Embrace Your Style!

Dear Reader,

Today I want to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Cassidy Polman, Editorial Coordinator, and the newest member of the editorial team here at Mount Juliet City Lifestyle Magazine. As a resident of the Mt. Juliet area, I look forward to taking part in connecting with businesses and people all throughout our wonderful community to bring you the very best of what Mt. Juliet has to offer.

I am proud to say I was born and raised in Tennessee. I have lived in several places throughout our state stretching from Kingsport to Murfreesboro, to Mt. Juliet. I am an MTSU alumna, where I studied English, literature, and language arts. Writing is my passion, and I am delighted to be a part of this incredibly devoted team here at City Lifestyle. Working within this community, in this capacity is something I will cherish forever.

I hope you enjoy this month's Style Issue! We are sharing some amazing stories including an incredible story about strength, survival, and the drive to celebrate through it all. We also wanted to highlight local businesses that embrace style in different ways such as taking care of your skin, exploring new trends, and even styling your smile!

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Mount Juliet to uplift our spirits, boost our productivity and ignite our creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

Making Personal Cancer Care

SWIM SAFETY STARTS EARLY

Certified ISR Instructor, Amber Moore, Builds Swimmers All Year Long

According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4. They recommend pools be fully enclosed with a self-locking gate as a prevention measure. However, the number one way to help prevent fatalities is through water safety education and swimming skills.

When Amber Moore needed swim lessons for her son, she quickly realized there were limited options in Mount Juliet. At the time, she worked as an occupational therapist fostering safety and independence in her patients. This passion combined with the need for more skilled and certified swim instructors lead her to make a career change in early 2022. Growing up, she swam competitively and worked as a swim coach so becoming an ISR instructor was a natural fit.

KIDS CORNER | LOCAL SERVICES 18

Infant Swimming Resource is the leader in water Self-Rescue® skills for children ages six months to six years. Moore explains that working towards ISR certification is quite extensive and comprehensive. After a substantial interview, she was accepted into the program which consists of shadowing lessons, six weeks of in-water training, and 80 hours of coursework. She was also required to learn anatomy, medical conditions, and developmental milestones for children. In addition, Moore had to master 50 safety protocols, which is what makes ISR the safest swimming lessons available.

As an instructor, Moore works with each student 1-on-1 at a private, heated pool. Skill progression starts with kids learning to hold their breath, then putting their eyes in the water, followed by kicks, and arms. While crying is a common concern, Moore is constantly monitoring for breathing, body temperature, and fatigue.

One parent said “She is so patient and caring with my son. She seems very attuned to each student and their specific needs and pace, tailoring each lesson accordingly.”

Kiddo Swim offers lessons in Mount Juliet and Lebanon several times per year. Each session is 10 minutes a day, five days a week, for six weeks. Everything about ISR, including the schedule, is designed with the child’s development in mind. Lessons are short due to attention span and to prevent their bodies from becoming overtired. The frequency is structured so the child can immediately build on the progress made the day before. The schedule is a commitment, but parents can rest assured their child will be fully skilled at the end of six to eight weeks.

Summer swimmers are built in the winter. Sessions for new families will begin on October 16th and January 2nd. Learn more at kiddoswim.com.

STAND OUT STYLE

COUNTRY ARTIST

JD SHELBURNE SHARES ABOUT FASHION, MUSIC, AND STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD

For Country artist JD Shelburne, a college internship in Kentucky gave him his first look at the ins and outs of the music industry and he eventually made his way to Nashville to pursue his Country music dreams. Now residing with his wife Amy Jo and three-year-old son Jax in Mount Juliet, Shelburne is passionate about style, not only when it comes to his music, but also with the fashion he wears.  While he’s always been interested in putting his best foot forward with his style, it was when he received his first invite to the Kentucky Derby that he decided to take his fashion game to the next level. The event was in the early days of his career, and he dove into designing his outfit as a way to get noticed at the red-carpet gala.

Shelburne started dreaming up his own designs for a colorful, rhinestone-studded “Nudie” suit, like the kind that has been worn by Country artists throughout the history of the genre. “I had them custom designed for me and I wore one to the first Derby [I attended],” remembers Shelburne. “I literally got interviewed by David Letterman’s intern, I mean I was on every newspaper. And I did that every year and I still do it. It’s kind of become a tradition…” he says of the hand-sewn suits that have been featured in the Kentucky Derby Museum and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. For years he’s dreamed up his own designs and had specialty suits made for him and for the past two years, he’s had custom scarves made by the legendary Western wear designer and tailor Manuel Cuevas.   CONTINUED >

This year, Shelburne wore a white jacket that was inspired by an outfit he’d seen Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts wear and had a rose-embroidered scarf made to match his wife’s pink dress. “We ended up taking the pink dress to Manuel and Manuel made the exact same floral design her dress had on my scarf. It looked so hot, I loved it…It’s a great conversation piece as an artist, people always asking where we get it. I love style for Derby. Derby’s all about style,” he says of his outfits.

The Country artist is also known to wear his red alligator cowboy boots on red carpets and carry his style over to his instruments, including his red Takamine acoustic guitar embellished with a silver cross.

Shelburne has had an exciting year as he has already played close to 100 shows since January. With the recent release of his sixth album Neon Hallelujah on July 18, he’s loved sharing his new music on tour this summer. The 14-song album is his longest album to date and even includes his own rendition of the gospel song “Amazing Grace” with the renowned Country group The Oak Ridge Boys. “[With] this album, I feel like I’ve grown as an artist,” explains Shelburne. “I feel like I’m a better singer. I’ve just got a better style of songs on this record. I’m just really excited for my fans to hear it…”

Celebrate We Will!

A STORY OF STRENGTH AND SURVIVAL

Katt Cothron was just 17 when she first heard the word cancer. I had the privilege of finding out how, since then, her faith and determination have kept her focused on what truly matters.

YOU HAVE SUCH AN INCREDIBLE STORY OF PERSEVERANCE AND STRENGTH. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WITH CANCER AND HOW IT HELPED YOU HOLD TIGHT TO YOUR CONVICTIONS.

I often tell people my life BEGAN when it should have been ending. I learned at a young age that life can be short; it can be hard and painful. Hard days will come, but by the absolute grace of God, good days will come, too. My dad told me many years ago, at the start of my health journey, that in the hardest times to remember "if Jesus could endure the pain of dying on the cross for our sins" then I could endure this pain. That single phrase has brought me through 20 years of working to stay alive.

I was a perfectly healthy normal 17-year-old senior in high school when I first started getting sick. What started out as a simple "swollen lymph node" in my neck turned into a cancer diagnosis.

I had my first surgery to remove a softball size mass out of my neck in September of 2003 and over the last 20 years, I have had countless surgeries and other treatments all over my body. At this point in my life, I am battling the "aftermath" of cancer and treatments.

SOME OF YOUR HISTORY IN DECORATING IS IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON HOW YOUR INVOLVEMENT CAME TO BE AND IN WHAT CAPACITY?

I have worked in the wedding and event industry for nearly 20 years and still occasionally work weddings with a dear friend of mine, Emily Kennedy, who owns the Planning & Floral Design company Kennedy Occasions here in Middle TN. I started planning small church weddings with tiny budgets and worked up to working with some of the most talented planners & event vendors on million-dollar events! I have had the honor of meeting and working hand in hand with celebrity clients of all kinds, even a past Vice President! Nashville is such a unique mix of people and cultures, and the event industry is just booming. It's been an absolute privilege to be a part of it for so many years.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO LEAVE THE WEDDING INDUSTRY AND START CELEBRATE WE WILL! HOW DID YOU LAND ON SUCH A FUN NAME?

My husband and I spent quite a while trying to have children and we went through several devastating losses. The entire process of pregnancy and loss was extremely hard on my body. Once I was finally able to give birth to a healthy and perfect baby girl, my time became so much more precious, and events became harder... So, I slowly began working towards an idea that would still put my love of events (and celebrating) to good use. I liked the idea of still being able to help people design and curate beautiful event designs but not be involved in the set-up and working of the actual event. It all eventually led me to the selling of party decor products.

As far as our name...I hate cancer, however, it has helped shape me into the person I am today. It has taught me to try and celebrate life every day because even in the midst of all the bad, there is good. That is where the name Celebrate We Will

comes from- the song lyric "Celebrate we will because life is short but sweet for certain" -by the Dave Matthews Band.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE BUSINESS SIDE OF CELEBRATE WE WILL!

Celebrate We Will is an online party decor boutique with a permanent store "home" inside Sisters WhimZy in Mt. Juliet! The idea behind CWW is to bring the highest quality party decor, including artisan handmade pieces & one-of-a-kind finds, together in one place. I work to curate the best products and designs into "Themed Collections'' that I then sell on our website. This way people can buy one piece of the collection they love, or the whole thing! I want to make the party design process easy on our customers! We offer shipping all over the US and free in-store pick-up at Sisters WhimZy!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EVENT/ HOLIDAY TO DECORATE FOR?

Oh man, all of them, haha! But probably fall/Halloween and Christmas. I love a fun (not so spooky) Halloween party! I think our Halloween lines are always so fun and my family has so much fun decorating with them. I love the whole Christmas season. It's so special and people just become so happy and excited to decorate! Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas morning brunch- I love the excitement and how just some festive paper plates, a fun napkin, and a festive coffee cup can just make it so much fun (and easier to clean up-wink wink)!!

For suggestions and ideas for your event, you can contact Katt on any of her social media (@celebratewewilltn). You can also contact her on and shop her website at celebratewewilltn.com.

Permanent Jewelry, Indelible Impact

Local Brand Get Lit is Styling Nashville and Empowering Businesswomen in the Process FASHION FORWARD | BEAUTY
30
Tara Schatz Styled by Michelle Vejar of Rock-n-Boho

Jewelry, like most accessories, tends to be thought of as ephemeral. You put pieces on, take them off, switch some out, and wash, rinse, repeat. But you often find in the process of getting dressed and undressed day after day, there’s a piece or two that have a more perennial place in the rotation.

Perhaps it’s your wedding ring. Or a necklace with your child’s initials. Or a friendship bracelet. Or maybe just a piece that doesn’t signify or commemorate anything significant, but simply looks good on you and therefore, makes you feel good. These pieces are the iconography that expresses your identity and serve as your suit of armor as you navigate the world each day.

Now imagine if these treasured adornments were ‘permanent.’ This is the trend taking TikTok and the jewelry world by storm. Now for some, the word permanent will likely evoke a feeling of panic. But rest assured, while some level of commitment is involved, it is a painless (and very easily reversible) process. Permanent jewelry is simply the process of welding a bracelet, necklace, or anklet where there would otherwise be a clasp.

Mount Juliet’s Tara Schatz is the creative mind behind Get Lit, an original Nashville brand that specializes in permanent jewelry. “What started as a hobby of making stamped jewelry with words of affirmation for my friends/family turned into a small business. I added permanent jewelry a little over two years ago. I loved the concept of having a beautiful, reliable piece that you never had to worry about. And that’s exactly what permanent jewelry is. It’s always on, and you’re always ready to go. No extra thought necessary.”

It certainly makes life a whole lot easier for those who are prone to losing things. But you might still be thinking, despite the convenience factor, why people would opt to make jewelry permanent. Especially those of you who break out in hives at the thought of commitment.

While she commonly sees customers come to Get Lit for occasions like bachelorette parties or birthdays, Schatz shares that some of the most meaningful pieces have been made to commemorate the passing of a loved one. “One family, in particular, comes to mind. Due to a tragic accident, they lost a baby before it was born. All of the grieving mother’s family and friends got pieces to memorialize the infant. It was a touching, powerful moment to be invited into.” This story demonstrates that for some, permanent jewelry isn’t just about the end product – the process can be meaningful too. It can be a bonding experience, whether it be for the purpose of celebration or catharsis.

Schatz understands this and provides several different avenues for her customers to create memories by way of permanent jewelry. Get Lit offers private parties, where they will go to the host’s home (or venue of choice). They also have pop-ups in boutiques across middle Tennessee. And lastly, they have 20 locations nationwide and are constantly expanding – in fact, Schatz shares that a new location is coming to Lebanon Square (next to the Capitol Theater) on September 16th. “This store, The Lit Brand, will incorporate our roots of hand-stamped jewelry, permanent jewelry, as well as a few new experiences for the men-custom knife and gun engravings!

“I loved the concept of having a beautiful, reliable piece that you never had to worry about. And that’s exactly what permanent jewelry is. It’s always on, and you’re always ready to go.”

Oh, and you don’t want to miss our custom hat and vintage jacket bar!”

While a lot can be said about permanent jewelry, and how it’s an exciting and novel trend, it’s not even the most extraordinary thing about Get Lit. Schatz has been a single mom up until this past November. And in her own words, “Being a single mom for nearly 7 years has given me so much strength and so much drive.” That drive has inspired her to turn her passion into not just a business (which would be impressive enough), but an enterprise

that empowers other women to own their own stake in the brand. “When women come to me and want to own a branch of Get Lit, most of them have similar stories to mine. The one thing that we take pride in is making sure that our brand partners are taken care of. Regardless of the situation, they are our family!”

Some things are ephemeral. Styles, trends, and perhaps even jewelry. But building a business that lifts other women up the way Schatz has, has had an effect on our community, which can only be described as indelible.

Taking Care of Your Skin is the Ultimate Style

When they say skin is your best accessory, it seems like an understatement. Yes, accessories can be iconic (Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ affinity for oversized sunglasses comes to mind). But your skin is quite unlike an accessory in that you can’t switch it out - it’s what you wear every single day of your life.

It makes sense then, for something that you wear every day, to treat it with the utmost care. It also makes sense why you’d be discerning and careful with who you entrust to take care of it.

Glow Wilco, Mt. Juliet’s local aesthetics practice, is here to take care of your skin and put your mind at ease. Shauna Bowers and Katie De Araujo Jorge are the women behind the practice, who brought their collective expertise and experience from the medical field into the world of beauty. Bowers obtained her degree in nursing as a family nurse practitioner, while De Araujo Jorge worked in anesthesia and pain management as a CRNA.

The two met playing tennis and, as Bowers recounts, instantly hit it off. “The more we learned about each other, we realized we had the same passion and goals for medical aesthetics in Wilson County. It was very synergistic from the beginning and everything continued to

fall into place.” They quickly joined forces and brought on John Rosdeutscher as the medical director.

That synergy culminated in what they describe as, “an innovative blend of science and art: a place that exists to enhance the beauty of those around us by providing the highest quality.” Notice the word ‘enhance.’ Unlike many other aesthetic practitioners, Glow Wilco is not here to create the same features as an assembly line would. Instead, they are big believers in natural and achievable beauty. Perhaps this is where their background in medicine informs not only their abilities but their perspective as well. Bowers and De Araujo Jorge operate from a more science-oriented and realistic approach.

Bowers explains, “We value differences in facial features and do not want to create the same lips, cheeks, and jawlines for all our clients. We want to see expression on your face and allow your face to tell the story

of your life. We want to enhance your natural beauty and soften the signs of aging. We strive to avoid creating unnatural, unrealistic, unbalanced features because we believe that less is more.” This is an admirable goal, given the growing sea of a certain Kardashian-likeness. While their goal is to help clients achieve beauty in the terms that they desire, they aren’t here to provide a cookie-cutter approach that renders their customers devoid of individuality – or age.

At Glow Wilco, you’ll find a provider that will act as consultants, confidants, and friends. “Our goal has always been to meet people where they are in the aging process and provide options to restore youthfulness in a balanced and beautiful way,” Bowers says. To that end, Glow Wilco provides a range of aesthetic services, including Botox, fillers, lasers, micro-needling, hydro facials, and more.

And their expertise and skills extend far beyond the four walls of their practice. Bowers and De Arujo Jorge have developed their own product line, called Skin Apothecary, which we will be seeing more of in the months to come. The ladies at Glow Wilco are constantly looking for opportunities to grow and evolve, which includes expanding their service menu as well.

And with their expertise come not just stellar products and services, but also great advice for home maintenance. Bowers recommends washing your face when you get home for the day, committing to a skincare routine that is simple and involves few steps (so that it’s manageable), and investing in a Gua Sha tool for facial massage, a silk pillowcase to protect the delicate skin on your face, and towel wristbands to prevent water dripping down your arms while you wash your face (it’s the little things). With this wisdom and the offerings available at Glow Wilco, you can make your skin your iconic accessory.

Towering Figures

Local Business, Buddy Allen Carpet One, Hosts 7th Annual Golf Tournament to Raise Money for the Tunnels to Towers Foundation

On September 11, 2001, firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller entered the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he tragically lost his life. His motivation to help that day had not been deterred by the fact that he had just finished his shift. Nor was he deterred when he couldn’t enter the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel by truck. So determined was he to do good, that he proceeded on foot, after hours, and ran towards the fire. To ‘do good’ was a guiding principle in Siller’s life, and it was one that would come to define his legacy.

Tunnels to Towers Foundation was born out of the extraordinary sacrifice Siller made on that fateful day. And the ethos he lived by has been enshrined in the T2T Foundation, which has raised over $500 million dollars in support of our nation’s greatest heroes and their families.

The T2T Foundation has various programs that benefit the military and first responders, one of which is the Smart Home Program. Via the smart home program, T2T builds mortgage-free houses for catastrophically wounded veterans and first responders, customizing the design of the house to meet the specific needs of the injured individual.

Our local Buddy Allen Carpet One (BACO) is a proud partner of the T2T Foundation – when a smart home is built in the Nashville area, BACO donates and installs the flooring. In addition to donating goods and services, BACO also holds an annual golf tournament to raise money for T2T.

This past May 10th – 11th, BACO held their annual ‘Tee Off’ party and golf tournament. The Tee Off party was a spirited evening of dinner, drinks, entertainment, and a live and silent auction. Local businesses

contributed over 70 auction items –including a cowboy hat autographed by George Strait, We the People guitars, NASCAR race packages, and customized Jack Daniel's barrels with an engraved Stephen Siller logo.

The next day, BACO hosted their 7th annual golf tournament at the Pine Creek golf course. The tournament consisted of approximately 240 golfers organized into small teams – there was a morning flight and an afternoon flight, and each flight played 18 holes. Many of the participants were first responders (members of the Brentwood police and Lebanon fire) and retired veterans. The BACO tournament also proudly hosted USMC Lance Corporal Eli Tice, an injured veteran who will be receiving a smarthome in the middle Tennessee area.

The event was a smashing success, as BACO raised $53,000. In total, BACO has raised $250,000 for T2T over the past seven years. “Although this fantastic organization is based out of New York City,” Jenna Allen of BACO explains, “they are like family. I’m excited to be part of a community that continues to bring awareness.”  Through flooring donations and their annual golf tournament, our local BACO is doing good for the community, and embodying the spirit of the T2T Foundation and the man himself – the towering figure of firefighter Stephen Siller.

The Accessory That Says Everything

Digital Technology and Modern Dentistry are Making Beautiful Smiles More Accessible Than Ever

When it comes to accessories, you can spend a small fortune on jewelry and gems or clutches and shoes.

But the most important accessory you have accompanies you everywhere you go, and it’s not affected by season, color or occasion. It’s relatively inexpensive to maintain and, in a very real way, it says everything about you.

Of course, we’re talking about your smile.

“Seeing someone with a big and cheerful smile provides a glimpse into their personality,” says Dr. Zac Berry, owner of Berry Dental Group in Mount Juliet. “You can tell if it’s someone who is fun to be around. It’s more than just straight teeth; it’s the smile.”

While Berry Dental Group provides general dentistry and oral hygiene care, these days Dr. Berry is treating more adults seeking cosmetic treatment – the average Invisalign patient is about 40 years old – traditionally associated with children. He says the uptick is due to adults reaching a point

in their lives where they have more time to take care of themselves.

“It’s not unusual to have a patient who had braces as a child but whose teeth continued to shift over time and now, in her 40s, she wants that beautiful smile again,” he says. “It’s not that it’s unhealthy or holding her back; she just wants to get back to feeling whole again.”

With digital technology, oral impressions have become obsolete and, with a quick scan of their teeth, patients can see how their new smile will look in about five minutes.

Dr. Berry says that it’s amazing to see a patient’s confidence restored through cosmetic dentistry. One in particular, a woman in her 30s, would cover her mouth when she spoke because her teeth weren’t straight. “But after her treatment, her husband came in and said, ‘You have no idea how much happier she is.’”
