We bring the beach to your backyard.
My mantra in life has always been, "Life is an adventure." I love to fully live in moments that make me feel alive and I try to share this mindset with my family every opportunity I have because as we all know, life is fleeting. Taking time to explore and seek the adventurous nature that life has to offer are memories made coated in gold.
We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.
I'll never forget our first LONG road trip as a family when we still lived in California. My husband is in the music industry so we took the opportunity to visit a new place every day that he had an event at which led us all the way to the Grand Canyon and back. We spent less than 24 hours in 7 different places (Palm Springs, Yuma, Grand Canyon, Sedona, San Diego, Disneyland and Santa Barbara) and over 40 hours in the car. I hold those memories and those photos so close to my heart. We got lost a few times, we used the Kayak Ap to book all of our rooms day of. We shared so many laughs, it was pure therapy for our souls.
Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.
If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! ;) Happy April!

The city of Lebanon, TN, was full of excitement back on December 9, 1941. Everyone was a buzz with anticipation for the grand opening of the Capitol Theatre. Citizens were eager to get to the movies to see Betty Grable in Technicolor! In the early years, the theater seated 1000 and was expertly crafted as one of the best buildings in town.
After being open for almost 40 years, this beloved theater closed in 1980 and sat dormant for nearly three decades until 2009, when it was purchased as a passion project by Bob and Pam Black. It remains one of the few privately-owned historic theaters in the US. Raised in a military family, Bob Black moved around frequently in his childhood. When arriving in a new town, the first thing they would do is seek out the local theater.
The purchase and renovation of the Capitol Theatre took four years. As you might imagine, after 30 years of vacancy, it was in quite a state, including holes in the roof that contributed to significant interior damage. Black wanted to keep the Art Deco atmosphere of the venue, so they salvaged and restored as much as possible. From the outside, the marquee proudly displays the original letters. Walk inside, and you’ll notice the original terrazzo floors, poster boxes, restroom signs, and light fixtures. The paint colors were also matched from the remaining chips of paint on the walls. It’s like stepping back in time!
With a complete audio-visual upgrade, Capitol Theatre now operates as a unique multi-purpose building. Common functions include conferences, craft fairs, and even proms. During the renovation, they discovered a beautifully-bricked
attic which is used for more intimate gatherings such as baby showers, birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, and business meetings.
This one-of-a-kind space has hosted some eccentric celebrations and national events since reopening in 2013. The Macabre Faire moved its 4-day indie film festival from Long Island, New York, to Lebanon, Tennessee, in 2021 and will return this Fall. Over 100 movies are featured during the weekend, including live music every evening with specialty drinks and food items served from the concessions area.
Audience of One Productions also calls the Capitol Theatre home. With a vision of having Broadway-quality theater available in Wilson County, director Angie Dee frequently sees sold-out shows on this remarkable stage. The 2023 season includes The Music Man Jr. and Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
Since its revitalization, this nostalgic theater has received several accolades. Not only is it a Main Street Award Winner for Best Event and Family Fun Entertainment Venue, but it’s also where Dylan Scott recorded his music video, which later won him Best New Artist of the Year. Those in the music industry specifically know this auditorium as one of the best for sound quality and acoustics. Additionally, several commercials, TV shows, and movies have been filmed here, including an episode of Chrisley Knows Best.
Brides love the location for its history, charm, and fun way to wow guests. The Art Deco backdrop is a perfect setting for gorgeous photos. Plus, the experience of seeing their name in lights on the iconic marquee is icing on the cake. It turns out that anyone can rent the marquee to display a special message, including birthdays, anniversaries, and – you guessed it - proposals!
If you want to experience the historic charm for yourself, the Capitol Theatre hosts retro movies for only $5 throughout the year. Some popular shows sell out quickly, including Grease Sing-ALong, Hocus Pocus, Polar Express, and the themed trivia nights followed by a classic movie. The full schedule is available at capitoltheatretn.com.

When your plans call for leisure travel, plan your budget accordingly.
You deserve a vacation! And the best vacation is one you can afford. Before packing your bags for your next journey, make sure the numbers add up in your favor. Sill uncertain? Financial advisor Greg Long of Edward Jones has some helpful hints.
“In my opinion, budgeting is a premium, but what’s considered ‘normal’ is different for everyone. If it’s a short timeframe, hold your money in cash, like a money market account or a CD. If you’re planning something big that’s several years, you can look at some investment options that are consistent with your proclivity for risk.”
“You can put the expenses on your credit card if you so choose but pay it off immediately. Heavens, no, I do not believe in taking on
debt to pay for a vacation. That goes for your HELOC as well. I want my clients to consistently have compounded interest working for them, not against them.”
“You’ve worked hard to accumulate your wealth, but at some point, you have to ask, ‘what’s the money there for?’ Vacations are among the best ways to create lasting memories. So, stay within your budget. Don’t go into debt. But if you have the means, my best advice is to book the trip.
Greg Long has been an Edward Jones Financial Advisor since 2010. He and his wife, Stacey, live in Mt. Juliet with their three daughters. His office is located at 2512 North Mount Juliet Road.

Middle Tennessee Electric is helping members determine if going off the grid is a viable option.
ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANNY MARK PHOTOGRAPHY
You’ve been hearing about solar energy for years, and the idea of going off-grid, eliminating the cost of electricity, and reducing your carbon footprint has a certain appeal. But have you really explored your options?
Do you know who sells and installs solar panels? Are they reputable? How many do you need? Are you going entirely off-grid or just partially? And above all, how much is it going to cost?
You probably did not know that Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE) has a specialist on staff who can answer your questions.
Tim Suddoth has served as MTE’s Energy Services Manager (officially: Distributed Energy Resources/ Energy Services Supervisor) since 2017. Suddoth and his energy services team are responsible for home energy evaluations that can help MTE members make their homes more energy efficient.
“We look at anything that consumes energy, such as lighting, heat pumps and major appliances, and we look for air leakage through windows and doors,” says Suddoth. “We also inspect attic insulation and duct work as those are typically unseen but have a great influence on your energy costs.”
Suddoth is also an accredited solar energy expert by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). Since licenses are not issued for solar installations (a licensed electrician has to make the connection to the electric grid), NABCEP certification is considered the gold standard for those in the solar energy industry.
While an inspection of your current systems and situation isn’t directly related to solar energy, Suddoth says it is a logical first step. Because as enticing as going off the grid may be, it’s not for everyone at this point.
“Going off the grid is an extreme measure,” he says. “It’s important to understand the concept of power and how much it takes to run the home so
that you can enjoy creature comforts like air conditioning, heat and hot water. People who decide to go off-grid tend to be a bit more prepared to compromise on some of those lifestyle features.”
That’s why an assessment of your current situation is so important.
“Let’s say your utility bill averages $ 200 a month, but we can identify improvements that can reduce that cost to $125,” says Suddoth. “Now, you’re in a position where your solar energy requirements are a lot less, but you’re still saving a lot of money and conserving energy even if you decide that solar is not for you.”
Suddoth says numerous factors will determine whether your house is a good candidate for going off the grid. Chief among those is the fact that, on average, Middle Tennessee experiences only five hours of sunlight per day, and, in some cases, obstructions such as hills or trees could interfere with your solar panels’ ability to generate power.
“On an overcast day, solar just doesn’t produce much energy,” says Suddoth. “What happens if your battery is running out of juice and there’s no sunlight available to recharge it? Then there are costs associated with the physical square footage of the roof or ground space. Those are huge drivers in terms of answering important questions that every customer is going to ask.
“It can be done, but you have to consider the financial commitment and be ready mentally because you can’t go off the grid and forget about it. You have to manage your daily activities, keep your eyes on the weather and your battery status. Essentially, you’re becoming a powerplant manager.”
That said, systems are becoming better, and, according to Suddoth, it’s possible that going off the grid could become commonplace in many of our lifetimes.
“Going off the grid is an extreme measure. It’s important to understand the concept of power and how much it takes to run the home so that you can enjoy creature comforts like air conditioning, heat and hot water.”
Until then, a hybrid system might be a good option for those who want to venture into solar energy.
“You can design your system so we’re the backup,” says Suddoth. “First, you’ll have your solar panels and batteries, and what they can’t produce, MTE will provide.”
You must choose to do business with a reputable, experienced solar installer if you select this option, says Suddoth. It’s also worth noting that MTE is a consultant, not a service
contractor or equipment provider. The names of those providers are available through MTE’s Quality Contractor Network.
“MTE is here to help our members. My role is to provide members with an unbiased opinion and get them to think about things in the long term because, even if you go solar, you’re still going to have maintenance and replacement expenses,” says Suddoth. “All of this should be considered before making your decision.”
ABOUT MTE: Founded in 1936, MTE is the largest electric cooperative in the Tennessee Valley Authority region and the second largest in the United States, serving more than 750,000 Tennesseans via 325,000+ accounts in 11 Middle Tennessee counties, including Rutherford and Wilson, and the municipalities of Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne, Lebanon, and Mt. Juliet. MTE employs 520 people in seven local offices and its Murfreesboro corporate headquarters.
“My role is to provide members with an unbiased opinion and get them to think about things long-term because, even if you go solar, you’re still going to have maintenance and replacement expenses.”
4 Incredible places to (literally) sleep under the stars
It’s always magical to spend a night sleeping under the stars. In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience.
For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique
opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors.
Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.
In southern Utah, Amangiri is a five star resort perfect for an adventurous weekend in the desert. However, it is the simple rooms built to emphasize the beauty of Canyon Point that truly make it an incredible place to stay. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace with private pools or rooftop terraces available too. Don’t miss a dip in the ‘gram-worthy pool, which wraps around the landscape’s curved dunes and arid plateaus. CONTINUED >
The Spanish island Ibiza boasts lush pine forests, hidden calas (cove beaches) and Hacienda Na Xamena, a resort suspended on a cliff 600 feet above the Mediterranean. Guests flock to its spa for the eight saltwater thalassotherapy (seawater as a form of therapy) lagoons, which are linked together with waterfalls. Swim to the edge of the pool and drink in the sweeping sea vistas.
This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns.
