LIFESTYLE LETTER

Pets & Kids

This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they are the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, their curiosity, and their potential shape the world in ways we can’t fully measure.

As parents and caregivers, we put so much effort into nurturing their growth, teaching them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget that children also shape us—they bring joy, laughter, and meaning to our everyday lives.

We also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.

At the core of both children and pets is a simple truth—they need us. Our care and attention shape who they become, and in turn, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our homes with joy and love.

I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love.

Here’s to our future, our little ones, and the pets who make everything better. Cheers!

LUNCHBOX FATIGUE IS REAL

- and School Hasn’t Even Started Yet

I used to be the lunchbox queen—cutting starshaped cucumbers, arranging tiny fruit kabobs, even matching themes to the day of the week. But then the internet went full bento-box bonkers; it wasn’t enough to send a decent lunch—you

practically had to curate a Disney-themed mini art exhibit just to keep up. And suddenly, my lovingly packed lunches felt… inadequate.

Somewhere between the Pinterest pressure and real life, my spark fizzled.

Now, with only one kid left in elementary school, when my first grader came home and asked me to make her “cheese hearts like Maya” my own heart kinda soared…THIS I can do, sister. So I’m crawling back into the lunch game with low expectations and a little perspective. The goal? Ditch the daily sandwich rut and just keep it simple, fun, and most importantly, edible.

HERE ARE FIVE EASY SWAPS:

1. Apple Sandwiches… round slices of apples with a smear of peanut butter and a sprinkling of granola… and if your little one is ok, a touch of lemon keeps them bright and crisp.

2. Tortilla Roll-Ups… I love filling these with anything from pimento cheese to egg salad to lunch

meat… you can even do peanut butter and banana with a light drizzle of Nutella.

3. Mini Bagels… up the ante of a bagel sandwich by giving it British tea sammies vibes… with cream cheese + thin sliced cucumbers with a sprinkling of salt or bagel seasoning.

4. Sandwich Kebabs… a deconstructed sandwich with all the goodies stacked on a toothpick, caprese-style. Layer bread, meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, repeat (or skip the veggies for pickier eaters).

5. Breakfast (for lunch): hard-boiled eggs, mini pancakes, berries. For added protein throw some nut butter in-between those mini pancakes.  It doesn’t need to be Instagram-worthy, just eaten (and maybe not returned half mushed in the backpack). And speaking of returned, here

are a couple mom hacks to save your sanity (and wallet):

1. Don’t let them toss the evidence. I once found out that one of mine had been chucking full organic yogurt drinks in the trash every day for weeks. I thought they were a hit. Now I tell them: bring it all back. I want to see what’s working (and what’s not).

2. Make it fun, not fussy. A few cute, reusable toothpicks and mini cookie cutters can go a long way—especially with picky eaters. A starshaped melon chunk or a sandwich on a stick suddenly makes lunch way more exciting.

3. Invest in a real-deal lunchbox. A good bento box that keeps wet stuff from leaking into dry stuff? Game changer. We don’t need to do it all. Just do what works—and pack it with love.

HONORING Every Heartbeat

THE MISSION OF WORLD OF BROKEN HEARTS

ARTICLE BY KOURTNEY MCCOMB | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUHA DABIT
Local, Piper Richie

When Suha Dabit first heard the words “Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome” during a routine ultrasound, her world stopped. Her unborn daughter, Nadia, was missing half of her heart—a diagnosis that carried a lifetime of uncertainty, countless surgeries, and fragile hope. In that moment, Suha didn’t yet know how deeply her family’s journey would reshape not only their lives but also the lives of countless others across the world.

The early months of Nadia’s life were spent in and out of the hospital. At just five days old, she had her first openheart surgery. Two more followed before her third birthday. Though Nadia was declared a surgical success, her tiny heart couldn’t keep up. Six weeks after her third procedure, her parents were told she needed a heart transplant. With unimaginable strength, they agreed to a complex and rare intervention: implanting a Berlin Heart—a pediatric ventricular assist device that would keep Nadia alive until a donor heart became available.

Hooked up to machines for nearly six months in intensive care, Nadia refused to let her circumstances dim her light. She played games with nurses, handed out stickers, sang songs down the hallway, and brought joy to everyone who crossed her path. Her spirit was magnetic, unbreakable, and unforgettable. Finally, a donor heart arrived—offering a second chance, a new rhythm, and a new chapter. But for Suha, Nadia’s healing wasn’t the end of the story—it was the beginning of a mission.

During those long hospital days, Suha saw parents grappling with heartbreak and hope, often without the time or means to capture precious moments with their children. She watched families whisper goodbye with only a few blurry phone photos to hold onto. That loss— the absence of tangible memories— stuck with her. She knew there had to be

a way to honor these stories with beauty, dignity, and permanence.

That desire became World of Broken Hearts, a nonprofit born from a mother’s pain and transformed into a platform of healing and connection. Suha picked up a camera—an entry-level Canon Rebel— and taught herself photography. What started as a few portraits gifted to families at the same hospital where Nadia was treated, grew into something much bigger. In 2015, she launched World of Broken Hearts officially, and by 2018, it became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Through the organization, Suha offers free professional portrait sessions for families of children with congenital heart defects. Whether in the NICU, at home, or following surgery, each photograph captures more than a moment—it preserves courage, love, and legacy. Some children survive and thrive. Others don’t. But every family is left with images they’ll treasure for a lifetime.

Through every scar and story, Suha’s lens reminds families their love, strength, and broken hearts are beautiful—and never forgotten.

quiet prayers. Her camera is more than a tool—it’s a way to say: “I see you. You are not alone.” World of Broken Hearts has grown into a movement of awareness and advocacy. The organization works alongside other nonprofits to shine a spotlight on congenital heart disease and promote the life-saving power of organ donation. Suha’s work has been featured in People, Good Morning America , and beyond— but her focus has never been on the headlines. It’s on the faces, the families, the warriors behind every scar.

Looking ahead, Suha dreams of expanding the reach of her work— partnering with more hospitals, training photographers, and ensuring no CHD family ever has to go without these priceless memories. For those just beginning their journey with a diagnosis, she offers compassion and understanding. For those who want to help, she encourages simple but powerful steps: say yes to organ donation, support CHD research, and share these stories.

The portraits are stunning—full of light, resilience, and raw emotion. But the heart of this work lies in Suha’s ability to connect with families in their most vulnerable seasons. She understands the unspoken fears, the long nights, the

What started in a hospital room with a tiny baby girl and a half-working heart has become a lifeline of love for families across the country. Through grief, grace, and the lens of a mother’s camera, Suha Dabit has created something extraordinary: a world where broken hearts are not hidden in silence, but seen, honored, and held forever in the light.

Moments THAT MATTER

Lindsey Conder Turns Real Life Into Picture - Perfect Memories

If you’ve ever tried to wrangle your wiggly toddler, coax your partner into coordinating outfits, or keep your dog from chasing squirrels—all while smiling for the camera—you know that family photos can feel more like a circus than a celebration. But for professional photographer Lindsey Conder, capturing those unscripted, joy-filled moments is exactly what makes her heart sing. “I love the emotions that photos can bring out,” Lindsey shares. “I love making people smile just by

seeing their children laughing in photos and being close to each other.”

Based in Tennessee, Lindsey Conder Photography has become a favorite for families seeking more than just posed portraits. Her sessions are playful, relaxed, and filled with real connection. Whether it’s a toddler’s giggle, a dad's bear hug, or a shy smile between siblings, Lindsey captures the kinds of images that tell a family’s true story.

Forget stiff poses, Lindsey encourages clients to ditch perfection and lean into the fun. “The photos actually look way better if you interact with your family instead of looking at the camera,” she says. “Have fun, let loose, and pretend I’m not there!” That approach is exactly what makes her work stand out. “These sessions can be super fun,” she adds. “I direct each one to capture authentic smiles and reactions. But if one person isn’t participating or looks miserable, it absolutely shows in the photos. That’s why attitude and energy matter so much.”

Of course, a great session starts with good preparation. Lindsey helps families choose outfits that not only coordinate but photograph beautifully. “Letting your photographer style you makes a big difference,” she says. Her eye for

color and composition helps bring everything together naturally, making the photos look cohesive and timeless. Lindsey often encourages neutral tones, layered textures, and simple accessories to let the family’s personality shine through.

And when it comes to the kids, Lindsey has it covered. “I always introduce myself, play a game to break the ice, and I have a reward for them afterward,” she says. Her playful approach puts little ones at ease quickly, helping families relax and enjoy the moment. She knows that when kids are genuinely having fun, the laughter and connection captured are far more meaningful than any perfectly posed photo.

Lindsey’s love for families extends to their furry members too. “Yes, I absolutely encourage bringing pets to your family session!” she says. “Just let me know during booking,

“When you find a photographer you love, the sessions will feel like an adventure.”

and I’ll choose a pet-friendly location for you.” From tail wags to sweet cuddles, she knows how to include pets seamlessly in the experience. Dogs lounging at their owner's feet or nuzzling into their child’s side—these are the moments that matter most to many families, and Lindsey is intentional about honoring every member.

One thing clients quickly realize is that Lindsey’s sessions aren’t just about taking pictures, they’re about creating experiences. Many families leave their session saying it felt more like an afternoon at the park than a formal photo shoot. Lindsey brings a calming, joyful energy that allows families to be fully present with each other, and that’s what translates so beautifully in every final image.

It’s clear Lindsey sees photography as more than a job, it’s a calling. “When you find a photographer you love, the sessions will feel like an adventure,” she says. She’s grateful for the connections she’s built in her community and for the trust her clients place in her to preserve the meaningful, everyday moments that define their lives.

For families looking to document their story with warmth, authenticity, and a little bit of magic, Lindsey Conder Photography is ready to turn your everyday moments into cherished keepsakes; beautiful reminders of the love, laughter, and connection that make your family uniquely yours.
