culinary traditions: simple and honest cooking that respects ingredients, seasonality and technique.” He added, “There is nothing more inspiring than having a front row seat to the waters you source from.”
“Our cuisine is inspired by Mediterranean culinary traditions: simple and honest. cooking that respects ingredients, seasonality and technique.”
With a focus on Mediterranean producers and seafood-driven pairings. beverage director Cameron Nadler, formerly of the Polo Bar in New York City, brings a world-class wine list to The Crossing. Additionally, the cocktails are blended with citrus, herbs and coastal botanicals, designed to feel bright yet complex. Signature drinks include the Battery Rose Margarita, made with reposado, hibiscus, rose and citrus. The King George III Old Fashioned is concocted with earl grey-infused bourbon and aromatic bitters, while the Aegean Spritz is handcrafted with cappelletti, Italicus bergamot, club soda and prosecco.
Off the menu, the interiors, designed by Meyer Davis, further enhance the experience. Set against sweeping views of Charleston Harbor, the concept for the dining space centers on a maritime aesthetic with teak wood floors, polished nickel accents and lacquered blue ceilings that reflect the city’s seafaring heritage and the views of the water. The Captain’s Lounge
overlooks the harbor, while the Chef’s Table sits directly before the open kitchen where the glow of the wood fire becomes part of the experience. Two outdoor terraces extend the dining room for open-air seating.
To view the menu and make a reservation, visit www.thecooper.com/dining three -to-four weeks in advance and follow @thecrossingchs on Instagram.
For a less formal, more playful vibe in an equally fabulous establishment that doesn’t require booking, visit the bar and lounge adjacent to The Crossing. With several of the same fantastic cocktails and martini-forward bar menu, the lounge offers fare such as chicken nuggets with caviar, Turkish flatbread, oven-baked clams and a Loukaniko ‘hot dog’ with Greek relish, whipped feta and toasted splittop. According to Chef Dugan, the space is a hidden gem for those in the know.

The 10% Target Mindset
Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT
Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.
He calls days later.
That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.
The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.
The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.
“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”
FEATURING JEN COHEN

1 2
MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS
The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.
STACK THE DECK
Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.
3
DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE
No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.
4
SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP
Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.
5
NEVER MISS A MONDAY
The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
