Health & Wellness A new year brings with it a sense of renewal, a fresh start, or another chance to reach a goal. Celebrating a new beginning can feel exciting but at the same time, it can feel daunting. We are all very familiar with the “new year, new me” crowd; the ones who seem to be able to pull a goal out of their hat and stick to it. Whether you thrive in the wake of a New Year’s resolution or flunk it, it’s important to remember that at its core, a resolution is really just a search for balance. In our Health & Wellness Issue, we highlight different layers of health. Being “well” is multifaceted and interlaced to include the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. And if we are to be resolute in the areas of our lives that pertain to health, then we must be patient with ourselves and give ourselves the grace of knowing that achieving a healthy balance takes time and is ongoing. A resolution to better health and wellness begins with hope and is fueled by fortitude and perseverance. Recent years have taught me that when it comes to searching for a healthy balance, there is no quick fix. And progress isn’t always linear. If you decide to make a resolution towards better health and wellness, lean into the process. Make practical changes that you can stick with, accept the downfalls, and know that the first step is the most important. Welcome to the new year! We’re rooting for you!

Hidden in the hills just outside of Knoxville, TN is my home away from home. The place where historic heirloom seeds have been grown, harvested, and preserved through generations and served with love in a world-class restaurant. Blackberry Farm was built by Florida and David Lasier in 1940 and opened in May 1941. In 1952, the Lasiers sold the property to the Jarvis family who subsequently sold it to Ruby Tuesday restaurant founder Sandy Beall and his wife Kreis. I was given the absolute gift of a lifetime when I was invited by the Lamar Alexander family to come Kristy Osmunson of country duo, American Young, Photo credit: Dove Shore for a stay at the family's estate that neighbors the farm and write songs for Curb Records. My band, American Young, wrote our song “Point of View" sitting at the peaceful creek that separates the two properties. Our producer and co-writer, Lee Brice, pulled the picnic table down into the creek so we could soak our feet in the cool shallows and write songs to our hearts' content. We celebrated another number-one song for Lee with the most spectacular dinner I have ever had in my life. In the wine cellar of Blackberry Farm, a delightful tempo of courses was served with a pairing of world-class wine and farm-to-table food that was a mastered symphony of cuisine for the palate. My life’s work has been to inspire positive vision through music in as many countries and cultural atmospheres as the spirit has allowed. I have eaten my way through meals that have imprinted the universal language of music and the melodies of flavors, traditions, and tastes that only come through heritage food. Blackberry Farm is Tennessee’s flavor love language. It is the food version of the Grand Ole Opry, served with an intelligence that only farmers and food growers can afford. One cannot help but fall in love with the slow, soft, gentle tuning fork that is the natural pace of meandering your way around the Farm through the pastures for a barn visit or a horseback ride, or a waterfall-chasing hike to the top of the hills for a breathtaking Tennessee vantage point. Stop in for a treatment at the Wellhouse for a signature facial or a duo scalp and foot massage. Balance your soul with an Appalachian body purification treatment and learn ancient Cherokee secrets for unlocking Galvlati, or ‘heaven’ with a four-handed relaxation massage. Eco-Fin healing heat therapy, CBD treatments, Theragun percussive therapy, and Hydrafacils are offered, as well as feet and nail care, and any hair experiences you may be seeking. “True harmony of body and soul can only be achieved when we embrace a whole-life approach to wellness, an approach that balances rest, activity, pleasure and nourishment.” The Farm offers strength and fitness classes, cardio, barre, stretch, and release, as well as outdoor fitness stations for timed interval training. Dance instruction, aqua fit, pilates, meditation, and mindfulness with an array of yoga offerings are available, or if you would rather… grab a pole and go fly fishing! Join a Farmstead guide in a comprehensive tour of the working areas of the vegetable gardens and heritage livestock pasture gaining an understanding of the production in the Dairy Barn and Larder, or visit the kennels where the famous Lagotto Romagnolo dogs are raised. At the end of the tour, enjoy a sampling of Farmstead cheeses, meats, preserves, and beer. I pray you are able to enjoy this slice of heaven that inspires our cultural Tennessee trademarks the way I did. Your life will be enriched, strengthened, and enhanced because of your visit!

Family Vision DR. KEVIN DAVIS CARRIES ON HIS FAMILY’S COMPASSIONATE VISION CARE.
Dr. Kevin Davis MJFV IS TRULY A FAMILY BUSINESS. GIVE US A LITTLE INSIGHT INTO WHAT IT'S BEEN LIKE WORKING SO CLOSELY WITH BOTH YOUR FATHER AND UNCLE.
It has been a really cool experience since I joined in 2016. Not many can say they have a successful family business and successful transition down the family line to keep the business moving forward into the future. They are truly great men who care about every individual more than themselves. They care deeply about every patient and everyone is treated like family. I have adopted the same mentality of trying to maintain a family atmosphere - take care of the individual in front of you as best as you can, and the business will follow. They maintain a lot of humility, but they have positively impacted so many lives in the area - I hope to do the same. MJ is home for all of us, and we care deeply about the community.
DR PETE RETIRED VERY RECENTLY; HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED BOTH IN THE OFFICE AND SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU BECAUSE OF THIS?
My Father (Dr. Mike) and Uncle (Dr. Pete) still fill in at times and have a few select days when they are in the office. The practice is continuing to grow. We are working on a transition with adding a new Doctor in the near future - looking to find the right fit for the practice to help MJFV continue on into the future and meet the needs of the community. My Father and Uncle have such a positive legacy that is important to carry on.

ASIDE FROM YOUR DAD AND UNCLE, WHAT/WHO ALSO INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN EYE DOCTOR?
They definitely both had a large influence on who and where I am today. The work-life balance that they were able to maintain while growing up all while having a tremendous impact on the lives of so many people and the community is what really led me down this path. Vision is such an important sense that we sometimes take for granted. Maintaining good eye health and a properly functioning visual system is so important. We see and correlate many conditions just by looking at the eyes and visual pathway such as autoimmune issues, neurological conditions, and vascular conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, among many others. It is also important for us to ensure the Visual system is functioning appropriately at an early age - especially with all the technology we have in front of us in school, work, etc from such a young age we want to be able to track and address any issues early on.
I UNDERSTAND YOUR WIFE IS A NURSE AND YOU SHARE TWO BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN! WHAT DOES YOUR FAMILY LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
Yes, my wife is a Nurse Manager on a Cardiac Floor at Centennial Hospital. We have 2 wild yet amazing kids, Eli (5) and Emma (20 months). We like to travel when we can and share more experiences with our kids as they get older, hanging out with friends and when we are not working, we honestly just love hanging out at home most of the time - we are blessed with great families.

HOME STREET HOME 28
H OM E TOWN H E R O | L I FE + CU LT U RE
Mother Teresa is credited with saying, "let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness." Steven Young, founder of Home Street Home Ministries, is the embodiment of this sentiment - though he prefers to
something even more valuable. His time. He kept coming back, even when I wasn't responding very much to his efforts. It took almost 2 years, but in the end, his investment in me paid off." Dotson's investment more than paid off - as Young has taken it upon himself
come to you. The people he seeks to leave better and happier are, as he puts it, 'our homeless friends.' And his mission of outreach is deeply personal, as he found himself homeless at the age of 52. He recalls of the experience, "When fortunate enough and blessed enough to get off the streets, I couldn't forget what I saw, but more importantly, what I learned." One of the things he learned was, "nobody gets off the streets on their own. You must have help." For Young, that help came from a man named Mike Dotson. Dotson approached him and was patient, but persistent - even though Young was not initially receptive. "He didn't spend a lot of money or give me a lot of money. He gave me
to transform the lives of countless others who are experiencing homelessness. And having experienced it firsthand, Young intuitively knows what is needed for homeless individuals to triumph over their circumstances. Firstly, he knows spiritual and emotional support do a lot of the heavy lifting. "We operate under the belief that handshakes and hugs are just as important as tents and sleeping bags." HSH provides both in spades. When asked what the parameters are for what HSH provides, one deduces that it would be easier to ask what they don't provide. They help fill prescriptions, facilitate rehabilitation services, provide transportation, help with obtaining identification, assist with housing and utility costs once individuals leave

the streets, and more - much more. As Young articulates, "We possess a strong desire to minister to their non-physical needs by providing spiritual and emotional support as well. Prayer is a constant in what we do." The other thing Young is acutely aware of is that the homeless need help getting off the street - and they need the help to come to them. "We are a 'boots on the ground' operation," he explains. "Our offices are our vehicles, and we can be found in the field day and night. Always going to them. Never expecting them to come to us." This proactive approach is not only novel, it's game changing. HSH has successfully gotten over 600 people off the streets and Young has done that with an all-volunteer organization and no government involvement. For Young, the experience of homelessness was what he describes as, "a transcending moment," which reconnected him with God and facilitated, "a long overdue healing process." One might say it has turned him into the proverbial fisher of men - men whose lives he has transformed, leaving them better and happier - the living expression of God's kindness.

FAM ILY CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
Effective communication through speech and language plays a crucial role as we learn to find our footing within our families, communities, and society as a whole. The urge to communicate is something we are all born with and continue to build upon as we grow. However, there are a multitude of reasons why speech communication can be disrupted, especially during key developmental stages. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association at asha.org, nearly 1 in 12 U.S. children ages 3-17 has had a disorder related to voice, speech, language, or swallowing. Understandably, issues related to speech or feeding can create a stumbling block in a person’s ability to achieve fundamental milestones where the goal is to improve their quality of life. Luckily, there are people who specialize in providing advanced treatment for those who are seeking care to address issues pertaining to their speech-language and feeding obstacles. Speech Language Pathologists are the experts in helping to improve the lives of millions by providing them with the care and the tools they need to experience effective communication, essentially changing the course of their lives altogether. Mount Juliet is home to one of those experts, Kelcy Bonham M.S. CCC-SLP, CLC owner of Bloom Pediatric Therapy. Kelcy is a speech pathologist and lactation counselor who provides diligent care to each patient who enters her office. She states, “I love this community! ... Being able to work and serve in my community just means so much.” Kelcy gained her bachelor’s degree in communication disorders from Western Kentucky University before achieving her master’s degree in speech-language

This is not just a job for us. We are very passionate about what we do. pathology from East Tennessee State University. Earlier this year, Kelcy had the opportunity to pursue her dream of owning her own private practice and became the owner of Bloom Pediatric Therapy in Mount Juliet. She saw this opportunity as a way to reach further into the community and help more people. “There is an area of need right here in the community I live in, so I was eager to get started to help young children in such a critical time in their life” Bonham explains. Kelcy’s path to speech pathology started early on after having a friend in high school who experienced speech difficulties. Her curiosity only increased once she discovered the field of speech language pathology which lead to her specializing in feeding and lactation. She quickly understood that helping people succeed in the area of communication and feeding disorders was her life’s calling. Kelcy and the experts at Bloom specialize in early intervention and make it their mission to offer precise and long-lasting care to their patients with services that include breastfeeding support, feeding therapy, and speech and language therapy. Occupational Therapy has been an important addition to the many services that Bloom Pediatric Therapy offers the community, “Kiddos that need both occupational therapy and speech therapy a lot of times go hand in hand. So, being able to treat them as a whole

here in the clinic will be great! … Collaborating within house with other disciplines, [I’m] very excited about that!” Bonham describes. Additionally, she explains that stepping outside of Bloom and collaborating with other professionals so that children can receive whole care is something she is passionate about. “We just want to continue serving the community and providing high-quality services but also while advocating for our children, our clients that we see, and connecting them with other professionals if needed.” Kelcy stresses the importance of early intervention during those delicate developmental stages of life. “Early intervention is key. If a parent feels like something is off with their child’s feeding, speech, or motor development, [I encourage] them to go directly to their pediatrician or reach out to us or another therapy clinic to seek treatment earlier rather than later… this can help build strong foundational skills.” As Bloom Pediatric Therapy continues to grow its services and reach deeper into our community, we can be certain that Kelcy and her team of experts stand ready to advocate for the smallest among us as they deserve to have the opportunity to expand their speech and language communicative, sensory, motor capabilities as well as receive crucial lactation and feeding support. “This is not just a job for us. We are very passionate about what we do.”

DI S C OV E R J O R DA N Explore the Natural Beaut y and Culture of This Strikingly Beautiful Countr y
Situated in West Asia lies the magnificent country of Jordan. Filled with culture, history, and stunning landscapes, Jordan is stunningly beautiful and a true jewel of the Middle East. With its Mars-like appearance--which has often been used for filming locations for space movies— exploring the spectacular area of Wadi Rum in southern Jordan is the experience of a lifetime. The gradient warm hues of vivid red-orange sand and massive rock formations are something to behold. This desert area is best experienced by staying overnight at a Bedouin camp. Even if it’s just for a night or two, spending time out in this vast desert area
is a truly incredible experience. Driving out to the camp on a bench in the back of a pickup truck is a wild adventure in itself—especially for those who choose to include a stop to give sandboarding a try—as the landscape seems to stretch on forever. The windows in the simple tents of these Bedouin camps have million-dollar views, but are usually extremely affordable, costing less than $50 a night. The only thing more beautiful than the views is the welcoming hospitality of the people who operate them. As they invite visitors to experience their culture, staying in a Bedouin camp can include homemade meals of the most delicious local cuisine.

A traditional Zarb dinner of meat and vegetables is placed on a metal rack and cooked in a dug-out hole and enjoyed around a table with new friends from around the world. The surreal desert landscape is almost even more magical at night as stories are shared, and games are played as a form of after-dinner entertainment in the caves in the nearby rock formations. Music and dancing around a campfire are the purest form of connection regardless of language barriers as the warm glow of the firelight illuminates smiles and brings out laughter and everyone’s best selves under skies of stars. A trip to Jordan wouldn’t be complete without a stop in Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This ancient civilization carved into rock is so unbelievably well preserved and is incredible to witness. With many trails to hike to different areas such as the monastery, treasury, and tombs, multiple days can easily be spent taking in this archeological marvel. Driving to the Dead Sea is a juxtaposition from Wadi Rum and Petra, as the warm hues of the desert transition to the cool blue of the water. Being the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea is a stop that should be on any Jordan itinerary. With such a high salt content, floating in this water is almost a bizarre experience, since swimmers have to practically work to keep their feet on the ground because of how easy it is to float. With so much beauty, history, and culture, one could easily spend weeks enjoying this incredible country by adding time in the mountains and exploring all of the areas Jordan has to offer. But for those who only have a few days, this country can easily be added on to a trip to Egypt as it is a relatively short flight of just a few hours from Cairo to Amman. Covering Petra, the Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum can be done in a four-day trip, so be sure to add it to your bucket list and enjoy everything this beautiful country has to offer.
Photo One: If you stay overnight in a desert camp, don’t miss the amazing colors of the sunrise and sunset! The sunlight combined with the warm hues of the desert is simply enchanting!
Photo Two: A trip out to Wadi Rum wouldn’t be complete without giving sandboarding a try! While it may feel similar to snowboarding, trading in fresh white powder for smooth orange sand creates quite a different experience.
Photo Three: Jordan’s Wadi Rum has been used as a filming location for many movies set in outer space because of its Mars-like appearance.
Photo Four: The ancient civilization of Petra— one of the Seven Wonders of the World— is a must-see stop on any trip to Jordan.

Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day. Try this simple recipe, or create your own combination to give your health a boost.

Small Sustainable Habits Create Gentler Days
The alarm clock goes off and you hit snooze for the third time, or maybe that was the fourth. You roll over thinking of the twenty different things on your to-do list. I want to share a few things that can help turn hectic mornings into gentle ones. Here are four small habits I incorporate at night to make the mornings seem less like a chore and more like a day worth starting. Small, practical habits can pack a big punch!
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHASITY CLAGG
Train your brain to not skip the small things.
1. Create a sustainable nightly routine. One example might be starting the dishwasher and washing machine before bed each night. An empty sink and laundry room floor will quickly become a welcoming sight in the morning.
Small Habits To H e l p W i t h Busy Mornings Setting yourself up for a gentler morning eventually leads to calm evenings. And these changes in habit don’t have to be drastic in order to make a difference, they just need to be consistent. You’ve got this!
42
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | WE LLN E SS
2. Get others involved. Assigning a job to people in the home will not only give you less workload but also an important sense of responsibility to younger ones. 3. Ready, set, tidy! Discover the power of time blocking and set a timer to see how much can be done in 15 to 20 minutes (You might be surprised!) Take it up a notch by including littles and make it a game. 4. Prepare Yourself. Set up the morning at night! This could mean having the kids’ school clothes out, water bottles filled, or field trip forms signed and ready to go. It’s small things like this that allow for more mental rest in the mornings and a brighter day ahead.
